2014 Annual Report
A note of thanks from Board President Ken Wilmes
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as
Board President of Saddle Up for the past
three years!
It has truly been a blessing
to be part of such a great
organization and the
experience has enriched
my life. Everything is
working at Saddle Up!. We
have a committed staff, a
strong network of seasoned
volunteers, generous support
from the community, and an
engaged Board.
Our mission creates the guardrails for every
decision: Saddle Up!’s mission is to provide
children and youth with disabilities the
opportunity to grow and develop through
therapeutic, educational and recreational
activities with horses.
Words can’t explain the connection between
a rider and a horse, and it only takes one
visit during programs to experience this
bond. The pinnacle of every year for me is
the SUPER Show I always walk away
thinking I should do more. Everyone
gives in their own way to make
this organization what it is and
I want to give a personal thank
you to the parents for sharing
their children, to the volunteers
that could easily find other
things to do with their time, for
the individuals and companies that
gift through pledges and sponsorships,
to the staff that is always finding ways to
expand services and control expenses, and
to the Board for keeping the mission as the
driving force in all decisions. Once you
encounter Saddle Up!, you can never walk
away! See ya around!
Ken Wilmes, 2012-2014 Board President

Dear Saddle Up! Friends,
Growth was the key word at Saddle Up!
in 2014.
From the number of children served to
the service hours given by our amazing
volunteers, Saddle Up! grew in a measured
way – following our strategic plan – to
support our mission.
Following are 2014 highlights for each
strategic plan goal:

Capacity:
• The red barn was put to work for programs
and storage to increase utilization of our
current facilities.
• We also put a new roof on the red barn, and
sealed the driveway/parking lot that we’d
redone in 2013 and re-striped the parking lot.
People:
• This goal focuses on getting and continually
developing people engaged in delivering our
mission. This is an ongoing process with both
informal and formal work. This list highlights
the formal portion.
• American Hippotherapy Association – We
hosted our first AHA Level 1 workshop for
therapists from several states; Saddle Up! is
the only member AHA center in Tennessee
• PATH Intl. – We again hosted the workshop
and certification sessions for PATH Intl.
Registered level Instructors candidates.
• Our ongoing education and training
workshops continued to grow in numbers
and types of learning offered, including the
horse series with our partner MTSU
Horse Science program and an American Sign
Language course that had to be offered twice
to meet the demand.
• We said goodbye to long-time Program
Director Lindsey Wood as she began a new
job with Williamson County Parks and
Recreation, and congratulated therapist
Kelley Newman for her election to the Board
and as Secretary of the American
als
Hippotherapy Association.
sing Events
• Awards – PATH Intl. named Dr. Nathaniel
ms' Fees
Wright, Instructor Martha Georgeson and
ops, Educ., Products
equine Gretel as Region 5 winners in the
neous
Financial:
• Saddle Up! remained financially solid, with
year-end revenues exceeding our expenses.
• Our major fundraising events – the Music
Country Grand Prix and Chukkers for
Charity – had great years, with the MCGP
again having a record fundraising year and
Chukkers at near record level.
• Our support from the community included
Oakview School’s race benefiting
Saddle Up! with a $10,000+ donation plus
“The Three Ladies of favor’s” Kentucky
Derby Party and Levy’s benefits for
Saddle Up!.
• Each donor helped make it possible for us to
serve more children.
• With your generous support and
management’s financial stewardship, we
again did not raise program fees.
• 76 cents of each dollar went to support
programs.
Marketing/Public Relations:
• A task force completed a marketing audit and
plan to help us make more people aware of
Saddle Up! and engage in our mission.
• Our outreach resulted in a record number of
news stories in print, online, radio/TV and
social media plus speaking engagements and
participation in community events.
• We produced a new video, “Hello from
Hershey,” at the end of the year to show
Saddle Up! at work.
It was definitely a growing year, and all growth was targeted to help Saddle Up! be able to serve
more our of special equestrians in more ways. But this couldn’t have happened without the
support of people, like you, who help keep Saddle Up! as the place, “Where all children are equal
in the saddle.”
