The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph ‐ December 27, 2015
W
e celebrate Christmas with our families. We never celebrate Christmas alone.
On Christmas day, we, fathers always travel to New Jersey to celebrate with our
confriars there.
When we speak about the Holy Family, we may tend to sentimentalize it. We
look at the crib and say, after all they are figures made of plaster and clay and not persons. But
in reality, they are not different from us. They were holy, but they were also human.
The story of the Holy
Family is the story
of our own families. It is
the story of a
teenage mother who
conceived a child
before marriage. It is the
story of an anxious
father who plans to
divorce. It is the
story of a family forced
to be refugees,
living as immigrants in
the land on which
their ancestors were
slaves. It is the
story of anxious parents
who searched for
their missing child. It is the story of a young widow. It is the story of a mother who, with
helplessness and unimaginable sorrow, watched her son dying on a cross.
At least some of these experiences are ours.
In the crib, we see Blessed Mother looking down to see the baby Jesus the beginning of a new
life. At the foot of the cross we will find her looking up to see her son dying, the end of a life.
May of these experiences of the holy family are our own. And what made them holy is their
complete trust in God.
We do not find Joseph arguing with Mary over conception outside married life. Instead, Joseph
prays to God and asks God’s revelation. We do not find Joseph and Mary blaming each other
when they couldn’t find the child Jesus on their way back from the temple.
The Holy Family stands beside parents anxious about their children, worrying for their welfare.
They walk with immigrants and refugees separated from their loved ones. They walk with
teenage mothers and single parents. They console the parent of the prisoner, the outcast, the
bullied, the scorned. And they offer solace and compassion to any mother or father grieving
over the loss of a child. They prayed. They trusted. They hoped. And in all that, they found
peace and strength.
Family is made of relations. Husband and wife, parents and children, sons and daughters, etc.
but the success of family life, most of all, consists in a strong relation of the family with God.
This year’s celebration of the Holy Family has a special meaning, as we are reminded of the
true meaning of married life by the recent government plan to redefine marriage.
On this feast of the Holy Family, let us thank God for the gift of the Holy Family as the
example and model for our families. Let us witness to the true meaning of married life by living
our marital vows.
yeso y arcilla y no personas.
tristeza
inimaginable, vio a
su hijo morir en una
cruz.
Por lo menos
experiencias son las
algunas de estas
nuestras.
En la cuna, vemos a
mirando hacia abajo
madres adolescentes y madres solteras.
viviendo siempre nuestros votos matrimoniales.
