Executive Director’s Message
What an outstanding summer we have had! Now it’s time for our second season, one of the
most spectacular times of the year in our region- the water is warm, the sunsets are exquisite, crowds thin a little bit and there is time to enjoy the natural beauty that is all around
us. Of course, September means weekends filled with events such as Sunfest, OC BikeFest
and Wine on the Beach, just to name a few.
We would like to also invite you to attend the annual Membership Meeting on September
8th at the Dunes Manor, who will be sponsoring a wonderful breakfast for everyone. This
event allows us to get together post season, talk about how to optimize your membership

award winners at the Annual Chamber Awards Celebration on September 13th. the 2016-2017 Ocean City

the official announcement that there will be an executive order issued, requiring all counties schools to
begin AFTER Labor Day! The chamber has been working on this initiative for almost 4 years and we

As part of an ongoing effort to provide value to our members, the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce has partnered with energy
experts CQI Associates to offer you the services of the Commercial Energy Co-op. We are happy to announce the Fall 2016 enrollment campaign is underway. Joining the Chamber's Energy Co-op Program provides:

Increased Purchasing Power in procuring competitive electric and natural gas rates.

Eliminates the need to ‘go through it alone’.

Budget Stability by offering Fixed Rate energy supply costs.
Year round Customer Support through energy experts CQI Associates.
Several factors are cause for concern about the market rates in 2016:
Present electric and natural gas commodity rates have decreased. However, increased capacity and regulatory charges have resulted in
overall rates to increase. Geo political situations such as the Chinese economy, Britain exiting EU and Iran exporting oil are causing volatility
in the stock markets, in addition to terrorist attacks around the world. These factors along with presidential elections raise concerns over
future utility rates.
Procuring utility rates from third party suppliers remains a viable means to reduce utility expenses. Additional savings can now be seen
through restructuring of usage through Demand Response programs, automated systems, and renewable energy options.
To familiarize everyone with the program, CQI Associates will be hosting webinars on the following days:

State of Maryland
Video Lottery Terminal Fund Manager
MCE to allocate funds to invest $2.6 million into eligible targeted business on the Eastern Shore
Maryland Capital Enterprises has been awarded a $2.6 million allocation over a two year period and
contract by the Maryland Department of Commerce to serve as one of eight Small, Minority and Women
-Owned Business Account - Video Lottery Terminal (VLT) Fund Managers in the State of Maryland.
The State of Maryland allocates 1.5% from the revenue proceeds of video lottery terminals at each of the
video lottery facilities in the State of Maryland to provide capital or loans to eligible targeted businesses.
MCE is the only fund manager on the Eastern Shore to receive this allocation.
“The additional loan award from the Maryland Department of Commerce supports MCE’s mission to
help communities prosper through developing new and existing small businesses and creating and retaining jobs,” said George Koste, Executive Director of Maryland Capital Enterprises.

Maryland Capital Enterprises, Inc. (MCE) is a private nonprofit that helps build communities by supporting self-employed small business owners who are committed to their businesses, but who otherwise lack the experience or credit history that could give them access to conventional loans and other financial products. MCE has been operating on the Eastern Shore of Maryland for over 16 years,
where it provides small business loans, business counseling and business education, and helps develop business plans for entrepreneurs so that they can start, expand or purchase existing businesses.

SDMS Kiwanis Builders Club Receives Global Award
Stephen Decatur Middle School (SDMS) has a very active Kiwanis Student Leadership "Builders
Club" sponsored by the parent Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City. The club recently received a most distinguished "2016 Global Literacy Champion Award" for their project
to collect books and send them to the library in Chadabwa CDDS (Malawi) Africa as part of the
African Library Project, which was initiated by Kiwanis International.
Congratulations to the Stephen Decatur Builders Club, it's teacher advisor, Mindy BankertOuellet and the Kiwanis Liaison to the Builders Club, Jackie Todd, for their inspiring commitment to "Serving the Children of the World".
Coming Soon – Video of Commissioners
Meetings on County Website
Good news for those interested in staying current on Worcester County legislative and administrative issues, but are unable to attend the meetings of the Board of County Commissioners of Worcester
County. In the coming months, the Commissioners’ bimonthly meetings, which take place on the first and
third Tuesdays, will be videotaped and available for viewing after the meeting on the county website at
www.co.worcester.md.us.
On Tuesday, August 16, 2016, the Commissioners accepted a proposal from ePlus to install a fully
automated audio visual system in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room in the Worcester County Government Center in Snow Hill at a total installed cost of $24,509. This audio visual package is far less costly
than recording options the Commissioners had considered in the past, some of which were estimated to
cost upwards of $200,000.
We are thrilled to be able to offer this new service to all. Additional details will be released via local
news outlets, as well as the Worcester County website, Facebook and Twitter pages when the new audio
visual system is operational and video footage after each meeting is available on the county website.
