Overdraft Privilege is Here!
Students Receive Recognition for
Participation at In-School Branches
Two 5th grade student tellers from the Belair
Elementary in-school branch receive recognition
for a job well done. Next year’s 5th graders will
teach the new 4th grade tellers how to run the
branch.
SRP is proud to offer in-school
branches at some local elementary
schools. Two of these schools recently
had award days and acknowledged
the hard work of their student tellers.
Fourth and fifth grade students are
chosen to work at their in-school
branch and handle deposits made
from other students into their Frugal
Freddie savings accounts. Each year
the fifth graders teach the new fourth
grader workers how to run the branch
by demonstrating how to write
deposit slips, handle cash, and more.
Peach Orchard Branch
employee, Carolyn Ellis,
presents Deer Chase
Elementary students with
certificates to thank them
for their work in SRP’s inschool branch.
Protect Yourself
With Proof of Insurance and Avoid
Collateral Protection Insurance
Your credit union now uses a
system to track and monitor the
insurance status of our loans. As a
lien holder, we depend on comprehensive and collision insurance to
protect our credit union from uninsured loss. The terms of your loan
contract require this coverage for the
life of the loan. You can avoid the
added cost of Collateral Protection
Insurance by keeping your insurance
policy up to date.
If you have a lapse in coverage,
a Collateral Insurance Policy may
be placed on your loan with the cost
added to your monthly loan payment.
Collateral Protection Insurance
protects the credit union, but does
not cover the borrower, and is no
substitute for traditional insurance.
If you receive a letter asking for
proof of insurance, please act
quickly and send in your documentation as soon as possible to avoid
any inconvenience.

When You Change Jobs,
Should You Change Your 401k?
Content developed by CUNA Brokerage Services,
provided by Les Branson
Job transitions can be stressful. During these
periods of change, it is easy to forget one of the
most important decisions you have to make:
What should you do with your qualified retirement savings, such as your 401(k)?
The consequences of taking your money out rashly
may include (but are not limited to) the following:
• 20% Withholding: Your employer is required to
withhold 20% of the total amount to cover any
potential federal taxes that you might owe.
Keep in mind that you may owe more than the
20% that is withheld.
• The Tax Man Cometh: You are subject to federal and state income taxes on both taxdeductible contributions and tax-deferred
growth.
• 10% Penalty: Early withdrawal penalties of
10% may apply if you are age 59½ or younger.
Keep Your Retirement Money Working
If you would like to keep more of your retirement
savings growing tax deferred and minimize your
current tax bill, there are options to consider.
• Consolidate Your Retirement Savings into One
IRA by transferring your retirement plan to an
IRA, you have the ability to consolidate several
different IRAs into a single account.
• Move Your Retirement Savings to Your New
Employer’s Plan if your new employer allows it,
this may be an attractive option for you.
• Keep Your Retirement Savings in Your Current
Employer’s Plan. You might consider leaving
your retirement savings in the existing plan
even after you have left the company.
Understanding Your Options
Review and discuss your options with an experienced Financial Advisor. Together you can identify a solution that will work for your needs today
and throughout your retirement.

SRP thanks all the youth who participated in National Credit Union Youth

Your home and wallet may take a serious
beating when a big storm hits and with several recent storms and tornadoes,
Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be wary of fly-by-night “storm
chasers,” as well as fraudulent charities
promising to provide relief.
Repairing Storm Damage
Storm chasers and other door-to-door
salespeople often peddle dubious deals that
may cost homeowners thousands of dollars
and create serious headaches.
Recognize the red flags. Beware of any contractor who uses high pressure sales tactics
or requires full payment upfront. Also avoid
contractors who require you
to get the necessary permits. Beware of
low-ball estimates that may potentially balloon over time or foreshadow shoddy work
to come.
Make sure everything is in writing. Make
sure that the full scope of the work is
explained in the contract including cleanup
and disposal of waste. All verbal agreements need to be included in the written
agreement. Pay close attention to the pay-

business for references from recent jobs.
Confirm whether or not the contractor will
be subcontracting the job or relying on
their own employees. Start Your Search
with BBB. In addition to offering Business
Reviews on tens of thousands of contractors-good and bad-across the US, you can
also rely on BBB’s Accredited Business
Locator to find trustworthy contractors in
your area. You can find this information by
visiting www.bbb.org.
Donating to Charities
Find trustworthy charities when aiding to
relief. BBB Wise Giving Alliance urges
donors to make sure their donations will go
to legitimate and reputable charities and
relief efforts that have the capability to help
those in need. Be cautious when relying on
third-party recommendations such as bloggers or other Web sites, as they might not
have fully researched the listed relief organizations. In response to the previous natural disasters, there were concerns raised
about many Web sites and new organizations that were created overnight allegedly
to help victims. Interested donors should
visit www.bbb.org/charity to research charities and relief organizations to verify that
they are accredited by the BBB.

Saving Money at the Pump
Tips to Stretch Your Gas Dollars
Whether driving cross-town or crosscountry, everybody wants to save
money at the pump. Regardless of the
make and model, your car’s estimated
gas mileage is just that — an estimate.
An important variable is how you fuel,
drive, and maintain your car. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the
nation’s consumer protection agency,
offers these bumper-to-bumper tips to
help you get the most mileage out of
your gas purchases:
AT THE PUMP
— Check your owner’s manual for the
most effective octane level for your
car. For most cars, the recommended
gasoline is regular octane. In most
cases, using a higher octane gas than
the manufacturer recommends offers
no benefit — and costs you at the
pump. Some cars do require premium
fuel, so before you fill up, check your
owner’s manual to find out if the
higher-priced gas is required or just
recommended.
— Shop around. Specialized phone
apps and websites can help you find
the cheapest gas prices in your area.
Also, many gas stations advertise regular weekly specials at their locations.
— Charge it. Consider a credit card
that offers cash back for gas purchases. Some offer two to five percent
rebates, but it’s wise to read the fine
print. Fees, charges, interest rates,
and benefits can vary among credit
card issuers.
ON THE ROAD
— Start driving as soon as the engine
is started. Modern engines don’t need
much time to warm up. The engine
actually warms up more
quickly once the car is
operating, and will stay
warm after stopping.
— Don’t speed. Gas
mileage decreases rapidly
at speeds above 60 miles
per hour. According to
Fueleconomy.gov, each 5 mph you
drive over 60 mph is like paying an
additional 24 cents per gallon for gas.
— Avoid unnecessary idling. It wastes
fuel, costs you money, and pollutes
the air. Turn off the engine if you
anticipate a wait.
— Use overdrive gears and cruise
control when appropriate. They
improve fuel economy when you’re
driving on the highway.
— Minimize the need to brake by
anticipating traffic conditions. Be alert
for slow-downs and red lights. Anticipate bends and turns on familiar
roads. Letting up on the gas often
eliminates the need for braking.
— Avoid jackrabbit starts and stops.
Avoiding these can increase your mpg
and prolong the life of your brakes.
— Use the air conditioner only when
you absolutely need it. Air conditioning dramatically reduces fuel economy. Most air conditioners have an
“economy” setting that allows the circulation of unchilled air. Many also
have a “maximum” or “recirculation”
setting that reduces the amount of hot
outside air that must be chilled. Both
settings can reduce the air conditioning load — and save gas.
— Combine errands. Several short
trips taken from a cold start can use
twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance when the
engine is warm.
— Remove excess weight from the
trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the
trunk can reduce a typical car’s fuel
economy by up to two percent.
— Avoid packing items on top of your
car. A loaded roof rack or carrier creates wind resistance and can decrease
fuel economy by five percent.
AT THE GARAGE
— Keep your engine tuned. Tuning
your engine according to your owner’s
manual can increase gas mileage by
an average of four percent.
— Keep your tires properly inflated
and aligned. It can increase gas
mileage up to three percent, improve
handling, and prolong the life of your
tires. Check your owner’s manual or
the door jamb for the proper level of
inflation (not the tire itself, which
shows the maximum tire inflation
pressure); check the tire pressure
when the tires are cold, because internal pressure increases when the car
has been on the road for a while and
the tires heat up.
— Change your oil. According to the
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
and Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), you can improve your gas
mileage by using the manufacturer’s
recommended grade of motor oil.
Motor oil that says “Energy Conserving” on the performance symbol of the
American Petroleum Institute contains friction-reducing additives that
can improve fuel economy.

is started. Modern engines don’t need
much time to warm up. The engine
actually warms up more
quickly once the car is
operating, and will stay
warm after stopping.
— Don’t speed. Gas
mileage decreases rapidly
at speeds above 60 miles
per hour. According to
Fueleconomy.gov, each 5 mph you
drive over 60 mph is like paying an
additional 24 cents per gallon for gas.
— Avoid unnecessary idling. It wastes
fuel, costs you money, and pollutes
the air. Turn off the engine if you
anticipate a wait.
— Use overdrive gears and cruise
control when appropriate. They
improve fuel economy when you’re
driving on the highway.
— Minimize the need to brake by
anticipating traffic conditions. Be alert
for slow-downs and red lights. Anticipate bends and turns on familiar
roads. Letting up on the gas often
eliminates the need for braking.
— Avoid jackrabbit starts and stops.
Avoiding these can increase your mpg
and prolong the life of your brakes.
— Use the air conditioner only when
you absolutely need it. Air conditioning dramatically reduces fuel economy. Most air conditioners have an
“economy” setting that allows the circulation of unchilled air. Many also
have a “maximum” or “recirculation”
setting that reduces the amount of hot
outside air that must be chilled. Both
settings can reduce the air conditioning load — and save gas.
— Combine errands. Several short
trips taken from a cold start can use
twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance when the
engine is warm.
— Remove excess weight from the
trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the
trunk can reduce a typical car’s fuel
economy by up to two percent.
— Avoid packing items on top of your
car. A loaded roof rack or carrier creates wind resistance and can decrease
fuel economy by five percent.
AT THE GARAGE
— Keep your engine tuned. Tuning
your engine according to your owner’s
manual can increase gas mileage by
an average of four percent.
— Keep your tires properly inflated
and aligned. It can increase gas
mileage up to three percent, improve
handling, and prolong the life of your
tires. Check your owner’s manual or
the door jamb for the proper level of
inflation (not the tire itself, which
shows the maximum tire inflation
pressure); check the tire pressure
when the tires are cold, because internal pressure increases when the car
has been on the road for a while and
the tires heat up.
— Change your oil. According to the
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
and Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), you can improve your gas
mileage by using the manufacturer’s
recommended grade of motor oil.
Motor oil that says “Energy Conserving” on the performance symbol of the
American Petroleum Institute contains friction-reducing additives that
can improve fuel economy.

Scammers May be Chasing Your Wallet in Light of Recent Storms

Youth Week Winners
SRP thanks all the youth who participated in National Credit Union Youth
Week. This year’s theme was “Money
Rocks at my Credit Union” and encouraged kids to be saving rock stars! Young

Your home and wallet may take a serious
beating when a big storm hits and with several recent storms and tornadoes,
Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be wary of fly-by-night “storm
chasers,” as well as fraudulent charities
promising to provide relief.
Repairing Storm Damage
Storm chasers and other door-to-door
salespeople often peddle dubious deals that
may cost homeowners thousands of dollars
and create serious headaches.
Recognize the red flags. Beware of any contractor who uses high pressure sales tactics
or requires full payment upfront. Also avoid
contractors who require you
to get the necessary permits. Beware of
low-ball estimates that may potentially balloon over time or foreshadow shoddy work
to come.
Make sure everything is in writing. Make
sure that the full scope of the work is
explained in the contract including cleanup
and disposal of waste. All verbal agreements need to be included in the written
agreement. Pay close attention to the pay-
2
business for references from recent jobs.
Confirm whether or not the contractor will
be subcontracting the job or relying on
their own employees. Start Your Search
with BBB. In addition to offering Business
Reviews on tens of thousands of contractors-good and bad-across the US, you can
also rely on BBB’s Accredited Business
Locator to find trustworthy contractors in
your area. You can find this information by
visiting www.bbb.org.
Donating to Charities
Find trustworthy charities when aiding to
relief. BBB Wise Giving Alliance urges
donors to make sure their donations will go
to legitimate and reputable charities and
relief efforts that have the capability to help
those in need. Be cautious when relying on
third-party recommendations such as bloggers or other Web sites, as they might not
have fully researched the listed relief organizations. In response to the previous natural disasters, there were concerns raised
about many Web sites and new organizations that were created overnight allegedly
to help victims. Interested donors should
visit www.bbb.org/charity to research charities and relief organizations to verify that
they are accredited by the BBB.

Saving Money at the Pump
Tips to Stretch Your Gas Dollars
Whether driving cross-town or crosscountry, everybody wants to save
money at the pump. Regardless of the
make and model, your car’s estimated
gas mileage is just that — an estimate.
An important variable is how you fuel,
drive, and maintain your car. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the
nation’s consumer protection agency,
offers these bumper-to-bumper tips to
help you get the most mileage out of
your gas purchases:
AT THE PUMP
— Check your owner’s manual for the
most effective octane level for your
car. For most cars, the recommended
gasoline is regular octane. In most
cases, using a higher octane gas than
the manufacturer recommends offers
no benefit — and costs you at the
pump. Some cars do require premium
fuel, so before you fill up, check your
owner’s manual to find out if the
higher-priced gas is required or just
recommended.
— Shop around. Specialized phone
apps and websites can help you find
the cheapest gas prices in your area.
Also, many gas stations advertise regular weekly specials at their locations.
— Charge it. Consider a credit card
that offers cash back for gas purchases. Some offer two to five percent
rebates, but it’s wise to read the fine
print. Fees, charges, interest rates,
and benefits can vary among credit
card issuers.
ON THE ROAD
— Start driving as soon as the engine
is started. Modern engines don’t need
much time to warm up. The engine
actually warms up more
quickly once the car is
operating, and will stay
warm after stopping.
— Don’t speed. Gas
mileage decreases rapidly
at speeds above 60 miles
per hour. According to
Fueleconomy.gov, each 5 mph you
drive over 60 mph is like paying an
additional 24 cents per gallon for gas.
— Avoid unnecessary idling. It wastes
fuel, costs you money, and pollutes
the air. Turn off the engine if you
anticipate a wait.
— Use overdrive gears and cruise
control when appropriate. They
improve fuel economy when you’re
driving on the highway.
— Minimize the need to brake by
anticipating traffic conditions. Be alert
for slow-downs and red lights. Anticipate bends and turns on familiar
roads. Letting up on the gas often
eliminates the need for braking.
— Avoid jackrabbit starts and stops.
Avoiding these can increase your mpg
and prolong the life of your brakes.
— Use the air conditioner only when
you absolutely need it. Air conditioning dramatically reduces fuel economy. Most air conditioners have an
“economy” setting that allows the circulation of unchilled air. Many also
have a “maximum” or “recirculation”
setting that reduces the amount of hot
outside air that must be chilled. Both
settings can reduce the air conditioning load — and save gas.
— Combine errands. Several short
trips taken from a cold start can use
twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance when the
engine is warm.
— Remove excess weight from the
trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the
trunk can reduce a typical car’s fuel
economy by up to two percent.
— Avoid packing items on top of your
car. A loaded roof rack or carrier creates wind resistance and can decrease
fuel economy by five percent.
AT THE GARAGE
— Keep your engine tuned. Tuning
your engine according to your owner’s

an average of four percent.
— Keep your tires properly inflated
and aligned. It can increase gas
mileage up to three percent, improve
handling, and prolong the life of your
tires. Check your owner’s manual or
the door jamb for the proper level of
inflation (not the tire itself, which
shows the maximum tire inflation
pressure); check the tire pressure
when the tires are cold, because internal pressure increases when the car
has been on the road for a while and
the tires heat up.
— Change your oil. According to the
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
and Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), you can improve your gas
mileage by using the manufacturer’s
recommended grade of motor oil.

Protect Yourself
With Proof of Insurance and Avoid
Collateral Protection Insurance
Your credit union now uses a
system to track and monitor the
insurance status of our loans. As a
lien holder, we depend on comprehensive and collision insurance to
protect our credit union from uninsured loss. The terms of your loan
contract require this coverage for the
life of the loan. You can avoid the
added cost of Collateral Protection
Insurance by keeping your insurance
policy up to date.
If you have a lapse in coverage,
a Collateral Insurance Policy may
be placed on your loan with the cost
added to your monthly loan payment.
Collateral Protection Insurance
protects the credit union, but does
not cover the borrower, and is no
substitute for traditional insurance.
If you receive a letter asking for
proof of insurance, please act
quickly and send in your documentation as soon as possible to avoid
any inconvenience.

members with individual or jointly-owned checking accounts in good standing.
The pre-determined limit offered to our
members is $500 and is limited to one
account per member.
Your Overdraft Privilege limit may be
available for checks and other transactions
made using your checking account number or
automatic bill payment and recurring debit
card payments. Also, at your request, we may
authorize and pay ATM transfers or withdrawals and everyday debit card purchases
using your limit. There is no cost for Overdraft
Privilege unless you use it. For each overdraft
item paid, you’ll be charged our Overdraft
Privilege Fee, currently up to $32.**
At SRP Federal Credit Union, we are always looking for new and better ways
to provide additional value to our members. Overdraft Privilege is just one more
service we are offering to help make your life a little easier.
If you have any questions or would like to have Overdraft Privilege removed
from your account, please call 1-800-237-9829 or 803-278-4851 and select 1
for Member Services or visit any SRP Federal Credit Union branch.
