screeds and brooms.
Roadtec offers an extensive line of
pavers that, according to Roadtec, are
the most reliable and maintenancefree pavers in the industry. They are
simply designed and well balanced
for maximum tractive effort and can
be equipped with a variety of screeds,
all with electric heat as standard
equipment. Roadtec’s pavers are
designed to allow for extreme ease
of access to all major components.
Roadtec claims to be the first
manufacturer in the industry to install
an FXS fume extraction system as
standard equipment on all of Roadtec’s
pavers and Shuttle Buggy material
The RP-175 is a powerful, compact 8’ (2.5m) wide rubber-track asphalt paver designed to
work in all types of sub-grades and paving applications. Full counter-rotate ability and track
flotation allow the RP-175 to maneuver and pave in tight areas without sacrificing tractive effort
or pushing power. Seats of the dual operator stations can move out beyond the sides of the
machine to give the operator an excellent view down the sides of the machine. Like all Roadtec
pavers, the RP-175 features Roadtec’s exclusive anti-segregation design of the feed tunnel, the
feed tunnel discharge, and the rear augers. The narrow shipping width of this paver allows quick

The ‘Shuttle Buggy’
Roadtec offers the latest in pavement
placement technology with its Shuttle
Buggy material transfer vehicles.
These machines are self-propelled
transfer devices with unique antisegregation systems that remix asphalt
material to produce a consistent
size and temperature. The industrywide problem of asphalt segregation
is eliminated. Continuous, nonstop
paving is allowed by separating truck
unloading from the paving process.
Roadtec states that with the new
harder-to-lay superpave mixes and
overall tougher specifications for roads,
the qualities of its material transfer
vehicles make them a valuable item in
the new fleets of today’s contractors.

ADS SaniTite HP
HIGH-PERFORMANCE PIPE
The Roadtec Shuttle Buggy material transfer vehicle SB-1500 features a low weight and
narrower wheel base.It can store up to 15 tons (13.6 mt) of asphalt mix, allowing haul vehicles
to unload as soon as they arrive. This substantially reduces trucking costs. The SB-1500
features an end dump hopper or an optional windrow pickup head. It also features the patented
anti-segregation auger which remixes materials for control of aggregate and temperature
segregation.
ADS is certified to the new CSA standard (CSA B182.13) for its ‘SaniTite HP’ (High
Performance) pipe. SaniTite is the newest addition to the ADS family of dual wall
pipe products, and has generated a significant paradigm shift on the products
that are currently offered. The SaniTite HP’s unique engineered polypropylene
resins and structure allows greater opportunities for the product to be specified
on more storm, sanitary and high performance project applications.
SaniTite HP couples the most advanced
polypropylene resin technology with
highly engineered profile designs,
resulting in a product with significantly
greater pipe stiffness, beam strength

when compared to traditional sanitary
sewer products. It is chemically resistant
to hydrogen sulfide gas and sulfuric
acid concentrations typical of sanitary
sewers to provide superior durability
and performance. The unique light

Industry standards in sanitary
sewer
SaniTite HP pipe has a patented extended,
reinforced bell with polymer composite
bands and dual gaskets that add an
additional factor of safety within each
joint. The SaniTite HP joint performance
exceeds the 10.8 psi (74.5 kPa) laboratory
performance standards per ASTM D3212.
SaniTite HP is tested to 15 psi (103.4
kPa) to provide additional redundancy
and factor of safety for critical sanitary
sewer installations. In the field, each
section of SaniTite HP may be tested by a
low pressure air test, according to ASTM
F1417. ASTM F1417 is a commonly
used standard for diameters 12”-36”
(300 mm-900 mm) and specifies that 3.5
psi (24.1 kPa) air pressure be held for a
specified length of time based upon pipe
diameter and length of run. For diameters
greater than 30” (900 mm) SaniTite HP
joint integrity may be validated by a
joint isolation test. Where an infiltration/
exfiltration test is preferred, ASTM F2487
specifies a simplistic method of verifying
proper joint performance. A standard
tapping product, such as Inserta Tee, is
compatible with SaniTite HP. Testable
repair couplers are available at ADS
distributor locations. PVC sleeve couplers
are available for 12”-30” (300 mm900 mm) dual wall pipe. Rubber repair
couplers with stainless steel shear bands
are available for 12”-60” (300 mm-1500
mm) diameters. SaniTite HP meeting
ASTM F2736 and F2764 is currently
manufactured in 20’ (6 m) or 13’ (4 m)
lengths for diameters 12”-48” (300-1200
mm), while the 60” (1500 mm) diameter is
manufactured in 20’ (6 m) and 16.3’ (5 m)
lengths. The 20’ (6 m) lengths aid in speed
of installation and reduce the total number
of joints. However, the 13’ (4 m) lengths
are complimentary for deeper projects
where trench box conditions require a
shorter pipe.

Don’t Drink and Drive!
Does this message still work?
‘ALCOLOCK V3’
Commercially Designed
Alcohol Interlock
The ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ message
has been around for many years and
for most drivers the message has sunk
in. However, more and more drivers
who would not dream of driving after
drinking are getting into their vehicles in
the morning without realizing they could
still be over the legal limit.
Here are a few facts about drinking and
the ‘morning after’:
•It takes a lot longer than most people
think for alcohol to pass through the
body.
•On average it takes around one hour
to metabolize the alcohol from one
standard drink.
•Having a cup of coffee or a cold
shower won’t do anything at all,
you might feel slightly better, but no
alcohol has been eliminated.
• You can’t speed up the process.
•Enzymes in your liver are responsible
for breaking down alcohol. This
process can take longer if your liver is
damaged.
• TIME is the only way to sober up
Random Alcohol
and Drug testing no
guarantee...
Succeeding in today’s highly competitive
world of commercial transportation cutting
corners on safety is not an option. You
must rely on state of the art cost saving
technology that can track your vehicle,
inform you of safety concerns and help
optimize resources. You have invested an
enormous amount of capital for your fleet, to
train your employees, create and administer
company safety policies.

A vehicle operator who consumed alcohol the night before is checking to see with an
ALCOLOCK V3 if he is sober enough to drive in the morning after. If alcohol is present the
ALCOLOCK V3 will not allow the vehicle to start.
Most companies have a zero tolerance drug
and alcohol program that is monitored
randomly. These programs cannot guarantee
driver sobriety at all times. Do you really
know that your drivers are complying
with your policies on the road? Insurance
companies have clauses in the Automobile
Policy contract (Illegal Use) that will void
your insurance if a driver is convicted of
impaired driving.
‘DRUGWIPE’
DrugWipe product benefits:
•Certainty in detection of consumption:
overall reliability greater than 95%
•Faster test results: analysis in 3 to 8

•Easy to read: distinctive test lines
appear in cases of drug use
DrugWipe testers can be configured to
detect one or more of the following drugs
of abuse:
• Cannabis
• Opiates
• Cocaine
• Amphetamines
•Methamphetamines (including
MDMA/Ecstasy)
The DrugWipe range of drug detection

VATCS selection
ATS Traffic Group
Electronic Vehicle Activated
Traffic Calming Signs for Speed
Reduction on Community Streets
Market research indicated several
manufacturers with different options of
radar activated signs being available. The
primary differentiators for the VATCS and
why they were selected were as follows
• Clarity of message
• Consistent educational approach when
combined with MUTCD static signage
• Independently proven to be long term
effective
Importantly VATCS did not display drivers
speeds, rather an educated warning of the
speed limit in force and requirement to
slow down.
How VATCS work
VATCS rely on microwave radar to
determine a vehicle’s speed. When a
driver’s speed exceeds a pre-set value, the
blank VATCS becomes illuminated with
the inverted by color MUTCD warning
diagram supplemented with “SLOW
DOWN”. Dynamic amber corner beacons
attract the driver’s eye and complete the
message. The sign will stay lit for 3.5
seconds and then self cancel returning to
‘black’.
Background
Calgary communities consistently identify
motor vehicle speeds on residential
streets as an issue that requires a
solution. As a result, the City of Calgary
has investigated and installed traditional
traffic calming measures to reduce both
the 85th percentile and ‘high end’ speeds.
Both vertical and horizontal deflection
measures have been used in the past.
Calgary’s experience has shown curb
extensions (horizontal deflection) have a
limited effect on reducing speeds. Vertical
deflection (speed humps, tables and
cushions) while effective at reducing both
the 85th percentile and ‘high end’ speeds,
are not without their negative impacts on
emergency services and transit vehicles
including clients and passengers. These
negative impacts have resulted in the
City investigating alternatives to the
traditional traffic mitigation.
12
EQUIPMENT REVIEW
The Challenge –
Addressing speeds
without deflection
determine the general opinion on the
effectiveness of these permanent ‘speed
signs’. Positive feedback was received.
Various models and sizes form the VATCS
family sign series. It was recognized that
the smaller posted speed limit size was
more appropriate for neighbourhood use.
Signs accept both solar and AC supply
including part time street lighting supply.
Installation is considered straight forward
and requires a minimum of equipment and
human resources to install.
“Slow Down” message (57 km/h). The
before and after speeds were recorded
approximately two years apart, supporting
the long term impact of these signs.
Other VATCS models are available
including dual speed limit signs, school
and playground, yield ahead, cyclist ahead
and curve warning signs. To date, the City
of Calgary has purchased and installed
speed signs for 50 km/h environments and
is preparing to install VATCS in school and
playground zones. The dual speed limit
signs can be schedule programmed so that
they can function during speed zone hours
(30 km/h) and outside speed zone hours
(50 km/h).
Equipment cost at less than $10,000
per site complete with solar panel kit
and wiring to allow for hybrid power is
considered reasonable. The additional cost
of $2,000 – $4000 when special supports
are required (no acceptable street lamp
standards available) is also acceptable to
achieve speed reduction on neighborhood
streets. There has also been broad
community acceptance of these signs by
residents.
Field results
The City of Calgary’s Community Traffic
group has purchased approximately 20
VATCS. A summary of the results from
eight installations are presented below
•Largest average speed reduction
14 km/h
•Largest “high speed” reduction
341 vehicles
•Smallest 85th percentile reduction
2 km/h
•Smallest average speed reduction
1 km/h
•Smallest “high speed” reduction
7 vehicles
Measurement
Calgary communities were looking for
permanent solutions to their speeding
issues so a temporary device would
not work. Vehicle activated traffic
calming signs (VATCS) which are
placed permanently on street poles
were suggested as a potential solution.
This device appeared to have merit.
Administration undertook a survey to
www.equipmentreview.ca
Spring / Summer 2015
Conclusion
Speed control on some community streets
can be achieved through more traditional
vertical and horizontal deflection
measures.
•Largest 85th percentile reduction
16km/h
VATCS reduced 85th percentile speeds,
average speeds and the number of vehicles
travelling significantly (>16 km/h) above
the speed limit in all but two locations.
The two locations where higher speeds
were recorded had recorded speeds that
were under the speed threshold at which
the signs were set to illuminate the
Initial informal discussions with
transportation professionals resulted
in trailer style speed signs. The speed
trailer approach has merit, but also
challenges. The trailer is placed on a
roadway and therefore it takes away
parking or a travel lane. On the positive
side speeds are reduced, however,
when the signs are removed speeds are
reported to return to original values.
The signs have a high visibility when
activated and inform local residents that
their concerns over speeds in the area
are being addressed. The City of Calgary
continues to receive requests from
communities for these devices.
In other cases, deflection for speed control
is not supported. Vehicle activated speed
signs (VATCS) provide an alternative to
deflection measures by not interfering
with any part of the roadway’s design.
As a result of this difference, the City of
Calgary uses VATCS as a solution for
speed control where deflection cannot be
installed. The recorded outcomes have
propelled the City of Calgary to expand
the use of VATCS in both school and
playground speed zones.

data analysis or questions on the VATCS
technology please contact ATS Traffic

Construction projects are nowadays
carried out under tremendous pressure of
time with no regard for adverse weather,
darkness or night. The intelligent lighting
system of the WR overcomes these
challenges. It comprises six headlights at
the front of the cabin, optionally in LED

part of the WR basic on-board equipment
package. It can optionally be upgraded
to a full equipment package consisting of
four cameras installed at various points of
the machine. Upon the customer’s request,
a system comprising four high-resolution
color cameras can be installed at various
points of the machine – at the rear of the
