Trees Tagged on Lynn Campus - Environmental Technology
Professor Barbara Heath and her HRT 230 Horticulture students, have
placed tree tags on 10 Lynn campus trees. The trees are representative
of an urban canopy and were chosen for traits which allow the trees to
thrive in a city setting. Each tree tag gives the common name and
botanical name of the tree and has a QR code embedded on the tag.
When scanned by a smart phone, the QR codes link to mobile web
pages which give more information about each tree including its carbon
sequestration. The tagged trees enable a person to take a "self-guided"
walking tour of our campus and to learn about the importance of urban
trees in mitigating atmospheric pollution.
Professor Heath intends to make the "tree tour" part of her curriculum.
Funding for the tree tags came from a National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Climate Stewards Education Project
grant awarded to the college through NOAA Climate Steward Mentor
Barbara Ikalainen's participation in the NOAA Climate Stewards Education Program.

Arlene Hanson and Breanna Edwards Earn Industry GoldStandard Career Coaching Credential - Arlene Hanson, right,
and Breanna Edwards, left, (Career Exploration Counselors) recently
completed the Certified Professional Career Coach program earning
the CPCC credential, enhancing their professional expertise and
contributions to the career coaching industry. To earn the CPCC,
candidates must complete a comprehensive training/coaching
program for career management and job search coaching in today’s
employment market. As Career Counselors at North Shore
Community College, Arlene and Breanna work with students to
assist them in career choices and planning. Career Counseling can
make a difference in the success of a student by helping them
identify career paths that may be a good fit. By identifying a career path early on, students can save
time, money and frustration and increase their chances of success.

Blackboard Learn for All Courses – Summer 2015
Over the past year, Academic Technology (AT) and Information Systems (IS) has been working on the
implementation of the latest version of Blackboard Learn and the migration away from ANGEL.
Starting this summer, all courses (online, hybrid, and face-to-face) will be delivered in Blackboard Learn.
ITD will be offering training for faculty as well as open labs throughout the summer. Our next series of
workshops will take place the week of June 22nd and July 6th. To view the complete schedule of
workshop sessions (with descriptions) and to RSVP, please visit this web site: http://goo.gl/UIkoUk.
ITD is in the process of migrating over content from spring 2015 ANGEL course shells into Blackboard
Learn. Once migrated, you will see them listed in the My Courses module on the Blackboard Learn My
Home page within the corresponding spring 2015 course sites. If there is anything else you need
migrated out of ANGEL, please contact us at [email protected].
ITD has also created several resources to aid faculty in the transition from ANGEL to Blackboard Learn.



Course Migration from ANGEL to Blackboard Learn: A handout that outlines how course shells and
everything that they contain are migrated over from ANGEL and displayed in Blackboard Learn.

From ANGEL to Blackboard Learn: A handy reference sheet that lists the common tasks in ANGEL
and how to perform them in Blackboard Learn.

Blackboard Learn Course Checklist: A quick reference checklist of course areas that should be
looked at and updated if necessary, especially as it relates to the migration from ANGEL to
Blackboard Learn.

encouraged to create teams with co-workers, family or friends to run or walk in honor or memory of a
loved one or friend affected by cancer.
Take the Lake was created and is dedicated to Janice (Mignosa) Frye of Wakefield who lost her battle
with cancer in 1999. Her family created the run/walk to pay tribute to her and the organizations that help
the countless individuals and families afflicted by this insidious disease. All proceeds benefit the New
England Community for Cancer Survivorship (NECCS), a nonprofit, cancer-inclusive community which
advocates for cancer survivors and caregivers by raising awareness of issues, making connections and
building a strong survivorship community.
To register to participate go to www.TaketheLake5K.com, or www.neccs.org. Questions can also be
addressed to Linda Brantley, President, NECCS Board of Directors, ext 5506 or [email protected]
and/or donations will be gratefully accepted online to NECCS Cancer Survivors. Thank you in advance
for your consideration and support.
Run to Home Base - We will be participating in this year's Run

Proceeds from this event go to support The Home Base Program,
which treats veterans with Traumatic Brain injury and PTSD. Our
Veterans Services here at NSCC has an excellent relationship with
Home Base and we even have an intern there this semester!!
Here is the link to our Team Page, where you can register

I really hope we can get your support!!! Please feel free to share this with anybody you think would be
interested in joining our team.
--Kristine Babcock, Veteran’s Services Specialist, [email protected]
P.S. I was able to get Home Base to reduce the fundraising amount to $750.00 for runners.
If you decide to register on our team as a runner, once you do, send me an email and they will reduce
the amount from the back end at Home Base.

Handsome “Ed” guarding the pottery.
This year, I will be riding in my 16th Pan Mass Challenge on August 1st and 2nd. I have committed to raise
$4500 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute by riding 170 miles from Wellesley to Provincetown. The PMC
now donates 100% of rider-raised funds directly to the cause.
To date the PMC has raised
$455,000,000! Even though the ride is in August, October 1 st is the fundraising deadline and this is why I
was able to move the date this year.
The “Bowl-A-Rama” is an inexpensive way for you to help support cancer research and also take home a
handmade bowl, or other piece of pottery, as our way of thanking you for your support. The cost of $20
will include soup, salad, dessert, one hand-made piece of pottery of your choice and the satisfaction that
you are helping fight cancer. Additional pieces may be purchased. We will be raffling off many other
handcrafted items as well as having a 50/50 raffle. Winning raffle prize tickets will be pulled at 2:00 p.m.
You do not have to be present to win. Feel free to stop by for a quick visit or stay the duration. If you
can’t make it but would like to sponsor my ride, please go to the link http://www.pmc.org/egifts/AO0005
to make your tax deductible pledge. You can also donate by writing a check out to PMC/Jimmy Fund and
mailing it to me at 21 Swampscott Ave., Peabody, MA 01960.
If you would like to know more about the Pan Mass Challenge and why I ride, please visit the website
www.pmc.org. Under PROFILES you can search my name.
Your support is so very important. Thank you for your kindness.
Sincerely,
--Anne O’Shea, Professor, Math Department, [email protected]

By the time you read this I will be retiring in a few days. While
I'm excited about finally having the time to do all those things
I've dreamed about for years, (like having the summer off,
traveling and hanging with my grandchildren) I find I’m a little
nostalgic for the good old days here at NSCC. Way back when
we were housed in multiple buildings in Beverly, before there
was a Danvers Campus or Lynn Campus.
My, my … we have seen many changes over the years! We have
moved and grown, from buildings to BANNER (we kicked and screamed … remember?),
social media to online classes, and we are still growing!
I have enjoyed being a part of the NSCC community. I’ve met many students, staff and
faculty over the years and have forged some great friendships.
I want to express my thanks to each of you who have been such a
great support to me during my tenure at North Shore Community
College. I shall remember all of you well and the good times we
shared.
I am looking forward to my retirement … with bells on!!
Thank you!
