“Expand the definition of ‘reading’ to include non-fiction, humor, graphic
novels, magazines, action adventure, and, yes, even websites. It’s the
pleasure of reading that counts; the focus will naturally broaden. A boy won’t
read shark books forever.” ~Jon Scieszka

Every so often library staff comes
across items left behind by library
users. Sometimes these items are
claimed right away and sometimes
they hang around.
Winter is the biggest time for lost
items, usually mittens, toques and
scarves, but we have found all
sorts of things left on tables, at
the public computers, and in the
photocopier. If there is some way
to identify and contact the owner
we do so.
If you think you have left something
at the Library, please give us a
call or stop by.
We hold onto
items for one
month at the
front desk.

Book Review - M o o n C a l l e d b y P a t r i c i a B r i g g s ( A P B F B R I )
Tired of reading about helpless heroines caught up
in the midst of a battle between supernatural creatures? Annoyed with cliches?
Pick up the first volume in the Mercy
Thompson series, Moon Called. Resembling Buffy the Vampire Slayer
more than Bella Swan from Twilight,
Mercy is a sharp tongued mechanic
in a world where the Fae are out to
the public eye, with vampires, witches and werewolves lurking in the
shadows. Full of sarcasm and wit,
Mercy has the ability to painlessly
shape shift into coyote form.
Raised in a werewolf pack, Mercy's
past makes her a target for a werewolf drug lord who is conducting
experiments on lone wolves and attempting to gain control of the Alpha
in the area, Adam. Mercy faces the
threat of the drug lord with courage
and pluck, despite being outmatched
and out of her league.
Why I picked it up: A friend had recommended
the novel to me a few months ago and I decided to
see if the new series would be interesting to me.
The front illustration and summary on the back
cover does not do the book justice, marketing it as
another paranormal romance instead of
the action packed mystery it is.
Why I finished it: Mercy's personality
is engaging and the mystery is compelling. This novel starts quickly and
doesn't let the reader put it down. The
settings and characters are richly developed and believable. Patricia Briggs
has written the start to a wonderful series that challenged my preconceived
notions surrounding urban fantasy.
Who I would give this book to: Readers looking for a paranormal novel full
of adventure and strong characters.
Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jim
Butcher's Dresden Files, Supernatural,
Carrie Vaughn and Rob Thurman will
enjoy this. Pick up Moon Called at the
library today!
