Bicycling Safety Top 10 List
Riding bicycles on roadways, or on bicycle-only trails that
cross roadways, can be dangerous. Follow these safety tips:

Wear a helmet and bright-colored clothing
Ride on the right side of the road
Ride single file and ride predictably
Watch for cars at intersections and driveways
Riding after dark is not recommended, but wear
reflective clothing and use a white headlight and
rear flashing red light if you do
6. Never use earphones because you won’t be able
to hear traffic
7. Select routes according to cyclist skill and age
8. Follow rules of the road and cycling etiquette
9. Keep your bicycle properly maintained

Toll Road and Interstate 94, and it is just south of Indiana
Dunes State Park and U.S. 20.

Explore Indiana Dunes Country on our roadway biking
routes. You’ll not only bike through the Indiana Dunes and
along Lake Michigan, but you’ll also tour our communities
and rural areas. Note that bicyclists share the roadways
with vehicles on all the loops listed under Indiana Dunes
Country Biking Routes on the map page.
This trail starts at Indiana Dunes State Park along Lake
Michigan and goes south to the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center.
Eventually, the trail is expected link the dunes in the north to the
Kankakee River in the south, as well as going along the river.

This trail features forest views, bridges over U.S. 20 and U.S.
12, and a way to get from the Prairie Duneland Trail to the
Calumet Bike Trail.

Iron Horse Trail
Look for these signs on our roadways to mark the
Indiana Dunes Country Biking Routes.
The 5-mile Iron Horse Heritage Trail runs east-west through
the City of Portage, from Imagination Glen Park East (where the
Iron Horse connects with the Prairie Duneland Trail) west to
Hamstrom Road.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
This 96-acre park features a 1.5-mile multiple-use trail as well
as six miles of challenging mountain biking trails.

Calumet Bike Trail
This 9.2-mile bike trail from Porter to Michigan City is adjacent
to the South Shore train tracks, Indiana Dunes State Park and
the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
Enjoy a professional-level 10 mile length of mountain biking
twists and turns on the Outback Trail at Imagination Glen Park.

Prairie-Duneland Trail
This 12-foot wide paved multi-use trail goes for 10.4 miles,
from Chesterton to Hobart. Just west of State Road 149, along
the eastern half of the trail, the Iron Horse Heritage Trail
connects with a 10’ concrete path.

Address: Multiple parking areas/access sites, which include,
from west to east, the following Portage, IN locations:
Countryside Park, 5250 U.S. Highway 6; Swanson and Lute
Road; Airport Road and Elizabeth Avenue; Swanson Road, just
north of Central Avenue; McCool Road, just south of Lenburg
Road; and these Chesterton, IN locations: County Road 200
West (Babcock Road), south of Old Porter Road; County Road
125 West (Pearson Road) and Essex Drive; and South 15th

Steel Wheels
BMX BIKING
This outdoor BMX track is open to the public Tuesday and Friday
nights. They also have a winter-only indoor track in Hobart.
Hours: Portage outdoor track open May to September, 6-9 p.m.
Tuesdays and Fridays. Hobart track only open in winter.
