Shining New (Era
n its quest for excellence, Albany State University has entered into a Shining
New Era. It has developed into an academically, athletically, and socially
renowned institution of higher education.
Academically, the institution has received an outstanding reputation in grad­
uating some of the finest students in its nursing, education, and natural sciences
departments. The school of education has graduated more students than it has
ever in the past ten years. Most of the graduates have jobs even before they
complete their educations. The school of nursing accepts nothing but the best from
its students. Approximately thirty students graduate from the school each year.
Albany State University is also renowned for graduating a high number of
natural science majors who go on to medical school. When it comes to academics,
ASU shines above the rest.
Athletically, Albany State University's Athletic Department trains some of the
finest athletes. The Rams football team has been the SIAC champions for the
past four years. Coach Hamton Smith was coach of the year for 1996. Antonio
Leroy finished his career with 5,152 yards, the fourth in NCAA history.
Socially, ASU has evolved into an institution that has some of the most out­
standing students who are members in the various clubs and organizations and
who participate in various activities. Albany State did much to prepare for the
torch that would pass through the campus on its way to Atlanta, Georgia.
Thousands gathered to watch as two of ASU's top professors carry the torch.
Student life here on the institution's campus is never boring with all that the
clubs and organizations sponsor.

TTsee a small, vital, and brand new university supporting a dynamic twenty-first
/century curriculum for academically able students who reflect the diversity of
JL America. Yet, it is a university proudly retaining and protecting the heritage of
its founding such that is welcoming to alumni and old friends throughout the generations. This is the institution that, having carved out its unique role in the excellent University System of Georgia, applies all of its intellectual and creative energies utilizing current and attracting new resources from the community, the region, the state, the nation, and indeed, from international sources in accessing
academic excellence for its students. In return, this great new university contributes meaningfully from its own resources, especially in the Albany community,
providing enabling leadership and service to insure a brighter future for Albany
residents as well as for Albany State students.
I see an institution that models the excellence it expects of all who venture in to
work, to play, or to study. Administrators are friendly, sensitive managers of quality who address the needs of students and parents, ever seeking ways to make each
matriculation run smoothly, and ever assisting faculty colleagues in making programs of study cutting edge in design and worthy of work.
I envision strong, well prepared faculty, breeders of new and provocative ideas,
presenting challenging requisites assignments that extend campus boundaries
and reflect understanding of, build upon, then raise the capacity of each learner to
become a reflective problem solver. Faculty in this institution are available for
mentoring, nurturing, supporting, motivating, challenging, encouraging and assisting when students need them, and are present to wholeheartedly support colleagues, administrators, and other staff in achieving the collective vision of this
fine university. Faculty competent teachers, researchers, and community service providers engage in career development through action plans supported by
the hierarchy and reinforced by technology, research assistance, and opportunities
to join and participate within the professional organizations that undergird academic preparation.
I see staff who are competent, well trained and friendly, supporting students, faculty and administrators. Training for staff is regularly reinforced with ample opportunity for career advancement and recognition for good work. Through synergistic collaboration, these stakeholders, all, recognize the need for systemic
change not merely on the outside, but inside-out as well and are the source for
significant interactive, reflective exchanges of good ideas to advantage our organization. They are commended for the service they provide and are rewarded both
intrinsically and extrinsically.
Finally, I envision a user-friendly, welcoming, safe and secure place, inclusive of
the rich diversity of cultures within the state of Georgia, where people enjoy working together for the single purpose of achieving commencement for every student.

A Ibany State was first called Albany State Bible and Manual Training Institute under the administration of the late Dr.
f-M Joseph Winthrop Hoiley from 1903 to 1917. The institution was geared toward providing religious and manual training
JL JL to Negro youths of Southwest Georgia. The Hazard family of Newport, Rhode Island supported the institution financially.
Miss Caroline Hazard of the family donated the school's second structure, an administration building, formerly known as Caroline
Hall.
During the administration of Governor Hugh M. Dorsey, of the state of Georgia, assumed responsibility for the operation of the school
and the name was changed to Georgia Normal and Agricultural College. More buildings were erected and the institution expanded.
In 1943, the institution name became Albany State College. The institution grew like never before.
In June 1996, ASC became ASU. The institution then began to rebuild itself after the terrible damage that the flood did to it.
Albany State University has an extensive history that spans ninety four years and it is the history that the driving force of the
students as well as the administration as well as the staff.

H
omecoming officially began with the coronation of
Miss ASU. Students were very happy that Homecoming was finally here. Throughout the week stu­
dents showed their spirit by participating in many activities.
The parade was a big success. There were float that had hard
work put into them. There were smiles to be seen by all. Everyone
worked real hard to make Homecoming 1997 a real success.
As the weekend drew near, many anticipated the big football
game. Albany State University would host Clark Atlanta Uni­
versity. The Rams would be victorious.

}he 1996-1997 Albany State University's Ram staffproudly dedicates the yearbook to the charter class of Albany State University,
the class of 1997. They are at the forefront of the Shining New Era here at ASU.

The majority of them came here to Albany, Georgia from all parts of the United States and other countries. They began on the long
journey to becoming professional and well-educated adults. Many already possessed these qualities while others were fine-tuning it.
The class of 1997 experienced an era of having hopes and dreams shattered that came with the great flood of 1994. Many questions
were formulated. The students wondered where they would go to school at in the fall, how would they have the time to make up
credits, etc. These questions were answered in September 1994 when the university, then college, reopened to start another academic
year.
Through it all, the class of 1997 has been a role model to those that entered Albany State after them. They all will be remembered
and nothing about them forgotten. Our hats are off to you the Phenominal class of 1997 and it's now your time to shine ...

JTor the 1996-1997 academic year the rams
welcomed, Dr. Portia H. Shields, who is
affectionately known to all as Madame Pres­
ident, as their new guiding light. Madame
President, along with her staff of unit heads,
make Albany State the place that it is.
From professors to assistant professors, these
are the people that educate the many students
at ASU and these are the people that have
endless value. Without them ASU would not
be the type place it is and the students would
not be the type students that they are. The
faculty here on the campus strive to make
ASU's students to be the best that they can
be.
Custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria workers,
resident assistants, and department secretar­
ies are indeed the most frequently seen people
by the students here at ASU. The average
student would be lost without them. They are
the people that make sure that students are
educated in a clean environment, receive the
proper nutrition, equipped with the necessary
materials, and are on the road to excellence.
To the staff here at ASU, the students are
forever in your debt.
