Thought for the Pinecrest Team: A little Story... to show that Attitude and not
aptitude determines ones altitude.
A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said," Lord, I would like to
know what Heaven and Hell are like.
The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in.
In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of
stew which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water. The people sitting around the table were thin
and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles and each found it
possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they
could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and
suffering. The Lord said, "You have seen Hell.”
They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large
round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped with
the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The
holy man said, "I don't understand".
"It is simple said the Lord, "it requires only one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other. While the
greedy think only of themselves."
Moral: It is a person’s attitude that makes a place of work, a heaven or hell.
Success and happiness are all about effective teamwork…

Flag Day at Pinecrest – The retirement of our “Old Glory” and its replacement
←The New Flag is raised.
The Old Flag is

I am the flag that stands
for the greatest nation on
earth. I am no more than
what you believe me to
be, and I am all that you
believe I can be. I am
what you make me and
nothing more. As long as
men cherish liberty more than life itself, I shall continue to be the enduring banner of the United States
of America. Look at her with renewed allegiance, honor her, respect her, and defend her.

The Gift
--- Pinecrest’s Auxiliary News ---
Shop is open 8-4 weekdays.
There is a flowered suggestion box on the first floor by the nurses’ station for ideas on how the Auxiliary could
spend its money. So if you have any ideas let us know. Recent projects include: buying new folding tables, fish
tank and accessories, LCD TV, and re-upholstering a lift-chair, as well as supporting on-going projects (Birthday
Club, Entertainment, and Lost item replacement fund). If you have left-over garage sale items (not clothes) we
could use them in the gift shop.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” --Gandhi
Your donations are our means to an end; that is, supplementing Pinecrest’s programs by contributing to areas of
the residents’ quality of life where Pinecrest may not have the resources. Suggestions for donations: We always
have a need for “like new” items such as, jewelry, especially clip-on earrings and long necklaces, stuffed animals
and even monetary donations.
We will meet on the first Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m. in the Visitor’s Waiting Room
Thursday, July 2nd, is the next meeting. If you cannot attend the next meeting but are interested, please contact
Shirley at (906) 639-2486.

Summer finally arrived and now we can play outdoors…
A Tree Planting at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility
in Remembrance of the Olivier LaFond Family of Lake Field, MI
Olivier Frederick Joseph LaFond entered Pinecrest T.B. Sanitarium in 1931, leaving behind a wife and 10
children. Olivier passed away at Pinecrest in 1941.
One of Olivier’s daughters, Gertrude Lucille
(LaFond) Helmes entered Pinecrest Sanitarium in
1936, recovered and lived to the age of 85. Lester
Gordon LaFond, a son entered Pinecrest Sanitarium
in 1939 and passed away in 1939. In 1961 Pinecrest
converted from a T.B. Sanitarium to Medical Care
Facility (Skilled Care Nursing Home). Most recently,
Raymond Howard LaFond, twin brother to
Reynolds (Renny) pictured to the left, entered
Pinecrest MCF in 2008 and passed away in 2009. As
you can see the LaFond family has historic ties to
Pinecrest and wanted to create a memorial. So this
spring some of the descendants of Olivier got
together to plant a dwarf honey crisp apple tree on
the campus of Pinecrest.
Third from the right is Renny LaFond, last surviving child of Patriarch Olivier. Surrounding Renney are his son
Rodney LaFond, Mary (LaFond), Davey, Dominique, & Alaina Vandermissen of Bark River; granddaughters
include Karen (LaFond) Maki, Cathy (LaFond) & Scott Kennicott; and Tamara LaFond; and nieces Phyllis French
and Jeannie Nepper. Also pictured is Liz Decateur.
Pinecrest Volunteer(s) of the Month – Angela Molgaard & Company
Just like the superstar rock groups, our Tuesday
and Friday Happy Hour entertainment has a lead
singer (master mind and leader of the band) Angela. I bet you have met her and her family
before. You know; they’re the group of singers
that actually goes into the audience and personally
greets each one of us and gives us a big smile.
They also keep the act fresh by bringing in guests,
like puppies and puppeteers.
Congratulations, Angela, on being selected
Pinecrest’s Volunteer of the Month for July!

Pinecrest Resident of the Month – Robert Savage
Bob Savage, long time Powers resident, was born and
grew up in Schaffer. After school Bob enlisted into the
Army and served for 7 years, 8 months, and 21 days in
Germany as an Army Drill Instructor. When he returned
from Germany, he worked as a section foreman for the
Soo Line Railroad out of the station house in
Hermansville. He was responsible for maintaining and
repairing the track up and down the line, as far east as
Sault Sainte Marie. Later, Bob started and ran the Savage
Construction business in the local area. He had his own
gravel pit and heavy equipment. His company built
roads, dug house and commercial foundations; and built
three complete homes. Bob was a hard worker and would
work sun-up to sun-down. One of his favorite stops was
the Redwood Restaurant in Powers. He earned a private
pilot’s license and built his own air strip in Wilson. In its hay-day, Bob’s work crew was
composed of family members and a couple of part-time laborers. He also had a dumptruck, a backhoe, front loader and a Cat 6 bulldozer. The Cat was Bob’s favorite. He was a
stickler on getting the grading just right. Bob has 12 children and 22 grandchildren. In
the winter time he would go into the woods and cut fire wood to feed his self-made wood
heating system. Congratulations on being selected as Pinecrest’s Resident of the Month
for July!
