A few words from Fr. Dariusz
In today’s Gospel Reading, Jesus addressed the nature of sin. He asked, “Do you think that because these
Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans?” Or those eighteen who
were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them - do you think that they were worse offenders than all
the others living in Jerusalem? He said, “No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as
they did.” In other words, a sin is a sin! There is no such thing as a big sin versus a small sin. Nor is there
such a thing as a good sin versus a bad sin. A sin is a sin! If we offend God, then we have offended God.
We cannot walk away and say that we did not offend God because it was a small sin. Also we cannot say
That it was not a big deal because it was a small sin. A sin is a transgression against God. To sin is to
offend God, to reject His holy ways.
In the Gospel Reading, Jesus tells us a parable about the fig tree. This parable immediately follows after Jesus explains that sin is offensive to God, that it deserves punishment. Jesus wants to point out the sin of indifference, the sin of neglect of one’s responsibilities toward God.
In this parable, Jesus is talking about those who are indifferent to their salvation. He is talking about those who refuse to live their faith
in Christ by performing good works, those who reject the grace of his Father.
The man who planted the vineyard is the Lord Jesus. The fig tree in the garden is one of many. We Christians each represent one fig
tree. Each fig tree is expected to bear fruit that represent the good works and virtues of those who help to build the Body of Christ. Each
Christian has to answer his calling according to where he has been sent by God.
A fig tree that does not produce any fruits after three years should be thrown into the fire to burn until there is nothing left of it.
In the First Reading from the Book of Exodus, we read that God observes the misery of His people. He hears their cries on account of
their taskmasters. So He went to deliver them from the Egyptians.
The Second Reading provides us with more information about God’s people. We learn that God did free His people from slavery. They
were all Baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food. They all drank the same spiritual drink.
But, even though they were God’s people, He was not pleased with most of them. And He struck them down in the wilderness.
During this Lenten season we have many opportunities to be reconciled with the Lord. We have many opportunities to bear good fruit by
doing acts of charity, penance, and love.

shelter for the homeless, moves each
week to a new Church. This is the 19th
year that Christnet has provided shelter.
It is a nighttime program where the homeless receive meals and a warm, safe place

FOOD PANTRY UPDATE
Thank you for responding to last week’s request for donations to the parish food pantry. Although the weather was a little warmer than
usual, we still had many visitors, in fact, more than we expected. We are indebted to all of you who took the time to shop and bring
your donations to the church or office. Every week we are reminded of the difficulty of having enough money to feed the family by
those who come for help. Putting a decent meal on the table can be very difficult when there is little or no income. Fortunately, we
were able to give food to all the families who came to our pantry. The smiles and thanks we receive are very rewarding and a great testimonial to our parish family who make it possible for the pantry’s existence. We hope to be there for a long time so we can continue
providing food to those who would go hungry if our pantry did not exist. Any donations of the following items would really be appreciated: Cereal, Juice, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Canned Milk, Macaroni & Cheese, Spaghetti Sauce, Spaghetti Noodles, Spaghetti-O’s,
Canned Meat, All varieties of Soups, Canned Fruit, Pancake Mix & Syrup, Pork & Beans, Sloppy Joe Mix, Canned Vegetables,
Laundry Detergent, Bar Soap, Toothpaste, Toilet Paper, Baby Food, Diapers, Children’s Snacks, Milk, Eggs, Meat. Perishable
items should be brought to the parish office. In addition, the following products are also sorely needed. Although the following items
are things we normally use each day, they cannot be purchased with food stamps or bridge cards making it difficult for people who need
them but cannot afford to buy them: Hand Soap, Dishwashing Soap, Deodorant, Toothpaste, Mouth Wash, and Detergent. Please
know how much we appreciate your care and concern. Our pantry could not function without our parish family.

food that has expired.

Most of you are probably thinking the Festival is a long way off but then
we all know how time can fly by very quickly. Lent has already started which means Easter will be here soon.
Some of you may already be planning your flower or vegetable gardens and can’t wait to start digging in the dirt.
How about college and / or school graduations? And, before you know it, school is out. So how about planning
some time to help out at the Festival before your calendar is all filled up. It promises to be another great event
again this year. It’s not only a great fund raiser but it’s a time for all of us to come together as a family, work as a
team and help whenever and wherever we’re needed. Your time and talent can be used in many areas such as
Games, Rides, Vegas Tent, Raffles, Bingo, Food Booths, etc. You can select the best time and place when you
want to help. It’s your choice! The more events we have, the more people we need. Remember those dates, decide when and where you want to volunteer and be ready to enjoy a great weekend in June.
We are looking for chairpersons for the following booths: AMERICAN, PIZZA, BINGO, AND POLISH
FOOD BOOTHS — Call Jerry or Marge Ziemba 313-295-4985 and tell them you’ll be glad to volunteer to
chair one of these booths. Remember to set these days aside and SPREAD THE WORD!

Nurse Ministry Notes
Next Sunday, March 10, 2013 is the date
of the American Red Cross Blood Drive
which is coordinated by members of
OLOA Parish Nurse Ministry. Donation
times are from 8:30am to 2:15pm in the
parish center. This particular drive is
special to us. It is dedicated to the memory of Rob Squires who passed away last
September at the age of 46. Rob was a
parishioner and a registered nurse who
worked for the American Red Cross at
blood drives in the area. It would be a
wonderful tribute to Rob to donate in his
honor. Rob worked as a registered nurse
for 16 years - - the past 10 years with the
Red Cross. He was also a member of the
Knights of Columbus. He was married to
his wife, Eileen, for 23 years and had 2
sons, Ryan 16 and Robert 14. Rob was an
organ donor who gave the gift of life to
many persons after his death - - - - - - it
takes a hero. You can be a hero by donating blood next Sunday. If you have not
already scheduled an appointment for
donation, you can call the parish office at
313-381-3000. Walk-ins are always welcome, but an appointment would expedite
the donation process. Please help to make
this blood drive a success!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

“BEEF & NOODLE CASSEROLE”
INGREDIENTS:
1 16oz. pkg. Egg Noodles
2 lbs. Ground Beef or Ground Turkey
16 oz. Frozen peas & carrots, thawed
1 med. Onion (chopped)
2 cans Cream of Mushroom soup or 1 26 oz. can
1 cup milk
1 cup water
Salt & Pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS:
Cook noodles & drain. Brown Ground Beef / Turkey and onions in skillet and drain, mix soup with milk and water add to noodles, add the meat,
onions, peas & carrots. Mix well and bake in 9 X 13 pan or aluminum
pan 8 X 10 (2¼” deep) at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

LENT SCHEDULE 2013
The weekend of February 16/17 was a
very busy one for our parish. For those
wanting to become Catholic or to finish
receiving there Sacraments and those receiving Confirmation.
Daily Mass with Rosary 20 minutes before Mass: Mass is held Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8:45am.
WELCOME ELECT
On Saturday, February 16, our one Catechumen (Baptism, Confirmation, and
Eucharist), and three candidates
(Confirmation and Eucharist), were presented to Bishop Donald Hanchon at the
Most blessed Sacrament Cathedral. They
are now known as the Elect and have told
Bishop Hanchon they want to be received
into the Catholic faith on Easter Vigil.

CONFIRMED
On Sunday, February 17, our 8th grade
students received the Sacrament of Confirmation. On behalf of the Religious
Education Staff we are so happy to see 28
Newly Confirmed young adults to our
parish of Our Lady of the Angels. Even
though Religious Education still goes on
until the end of April for you, your new
life as an adult in the Church is just beginning. My question to you is: “WHAT
ARE YOU GOING TO DO TO HELP
IN YOUR PARISH?”
I would like to thank so many people
who made your Confirmation a joyous
one.
First many thanks to Bishop Donald
Hanchon, Fr. Dariusz, and Deacon Bill,
for a joyous Mass. Our Lector, Michael
Wallace, our Altar Servers, Ushers, and
Eucharist Ministers, I thank you. Our
joyous celebration couldn’t happen without the joyful music from Nick and his
assistances and the Choir. I would like to
thank Cheryl Antonnicola for the beautiful flowers.
With being new here to Angels, I
would like to thank Maria Valdez for all
her assistance. She is the first face you
see when you come into the Religious Ed.

YEAR OF FAITH
Catechism of the Catholic Church
God, infinitely perfect and blessed in
Himself, in a plan of sheer goodness
freely created man to make him share in
His own blessed life. (Catechism of the
Catholic Church, #1)
Reflection: For this reason, at every
time and in every place. God draws
close to man. He calls man to seek him,
to know him, to love him with all his
strength. He calls together all men,
scattered and divided by sin, into the
unity of his family, the Church. To accomplish this, when the fullness of time
had come. God sent His Son as Redeemer and Savior. In His Son and
through Him, he invites men to become,
in the Holy Spirit, His adopted children
and thus heirs of His blessed life.
So that this call should resound throughout the world, Christ sent forth the apostles He had chosen, commissioning
them to proclaim the Gospel: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, teaching them to observe all that
I have commanded you; and lo, I am
with you always, to the close of the
age.” (Matt. 28:19-20) Strengthened by
this mission, the apostles “went forth
and preached everywhere, while the
Lord worked with them and confirmed
the message by the signs that attended
it.”
Those who with God’s help have welcomed Christ’s call and freely responded to it are urged on by love of
Christ to proclaim the Good News everywhere in the world. This treasure,
received from the apostles, has been
faithfully guarded by their successors.
All Christ’s faithful are called to hand it
on from generation to generation, by
professing the faith, by living it in fraternal sharing and by celebrating it in
liturgy and prayer. (Catechism of the
Catholic Church, 2-4)

on the faith not only to my family, but
to those which I work and live?
Prayer: Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me. Blood of
Christ, inebriate me. Water from the
side of Christ, wash me. Passion of
Christ, strengthen me. O Good Jesus,
hear me. Within your wounds hide me.
Permit me not to be separated from you.
From the wicked foe, defend me. At the
hour of my death, call me and bid me
come to you that with your saints I may
