Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy
A high-energy, acoustic brass 'n' grass outfit based

Hillstomp... Dear Southeast Alaska:
Well, it's official, Hillstomp is back in the

for a raucous hill country blues stomp that comes
clanging and tumbling out of an assortment
of vintage mics, buckets, cans and BBQ lids
drenched in rambunctious slide guitar.

RULES & REGULATIONS
1. Entries are open to all.
2. Exhibitor must be the bonafide maker or grower of the article, or, in the case of livestock, the owner for 90
days prior to the fair. Items that are not the work of the exhibitor may be entered for display only.
3. With the exception of live animals or plants, no entry shall have been previously entered in the Southeast
State Fair for judging. Exhibits should have been completed within the past year unless otherwise specified.
4. No exhibit will be allowed to compete for more than one premium. Only one entry per Lot except as otherwise specified.
5. If items are for sale, this information, along with the price, should be on a special tag available from the
Fair. The Fair will charge a 15 percent commission.
6. When three or more exhibits of the same type are entered in “Other,” the Superintendent may establish a
separate Class for judging and awarding. If a Lot already exists for a category, “Other” may not be used.
7. Every possible precaution to protect the exhibits and property while they are being exhibited will be taken,
but it is understood that the Corporation shall in no way be held responsible for loss, damage or injury of
any kind from any source whatsoever. No person is allowed to cross the exhibit barriers.
8. NO EXHIBIT MAY BE REMOVED FROM THE FAIRGROUNDS BEFORE CLOSING ON SUNDAY,
JULY 29. Permission is required from fair office before removing exhibits. Exhibits will not be released
except to owners with proper I.D. or written permission from owner (with verification). All exhibits should
be removed from the Fair no later than 4 p.m. Tues., July 31. The Southeast Alaska State Fair, Inc. will
not be responsible for exhibits left at the Fairgrounds after this time.
9. Any additional rules pertaining to a specific Department will be defined within that Department description.

Fair. It will be the owner’s responsibility to clean up after their animal.
12. Should exceedingly adverse weather conditions occur that would make carrying out the regular program
for that day impractical, such program or event may be postponed or omitted.
13. The Board of Directors reserves the final right to interpret these rules and regulations and to settle all
questions connected with or incident to the Fair which are not covered herein.
14. No alcoholic beverages shall be brought into the Fairgrounds. Alcohol sold at the Fair may be consumed

ENTRY PROCEDURE
1. Entries may be made either in person or through coordination with the Town Representative in each town.
2. Mailed entries should be marked clearly on the outside of the package “Fair Exhibit” with the name of the exhibitor, address, Department, Class and Lot in which the exhibit is to be entered written on the outside of the
package and also firmly attached to each exhibit. Mailed entries should be sent in care of the Southeast Alaska
State Fair, P.O. Box 385, Haines, Alaska 99827, must be sent prepaid, and must be received by July 20, 2012.
3. Each exhibitor will be assigned an ID number based on the location where they enter an exhibit. This ID number
should be used on all entries. There is a place on each exhibit tag for your ID number. Your assigned ID number
will identify the exhibitor as well as each exhibit. Permanent Fair numbers will not be used this year.
4. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to fill out an exhibit tag for each item they enter. Please be sure to include
your correct mailing address. Exhibits which have been erroneously entered in a Class, may at the discretion of
the Department Superintendent, be transferred to the proper Class before judging.
5. Exhibit ID numbers and tags are available from your town representative or the Fair Office.
6. The pink copy of the exhibit tag is the exhibitor’s claim check. Please bring your pink copy to claim your exhibit
after the Fair.
6
DIVISIONS
Within each department there are divisions based on age or level of expertise. The exhibitor must choose the
applicable division.
1. Junior Division: For exhibitors age 16 and under. If you circle this division you must also state your grade
at the time the exhibit was grown/made. Grade level will be taken into consideration in the judging for this
division. If you fail to fill in your grade, you will automatically be placed in the highest age group. Junior-division categories include: Preschool through 2nd grade; 3rd through 6th grade; 7th through 9th grade; 10th
through 12th grade.
2. Senior Division: For exhibitors 17 years of age and up.
3. Professional: For exhibitors who have taught for a fee, or have sold more than $500 in merchandise in the
exhibit department category entered in one calendar year.
4. Group: For exhibits created by 2 or more people.
RIBBONS
Ribbons will be awarded as follows:
Department Grand Champion - Large Purple Rosette
Junior Division Champion - Large Blue Rosette
Senior Division Champion - Large Blue Rosette
Professional Division Champion - Large Blue Rosette
Group Division Champion - Large Blue Rosette
Best of Class - Blue Rosette
First Place - Blue Ribbon
Second Place - Red Ribbon
Third Place - White Ribbon
Each Lot within an Exhibit Department is judged and places awarded. A "Best of Class" winner is chosen from
among blue ribbons winners awarded in a Class. Up to three Division Champions per Department--a Senior,
Junior and Professional--are selected from the Best of Class winners. In applicable Departments, a Group
Division Champion may be awarded. A Department Champion is chosen from among the Division winners as
the best entry in that Department.
YOUTH PREMIUMS
Premium payments are made only in the Junior Division. Prizes are awarded in sponsored departments.
Youth departments judged using the Danish System of evaluating the merit of each exhibit according to
the stadards set for the Department:
First Place - $3.00
Second Place - $2.00
Third Place - $1.00
Judging results are recorded on each exhibit tag. A complete spreadsheet of 2013
exhibit results will be posted online in August at www.seakfair.org.
7
METHODS OF JUDGING:
Youth entries in all Departments, and entries in Creative Writing and Music, are judged according to the
Danish System. The Danish System of judging is based upon established standards of quality for each type of
product. Each exhibit is judged according to how well it meets that standard rather than how it compares
with other exhibits (as in the American System). Blue ribbons earn a score of 90-100, red ribbons 80-89, and white
ribbons 70-79.
The American System is used in all other Departments. In the American System, entries in each lot are judged in
comparison to the other entries in the lot. Entries are then awarded first, second, third, etc, according to relative
merit. Only one exhibit in each lot is awarded first place, one is awarded a second place, and etc.
COMPLETING EXHIBIT ENTRY TAGS:
Each exhibit must be accompanied by an Exhibit Tag, which are available at the Fair Office or from
your Town Representative. Please see the guidelines below.
Exhibitor identification numbers will be assigned by the Town Rep
or the Fair Office. Only one number per person will be issued, either
a new number or your number from past years.

DEPARTMENT B - FLOWERS
Entry Period: WEDNESDAY, July 24, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Judging: WEDNESDAY, July 24, 1 p.m.-8 p.m.
Judging System: American
- All specimens must have appropriate self-foliage attached to the
stem of the specimen unless otherwise noted, with the exception of gladioli, dahlia and
begonia classes.
- A tightly closed bud or one that has not sufficiently expanded to show the typical form
and beauty of the coming bloom is not acceptable as a bloom.
- A spike is a specimen with short or long influorescence, usually unbranched except in
delphinium. Florets surround the main axis at close intervals with buds developing on
the elongated tip, as in lupines, delphinium and gladiolus.
- A spray consists of one stem (not a branch), with or without a central flower or bud.
Any erect spray with the lead bloom open will be acceptable. Nemesia, cosmos and
godetia are spray types.
- Stalk designates a stiff stem, branching or not, with one or more flowers such as clarkia,
annual larkspur and lily.
- Stem is the main axis of a plant.
- Bloom is used to designate an individual flower terminating a stem, such as exhibition
type roses. If a Lot already exists for a category, “Other” may not be used. “Other”
varieties must be named.
- When 2 or more entries of the same type are entered, a new Lot will be created.
- Be sure and follow guidelines for each Lot as to number of items to enter. If 3 are called
for, 1 or 5 may disqualify, only 3 will be accepted.
- Grooming: Flowers and plants should be groomed to remove dirt and spray residue,
as well as dead foliage. Specimens may be groomed in any way which does not alter
their typical features.
- Indicate on tag if hothouse grown.
- Town Reps or out-of-town exhibitors: Please notify the Fair (766-2476) how many exhibits are coming on airlift.
- Classes and Lots are the same for each Division.
