Our Annual Renewal of Commitment is this month and
it's a good time to review some of the "Frequently Asked
Questions" from last year's renewal.
"What are you asking of me in this annual renewal of
commitment?" Your Parish is asking that you commit to
sharing your God given gifts of Time, Talent and Treasure;
your Time in prayer and quality experiences with your
family; your Talent in participation in ministry; and your
Treasure in financial support of the Parish.
"You call this an annual commitment; does that mean
we will do this every year?"
Yes, think of this as a New
Year's resolution. Most of us
try to improve our lives at
the beginning of the year; eat
healthier, exercise more, etc.
This is the same thing, except
it is for our spiritual lives. We
are simply asking for a one
year commitment in the areas
of Time, Talent, and Treasure.
“Why do we have to fill out
a form?” Whenever we put
our goals in writing and put
our name to them, we are
more likely to live up to our
commitments. This is true for both New Year's resolutions
and our spiritual goals. Filling out the form increases the
probability that we will meet our commitments.
"I am already involved in sharing my Time, Talent and
Treasure. Should I still fill out the Commitment Card?"
Yes. Completing the card indicates that you will continue
your sharing. You can also add a little to the commitment
by increasing prayer time, participating in a new ministry,
or increasing your weekly offertory.
Commitment Sunday at American Martyrs is September
21-22. Take a small step closer to our God by committing
to five extra minutes of daily private prayer, monthly
participation in one of our ministries or an extra dollar in
the collection. After all it's just for a year.

It’s Back to School Time
Children, teens and young adults are starting a new
school year. They will likely be nervous as they face
new challenges and issues. Fortunately, they will be
accompanied on their journey by teachers.
Unfortunately, adults who face everyday life challenges
-- such as family illness, financial insecurity or job loss -often make their journey alone. They don’t have to.
Stephen Ministers are members of our parish who are
trained to provide confidential, Christian care. Their role
is to accompany those in need on their journey… so they
don’t have to do it alone.

TnT (20s and 30s) is serving at the St. Francis Center
soup kitchen on Saturday, September 7.
The Center (www.sfcla.org) serves impoverished adults
and children in the South Park and Garment District
neighborhoods of downtown Los Angeles.
We will meet in the American Martyrs parking lot at
10:15 am before carpooling to the Center. Volunteers will
help prepare, serve and clean up after lunch.

STUDENTS FOR LIFE AMERICA (SFLA)
As our young people begin or return to high school or college,
please be aware of an important organization dedicated to
educating and equipping pro-life students.
The mission of Students for Life of America (SFLA) is to end
abortion by educating students about the issues of abortion,
euthanasia, and infanticide; identifying pro-life student leaders;
equipping student pro-lifers with the training, skills and
resources to be effective and successful; promoting student
activity to other local, college and national organizations.
Since 2006, Students for Life has helped start over 550 new
student pro-life organizations and trained hundreds of
previously existing student pro-life groups. Since 2006, the
organization has trained tens of thousands of pro-lifers at its
national and regional conferences and one-on-one campus
trainings, and saved the lives of countless preborn children.

Everyone is invited to a new Adult Faith Enrichment ministry
beginning Monday, September 16, 9:00-11:00am, in the
Spirituality Center.
This is an opportunity to deepen our Catholic faith, encounter
Christ, and help each other to live holy lives through
instructional DVD’s, faith sharing, prayer and guest speakers.
We will begin with the very popular ‘Catholicism’ faith
formation program with Fr. Barron.
We will learn what Catholics believe
and why, while being immersed in
the art, architecture, literature, beliefs
and practices of the Catholic tradition.
The ‘Catholicism’ series brings the beauty,
goodness and truth of the Church to life
so that we can better understand and share our faith.

When we pray, we join a steady stream of prayer that began
more than 2,000 years ago. With our world around us constantly
in a state of flux, there is a special grace in knowing there is a
place that is sacred and unchanging, a place where we can go to
be renewed in the love that is ours by way of God’s grace.
We all have gifts differing. There are many pathways to prayer.

The spiritual life is like a journey, an unending one to
eternal life. Along the way we have need of a resting place.
Our resting place is in God through prayer. Our rest is God’s
delight. God’s delight is our blessing.
Please join us in prayer. We begin with a brief reading from one
of the saints or mystics of the Church, followed by two 20 minute
periods of silent prayer, closing with the “Our Father” at 8:30pm.

finding out more about becoming a permanent deacon
in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
