THORNBURY IN BLOOM
by SweetWilliam
What's the Score?
of you may not believe it but I do have a fan club, admittedly it is
lrather small but size is not everything and my number one fan (the only
tQOME
one if the truth were to be told) has requested me to conjure up a few words of
wisdom at this important stage of Thornbury in Bloom's campaign for 2011.
we have a most daunting programme ahead of us as we try to emulate our
resounding success of 2009 when we won the best in the south west and the
gold award and best in class in the national Britain in Bloom contest. so yet
again we face the judges, once in July and again in August. We need to keep
our standards up during the four-week period between the two judging dates
and we need all our supporters to maintain their enthusiasm to keep things
going for that vital period. Everyone can help by doing simple things tike
keeping your front gardens neat and tidy, take your rubbish home, volunteer to
do a little watering of flower beds etc. and we will be rewarded with success.
we have been entering the Britain in Bloom competition for twenty years and
have had a considerable number of awards including six gold awards, one
silver award, three cups and numerous certificates. our success is due to all
the hard work put in by our supporters who have provided physical effort and
time and organising skills, and not forgetting business organisations, clubs and
private individuals who have provided financial support. our sincere thanks go
to everyone who has given time or money to aid our aim of making the score:

BUSWOMAN'S HOLIDAYI Last summer Joyce lrwin met Philip Wilby (St Mary's
Director of Music) when she brought a choir from Syracuse, New York, to sing at Bristol
Cathedral for
a week. Philip helped her prepare for the Sunday service at
the
Cathedral, where Philip's wife Wendy serves as Canon Precentor. ln conversation at
tea, Joyce told Philip that her husband, Robert Smith, had not been able to come on the
trip, but that he would love to come back to England. As a chaplain and professor of
philosophy and religion at Colgate University, Hamilton, New York, he had spent
sabbaticals in Oxford and had brought students for study tours in England and
Scotland. Philip then reported that he and Wendy were to be taking a study leave in
2011 and this would be an opportunity for Joyce to take his place at the organ in
Thornbury. This seemed an ideal solution for all involved and Joyce saw it as an
occasion to retire from her church position in Syracuse to spend more time in historical
research. As a church historian, she combines her interest in music with
her
background in Gernran Lutheranism to focus on the theology of music in 17th and 18th
century Germany. While in Great Britain she will attend two conferences related to her
research and the couple will spend three weeks in Germany upon leaving Thornbury at
the end of September. Both Joyce and Bob are very eager to get to know Thornbury
and its residents.
IMPORTANT DATE FOR ALL PRIMARY AGED CHILDREN Sunday 25 September,
4-5.30pm, Castle School. "Doug (Duggie Dug Dug) Horley in Concert". One-and-a-half
hours of funky music, puppets, tricks, thrills and fun. Tickets cost f4 per primary school
aged child. (All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult adults and
younger siblings free.) Organised and subsidised by St Mary's and St Paul's Churches,

to outlets around the South

Festival, Eisteddfod and other children's events run by TAF; assist with promotional
stalls at eg. street fairs, Thornbury Carnival. Benefits for Friends membership would be
other street fairs); deliver TAF posters/brochures
priority booking at Arts Festival events (subject to certain conditions), circulation of a
regular newsletter keeping the Friends updated regarding activities planned by the
Group and reporting to and from the TAF committee via TAF committee members.

STAR-SPANGLED GLOUCESTER
ln Gloucester Cathedral is buried John Stafford-Smith, who was born in the city in
1750. He is the musician who composed the tune for the American National Anthem,
Ihe Sfar-Spangled Banner. The music had been wriften for The Anachreonic Society,
a group of musicians and composers whose members had included such illustrious
names as Johann Sebastian Bach and Henry Purcell. The words had been written by
Francis Scott Key and it was he who, in 1814, chose the tune to accompany his words.

SOME EIGHTS FORTHE EIGHTH MONTH
Whether based on the Greek or Latin languages, a number of words used in
the English language begin with oct- when there is some reference to the
number eight. An eight-sided shape is called an octagon, because with its
eight sides it has eight angles. Another well-known oct- word is octopus - the
sea creature with eight feet attached to its body by its eight legs. . But there are
several words beginning with oct- which one would rarely come across. An
octaeterid is an eight-year period in the ancient Greek calendar, an octarchy is
government by eight rulers and octodactyl means "eight-fingered", An eighttoothed creature is an octodentate, while octoceratous indicates that a creature
has eight horns. To be octophthalmous is to be eight-eyed, literature which is
octoglot is written in eight languages, whereas octogamy shows that a man
has married eight wives. All such oct- words can easily be slipped into one's
everyday conversation, if one really wants to impress, or bore one's listeners.
Why not give them a try? Of course, the name of our tenth month, October,
seems to break all the rules, but long, long ago when it got its name it was the
eighth month.

THE GRAND MINUET BALL (Part
Three)
by Andrew Sherriff
IANE had gone to an Eighteenth Century Ball in Bath. Suddenly her dance
rJ partner had been challenged to a duel and she had found herself taken
back in time to the early Nineteenth Century. Her lover had been killed in a
duel by her husband.
Jane withdrew into herself, although memories of herself as Jane were just
figments of a bad dream. She was Lady Emma, ostracised by polite society for
her affaire but she was happy to excluded. Her coachman told her that Sir
Anthony had died honourably and bravely. He also had a quick death for
which Lady Emma was thankful.
The years went by painfully slowly. She was a rich widow. Her loathed
husband had gone to France to fight in Lord Wellington's army. Miraculously
he had survived many battles against Napoleon, only to die, ironically, in a
duel.
Lady Emma was coughing, the never ending cough of consumption. She
looked at her ever faithful Rose, an old woman now, as she was too. Rose
had never married and had lived the hard life of a domestic servant. She was
more than a Servant, as much as a mistress and servant could be friends
together. Lady Emma would have been happy to see her married.
She endured another spasm, bringing up more blood as Rose looked on
helplessly. Fighting for breath, she knew she was going. The world was
receding and she was not sorry... ... ..
"Madam, Madam. Please don't die."
The vision of Rose faded as Lady Emma slipped away from her unhappy
world. Then to her surprise her vision focussed itself again. Panic stricken she
looked up.
"Rose, Rose. lt's you. Please don't leave me."
"lt's alright. You must have fainted."
She looked at the concerned faces all crowded round her. Slowly she was
helped to her feet.
Back at their table, Jane was aware of a splitting headache and a strange
desire to cough. She found it difficult to breath but the room gradually
focussed itself.
"l had a strange dream," she said, addressing the floor.
"How could you have? You were only out for a minute."
There was a pause as Sarah tried to appraise the situation.
"Why did you call me Rose?"
"Because you were."
Sarah looked puzzled, slightly annoyed and worried.
Listen Jane. I hope you'll be alright. I'm in the next performance dance with
Peter so I must go now but I'll be straight back." Sarah smiled quickly but all
Jane saw was the engagement ring.
A feeling of great peace came over her as at last faithful Rose was to have a
husband. What was she thinking? Sarah was Sarah, not Rose, or was she?
ln a confused state Jane sat out the rest of the Ball revelling in Sarah's and
Peter's romance. Eventually the Ball was over and Sarah helped her out of her
22
'
costume. A stream of people left the.Ball and Jane found herself by the main
door's clutching Norma's costume.
"How are you feeling now?" She looked up to find a man speaking to her.
"Yes, Yes thank you," she replied uncertainly.
"You're surg?"
This time she looked straight
at him, her heart missing a beat with
recognition.
.1t...
lt was you I was dancing with. Yes," she replied firmly. "l
didn't
recognise you out of your costume."
"lt's always the way. We all look so different when we're dressed up. I think,
Emma..."
"What!" She stared at him and his eyes became more familiar, very familiar...
"l think we were interrupted last time." He knew and somehow, in some way
he had returned.
"My darling Jane, or should I say Lady Emma. I shall take you home."
Most people had left and the impatient security guard was desperate to lock
up. Sarah swept past, arm in arm with Peter.
"Bye Jane, bye Ben."
"Bye Peter, bye Rose er Sarah." Jane snuggled up to Ben.
"So you're Ben. I think I prefer the name Sir Anthony." They giggled together
as they were shooed out by the guard. n

NICE CUP OF TEA
"Oh Mabel, let's go into that caf6 and have a horrible cup of tea." "Why don't
you call in one day, and I'll make you a disgusting cup of tea." "They say you
can get an indifferent cup of tea in that new tea shop." "l always like to have a
rubbish, yucky, tasteless, lukewarm cup of tea at about four-o'clock." These
are some of the things we are never likely to hear or say. For reasons
unknown - at least to this writer - every cup of tea offered, considered or
contemplated is "nice". Tea doesn't always turn out to be "nice", but that is the
stated intention, by both the tea-maker and the tea drinker. Whether one is
using a tea bag in an old mug, or expensive "posh" tea in an expensive "posh"
teapot and tea cup, the intention is surely to make a "nice" cup of tea. Many
years ago a popular song extolled the virtues of "A Nice Cup of Tea" yes,
pop songs really did have thoughtful, serious, literate and "nice" words then.
-
I like a nice cup of tea in the morning,
Just to start the day, you see;
And at half-past eleven, my idea of heaven
ls a nice cup of tea.
I like a nice cup of tea with my dinner,
And a nice cup of tea with my tea;
And when it's time for bed
There's a lot to be said
For a nice cup of tea.
Oh well, I'lljust put the kettle on, and make
a nice mug of hot chocolate.

RED DEER TO tOS ANGETES
you
JO explain the above title I should inform that my start point (Red
I Deer) was a small town in Alberta, Canada, near to where I was stationed
for two years with the Royal Air Force during World War Two. Our unit was
part of the Commonwealth Air Training Scheme for the training of aircrew.
Very few aircrew were trained in the UK due to wartime conditions, eg.
blackouts, bombing, etc.
I was at the ripe old age of 20 and was serving with the Royal Air Force as a
skilled aero engineer; I digress! I will write in the singular although in fact there
were two of us, and we had agreed to forego any leave for one year to make
this journey. One more deviation and we will be off. I regret I am unable to
illustrate this "write-up", as all my photographs and pictures were lost when
was grounded and hospitalised after a very bad sortie over Cologne; but that is
I
another story!
First was a visit to the offices of "American Railroads" in Red Deer, my
nearest town. Here I purchased tickets for a return journey to Los Angeles,
plus all the relevant forms for the journey. These included an RAF form of
authority to enable me to leave Canada, a temporary visa to enter the USA,
copies of RAF identity cards and so on. lt took over a month to acquire all the
paperwork. Now to the trip!
I boarded the train at Red Deer and we proceeded south to Calgary, then
south-west to the town of Nelson. lt was here we took on water for the engine.
The next leg of our journey was a long one and we did not stop again until we
reached Blaine in Washington State. lt is here that everything happens!
At the border crossing they wanted to see my visa, my RAF pass, rail tickets;
if I had an official piece of paper they wanted to see it. Before leaving camp
had to stitch "Great Britain" flashes at the top of my uniform jacket sleeves. I
have to admit I almost became an attraction here as the Americans saw very
few RAF personnel, and they all wanted to shake hands, with the greeting
"Guess you're over here from the Old Country." From the border control point
was advised of my next move. I changed platforms to the American sector and
awaited my train. lt arrived with a lengthy blast on its whistle, cow-bell ringing,

a special she was: five coaches and observation coach - a
wonderful sight, very streamlined, silver in colour with a blue flash running the
whole train's length. We the passengers now had a six-hour journey to LA in
complete luxury - fully air-conditioned, quiet, very fast. I find it very difficult
now to recall the whole trip, but a few places we passed through - Seattle,
Portland in Oregon, Klamath Falls, Sacramento in California. Finally LA Grand
Central Station. Compared to the UK this station was out of this world. I regret
that at this stage of my life I can only offer a rough detail of the station - it has
to be seen to be believed. lt was colossal! How do I begin?
The fully-enclosed station was pedestrianised, trains and platforms were in
separate enclosures. What can I say? The whole area would I guess be a full
square half-mile. The pedestrianised area was parquet flooring, marble pillars,

shops on all three sides, beautiful lighting - it had to be seen to be believed.
This is one place where I wish I still had my photographs words will never be
able to describe the size and beauty.
After a quick coffee - no good looking for tea - I made my way to one of the
many exits signed "For city cabs"; there were many more exits stating where
they would lead you. once outside it was utter chaos, people milling aiound in
all directions. There must have been thirty or forty cabs'parked i-n an open
compound with a line of cabs slowly moving in a snaking line, and people
rushed down thb line of taxis I just waited my turn and up came a cab. I
boarded and asked the driver for 1464 Munson Avenue. The cabbie checked
in his street guide, slipped into gear and we were away. I had always thought
that London was bad enough for street traffic, but central LA welll As far a! I
was concerned all the traffic was on the wrong side of the road (left-hand
drive). There were multi-coloured buses (single deck), and the constant
cacophony of motor horns with the odd siren thrown in for good measure.
Traffic lights were strung across the intersections, and without any concern
whatsoever, the cabbie slid back the privacy window and said, "you over from
the uK?" I replied with "sure" (it did not sound very American). Then the
driver said "so you're a real English Air Force guy." Then from me another
"Sure" and the cabbie said "Well dang me ain't that iumpin."
I must have been in the cab around twenty minutes, when it lurched to a halt,
the driver said "1464" and opened my door from the inside. I enquired what
the fare was, to be greeted with "Have this one on me fella and give 'em hell
over there." - and he was gone!

HATE
by Jim Meadowcroft
1937 - "Oi! You, kid! Get off my patch!',
I looked round on hearing the shout which appeared to come from behind a
hedge forming the street boundary to a house, No. 6 Hampden Road,
s.outhcourt in Aylesbury. I was walking along the pavement towards the only
shop and Post otfice on the estate at that time. He came out, ugly and brutal
looking- "lt's my pavement and my side of the road," he continued, giving me a
push. "Get over the other side right now and don't come on my sioe again or
I'll belt you, really I will."
"But ... !"
His size and age compared to mine brooked no argument so
I
meekly
crossed over, fuming inside at the injustice of this world. Adjacent to the shop
was a Baptist chapel; both buildings fronted Penn Road, a road at right angles
to Hampden Road. Albert, for that was the bully's name, lived at number 6l an
end house. The houses at that point were separated from the Baptist chapel,
Post office and shop frontage by an extensive green space. penn Road was
named after william Penn who founded pennsylvania and Hampden Road
after John Hampden who was a cousin of oliver cromwell and opposed the
"Ship Money" tax of Charles I helping to bring about the Civil War.
A week or so later I walked carefully past Albert's house on the opposite side
for I didn't want another confrontation. After I had passed his'irontage, I
crossed over the road and began to walk diagonally across the grass space
towards the next road. lt was the shortest way to get to the town.

he shouted from behind the hedge, ,'l said

Don't you understand you litfle runt?',
I did not reply. I was dumbfounded and swore revenge. I now hated him as
only a child can hate. I hated him completely and without reasoning at first. I
had been brought up on the william books by Richmal compton and asked
myself what William would have done in these circumstances. I decided that a
bucket of whitewash over Albert was not remotely adequate for the shame,
humiliation and frightening experience that this hooligan had perpetrated on
me. I pondered for several days and discussed the incident with my friend red
Ralph who was a few years later to die of tuberculosis of the lungs. Eventually
I came upon what we felt was a marvellous idea. we did noi'hing very oao

stealing apples from orchards was no longer punished by banishment to the
colonies but nevertheless a sound scolding and the fact that your parents

such an eventuality.
"l know," I said finally, "if we continue to scrump apples, break windows and
have street fights like we do all the summer, we are bound to be found by the
coppers sometime. The first thing that they do is ask for your name and
address. well, let's give Albert's name and address instead, then we will go on
home and his parents will get a call from the coppers and possibly his titner
willgive him a beating."

I rehearsed Albert's name and address for weeks until I had it perfect and
almost spontaneous. "Albert Reading,6'Hampden Road, southcourt.,' ,'Albert
Reading, 6 Hampden Road, southcourt." lwas almostdizzy with excitement.
lwas ready for revenge.
1939 - Ted and I had grown a litfle older and he was a litfle more short of
9r::11 but we still cycted about the town, raced atong oxford Road past the
Drill Hall, although he was forced to walk up whitehili to get to the junk yard
where we purchased old motor-cycle dynamos, solely to get the increoioty
strong magnets. At the top he stopped to regain his breath-. we then raced
along the flat section until we came to the complex junction of whitehill,
Bicester Road, Buckingham Road and two more roads iteaming in from oui
right, the names of which escape me for the moment. lt was a wioe junction
with perfect visibility fonavard down Buckingham Road and to the right lowards
the other two road!. The only obstructei vision was BicesterR6ad and, of
course, if we turned left into it we were not on the side of the oncoming traffic,
therefore we should be safe from approaching cars that should be-on the
opposite side of the road. so we totally ignored the Halt sign clearly displayed
before the junction. Rounding the corner at speed, we came across two
policemen just waiting to catch a motorist ignoring the Halt sign. They were
out of luck, but two sprats like us were worth catching so they stoppeo us and
guess what the first question was, notebook in hand.
"stopl stop!" one of the policemen shouted waving his hands about like a
Keystone cop of earlier years. Then there followed the inevitable question.
"Name and adoress of you both please. your name firsfl" He pointed at me
and I answered immediately.
"Jim Meadowcroft, 22 Lee Road, Southcourt."
I nearly bit my tongue and Ted kicked my
shin. I had forgotten all my
practice two years earlier with the name of my hated enemy. With the

JUMP UP AND FIRE WALK!
Sunday 25 September at Old Down Country Park
THE Charity Fire Walk will be in aid of Jump Up. JUMP UP is a charity
dedicated to supporting children and young people with arthritis and
related rheumatic conditions in the south west of England and South Wales.
JUMP UP is part of the Paediatric Rheumatology Service in the Bristol Royal
Hospital for Children. This service provides a dedicated, specialist team to
I
help children and their families through this difficult time, with information,
advice and specialist care and treatment.
No child should have to suffer pain if there is a way to prevent
it. Thanks to
new medication, improved treatment and extensive research, the team at the
hospital are making a real difference to our young patients' lives, helping them
to live a happy and active childhood and to face adulthood with confidence.
The event is being organised by a local mum. My son has suffered from
arthritis since he was 18 months old. He has now just turned six and he and
our family have received the best care, treatment and support possible by
Bristol Children's Hospital Rheumatology Team. The charity has recently relaunched and we are making every effort to give something back by taking part
and organising fundraising events across the south west. I am looking for
teams and individuals who wish to challenge themselves in this awesome
experience and achieve what appears to be the impossible. Jump Up and
register to take part todayl Registration is f25 deposit (deductible from final
sponsorship total if 8175+ is raised. Minimum sponsorship target €150). To
register please contact Lindsey Hall and fonvard your name, address and
contact telephone number via email: [email protected]. Tel. 855764.
Thanks for jumping up and doing something amazing for charity today. o

-A D'SASTER N AUGUST
The name of the ltalian town pompeii is known the world over as
the place
where one of the most significant disasters occurred, long ago.
The volcano
Mount Vesuvius is not many mires to the south of the cily o"f
Naples, on the
south-west coast of ltaty. lt was on 24 August in the y6"r. no
79 that the
volcano erupted violently. There had been some minor earth
tremors for some
days, and it seems dogs, cats and livestock had seemeo ijitateo
ln the early
afternoon of the 24th an enormous cloud of pumice, asn inJ
rocks exploded
high into tne atino-stltere - then tnis nejan to setfle back to the ground.
About
six

.miles away was the town of
scalding-hot blanket on the town's streets. Numerous roti< were
killed by ra[ind
rocks or asphyxiation, but because the ash continued falling for
eighi hours]
the sheer weight caused the crushing of houses. people rishpO.out

into the su.rrounding countryside, buthany could not escape.
shorfly before
midnight, the situation changed a flow oi excessivety neateo
molten pumice
and rock rolled down the mountainside at terrific speeo, engulfing the
areai
beneath. Then a final blast from the volcano settled ine oestrlction-ot pompeii
and nearby Herculaneum and Stabiae.
