“I guarantee you will wish your high school career could begin again at SEM!”

There is a great deal of energy and
enthusiasm at SEM as we begin
2015. Our academic calendar is now
a trimester system, so for the first time
in a number of years, we do not return
from winter break to exams. Both students and faculty are happy to be right in the middle of lots
of great reading, writing, science labs, and artistic projects.
It is the heart of the school year, and everyone is engaged.
We finished the fall term with a wonderful theater production of the play Radium Girls. The powerful play details
the historical events that lead to changes in labor safety
standards (see page 5). The production reminded me of the
determination it takes to tackle difficult situations and make
positive change. At SEM our students are gaining the educational background and the character development that will
help them become leaders of the next generation.
The winter and spring will be a busy time at SEM. Nearly
half of our senior class had already gained admission to college
before winter break from early applications and rolling admission decisions. Our German exchange students have departed,
and five girls from Normandy, France will spend eight weeks
living and studying at SEM this winter. We also have our own
language class trips to Spain, France, and Montreal.
This vibrant learning community with more than 30
faculty members and 220 students is an exciting place to be.
Gwen Baggs Ito ’81 wrote a masterful eight page history
of SEM for the fall, 2014 issue of Western New York
Heritage Magazine with Miss L. Gertrude Angell’s portrait on
the cover. Gwen’s story is an invaluable contribution to the
school. (The magazine also has a Twentieth Century Club story.)
Issues are available by calling (716) 893-4011. Move quickly!
“Those who hold SEM and the Twentieth Century Club near
and dear to their hearts have made it a particularly good seller for us,” said Douglas W. DeCroix, the publisher. “We have
been thrilled by the positive response to this issue and we are
extremely grateful for the opportunity to bring these stories to
life in our pages.”

SEM: Excellent Subject
We debuted our new video “Picture Yourself Here” as a
sponsorship for Downton Abbey on WNED Buffalo/Toronto public TV. Our 30-second spot is before and after each
episode all season long. The short video is part of a project
that will also result in 60-second and three-minute versions.
The students, faculty, and staff lent support, time, talent,
and space to the production which began with filming last
spring. Class of 2014 graduation began the project which
culminated with Jane Gold ’15 (SGA president) spending
hours on Bidwell Parkway taking (and retaking) that selfie and Abby Hopkins ’16 (SGA vice president) handling
the voiceover like a professional. We are proud and we are
more than able - abounding with talent, enthusiasm...and a
resemblance to a certain English abbey. #GOSEM!

his year, SEM has 46 students
living in our residences. The
girls have chosen to come from
SEM from Bermuda, China,
France, Germany, Japan, South
Korea and Taiwan. The four residences
next door to the school form an intimate
SEM campus: the Niscah and Lipke
Houses are on Bidwell Parkway and the
Oishei and Wendt Houses are on Potomac
Avenue. Ms. Douglass’ house is also on
Bidwell, and Larkin Field completes our
campus just a short walk away.
Each house has a “parent,” who is also a
faculty member. Lisa Pritchard ‘99 (English
teacher) at Lipke House, Dr. Sara
Montgomery (science teacher) at
Niscah House, Catherine Knauss ‘08
(administrative assistant) at Wendt House,
Eva Cunningham and Kacie Mills (coaches
and health teachers) at Oishei House.

#SEMGivingWeek
SEM Giving Week was a huge success,
thanks to SEM students and parents,
faculty, and staff!
E
ach year the Community Service
Board organizes a giving week
that goes above and beyond SEM’s
already remarkable service commitment
to our city. On Monday, December 8
empty boxes appeared on the stage in
chapel. By Friday, December 15 they
were overflowing. At Mrs. Hopkins’
direction, students formed a human
chain to move the donations into a
waiting van.
In the thankful SEM spirit, again this
year parents contributed holiday breads
and cookies, for the faculty. Thanks, parents
and Parent Association!

REVEL!
The Hanging of the Greens
started the holiday season at SEM
on Dec. 5th. Most of our traditions
including Giving Week, Bazaar, Ugly
Sweater Day, Bûche de Noël competition,
Café, and finally on Dec. 19th, Revel,
were shared with not only our
returning young almumae but our
German residential students and
Spanish exchange students
before they left SEM for home.

The fall play was a dramatization
of the true story of the women
who were lethally sickened by the
luminous, irradiated paint they
painstakingly applied to watch
dials (so they’d glow), and the
landmark labor law that resulted
from their fight for healthcare.

Walking the halls of SEM that morning, one could almost feel the pride
encircling each student as she buzzed
with chatter. SEM’s varsity field
hockey team had made it to the New
York State Association of Independent
Schools (NYSAIS) playoff game - a
first in SEM history. SEM vs Nichols,
at Nichols was going to be played
that afternoon. SEM had won against
Nichols in a scrimmage just the week
before. All were hopeful, from teacher
to staffer to student. Alumnae planned
to come to the game.
“All the team wants to do is make
our school proud,” said Madison
Frank, a senior.
Rounding the corner of Nottingham onto Amherst, one found a field
of SEM Red versus Nichols Green.
SEM ran fast and ran hard - it was a
blur of white jerseys and knee socks.
Sticks clacked against each other,
push-passing and driving the ball
down the field.
SEM fans were wild. Erica Luciano
‘15 and Erin Hanratty ‘15 led SEM
fans in a chant of, OO AHH YOU
WISH YOU WENT TO BUFF SEM.
The cheers never ended, and Red
undoubtedly dominated Green on the
sidelines.
“We were in the huddle with Mrs.
Marlette, and I remember glancing
over at our side of the bleachers,”
Madison said. “Never had I seen so
many people from our school at a
game. It made me proud to be a part
of SEM and even more determined to
make them proud of us.”
Suspense. Impatience. Hope - the
shared feelings of every person on that
field supporting SEM that day. As the
second half of the game got closer and
closer to zero minutes on the clock,
you could almost see the pain through
the players’ goggles. They had worked
hard, they had pushed themselves beyond limits of physical strength and exhaustion, and they were not giving up.
But bang. One more goal by Nichols.
SEM senior Jane Gold was whacked
by a Nichols player. The field, including the sidelines took a knee. Getting
up, the crowd cheered wildly as Gold
walked across and off the field, okay.
The cheers amped up. The game
counted down. The buzzer hit zero.
Final score was 0-3 for Nichols.
But. SEM did not walk away quietly,
heads low. SEM did not just stand there,
but rather we sang. The girls on the
sidelines formed a long line and began to
loudly sing the SEM anthem. “We could
hear them loud and clear,” said Madison.
“We knew they were proud of us, and
we were proud of us for coming that far,
and for me, well that was pretty much all
I needed to end my season right.”

Just Add Water
Glenna Leous and Amanda Gareis ‘14
reconstitute the swim team.
The last time SEM had swimming Red-Tailed
Hawks was the 2010 season. This year with swim
interest brimming high, we got the birds back
into the pool. Amanda Gareis ’14 came to SEM
as a senior from Holy Angels where she’d been
a swimmer but last year SEM had no team for
her. This fall she returned as an alum to coach
with Mrs. Leous, who hadn’t given up on her
swim team dream. Senior Alex Pfiefer captained
the team of three seniors, one junior, and eight
sophomores—some who’d never swum on a
team before, some who had, and some who were
already proven winners. The reconstitution of
SEM swim was complete.

SEM?Quest
The Stumped, The Stomping, and The Generous
November 1, 2014, our 2nd annual SEM?Quest was a hilarious, exhilarating evening with games of talent, knowledge
or luck staffed by “friends of SEM” and quiz master Dennis
George; a silent auction which included the dearest sister
rescue puppies with SEM red accessories, and beauty, sports,
food, art, and home items; food from Salvatore’s; and finally
a contra dance in the study hall. (Some would call it a square
dance. Hoedown. Barn dance.) Played by the Esteemed
Clams from Rochester and called by Joe Kwiatkowski from
Fredonia - parents and friends
whirled for hours. Joe and the
Clams were thrilled and admitted
surprise at the SEM enthusiasm.
They’ve already offered to be here
next year! #GOSEM!
