coach, stated, “Our girls have
worked very hard this year. We are
very proud of their HUGE accomplishment!”
Two of the thirteen girls in the

Julie Farmer receives DAR award
Julie Farmer received an award
from the Daughters of the American
Revolution on March 13th.
Julie, along with 7 other students
from schools in the region, attended
a banquet in honor of their achievement. The banquet was held at the
United Methodist Church in Vienna.
The ceremony started with the
Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by a dinner and then the students and DAR members moved to
the Sanctuary.
The DAR recipients were each
given a certificate, a pin, and a carnation. Juanita Whiteside, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, read a small part of
the essays the students wrote, and
what clubs and organizations each
student has been involved in.
Julie Farmer commented, “The
ceremony was really nice, and I really enjoyed the whole event.
Julie Farmer was selected by VHS faculty to be the 2006 DAR nominee from Vienna

Blood Drive is a success at VHS
By Caroline Bremer
On March 3rd, HOSA held a
blood drive at VHS which turned
out to be one of the most successful
yet.
Seventeen first-time donors participated in the blood drive. Fiftynine pints of blood were collected,
which exceeded their goal of 55
pints.
Robbie Aumiller, a senior at
VHS, was a first time donor at the
event. Robbie said, “I felt privileged
to take part in the blood drive and
was very glad I did it... I also felt
kind of light headed.”
Mrs. Reichert, VHS HOSA
sponsor, stated, “I thought it went
very smoothly and was one of the
most successful blood drives that
we’ve had. Also, we only had one
student deferred because of low iron
count. What does that mean? It
means Vienna High School is eating
HEALTHY!”
All donors received snazzy tshirts for appreciation of their help
and generosity.
Mary Banks, the Red Cross
head nurse who oversaw the event,
has been coming to VHS for over
15 years. She will be retiring in April
of this year.
Ms. Banks stated, “I am really
going to miss coming to Vienna High
School. The blood drives here are
always very organized and go so
smoothly. I really appreciate all the
girls from HOSA who helped us out
as well.”
HOSA students helped at the blood drive held on March 3rd. Those pictured are as follows: top (l to r) Mrs. Reichert, Courtney Hastings,

Chateau La Roach comes to VHS
Page 3
By Caroline Bremer
Mystery, excitement, and comedy are the ingredients for this year’s
Spring play, Chateau La Roach!
The story consisted of a pleasant country hotel that becomes infested with cockroaches. This nuisance suddenly becomes a disaster,
when the owner of the establishment
discovers that a health inspector will
be visiting the hotel in a disguise as
a regular patron.
The owners and entire staff are
in an uproar as they try to discover
which of their guests is the health
inspector, and exterminate the pests
at the same time.
Julie Farmer and Dustin
Lammers co-starred in this year’s
production.
The play was performed three
times. The students performed once
for the VHS students on Friday,
March 17 at 9:30 a.m. and at 7:00
p.m. for the public. They also performed on Monday, March 20 for
the students at the local grade
schools.
Julie Farmer is a senior at VHS.
She played Mimi Laroche in this
year’s play. Julie commented, “I was
excited about the play this year, and
even though we didn’t have as much
time to practice as we normally do,
I knew we would do great. The play
went really well, and I knew we had
to make it great because last year’s
was so great.
Mrs. Guest is the drama teacher
and the drama club sponsor at
Vienna High School. She commented, “The kids worked very
hard to get this play ready. I think it
went great. I really enjoyed watching the kids work on their accents
and seeing them loosen up. I can’t
wait until next year’s play!”

VHS welcomes the Class of 2010
By Whitney Newton
On February 23, 2006 VHS
welcomed the Class of 2010 from
the feeder grade schools. The students got to experience a whole day
in high school.
They watched a PowerPoint
presentation about the clubs and organizations provided by VHS. Performances were made by the VHS
Band and Drama, as well.
They visited seven different
classes where they were showed
“mini-presentations” about the variety of classes offered. In Mr.
Reichert’s class they were shown
and taught some of the different ar-
eas and classes Mr. Reichert
teaches. They were also shown
some of the projects that the students do in the classes.
In Mr. Fairless’s room they
played FFA Jeopardy and talked
about the opportunities in FFA
throughout high school.
In Mr. Giffin’s class they talked
about Math and Science opportunities, showed a laboratory safety
video, and they performed a scientific experiment.
In Mrs. McGinnis’s room they
ate cookies, talked about the opportunities in FCCLA, and they
talked about her classes.
In Mrs. Clayton’s class, they
discussed the business classes
offered at VHS and they watched
two videos.
In Mr. Harner’s class, he told
the incoming freshman what classes
were offered here at VHS. The students then went down to Mrs.
Guest’s room where they played a
game called Fruit Basket, which is
where you have all the desks in one
big circle, and someone says something that you are wearing, and if you
are wearing that you get up and run
to a different seat.
In Mrs. Cochran’s class, they
learned the body parts in Spanish,
then they did the Hokey Pokey.
Then after lunch and a presentation in the new gym, they all split
up in groups and did a scavenger
hunt. They went to different classrooms and received different items.
Then after the scavenger hunt,
they came into the commons and
watched a presentation of themselves about what they did for the
whole day. And before departing
they all recieved the latest issue of
The Talon. All-in-all it was a very
fun day for the incoming freshman.

Accounting Challenge
Sumbitted by Mrs. May
What do paper cones have to
do with accounting? That was the
question that six Vienna High School
students were asking at the 8th
Annual SIU Accounting Challenge
held on February 24.
The paper cones were actually a part
of the team competition. Students
also competed with an individual
written test. Those competing
included: Lauren Carlton, Zachary
Elliot, Chris Nichols, Nicholas
Robinson, Shoshannah Richerson,
and Amanda Spurlock. VHS’s own
Josh Stafford was also present at the
competition, representing Shawnee
Community College.
The individual competition
consisted of a 60 question written
test in which students had to answer
various questions related to
accounting. Nicholas Robinson
commented, “While it was a difficult
test, we were pleased to discover
how many answers we did know
because of Mrs. May’s class.”
The paper cones were part of
the team competition that emphasizes
the importance of teamwork in the
workplace. The objective of the
challenge was to construct a cone
that was strong enough to withstand
gradual force put upon it. Students
were given a manila folder, a plastic
cup, two index cards, several pieces
of paper, and two strips of masking
tape with which to build a 12 inch
high cone. This cone was then
placed in a special machine which
would push the cone upward into a
bathroom scale. Some cones were
only able to support 10 pounds,
Pictured left to right: Shoshannah Richerson, Chris Nichols,
Zachary Elliot, Nicholas Robinson, Amanda Spurlock, and Lauren
Carlton
while others reached 140 pounds.
It was a lesson in problem solving,
teamwork, and trial and error.
Over 280 students from schools
across southern Illinois were present
for the competition, including
students from local community
colleges. Scholarships and awards
were given for both the individual and
team competitions. Mrs. May,
Accounting II teacher, said, “This
competition is a great opportunity for
Vienna High School students. I was
very proud of the effort that our
students put forth.”

Beta Club, Student Council, Cheerleaders, and HOSA raise money for charity
By Chris Carl
The Beta Club and Student
Council, with help from HOSA and
the VHS cheerleaders, sponsored
a charity dinner to raise money for
Cessinee Keeling and other local
charities.
The dinner was held on February 17th in the VHS commons. The
dinner was catered by Fazoli’s in
Marion, and Dippin’ Dots donated
ice cream to help raise money for
the charity event.
The dinner was open to anyone
in the community that wanted to help
Cessinee, who lost her husband in a
tragic house fire late in 2005.
Cesinee has three children, and they
not only lost their father, but everything they owned in the fire.
Cessinee is a 1996 graduate of
VHS.
Joan Clayton, Beta Club sponsor was very pleased with the outcome of the event. “I am so proud
of the students for their hard work
in making this fund-raiser a success.
They really put their hearts into this
effort to help a local family in a time
of crisis,” she said.
Beta Club Officer Credence
Mott was the top ticket seller for the
event. Credence sold over 60 tickets, and also helped by selling Dippin’
Dots at the event. Credence said,
“The Beta Club is always finding
ways to reach out and help people
who truly need it. I enjoy doing
things to help those in need.”
Mrs. JoEllen Reichert, Student
Council and HOSA sponsor, has
known Cessinee since she was a student at VHS. Cessinee was a nursing student and was an active member in HOSA when she attended
VHS, and has been a Registered
Nurse for the past seven years. She
currently works at Massac Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Reichert said, “It was wonderful to see the outpouring of support from the students, faculty and
the entire community. It was a great
feeling to help one of our graduates
during this terrible tragedy.”
The VHS Beta Club holds a
fund-raising event, like this one, every year. Vienna High School is
proud to have such an active Beta
Club. The annual efforts of the VHS
Beta Club are greatly appreciated
by those who receive.
Several teachers and community members came out to help support the effort.
Pictured above is Mrs. Holhubner and her family.
Caroline Bremer and Kassie Jones served Dippin’ Dots, which were
donated to help raise money at the event.
Kayla Butler served Fazoli’s bread sticks, which were a hit
at the dinner.
Brittni Throgmorton and Allison Bean were among several Student Council and
Beta Club members that worked at the dinner.
Kelly Bryant and Amanda Pirtle also sold Dippin’ Dots at lunch to students to help raise money
for the event.

at home.
While they were on the tour of
the station, they also toured the master control room and the news set.

During the musical festival the

FFA has busy schedule in 2006
By Caroline Bremer
“I believe in my own ability to
work efficiently and think clearly,
with such knowledge and skill as I
can secure.” This quote comes from
the National FFA Creed. Our
Vienna FFA Chapter is putting that
idea into action this spring season.
Out of the many supervised agricultural experiences, the proficiency event is one of the most prestigious. This years participants were
Cory Ross, Kassie Ross, and David
Yandell. The competition was held
on February 6th. Kassie, a junior
at VHS, and David, a senior, advanced on the District competition
on March 8th held at Benton High
School. David won the District
competition and will advance on to
Champaign, IL on April 1st for the
state competition.
Kassie Ross commented, “I’m
really excited about both of our
placings. I felt it was a great experience and I look forward to next
year’s competition. ”
FFA week was next on the calender. It went very smoothly and it
was a fun week for all.
Haley Huff reflected on the
week. “I thought the week went just
dandy. The activities were so exciting!”
Many FFA members had a fun
day at the Farm Machinery show in
Louisville, Kentucky on February
18th and 19th. The FFA admired
exhibits of the best farm equipment
America has today.
Up next for FFA members was
the public speaking competition held
at Gallatin County on February
23rd. Kassie Ross and David
Yandell participated in the extemporaneous speaking and Caroline
Bremer recited the creed. All placed
well, and David and Caroline advanced on to Districts which will be
held on April 5th at Southern Illinois
University.
As busy as the schedule has
been, the FFA still has much to look
forward to, such as, the livestock
judging competition, the ever famous
FFA banquet, and the State Convention in June.
FFA members stand in front of their tractors during National FFA Week. Those pictured are as follows (left to right): top, Sam Cullison,

Vienna High School hosts first Annual Pickleball Tournament
By Robbie Aumiller
The first Annual Vienna High
School Pickleball Tournament had
a great turnout. The mixed doubles
had 12 teams, women’s singles had
12 players, and men’s singles had
an astonishing 39 players.
In mixed doubles, Derek
Trovillion and Lacie Endrizzi came
back all the way from the losers’
bracket to take down the winners’
bracket champions Cody Short and
Alisa Goines twice.
The
championship was a very close
match where Trovillion and Endrizzi
prevailed 13-11. Derek and Lacie
commented, “The pickle-ball
tournament was a blast, and the
championship was too close.”
In women’s singles, Kristen
Wetherell went undefeated and
breezed through the competition.
She played very well every match,
and took down everyone who stood
in her way. “The tournament was
really fun, but I wish more girls
would have participated,” explained
Kristen.
In men’s singles, the tennis team
represented themselves nicely by
snagging the top 3 places. Isaiah
Cornelius lost to Robbie Aumiller in
early round play, but later found his
revenge by defeating Aumiller in the
losers’ bracket championship.
The Vienna High School pickle ball champions are pictured above (left to right) Cody Short, Kristen Wetherell, Lacie
Endrizzi and Derek Trovillion
Cody Short, however, was too much
for Isaiah and clinched the title with
a 11-2 victory. Short went through
the tournament undefeated and can
now claim he is the best pickleballer
in the school. “The pickleball
