the sacraments of Baptism, and

rectory office if you are new to the parish.

Our Lady of Refuge Food Pantry
distributes food packages to
needy families on Wednesdays
from 9:30AM to 1:00PM. Please
bring identification. Donations of
cash, non-perishable food items
& clean plastic shopping bags are
always welcome.

waist, short shorts and mini skirts, low cut clothing
that reveals more than what is decent are not
appropriate dress for church, fashionable and cool
as they may be elsewhere. You don’t wear
church clothing to the beach, so please do not
wear beach clothing to church.
Padre Benny hace una invitacion a todos nuestros
parroquianos para participar los lunes a las 7:00 de
la noche para Lunes de Reflexion por medio de
peliculas. Las pelicuas son basadas en hechos de
la vida real, tipo familiares, religiosas y/o en algunos
casos deportivas donde nos enseñan los valores,

escuela nos sirve como teatro para disfrutar de

What Is the RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) 18
years and older is the process by which both unbaptized
adults and those baptized in other faiths become
Catholic or Catholics who have not received
Confirmation or First Holy Communion. English classes
are held Saturday 3:30 pm to 4:50 pm; Spanish RCIA
meet Sunday after the Spanish Mass. Kreyol RCIA as
needed. Please print your information on the tear off for
RCIA classes. We will get in touch with you. Include
the best time for us to call.

REGISTRATION for 2011 -2012 Religious Education
classes begins every Sunday starting Aug. 21, 28, &
September 11, 2011 after all Masses. Weekday- Aug. 29, 30,
31 & Sep. 8, 9, 7:00pm-8:30pm. Saturday Aug. 27 & Sep. 1012:00 to 3:00pm.4th floor of the school.

What You Need To Commit
Catechists need to be regular participants at parish
liturgies, have completed the sacraments of initiation
(Baptism. Confirmation and Eucharist) Children in
our religious education program deserve the
commitment of adults who will make it a priority to
create loving, respectful relations with them on the
journey of faith. In order to do this, a catechist needs
to commit to sessions scheduled from September to
June.
All Catechists/Aides/Volunteers
Every person – must complete the Diocesan
requirements for Child Protection which include
attendance at one of the Virtus training sessions and
submitting to a background check.

We ourselves simply could not conduct the religious
education and sacramental preparation programs
without volunteer catechists. It’s our goal to recruit
at least two catechists for each class.

SUMMER CRUICE

PM to 7:00PM. The boat, “Pink Lady”, will set sail
from Pier 7 located at 2100 Emmons Avenue at
Sheepshead Bay. We will be site seeing Lower
Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island,
The Verrazano Bridge, and Governor’s Island if the
weather permits. Tickets are $30 for children 5-12

Benefit Concert to reinstall the parish’s
Pipe Organ

On November 18 at 7:30 pm Grace Church
Brooklyn Heights has invited Our Lady of Refuge
to have a benefit concert on their pipe organ to
raise money for the repair of the pipe organ at
Our Lady of Refuge. We need to raise another
$65,000 to be able to reinstall our pipe organ.
Stephen Tharp, a world famous organist is
playing the recital. The tickets for the organ
recital are $20 each and the reception tickets are
$30 each. All proceeds benefit the Our Lady of
Refuge Pipe Organ.

The parish's organ was built in 1933 and
installed in the new church. It has 1800 pipes
that range in size from a pencil to a large tree. It
was built by the same company that made the
pipe organ at Saint Patrick's Cathedral. The
organ is the traditional musical instrument of the
Catholic faith, giving “resonance to the fullness
of human sentiments, from joy to sadness, from
praise to lamentation” and “echoing and
expressing all the experiences of human life,” as
Pope Benedict XVI has said.
