PE Update
Summer 2015
What a hectic term it has been in the PE department as staff worked tirelessly with the Btec Level 2 and 3 students to
complete their coursework and give additional examination preparation sessions for the GCSE and A level students. We
look forward to their results in August.
Sainsbury’s Vouchers
The PE department are so grateful for all of the Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers that
have been collected this year. We received over 3000 vouchers and have purchased
the following equipment.
2 buckets of much needed tennis balls after 3 large tubs have been lost this summer
on roofs and in bushes! A full size cricket bat to help year 10 and 11 pupils recreate
England’s hopeful victory this summer in the Ashes and a set of Lacrosse sticks and
balls for 14 players.
BTEC Level 2 and GCSE News:
9E GCSE PE: Year 9 students have covered a range of practical activities including netball, football/leadership and
rounders and have developed their skills, knowledge and use of strategies and tactics in game-play. In theory lessons students have learnt about the participant as an individual, the physical and mental demands of performance, the cardiorespiratory systems and the differences between leisure and recreation. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching my Year 9
GCSE group this year and I wish them every success next year with Mr Wade.
10C GCSE PE: Year 10 GCSE PE students have continued to make good progress this year. In theory lessons students have
learnt about diet and nutrition, the musculo-skeletal system, and the factors underpinning and affecting health and fitness.
Students have also continued to develop and enhance their practical skills and were assessed in circuit training, indoor
rowing, football/leadership, netball and badminton. The majority of students have increased their practical scores and
have achieved at least a C grade in the practical unit to date. With further development of the practical section, along with
a good score in the written coursework, students should be aiming to achieve at least a B grade in this aspect of the
course. Students should enhance their skills, knowledge and use of tactics/strategies in PE lessons, and should also attend
extra-curricular sports clubs and/or sports clubs outside of school. For students wishing to be assessed in an activity not
offered at school, such as martial arts or skiing, then video footage will be required. Further information will be sent out
about this is due course. The Year 10 students have the potential to achieve some very good marks, and with continued
hard work and commitment, further progress will ensue.
Football
Year 9 boys did the school proud in the Maidstone Cup Final against National Champions Oakwood Park holding out to the last
fifteen minutes. The final score was 4-1 with Fraser Daniels getting the consolation goal.
The year 9 football team have done phenomenally well this year, making it through to the fourth round of the Kent cup and also
making it to the final of the league cup beating Maidstone Boys Grammar school in the league table, unfortunately the Year 9 boys
lost 4-1 in the cup final to Oakwood Park Grammar school who are also the National Champions, Year 9 MNS were the only team
to score against OPGS in Kent which was a massive achievement.
Since the beginning of the year the whole team have matured and built a great relationship between them all, which has had a
massive impact on their physical and technical ability to flourish throughout the games in the season, below is a brief description
of each playing in the team and how they have come on this year:
Tom Clarkson: Throughout the year Tom has been a solid Goalkeeper for the team, conceding minimal goals. His kicking has
been his biggest improvement this season creating many different ways in which the team can play whether it being playing short
or hitting the space just behind the oppositions back line.
Harry Abrahamson: Harry started the year quite nervous when we told him he was to be playing left back, being a natural right
back. This meant everything was on the wrong side for him but throughout the year his left foot has grown much stronger and he
has done a great job for the team going up and down the pitch.
Fraser Daniels: Using his height and pace to his advantage Fraser has controlled the back line this year with Harry Butler and
Harry Lewis, Fraser loves to make big challenges, also scoring a cracking header in the league final at the Gallagher Stadium, which
I still think was a fluke.
Harry Butler: Harry has been slightly injury prone this year due to being a fearless player, it doesn’t matter how big or tall a
player is he will still go straight through them, for his age I still believe Harry is one of the best CB in Kent, with his great technical
and physical ability. Also his support play moving up the pitch.
Harry Lewis: Harry is a very similar player to Butler, they both have the same somatotype and abilities as a player, being best
friends they have a great relationship at the back and are always looking out for each other, which as a manger is very reassuring.
Alex Freeman: Alex is one of the quieter players in the team, as a right back he uses his pace and physical ability to his advantage, creating some great chances for the team out wide and always getting stuck in, back in defence.
Jake Milson: Jake is one of the jokers of the pack, this year he has really progressed his abilities as a player. He always finds the
simple pass and is also the leading goal scorer of the team, which no one knows how? He is a great asset to the team and always
plays with a smile on his face.
Football
George Young: A natural talent, George has led the team this year as Captain and has been a great role model not only to Maplesden Noakes but also to other schools around Kent. His ability to read the game and pick out the correct pass is top class and make the
ball stick to his feet when dribbling around players is probably his biggest attribute. He motivates the team when behind and praises
when ahead, it has been a great pleasure to have him as captain.
Stan Forecast: This year Stan has been one of the biggest assets to the team, being known to play like Hazard and Sanchez, Stan is
not the biggest of players but his balance and centre of gravity is one of his biggest attributes the way that he keeps the ball and ducks
in and around players and gets into the smallest of gaps to create chances is class, next year I would like Stan just to lift his head when
playing and moving with the ball and I’m sure he will be unstoppable.
Josh Butchers: This year Josh has been a very important player with the way the team play, being one of if not the quickest players
in the team he has created many chances for the team. He put in a phenomenal effort against Oakwood in the league final, playing as
a striker instead of a winger and it now goes to show that he can be played in multiple positions, which will be a great addition for the
team next year.
Courtenay Jones: Courtenay at the beginning of the year was quite a quiet and independent person, but as the year has progressed
he has really come out of his shell and his abilities as a player have really flourished, scoring some cracking goals, one being a lob
against Oakwood in the league fixture, which was probably the most important point of the season to get us to the league final.
Charlie Hutchison: Charlie is a little terrier and a very passionate player, always causing trouble in midfield and putting himself
about, as one of the smaller players in the team he is a very technical and physical player, creating a lot of chances for the team.
Regan Bowden: Regan this year has been a big influence to the team, with his abilities to find the perfect passes, and support play.
He really stood out in the league final along with the others and proved to everyone in Kent that he is a very talented player.
Kian Taylor: Kian is not the biggest of players but he plays to his strengths as a striker, setting the ball back and spinning off into
space, he has bagged himself a couple of goals this season which I’m sure he will be proud of.
Archie Adams: I think Archie has been one of the players who surprised us most this year with his ability to read the game and
make successful challenges, he keeps the ball well and always plays it simply and supports play when going forward.
Golf:
‘On Friday 26th June Maplesden Noakes entered the Kent Schools’ Team Championship at Littlestone Golf
course. We were represented by George Young, Jordan Britton and James Whyte.
It was a windy day out on the coast but some excellent golf was played by all three students and 94 points
were gained. This wasn’t enough to win however a special mention for George Young who scored the second best gross score of the day! George will now compete in the under 16 National Championships to be
held at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club, Leicestershire on 19th and 20th July. Good luck George!!!’
Cricket
Under 13’s lost 72-38 vs Aylesford.
Sport Technicians
Five sport technicians have been assisting the PE department with daily duties including
general housekeeping and stock taking.
The famous 5 are Kieran Ball, Alfie Sculley, Mathew Deacon, Ryley Cooper-Frewer and
Pavel Gogov.
Well done and thank you for your hard work!
Rounders
Rounders club this year has been very popular with a regular group of students attending practice every week. Huge
improvements have been made across each of the age groups and we have had a mixture of successes throughout the
season.
Year 7 – District Champions
Maplesden Noakes jointly hosted the Year 7 District
tournament with MGGS and a number of teams
from Maidstone competed for the title. Maplesden
was drawn against St Simon Stock and Invicta
Grammar School in the pool stages. The pool
games were very closely fought and after a bit of a
slow start, and some superb coaching from Emma
Rundle and Mukta Ale, we narrowly lost against St
Simon Stock 4-4½ but beat Invicta Grammar 4-3½ . All three schools won and lost
one game, ending in a draw on the number of points scored in the pool, but on
count-back Maplesden scored more rounders and headed up the pool in first place.
We were then drawn against MGGS, who were placed first in their pool, for the final.
Maplesden fielded first and made some fantastic catches and great stumps to keep the MGGS rounder total to a minimum. Again, fantastic coaching from Emma Rundle greatly assisted with the movement of the field to backup the
stumps and support one another during game play. Maplesden were then chasing 3½ rounders when they went into
bat. MGGS fielded well, but some wayward bowls gave us a slight advantage. We batted well and took our chances to
score and in the dying seconds of the game scored half a rounder to win 4-3½ . Huge congratulations should go to the
following students who took part:
Lauren Andrew, Kerry Batt, Chloe Parris, Eva Shaw, Maice Gladdish, Fay Waters, Amelia Hannam, Vyara Stoilova,
Poppy Grattan Wilkinson and Millie Spencer
Year 8
A combined Year 7 & 8 Maplesden team travelled to St Simon Stock for the Year 8 District tournament. Maplesden
faced a strong Cornwallis team in the first game and despite working hard, lost 3-7. A short break then allowed us to
discuss tactics and strategies for improvement, and when we faced Valley Park and St Simon Stock we looked like a
completely different team. Maplesden fielded superbly, backing up play and supporting one another consistently well
in both games, keeping the batting totals low. When in bat the students hit some cracking shots and ran well to score
some fantastic rounders. We drew 4½ -4½ against Valley Park and beat St Simon Stock by one rounder, with the final
score being 4-3. Our final game against Aylesford was a very closely fought match and after some brilliant fielding and
batting from both teams we narrowly lost by half a rounder (1½ - 2). Maplesden were placed 3rd overall and should be
really proud of their improvements over the course of the tournament. Congratulations should go to the students
listed below and a credit should be given to Harriet Combes for both her performance and outstanding leadership
skills as captain – well done!
Harriet Combes, Ellie Pereira, Beth Prime, Leia Semadeni, Rosie Williamson, Lauren Andrew, Poppy Grattan Wilkinson,
Amelia Hannah and Fay Waters.
Year 9 and 10
Maplesden travelled to Invicta Grammar School for the Year 9/10 District tournament. Maplesden were placed in a
tough draw against Wrotham, Aylesford and Invicta Grammar School. The first game against Wrotham we narrowly
lost by half a rounder (3½ - 4), but in the second game the well drilled Invicta team beat us convincingly 6½ - 1½, and
in the final game we drew with Valley Park 4-4.
Overall the team made improvements throughout the course of the tournament and there was some excellent
individual talent on display. Particular mention should go to Megan Selby, Emma Rundle, Summer Hanlon and
Sharleen Lemee for their performance strengths and tactical understanding in game play.
Kent Schools Championships
Eighteen students were selected by the school to represent Maidstone at the Kent Schools Athletics Championship at the Julie Rose
Stadium on Saturday 13th June. Well done to those students who gave up their Saturday.

Maidstone Schools Athletic Championships
Thirty seven students and four staff braved operation stack for the annual athletics Championship at the Julie Rose Stadium, Ashford.
There was eleven schools in the girls competition and nine in the boys. Unfortunately due to operation stack our coach driver had to
leave before the end so we were unable to gain points in some of the 800m races and the relays. As a school we could have finished
higher up the rankings.

Sport Leaders—New Year 7 Induction Day
The Year 10 Sports Leaders took on the responsibility for organizing the afternoon activities for the new Year 7 students
on the two induction days. The Sports Leaders were set the task of working in pairs and designing a fun activity to engage
students for 15 minutes at a time. The students were extremely creative and devised a range of activities including a tug
of war, various obstacle courses, problem solving and competitive sporting challenges. All students were friendly,
thoroughly organised and demonstrated excellent leadership skills, resulting in all of the students listed below passing the
Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership. A special mention should also go to the Year 8 and 9 students who stepped in to support the Sports Leaders with this event.
