Monterrey, NL, Mexico
by Claudia Gomez Paz
Traditional festivals, impressive industrial development and
religious city. Monterrey has something for everyone!
Monterrey boasts the majesty of being surrounded by tall mountains, where you can enjoy everything from the peace and quiet
of a cozy cabin and views of a waterfall to an extreme adventure
on its rivers, rappelling or doing an endless variety of activities
for the entire family, while also experiencing the vibrancy of a
large city with squares brimming with restaurants.
I FEEL PARTICULARLY PROUD OF “MONTERREY” BECAUSE…
It still retains its traditions, you feel like you’re living in a city with
everything within your reach, you can live comfortably and go from one
side of the city to the other in no time. It is a pretty city with fantastic
views from the hills.
YOU CAN FIND ME SIPPING A COCKTAIL AT…...
Any plaza over Ave. Garza Sada, but the best place right now is San
Agustín because of its scenic views of Chepinque and the Cerro de la
Silla.
YOU CAN FIND ME SHOPPING AT…
San Agustín, Galerías Monterrey and Valle Oriente malls. You can also
consider the outlet malls in San Nicolás and Apodaca.
A WALK THAT I RECOMMEND IN “MONTERREY”…
Paseo Santa Lucia, starting at Macroplaza with a tour through the
museums, perhaps a snack or a meal at the restaurants that feature
traditional, homemade food. Then you reach the Zona de la Fundidora,
where everything from games to bicycle and walking trails can be found,
along with museums and green areas.
Tip: Check the city municipality’s monthly calendar to get an idea of the
main cultural, artistic and sports activities going on.
A CAR DRIVE I RECOMMEND IN “MONTERREY”…
Heading south along the “Carretera Nacional”, you can experience the
Magical Village of Villas de Santiago, La Boca dam and Cola de Caballo waterfall.
This route is filled with lots of things to see: regional restaurants, shops
selling traditional sweets and even stores vending handcrafted decorations and furniture. Further on, following the route towards Montemorelos, Linares and other beautiful little villages are less than an hour away.
Their churches are an emblem of religious belief and the devotion to the
Virgen del Cerro (Hill’s Virgin).
A LOCAL PLACE TO HAVE LUNCH THAT I RECOMMEND…
There are several places in the city where you can try the traditional dish called
“Cabrito Asado” or roasted goat. If you are in Morelos, there is Plaza México,
which has a wide variety and dishes to suit all tastes.
Tip: To sample the more traditional dishes, I recommend: El Rubio, La Siberia and Los
Tacos del Güero. If you are on Boulevard Acapulco: Restaurant Santa Barbara,
Mariscos Don Arturo, La Anacua and Tacos Laredo.
AN IDEAL PLACE FOR HAVING DINNER THAT I RECOMMEND…
Even though it depends on your tastes, I prefer the variety available at restaurant
franchises like Italiannis, Olive Garden, Super Salads, Chilis, Applebees, Carl’s
Junior and Manhattans. For a more local taste, I recommend La Caldera, El Sierra
Madre, Tacos Leal, El Rey del Cabrito, El Fundidora and El Papalote.
A PROMINENT POINT OR HISTORICAL SITE IN “MONTERREY”…
The entire area near Parque Fundidora, because it is the image of the industrial city
with its vestiges from the past and present. Another important area to visit is the
Faro del Comercio monument because of its location and impressive structure.
WHAT KIND OF FAMILY ACTIVITIES CAN YOU FIND IN “MONTERREY”?
Walks around the Parque Fundidora, Plaza Sésamo, Parque España, Bosque
Mágico, Kidzania, and visits to museums or the Alfa Planetarium.
Tip: In the Zona de La Fundidora, a new amusement park called La Fundidora has
just been opened, which now joins the auditoriums, lakes, rivers, museums and the
huge wheel of fortune. Some activities that might be fun for the family for which
Monterrey is known are: the Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO), the Museum
of Mexican History, the Museum of the Palacio de Gobierno, the Museum of the
Northwest, the Natural History Museum, the Glass Museum, the Regional Museum
of the Palacio de Gobierno, the Regional Museum of Monterrey, the Alfa Planetarium Museum, the Railway Museum and the Museum of Science and Technology.
NEW YORK HAS ITS PIZZA, BUT “MONTERREY” HAS…
Its roasted Cabrito without question!
Tip: For beer lovers I recommend Indio beer.
IS THERE ANY TOUR THAT IS A “MUST-SEE”?
A tour of Paseo Santa Lucia heading towards the Carretera Nacional, which can
include a visit to the nearby dams.
WHAT IS A GOOD SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR VISITORS?
If you are in Monterrey definitely go to the CINTERMEX in the Parque La Fundidora.
You can also find detailed information on the Fundidora zone at http://www.parquefundidora.org/.
