message from the chair
ow, our third year of the Arts Without Borders Festival! Each year has been very different with our first year being run in conjunction with the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards and our second year as the cultural component of the Saskatchewan Summer Games.
This year brings new ideas, events and venues. Our Event Chairs and Committee Members have been working diligently to bring an array of events to
the City of Lloydminster. 17
18
We thank all our volunteers for their time and energy given so freely to make
this festival happen. Many thanks to our local businesses, organizations, and
supporting individuals. We really appreciate your support.

BECAUSE
ARTS MATTER
6
Barr Colony Heritage Cultural
Centre Artist in Residence, Laura Hale presents community collaborations of outdoor installation art, including:
1) Holy Rosary High School sphere project,
2) Mid West Canadian Artists Secret Moonlight Fantasy Lagoon, and
3) Site-specific installation by Laura Hale.
Laura Hale
As a visual artist, I work across many disciplines
incorporating a wide variety of materials and production methods. With a background in theatre my work
is often temporary, large-scale, ephemeral, site specific
installations that involves community participation and
shared community spaces.
I am influenced by the beauty and extreme qualities of
our environment. As a result my work often focuses on
public intervention landscape art, working with organic
materials to create outdoor installations that will with
time disintegrate and return to the earth.
My hope, in creating this type of work, is that the
identity of a community’s culture, nature, history and
function is strengthened and challenged. Also, that the
community participants and viewers experience a shift in
their awareness about what is considered art but also the
temporal quality of our lives and our relationship to the
environment.

quick draw and juried art awards
Local and regional artists will have one hour to complete and frame
a piece of art right before your eyes. The Quick Draw is a special
opportunity for artists to be leaders in establishing an awareness of
the creative process involved in making art. It provides a wonderful
occasion for the public to gain insight into the area’s artists and the
work that they produce.
All too often the viewing public’s exposure to art is only through a
gallery or static events. Rarely do they have an opportunity to engage
the artists while they are creating. The Quick Draw event allows the
public to get a much more personal understanding of the creative
process.
All artwork created in the Quick Draw will be auctioned off immediately via silent auction. The Quick Draw Silent Auction
opens as the artists begin working. The Juried Art Show Awards will be presented following the Quick Draw Event.

Hothouse 4 /
National Film Board
of Canada (ca. 30
min.)
Take six promising animation filmmakers from across
Canada, plus two from
Brazil, plant them in the NFB’s English
Animation Studio, give them 12 weeks
to create extremely short animation from
concept to release with the full support
and assistance of NFB creative experts
and, voilà. Watch the results plus a short
film about the process.
Escher: Sky and
water & The Irises
/ National Film
Board of Canada
(ca. 7 min)
Two innovative Canadian filmmakers bring
their creative vision to
the drawings and paintings of Escher and
Van Gogh. Each film is an inspired exploration of the original artwork through the
medium of animation
18
Talespinners 2 / National Film
Board of Canada (ca. 60 min)
For ages 5-9. Includes seven tales of
children who confront challenges with
ingenuity and creativity. Each story brings
facets of a different cultural community
to the screen, through a setting, accent,
folk element, tradition, particular food or
vocabulary
The Triplets of Belleville / directed by Sylvain Chomet
(81 min) Rated PG
Talespinners / National Film
Board of Canada (ca. 45 min)
An exceptional and vibrant collection of
short animated films for children age 5-9.
Adapted from books, each film is based on
an acclaimed cross-cultural children’s story
that will engage young viewers with appealing characters and dynamic storylines,
while sparking their imaginations.
Second Debut;
Stitches in Time &
My Grandmother
Ironed the King’s
Shirts / National
Film Board of
Canada (ca. 25
min)
Three award-winning
films that reflect the
richness of human experience. Sophie, at
her retirement party, announces that she
doesn’t have time to be old. Two friends
rock and knit together while their lives
flashback to memorable moments. A
Norwegian woman uses humble means to
thwart an ill-intentioned king.
19
When her grandson is kidnapped during the Tour de France, Madame Souza
and her beloved pooch Bruno team up with the Belleville Sisters--an aged
song-and-dance team from the days of Fred Astaire--to rescue him. Winner of
the 2005 Genie for best motion picture.
Stowaway; The Song-Catcher & Black Soul /
National Film Board of Canada (ca. 30 min)
Using sand animation on underlit glass plates, Stowaway is
adapted from a story by the Portuguese writer José Rodrigues Miguéis. Profoundly melancholy in its expressive
and richly textured imagery, the film is about one man’s
agonizing struggle for freedom. The Song-Catcher takes us
into the world of a sad old man obsessed by the memory of
the woman he once loved. He spends his days chasing and
collecting butterflies as life slowly passes him by. Black Soul
is an exhilarating immersion into the heart of Black culture
via a whirlwind voyage through the defining moments of Black History.
Lonesome Monsieur Turgeon &
A Hunting Lesson / National Film Board
of Canada (ca. 27 min)
A digital urban tale with the naïve style of paper
cut-outs, Lonesome Monsieur Turgeon is an amusing but sympathetic portrait of a man who feels all
alone in the world. If only he could connect with
the people around him. Pinhole animation master
Jacques Drouin takes A hunting lesson, a book by
Jacques Godbout, and brings to life the wild savannahs of Africa and the colours and textures of a
Canadian autumn in hunting season.
