and
engineering. PWSZ in Pila has a
modern base for didactics, well
equipped laboratories and workshops.
Our priority is to ensure a high
level of education. The academic
staff helps students in gaining
knowledge and abilities necessary for
graduates of first cycle of higher
education. Skills which will help them
in their second cycle studies,
professional and privet life.
Best proof for a high quality of
the teaching process are the
achievements of our graduates during
Masters degree studies in renowned
universities of Poznan and other
cities.
One of our most important
concerns is to surround students with
care and guarantee them help and
scholarship support, as well, as good
living conditions in the hostel of
PWSZ in Pila.
We support student initiatives,
recreation and science interests.
PWSZ in Pila creates conditions for
1
cultural development and academic
sports competition. We are pleased
with the active involvement of
students in the management process
of PWSZ in Piła and are proud of their
didactical, scientific, sports and
cultural success. It is important to us
that students of our Alma Mater feel
at home within its walls and want to
be its co-hosts. Students sensitivity
for fate of another human being,
their readiness, to assist those, more

PIŁA
Piła is the capital of Piła County and
the largest city in northern part of
Wielkopolska with about 75 000
inhabitants.
It is located on the banks of Gwda
River and is famous for its green
areas, parks and nearby dense
forests, with numerous lakes adding
to its beauty.
Piła is surrounded by wonderful
countryside
and
breathtaking,
unspoiled nature, which offers active
forms of entertainment. Therefore,
one of the cities promoting slogans is
“Piła – the green city”.
To the North the City borders with
Kuźnik National Reserve and less than
30 km further in that direction you
will find Diabli Skok National Reserve.
History
enthusiasts
might
be
interested in the fact that within the
7
city borders can be found the remains
of the Pomeranian Line (also known
as the Pomeranian Point), The
Pomeranian Point is a line of
fortifications constructed in the years
1932-35 and used during the II World
War. With the biggest German
fortifications of WW II within the
reach of 50 km from the city.
Todays Piła is an important road and
railway
hub,
located
at
the
intersection of two main lines Poznań - Szczecinek and Bydgoszcz Krzyz. The geographical location is a
further value of the city, with 3
provinces capitals within the reach of
100 km. Bydgoszcz – KuyavianPomeranian, Poznań – Wielkopolska,
Gorzów Wielkopolski – Lubusz, and
two country capitals: Warsaw and
Berlin within the Reach of 360 km.
PIŁA
History:
The first records of Pila date back to
the 14th century when these lands
where within the borders of
Pomeranian Dukes, and later the
Teutonic Knights. In 1368 Pila was
incorporated by the Polish king,
Casimir the Great.
The name of the town (“pila” in
Polish means “saw”) came from the
sawmill that operated here in the
14th century.
The first map found, with Piła
marked on it, is dated to the year
1449In 1512 or 1513 the town was
granted city rights. Throughout most
of its life Pila was known as
Schneidemühl, , as the province has
belonged to Germany.
Piła has started developing intensely
during the second half of the 19th
century after the opening of a
railway connection with Bydgoszcz.
Soon after Piła underwent a process
of industrialization. In the second
decade of the 20th century the
production of the Albatros aircrafts
was started. During World War II
the Germans began to use the facility
for work on jet planes
Piła became a Polish town after
World War II. Unfortunately during
the warfare most of the city has been
destroyed. The reason for that was
the strategic role that Piła had
as a Fortress City in the Pomeranian
Rampart, a defense line of the Hitler
army. Thus today’s Piła is mostly a
modern city with rare signs of the
cities material heritage.
8
Piła
Piła of today
Today Piła is undergoing many
changes which you can see in
different areas of life.
Every year brings significant growth
of residential, commercial and
industrial areas. In the last two
decades the economical base of the
city has changed from military and
railroad oriented to a modern multi
enterprise labor market.
Starting with the new millennium
a new goal has been set for Piła – it
was to become the Northern
Wielkopolska center of culture and
higher education. A big step in this
direction was the founding of
Stanisław Staszic State School of
Vocational Education in our city.
The
cities
higher
education
institutions together with the city
museums, artist associations and
initiatives of local community are
influencing the changes in our
everyday life. The Associations of
Friends of the Science Festival is an
example
of
good
cooperation
between local government, PWSZ in
9
Pila, other institutions in our region
and the local community. You can say
that the Science Festival has been
great contribution in making kids,
teens and adults of our region more
aware of the influence that science
has in our daily life. Besides the
above mentioned we have many
other frequent fairs and festivals
bound with art, culture, business or
science.
For those who are interested in a rich
night life our city can offer pub’s and
discos suited for almost every musoc
taste from modern music, pop music,
so called oldies, to hard rock.

PWSZ in Piła has been created
in the year 2000 as part of the
government’s plan to help young
people living far away from academic
11
centers in achieving higher
education. A second, but still
very important aim, was to
increase the practical sphere
of education. Changing the
didactic process so that it
won’t
only
focus
on
theoretical education, but
also vocational training in
companies, local government and
social institutions.
After completing three years
of study the student will receive the
professional title of Licencjat (the
equivalent of Bachelor's degree), and
after four years of study in a
technical area, the professional title
of Inżynier (Engineer).
The educational basis
The Stanisław Staszic PWSZ in.

The PWSZ in Pila has a modern
gymnasium with volleyball, handball,
basketball, and tennis courts as well
as a indoor running track. There are
also a rehabilitation room, a gym,
a fitness room, a sauna and an
expositions room. Recently the gym
has obtained new outdoor courts for
football and basketball.
With the help of EU found we
have reconstructed one of our
workshops into a modern and
interactive conference center with
more than 460 seats.
Student activities
An important part of every
Higher Education Institution is its
academic society. That is why we pay
special attention to the life of our
students and academic staff trying to
ensure the best possible relations
between those groups. A key role in
the
interactions
between
the
employees of administrations and the
students is the fact that, a big part of
our staff consists of PWSZ in Pila
graduates.
There are special grants for
students
with
exceptional
achievements ant social grants for
those in need for financial aid.
12
Stanisław Staszic State School
Also
students
associations
are
entitled to apply for grants that will
help in their activities. Finally since
2010 our students can apply for
Erasmus grants and take part of their
studies or go for vocational training
abroad.
We
mentioned
student
associations just a moment ago. In
the academic year 2010/2011 there
were 15 associations with almost 300
participating students. Their fields of
interest covered amongst others
tourism, history, political science,
machine
construction,
electrical
engineering, photography and music.
Some of those students did a few
13
quite daring things like, the now
quite famous, Mr. Piotr Bucik, who
went biking through Mongolia and
Caucasus (below you can see
a picture form a post trip
exhibitions).
Another renowned group of
students is the Students Photography
Association, who have organize many
exhibitions and photography courses
for students and the open public. But
to finish here would be like ending
the sorry right after it has begun.
Students activity has led to many
publications and conferences, it was
also affiliated with charity initiatives,
and first aid courses for children and

in Piła ceremonies, it has also won a
bronze medal in the “XXXIII
International Choir Festival” in
Olomunc (Czech Republic), and two
bronze medals in the “XXXIV

Students organizations are
very important to the PWSZ in Piła
and so is our Academic Choir under
the lead of a magnificent Conductor
Mr. Karol Urbanek, who led the choir
to great achievements. The choir has
been founded in the year 2003 and
since then it has been a part of PWSZ
Olomunc (Czech Republic). Since the
year 2007 the choir has also been
performing concerts with Mr. Adrian
Mackiewicz and also The Classic
Orchestra of Piła. This cooperation
has led to a tour in the USA (NY and
CT) in the year 2010. During the tour
the choir has also recorded an album.

Science and culture
Since its founding PWSZ in Piła
was always aiming to be an important
part of Northern Wielkopolska bout in
regard to science and culture.
One of the ways to reach that
goal was the founding the “Galeria na
Poddaszu” (Rooftop Gallery) where
students, local and nation known
artist come to present their work.
A different form of scientific
and cultural activity is the yearly
Science Festival with its different
topic and attractions.
15
The festival includes photographic
and literary contests that end with
exhibitions and a publication of the
best works in form a book.
International conferences and
visits of prominent guests who are
part
of
the
government
or
parliament, as well, as renowned
scientists and artists also influence
the position of PWSZ in Piła in the
community of Northern Wielkopolska.
