Message from the President—Kathy Ayer
Have you ever felt like your family members
thought you were a little strange because of how
important your dogs are in your life? Perhaps
you’ve sensed that your neighbors think that
your involvement with your dogs is a little “over
the top.” If you’ve ever had those feelings, rest
assured that you are not alone. In Europe
there’s a whole continent full of people who are
way more “over the top” than you are!
best showcase the control they had of their
dogs. The routines were set to music, very often
included costumes and props, and were the
equivalent of a high school marching band with a
Newf in the heel position on the left of each band
member.
Sunday’s focus was water work. The Europeans
have gone high-tech, using motorized zodiacs
instead of row boats and short swim fins instead
of water shoes. About 50% of the time, the
handler swam out with the dog, and they
performed the rescue as a team. Most of the
dogs wore life jackets or harnesses with handles
and/or rings for people to grab on to while being
hauled in.
Mitch and I traveled to Torcy, France---just east
of Paris---for the 32nd Rencontre Internationale
des Amis du Terre-Neuve. That’s the 32nd
International Meeting of the Friends of the
Newfoundland for all of us who don’t speak
French. Twenty-two Newfoundland clubs
representing France, Luxembourg, Germany,
Switzerland, Spain, England, Wales, Italy, and

Rescue Committee Report – Ken Anctil
Wow, what an unbelievably busy time for rescue. If it hasn’t been the busiest time we’ve ever seen, it’s
certainly a runner up. We currently have six dogs in the program and another five have been adopted
out in the last four months alone.
Current fosters in the program:
Georgia
Georgia is a 110 lb., 1 year old leggy young girl that came to us via
owner surrender (as there was an altercation with another dog in the
original family). Georgia has been fine with us. She is very friendly and a
tail-wagger, finding no one to be a stranger, just a friend not yet sniffed!
We are grateful to Bill & Cherri Paluch for fostering her at this time.
Holly
Holly is a 15 month old Landseer being fostered by Kathryn and Kevin
Johnson. She’s sweet, kind, and loving to those that she knows, but
fearful of new things, people and dogs. She’s been fostered since last
December and made huge progress since that time, both medically with
eye infections and her emotional fears of “new stuff”. We are grateful
for the patience Kathryn and Kevin have shown with trips to the vet, potty
training, and supporting Holly’s growth.
Lil’Bit
Lil’Bit is a two year old black Newf, full of joy, life, and an intense
desire to be wherever the action is. She came into the program
with a torn cruciate and difficult to treat/persistent skin infections.
She’s also the tiniest Newf, coming in at just 67 lbs, that we have
seen in a long time. She’s now ready to be adopted by a family,
probably with kids, that is excited to get a pocket Newf…all of the
breed temperament, but just a little bit less to wash at that size!
She is currently being fostered by the Kathy Melton family.
Logan
Logan, a four year old Newf, loves our rescue program so much
that this is his SECOND time in it. J One of the most wonderful
things that all reputable rescue programs do is take dogs back into their program if the original
adoptions don’t work out. That was Logan’s case. He originally
came into our program in February of 2012, was fostered
originally by Kathryn and Kevin Johnson, and is being fostered
by them again. He is an epileptic Newf, but does very well on
his seizure meds.

Trevor
Trevor is a smart three year old male who came into our program last
December. His foster, Kristin Sharp, has been both incredibly patient and
diligent with his medical care as he was diagnosed with ringworm. This has
required multiple rounds of treatment, retesting, and more treatment. He
has been neutered and will soon be ready for a new family! (Last up for him
before adoption is allergy testing as his skin issues, even after treatment for
ringworm, continue to be a challenge).
Twinkle
Whew, what a trooper this girl is. On the one hand she is
incredibly sweet and LOVES to cuddle. She’s had a round of
tough skin issues and her spay is scheduled for July 2nd. As
usual, we are grateful to the care that Jennifer Stewart has given
to her foster! Twinkle will turn one year old this July, the month
she will be all ready for her furrever home!
Adoptions:
Baxter
Baxter is a young male that arrived emaciated and heartworm positive. He’s
come a long way since his October arrival; he gained weight and underwent
treatment for heartworms. His dog socialization skills were a little poor, so
we’re grateful to the Brenda Matheny family and pack for working with him!
He was, no doubt, a challenge at times. He was adopted in May.
Brother Bear
“Brother Bear” become too much for the original family that purchased him from a backyard breeder.
At the point he came into rescue he was 18 months old, 147 pounds, and well aware of his stature! He
had become too much for his family with 5 pre-teen kids. That family was thoughtful enough to make
sure his training and next home would be taken care of by rescue, rather than a random Craigslist ad.
Because his temperament was unfailingly sweet with people he was
brought into the program. He was, however, a resource guarder and
touchy with other dogs, enough so that with a generous donation by a
Club member a professional trainer was hired to make sure he become
fully ready to be adopted. With much training Brother Bear was deemed
ready for adoption to the right family. He was adopted in April and has
done well. Just this week we heard from his adopted family that “…and we
could not imagine our home without him.” (Brother Bear became a little
bit of a star pupil when his trainer used him as an example of a dog who
learned “healthy play.” (You can see the video here: http://

Rescue Committee Report – con’t
Harper
Harper was in foster care for over a year as her entropian
eye condition, poor skin, and spay were being handled. If
you search and look for her pictures on our OWNC
Facebook page, you can view the incredible transformation
that she has gone through. With much love and
excitement, she was adopted by Kathryn and Kevin Johnson
in March.
Nellie
We actually had ONE
Newf in recent times
whose adoption fees
were greater than our
expenses and her time in
the program was less than a month! Nellie’s owner was dying of
cancer. Her daughter reached out to us in order for her mother to be
at peace that her Newf would always have a wonderful home. Nellie
was fostered by Annalyn and Leo Paz and adopted very quickly in
March. Her new owners, who have had both Newfs and Pyrs for
many, many years, dote on her and know what a special Newf she’s
gotten the gift to take care of for someone who has passed on.
Queenie/Emma
Queenie/Emma came into the program in March. Queenie/
Emma had been passed around after her original owner died
before she came into rescue. The last person who owned her
finally acknowledged he could not afford her care and she
came into rescue in March. She was lovingly cared for by
Jennifer Stewart who made sure she was spayed and tested/
taken care of for her thyroid condition. She was adopted in
June.
Thanking a Rescue Board Member
The OWNC Rescue Board wishes to thank Andy Germann for her tireless efforts on the board this past
year. We know her efforts for rescue will continue with the rescue auction during the water test and in
so many other wonderful ways!

Forever in Our Hearts
I don’t know how many of
you got to meet this angel
but this is what he loved to
do! He loved working and we
never had to force him to do
anything. These are the last
lake pictures of Leopold. Even
when he was supposed to be
resting he did not want to!
He wanted to work! So to
make our little bear happy we
had to pretend to let him work. So we suited him up and I
pretended to drown but really I was crawling on the lake bottom.
He just thought he was saving me and it made his day. I know that
he is now watching over all of us, and swimming and running and
jumping and working all he wants to in heaven. I will forever miss
my teddy bear, and I look forward to the day when I get to see you
again. I know you never liked me much but secretly you loved me—
you just didn’t want anyone to know. Thank you so much for
holding on for me to get there to tell you goodbye! You will
forever have my heart poly bear!

a certified working dog, a Comfort Dog.
The evaluation was in Houston and it
was followed by a three-day workshop.
Being the only Newfoundland, she was
very much loved there!! Here is a

practice at Hobby. She has to be able to
fit on the floor in bulkhead, but not
have her paws over the metal strip into
the aisle. Ha!!

Welcome to Our World!
Trooper aka "Journey & Haytee's Lone
Stars & Gun Smoke"
Hard to believe that it has been over 10
years since we had a puppy. It is
wonderful to be able to hug them every
day while we can still call them little
ones. Little Trooper has brought a lot of
joy to our household and is really a good
little trooper.

I’ve always said “They’re like potato chips…right?”
Well, what’s one more?
Introducing Rio Nova Against All Odds
“Rachel”
She’s already showing signs of becoming a great Water Rescue
Dog, don’t you think!?
We had so much fun doing this photo shoot. The ladies at Pink
Ribbon Puppies are amazing and put so much of their heart and
soul into their projects.
This charity is near and dear to my heart having lost family and
friends to this dreadful disease. They produce a calendar each
year with the most adorable puppy models. ALL proceeds from
their calendar sales go to The Breast Cancer Research
Foundation.
We hope to see Rachel on one of the 2015 pages.
I can’t tell you how thrilled we are to watch this little girl grow.
She and Nova are becoming fast friends and she has added so
much joy, along with mischief, to the family already.
Rachel says she is looking forward to the Tadpole event and we
both hope to see everyone at the water test this fall.

Sometimes things work out in mysterious ways…… A year ago we met the Salmelin sisters at the OWNC
Water Rescue camp and became fast friends. We always followed their adventures across the pond and
loved seeing the working and training events that they constantly would participate in …….and then they
announced a litter of pups -- so after lots of thought, questioning our sanity, and late nite decision
making, we decided to put our name on the “list” for one of the pups. We have our two wonderful
boys and our border collie girl, so adding a newf girl this time became the plan………and boy, did she
develop personality in no time flat! She’s our little brown girl who already has earned the nickname of
“Texas Tornado” and is quite the active girl. Everyone say hello to KIMBER!!!

Meggie and Jack now have a baby brother! He’s excited to be in Texas and we are looking forward to
watching him and his sister Kimber grow up with each other! dfw
