Editorial
Today ia grand final day for many sides, hope that every
team left nothing in the shed. For others there is nothing
but disappointment not because they lost but because the
weather last weekend prevented them from completing
their final. Its cruel and unfair but we can’t control nature
and life isn’t fair. It’s disappointing but not the end of the
world.

It’s time for players to look back at their seasons and see if
the goals they set themselves pre season have been met.
Identify where you need to improve to take you to the next
level and once you have had a well deserved break to plan
how you are going to achieve it.

U15’s Nationals
Things to do
during the Off
Season
The U15’s challenge for the title was on the cards
The first game WA vs Tasmania saw WA win comfortably with
Brendan McPhee top scoring with 61 and Conor Smith getting his
half century. Deon Billington picked up 3 for 22.
Here is a small check list
Versus NSW Magenta another comfortable win with Damien
Burrage top scoring with 57. Game 3 yet another dominant
performance chasing 153 to win WA did it in the 40th over.
1. Rest
2. Take your mind off cricket
WA was 50 odd runs short vs Queensland with Connor Chadwick
being the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 28. Heading into the semi
finals WA were up against NSW Green, unfortunately WA lost by 7
wickets and met Queensland for third / fourth playoff.
WA indeed finished the tournament 3rd defeating Queensland with
an over to spare. Great effort. From this competition 3 WA players
were named in the Australian U16 squad, Connor Smith, Damien
Burrage and Jordan Clark. Congratulations to all of you.

Melville Take Out
Going Viral Isn’t
Always a Good Thing Colts Grand Final
Social Media is a mixed bag and sometimes its best to not vent
your thoughts for everyone to see.
It doesn’t take long for something to be posted on social media to
reach thousands and the message is then out there, no retractions
and yes despite most youngsters beliefs there are consequences.
Social media can portray your club in a positive light but one wrong
post or tweet can do more damage than you can imagine. Stupid
comments can be of a descriminatory, harrassment or bullying
nature all of which are not acceptable.
What a lot of youngsters don’t realise is that there are
consequences to their actions. They seem to think that because
you are making these comments and statements from behind
their computer in the safety of their homes that nothing is going to
happen.... WRONG you are accounatable for your actions.
Melville are top of the “young guns”.
Playing against Midland Guildford, Melville
proved to strong and took out the trophy. Posting
a relatively low score of 133, Melville’s bowlers,
Bryce Jackson in particular, talking 4 for 31
managed to get Midland Guildford all out for 126
wining by 7 runs.
Toyota Country
Cup Finals
The finals were played at Breckler earlier this
month.
Its up to clubs to educate their members on the etiquette of using
social media when the club is concerned. The club can not control
what the individuals ultimately do or say but at least they have been
warned about the consequences of bringing the club, its members
and the game into disrepute.
The 4 teams that contested this years finals were
Peel, Upper Great Southern, Esperance and Port
Hedland.
The good things are almost never remembered but the bad things
linger forever. Lets think about who and what will be affected by
what we comment, tweet or post before making that statement. The
club and the game come before any individual, so before putting
your views out into cyber space, think about what damage you will
cause.
Peel proved to be to good going undefeated
throughout the tournament and beating Upper
Great Southern in the final by 14 runs.
Last years champs Bunbury and Districts were
knocked out by Peel, who go in as favourites.
Ben Wright was the winner of the Brad Hogg
Medal.
Things to Consider in a

One Day Final
First grade sides Rockingham Mandurah took on Claremont
Nedlands at Fletcher.
Both teams had some fire power with the bat, Craig Simmons for
Rockingham Mandurah and Travis Birt for Claremont Nedlands
and with close to 500 runs scored it was a great game which saw
Claremont Nedlands crowned 1 Day champions.
Having won the toss and elected to bat Rockingham Mandurah
scored 247 for 8 with Craig Simmons on form with a quick fire 55
from 30 balls.
In reply Travis Birt opened the batting with a great opening
partnership with Jake Whiteaker. Birt reached his century with a
massive 6, giving the Tigers the platform they needed to go on and
with the flag with 5 overs to spare.
Push Them Out
As young players and athletes there has been a lot of
discussion over the use of weights.... whats wrong with push
ups?
I am personally not against young players doing some work with
weights, I am not talking about 6 year olds but players in their mid
teens, and using light weights with high reps. Then again how many
players are members of gyms and how many coaches take weights
to training?
During my team coaching days once a week we would do half
an hour to an hour of strength and conditioning, we are not only
responsible to make them better cricketers but better athletes.
The one exercise that has survived the test of time is the Push Up.
Its not difficult to do but is the one exercise that is most probably
done badly and we as coaches let it slide. Any exercise that is not
done properly is not targeting the right muscles. How many have
seen the youngsters with their back sides in the air or hips glued to
the ground with little flex in the elbows? That really isn’t achieving
much.
A standard push up (and there are a number of variations) is to have
your hands firmly planted on the ground shoulder width apart, body
kept straight and vertical to the ground and on your toes. When
lowering yourself to the ground bend from the elbows bringing your
shoulders down to your hands whilst keeping your body rigid, then
raise to starting position.
By using body weight all athletes should be able to complete 25
push ups in a rep. If they cant then they need to work towards this.

Evaluating Players
- Batting
Loads of clubs are doing or have done trials
for next season what do selectors look for.
Firstly batsmen only get 8 - 10 minutes to
impress so there are some aspects like focus,
concentration, work ethic and patience that
can’t really be evaluated but you can tick off the
following boxes.
Listen to Selectors - Selectors will ask and offer
advice, take the time to listen and then reply to
their requests.
Setup - Selectors first impressions are based on
a players Setup, your stance is your first chance
to show them that the basics are in place
Decision Making - Although you have a small
window to impress showing the skill to play
or leave the right ball will be looked upon
favourably.
Ability to play off front and back foot Selectors like to see that players are not limited
in terms of array of shots. Being able to play the
short stuff off the back foot and getting forward
to the full balls will help.
Pressure - how an individual is handling the
situation and pressure of trials will give selectors
an idea of how they will cope out in the middle.
Timing - is the player middling the ball.
Confidence - how happy is the player with their
own game, do they know their strengths and
play to them.
Have Fun - you go out their to showcase what
you have to offer very much like a saleman
selling his wares. Be the best you can be
and then its in the selectors hands. Enjoy the
opportunity to pit your skills against the best in
your age group.

Willetton Seal Club
Championship
After many years Willetton claim the the Club championship.
The club championship is the accumulation of points across the
grades and Willetton pipped Perth and Joondalup to claim the title.
With a strong showing this season Willetton has 3 teams in finals
and a real chance of a premiership. With 2 age group teams taking
out the top spot Willetton are certainly developing more than a
successful season but a winning culture throughout the club.

Improve Your
Speed
One thing that some are not born with is
speed but fortunately it is something we can
improve on.
Some are natrual athletes, but you can become
an athlete. Unfortunately the correlation between
weight and speed is an obvious one and all
players need to drop a few kilos to get their
speed up.
Things that assist with speed improvement
is technique. We can all run in a manner of
speaking but not many use their arms correctly
and just this simple change can believe it or
not increase your speed. Your posture too is
important.
Then you have power. To improve that
explosiveness you need to strengthen the legs,
through squats (including single leg) and then
resisted sprinting. This can be as simple as
band resistance or the use of a parachute or if
available sled towing (you could also use an old
tyre). This is in your control so as soon as you
are ready time your 100m sprint and then after
your improvement program time it again.

Plank Re Visited
I am currently upskilling and came across an article that made me think about the way I used to ask players to do the
plank. I used to ask players to compete in terms of who could last the longest in the plank position but what people
are saying now is do it right and for a short period of time 20 second spurts.
Squeeze the Glutes tight
Legs together and rigid, as
straight as an arrow as they say.
Tense the stomach muscles as if
you were about to be punched.
Keep pushing the elbows apart

Female A Grade Final
Melville vs Midland Guildford yet again but this time in the 50
over version of the game at the WACA.
Chasing their fifth consecutive title Melville went in as favourites.
They won the toss and elected to bat. Mathilda Carmichael (67)
and Emma Biss (51) laid a foundation in what proved to be a high
scoring affair.
However an outstanding captains innings from Chloe Piparo not
out 115 and well backed up by Bhavi Devchand (62) saw Midland
Guildford grab the silver ware with an over to spare.
The female game has progressed so much and it was an exciting
and enthralling game. A great spectacle and a credit to all players
that took part.
“An appeaser is one
who feeds a crocodile
hoping it will eat him
last”
Winston Churchill
What to Do?
Grand Final, you win the toss.... then what?
Personally, 90% of the time bat first. Putting runs
on the board in a final is important. It also allows
you to have some idea of what you need to do to
win the game.
When don’t you bat first? When your final is a
one day affair and the morning is overcast, the
wicket has a tinge of green and you can make
that ball hoop.
When on a two day final, when one of your top
bowlers is available day one but not day two.
Finals are strange affairs, the word seems to
add this huge pressure but in fact it is just an
opportunity to put all your practice into action.

Is this the Answer
to the No Ball?
After a study the suggested answer is to have
an umpire whilst training in the nets.
How many teams during a net session have the
coach or assistant standing in as an umpire?
Not many I think but this is what some are
suggesting is the answer to getting players to
stop bowling no balls.
If you think about what we all say, i.e. make it as
close to playing conditions as possible so it is
not so outrageous to think that adding someone
in the same position as the umpire during nets
sessions would simulate what players will
encounter on match day.
What the study basically says is that mentally the
presence of someone standing between you and
the stumps alters how you approach the crease.
So something for you coaches to make a mental
note of for next season is to stand at the stumps
during net sessions and see if this makes a
difference to your players and your extras in the
scoreboard.
