on the courts like she does. “We
played a team once and they
said our drinking team has a
tennis problem.... I loved that,”
she laughed.
Monet hopes her passion for
the sport will get others out to
give tennis a try. “What I love
about it is seeing kids playing,
seeing people in their 80s and
90s playing and seeing different
skill levels and everyone can
just come together and have a
good time with it.” As for how
long she plans to play tennis:
“Hopefully for the rest of my
life, that’s my plan. I feel good
any day I can play.”
For more information on
forming a team or joining the
Dave FM League visit

Play begins on June 1 at 6:30
p.m., and the season commences
with City Championships.

gether a team to play at one of
the participating facilities.
Teams will play against other
teams located at their same venue so participants won’t have to
travel all over the city to play;
it’s the same location every
week.
One aspect of the league that
leaves an impression on the energetic Monet is the camaraderie
between coworkers and the new
friendships that people make.
“I think anybody should try
this. If someone wants to wear a
wig or play in costume that’s
great. I want to bring some of
the people from the station that
have never played — Mara
[Davis] and Sully and some of
those guys and try and get the
whole on air staff involved. They
don’t have to play great, but it
will just be a good time for all.”
As for her tennis, Monet just
wants to enjoy the time she
spends on the court. For her it’s
about having fun and not taking
things too seriously. “I see some
people that don’t have fun with
it unless they win. I like to win,
but I don’t mind losing if I have
fun and people are nice to me.”
Some of her favorite tennis
memories are ones that were
with people that just enjoy being

“I’ve done radio for about 20
years and now my friends tease
me that I work around my tennis schedule.”
Monet first turned to tennis
as a diversion from the stress of
being a business owner. She
owned a bar and restaurant
when she first took up the sport.
“I was spending all day in a
smoky bar and I thought I’ve got
to do something with myself
and I bought a tennis racket,
went to the YMCA and said
teach me to play tennis.” From
that point on the radio personality was hooked. “I kind of immersed myself in it the last couple of years. It’s really
interesting, I never picked it up
as a child and then one day I decided I want to play tennis and I
loved it.”
Now Monet is excited to be
representing her radio station as
the face of the Dave FM Corporate Tennis League. Her goal is
to make sure everyone gets out
to the courts and has a good
time. “It’s world team tennis format which is exciting because
everybody really contributes to
getting the points and you can
switch out players.”
Any company can join the
league they just need to put to-

If you turn your radio dial to
92.9 Dave FM you can hear radio personality Yvonne Monet
playing some of her favorites for
Atlanta listeners. But music is
not her only passion. The longtime radio veteran has a new
passion in her life, tennis.
“I started playing tennis
about 4 years ago and I just fell
in love with it,” said Monet.

League Q&A with Chris Walling
The rating listed on the top-right
corner of a player’s profile is a Year-end
rating. Players will compete all year long
on their year-end rating, unless the player is moved up or down in the March or
August Early-start ratings. Georgia
must publish the March & August Early-start ratings on the USTA
Georgia website (www.ustageorgia.com). These ratings will be used
to register for the 2010 Championship Year.
In this instance, the player had a Year-end rating of 3.5 but was
bumped down to 3.0 in the March Early-start ratings. Since the
March ratings are effective for the summer adult season (2010
Championship Year), the player will be listed as a 3.0 on the summer roster, but the rating on the individual profile will remain 3.5. The
only way to change the year-end rating is if a player appeals it
down/up.
®
®
®
®
®
®
Why does a player have 3.5 rating
listed on their profile on TennisLink
but is allowed to play on a 3.0 summer team?
The imperative factor in this answer is the point of the 4.0 Low
league. As most players will agree, there is a big transition from the
3.5 to 4.0 level. This league was created for the lower half of the 4.0
level, so those players are moving up a “mini-step” before making
the full transition to 4.0.
If your league results are showing that you are very competitive
at the 4.0 Low level, then you may have proven that you are capable of playing at the 4.0 level. In this case, you would be outside the
applicable range for the 4.0 Low league. Playing in previous seasons at 4.0 Low does not “lock” a player at 4.0 Low. Previous play
and the caliber of opponents played season after season will determine eligibility for this league.
As always, captains should make certain that each player is eligible for the 4.0 Low league by checking the 4.0 Low eligibility list at
www.ustaatlanta.com > Ratings > Check Your Rating.

I was eligible for the 4.0 Low league the past two seasons,
but I am not this upcoming summer season. Why?

MEN’S CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS
®
It took three days to play all the matches
for the Men’s City Championships that

were scheduled for February 28th at
Racquet Club of the South. The rain and
snow didn’t stop these teams from bat-
®
tling it out on the courts to become city
champions. The eight city champions
were finally named and will move on to
®
compete at the State tournament in
May. Congratulations!
