Lauren Smith and Bruce West named Prom Queen and King

This year’s prom was held at
the Luther F. Carson Four Rivers
Center in Paducah. The 25 seniors who comprised the prom
committee planned and decorated
the prom around their chosen
theme “Eternal Memories.” The
beautiful decorations were complimented by the delicious food
served by Kathy Davis. Chad
Colson provided fun and music
as DJ for the event.
Also joining the celebration
was retiring Queen Lacie
Endrizzi, who crowned this
year’s King and Queen. Bruce
West and Lauren Smith were
named 2008 VHS prom King and
Queen
After-prom was held at Heartland Worship Center. Of the 222
students that attended prom, 159
stayed for the after-prom activities, which included basketball,
billiards, arcade games, air
hockey, video games, a climbing
wall, foosball, and the everpopular Twister tournament.
Food was also plentiful at after prom, with tasty snacks including pizza, chips, and sub
sandwiches.
Prizes were awarded to lucky
winners of a random drawing and
to the championship Twister tournament team of Kassie Jones and
Kelsey Adams. The two students
who climbed to the top of the
rock wall, Paige Alford and
Nicole Martinez, were also rewarded with a prize.
Senior class sponsors Joan
Clayton and David Hill coordinated Prom 2008. They were
very pleased with the outcome.
Ms. Clayton commented, “The
Prom Committee worked very
hard to ensure that the prom was
a success, and their efforts really
paid off! Everyone seemed to
enjoy themselves, which made it
a fun a memorable night.”
Junior class sponsors Ms.
Cochran and Mr. Palmer are already planning for next year’s
event.

Leadership Team holds school wide Teen Safe Driving Week

During the week of March 31
through April 5, the VHS Leadership Team sponsored a schoolwide Teen Safe Driving Week.
After over a month of preparation
for the event, the Leadership
Team succeeded in carrying-out
the one week extravaganza.
Dr. Trover, Leadership Team
sponsor, applied for a grant earlier this year and received money
and permission to start the event.
The Leadership Team separated into committees and started
the planning two weeks before
they set a date. With the many
snow and flood days in March,
the preparation was set into overdrive. Students made buttons,
banners, wrote rap songs, and set
up lunch time games and events
for the upcoming week.

Field, both Juniors and members
of the Leadership Team, made a
special edition Access VHS to
showcase the activities on Friday.
Philip Hosfeldt, a senior
member, updated the school website to contain information and
the week’s schedule of events.
Every day that week, students
who drove to school received
tickets for an early lunch dismissal if they were wearing their
seatbelt upon arriving at the
school.
On Monday, the first half of
“Smashed”, a safe driving video
was shown during channel 1
time. The noontime activity was
the preliminaries for the remote

Leadership Team holds school wide Safe Driving Week

racing for the juniors, qualified
at the fastest time winning him
the pole position. Following
him were the seniors with second, the sophomores in third,
and the freshmen taking the last
spot.
On Tuesday, the remaining
half of “Smashed” was shown
and the finals were held in re-
mote control car races. The
sophomore class took the lead
and came out on top with first
place. The were followed by
seniors in second, juniors in
third, and freshmen in last
place.
Wednesday there were
found to be major differences in
the school. Every hallway was
converted into a bustling city
street. Students’ goal was to
get safely to class without hitting another student, and following all road rules. Leadership Team members were
watching from the sidelines
ready and willing to write stu-
dents up for any violation. A
short skit was also performed
by the safe driving crash test
dummies about driving distracted.
There were many professional speakers during lunchtime including insurance representative Benny Adams, and
state trooper Bridget Rice.
As they were on Wednesday, the halls were again roads.
Another speaker, medical professional Terry Mullins, visited
the school to discuss the medical side of driving distracted. A
special noontime activity was
prepared to warn students of the
dangers of driving impaired. A
few students were selected to
sport the blurred vision goggles
and complete an obstacle
course.
On Friday, the special edition Access VHS was played
for the student body to view.
The remote control cars that
were raced were also raffled
off.
After all of the hard work
and effort put forth by the
Leadership Team, the week was
very successful. It greatly informed the school of the consequences of driving distracted.

VHS basketball programs name new head coaches

For the upcoming 20082009 basketball season there
will be some changes made to
the coaching staff here at VHS.
Mr. Rick Metcalf, four year
head boy’s basketball coach at
VHS, announced he would not
be back next year as coach for
the 2008-2009 season.
Next year, Mr. Ross Hill
will replace Coach Metcalf as
head coach of the boy’s basketball team. Mr. Hill has been
coach of the girl’s basketball
team for nineteen years, and
has been the Athletic Director
for the past five years. Mr. Hill
said he is excited to be new
head coach. For twelve years
prior to coaching the Lady Eagles, Mr. Hill coached the boys,
so hopefully the task won’t be
too challenging. All VHS students believe he will do well as
new boy’s head basketball
coach next season. With Mr.
Hill as the new boy’s head
coach, that left a position for a
new girl’s coach.
Ms. Beth Widowski was the
chosen successor to take the
head coach position for the
Lady Eagles next year. “I am
absolutely ecstatic to have the
opportunity to run my own basketball program. To be the
head girl’s coach at my alma
mater is a dream come true,”
Ms. Widowski’s stated.
Ms. Widowski is up to the
challenge handed to her but
said, “It will take a lot of hard

Miss Illinois makes a visit to VHS

On March 24th, Miss Illinois, Ashley Hatfield, came to
Vienna High School to talk to
students about responsibility
and making good decisions.
Ms. Hatfield explained all
of her obstacles she went
through to receive the position
of Miss Illinois and to practice
her dream of singing. During
her visit she taught students that
throughout your life there will
be people that will get you
down, but to stay with the positive and ignore their negative
comments. This happened to
her many times, but she still
keeps reaching for her goal of
being a country singer.
During her visit at VHS,
she also visited the Leadership
Team and the Nursing students.
She explained to the groups that
she became a leader by traveling to schools all over and talking to the students.
Miss Illinois also taught
students how to make the right
decisions and shared a story of
a young man who ruined his
life by not using the right decision.
At the end of her time, Miss
Illinois took questions from the
students and sang The National
Anthem for the students and
faculty.

2008 Spring Spor ts seasons continue

The spring sports teams are
doing very well. The baseball team
has started out with a very strong
season. Even though Derek Trovillion cannot pitch this season, due to
an injury he got last season, the
team is staying strong. Zach Elliot,
Chris Nichols, Sean Stram, Sean
Fitzgerald, and Colten Krelo are
the pitchers this season.
The team’s batting average is
also very strong this year. Senior
Bruce West said, “The team is
playing well this season. We are
playing good team baseball, and
hitting well up and down the
lineup. If we can put some hits together we will be a tough team to
beat this spring.”
The VHS tennis team is also
doing very well this year. The first
match was on April 1. Varsity was
tied at the end of singles, but after
the doubles match the team barely
lost the Massac Patriots. JV won
their match. “The tennis team has
greatly improved over last year,”
said Coach Debbie Hunter. “I am
very happy with all the players and
the effort they are putting forth. We
look forward to a great season.”

New Spanish foreign exchange student comes to VHS

Paula Susarte Dealbert, a foreign
exchange student from Spain, recently
came to VHS.
Vienna High School has been
honored to host Paula Susarte Dealbert, a new foreign exchange student
from Spain.
Paula is becoming exposed to the
small town atmosphere in Vienna as
opposed to her home in Barcelona.
The 18 year-old student’s most recent
high school in Spain was Ies Monserrat where she was a member of the
dance team. In Spain, her favorite
area of study is history.
Paula has been in the U.S. since
August of this year, and her new host
family is Tim, Laura, and Eli Cochran. Ms. Cochran teaches Spanish
and English courses at VHS.
In her spare time, Paula enjoys
the Barcelona nightlife and going to
movies with friends. Paula explained
that, in contrast to Southern Illinois,
Spain has dance clubs for all different
ages not just once you are 18. For
example, there are clubs specifically
for 16 and 17 year-olds.
With the end of school just
around the corner, Paula will get to
take home some very fun experiences
from Vienna. She is presently a member of the tennis team, and she also
attended prom.
Her favorite experience in America so far has been her trip with the
Cochran family to the City Museum
in St. Louis over spring break.
Paula’s favorite quote is “Carpe
diem!” which means seize the day!

Globetrotters visit ancient Greece during spring break

On Thursday April 3, the
VHS Globetrotters boarded a
plane in Nashville, Tennessee.
From there they went to Newark, New Jersey and from there
it was a straight shot to Athens,
Greece. Upon arrival they met
up with a small group from Atlanta, Georgia who accompanied them through the week.
Athens, a beautiful city by
the sea, was located in the
southern area of the mainland.
The first day was spent lounging on the beach and shopping
on the downtown strip.
During the next few days,
the students and adults visited
ancient sites like The Acropolis
and the Temple of Zeus. It was
then on the third day that they
took a short one day cruise to
three of the smaller islands.
These islands included Aegina, Poros, and Hydra. The
cruise ship docked for about an
hour and a half at each small
town.
The group had the
choice of visiting archeological
sites, shopping, or doing local
activities. Many chose to ride
donkeys to tour smaller towns.
The next day the travelers
loaded a bus and continued the
land tour at Delphi to see the
Temple of Apollo and to learn
of the ancient oracles. They
stayed the night in Patras.
Their next stop was Olympia, where the first Olympics
were held in honor of Zeus.
Students were allowed to run
the track there and visit the
Olympia museum.
The next day a bus took the
Globetrotters to Mycenae.
There they saw an amphitheater
that has the best acoustics.
The following evening the
group went out for traditional
Greek dancing and food.
The trip to Greece was the
final journey for Annie Waycuilis, a senior at VHS. Waycuilis said, “It was so much fun
and educational too. We saw
so many ruins and the swimming in the Mediterranean was
the best!”
After an extra long layover
on their way back, they finally
arrived in Nashville at about
midnight on Saturday with a
case of jet lag and exhaustion.

VHS Drama Club presents: The Bachelor King

Vienna High School
Drama Club presented the
Bachelor King as their 20072008 play production. Many
students assisted and participated in the play which made
the performance a success.
Ms. Guest, the Drama
club sponsor, had the pleasure
of directing the production.
She commented, “I think that
overall the play was done
very well. The cast and crew
did an outstanding job to
make the production the success it was.”
There were three performances of the play. Two were
held on March 14th, one to

one held at night for the public. The remaining performance was on March 17th ing

VHS honors winter athletes

On Thursday, March 13, 2008, VHS
Athletic Department held a banquet for
all the winter athletes.
In past years, there has been one annual banquet for all sports, but this year
the ceremonies have been split up by
seasons. In the fall, VHS recognized the
two newest sports, football and volleyball. The spring banquet will honor softball, baseball, track, tennis, and band.
Beginning the evening was the boy’s
basketball team, with head coach Rick
Metcalf, and assistant coaches Cory Waters and Brandon Bundren handing out
the awards. The boys finished their season with a 20-6 record. Individual
awards were received by all seniors.
Bruce West and Brad Painter took home
the “Mr. Hustle” awards, and Nicholas
Robinson received the “Most Improved”
award. Senior Brett Thompson was honored with the “Most Blocks”, “Most
Points”, “Most Rebounds”, “MVP”, and
the “Co-Captain” awards. Tyler Smith,
also a senior starter, was awarded “Best
3 Point Percentage”. Chris Nichols, senior, was another recipient of the “CoCaptain” award, and also got the “Best
Free Throw Percentage” award. Senior
Derek Trovillion, was the third honoree
of the “Co-Captain” award, and he also
received the “Most Assists” and “Most 3
Pointers Made in Career” awards. Jun-

Next for the evening’s ceremony
were the VHS cheerleading sponsors
Tina Penrod, Gina Langston, and Lisa
Taylor. The girls had a very successful
season including first place at the Vienna
Classic Tournament and finished sixth in
the IHSA State Cheerleading Competition. Senior Casey White received top
honors earlier in the season with a $500
cheerleading scholarship from the ICCA.
Moving right along on the evening’s
agenda, the VHS dance team’s sponsor,
Keri Taylor, made their introductions.
This year there were only two senior cocaptains, Vanessa Botarf and Koren
Holder. The VHS dance team performs
at half-time of the varsity boys’ basketball games.
Last, but not least, was the Lady Eagles’ basketball team. Awards were presented by Coach Ross Hill and assistant
coach Beth Widowski. Senior Aerial
Woolverton was honored with the “Best
Free Throw Percentage” and the coveted
“MVP” award. Aerial also reached the
1,000 points marker this season. Reagan
Summers, junior, received the “Most Rebounds” award. The Lady Eagles’ season ended with a winning 18-10 record.

VHS celebrated National Pi Day

VHS celebrated Pi Day the
week of March 10th through
March 14th. Some students had
the opportunity to buy a slice of
pie at lunch. Some of the VHS
teachers volunteered to get a
pie in the face. Students could
donate money to which of those
teachers they wanted to see get
a pie in the face. The top three
teachers received a pie in the
fa ce . T he y w er e Mrs.
McGinnis, Mr. Giffin and Mr.
Hill.
The money raised from selling the pies was donated to Relay for Life. VHS raised
$250.00 from the pie sales
The reason for this day is
because around the U.S. studies
have shown that students math
range tends to be low and by
having Pi Day it may help raise
math awareness and calculus
projects.
Pi Day was started by Larry
Shaw, a physicist in 1987. Pi is
a mathematical concept and a
number that never ends, is often
rounded off to 3.14. March
14th is the date of Pi Day and it
is also Albert Einstein’s birthday and some say that is another reason for Pi Day.

VHS Seniors play in All-star games
Mock wreck presented to students

Two VHS seniors, Derek
Trovillion and Brett Thompson
received athletic honors and
were invited to participate in
special events. They both had
the chance to participate in an
All-star game and three point
shootout.
Derek’s three-point shootout and All-Star game took
place at Carbondale High
School. Brett competed in the
same three point shootout and
participated in an All-Star game
in St. Louis.
Derek and Brett participated
in a three point shootout before
Derek’s All-star game. Derek
received first place in the shootout making nine out of fifteen.
Derek said, “Shooting has always been my thing, I take a lot
of pride in it and the three point
shootout is just one of those fun
contests that I was fortunate
enough to compete in and I
happened to come out on top.”
Brett participated in the
three point shootout at Carbondale with Derek. He said,
“Even though I struggled it’s
always good to shoot three’s in
front of a crowd because not a
lot of people think I can shoot.”
In his All-Star game Derek
scored five points and received
an award for participating. His
All-star team played another
All-star team from Southern
Illinois. Derek said, “It was an
honor to be selected to play in
the game. It was also a lot of
fun to put the Vienna jersey
back on for one more game.”
On April 12th, Brett participated in his All-Star game in
Saint Louis. Brett helped his
team win by scoring 4 points,
had 5 blocks, and 8 rebounds.
He played with other All-Star’s
from Missouri and Illinois. He
received the jersey from the
game and a tee-shirt. Brett
stated, “I felt pretty good. I was
out there playing with other Division I recruits, the best in Illinois and Missouri. It’s always
fun to go and play with guys
you don’t know, it’s a chance to
prove how good you really
are.”
Wednesday, April 16, the
VHS JILG students performed
a mock wreck.
Cagle’s Towing Service
provided the wrecked vehicle
for the performance.
Fake
blood for the “victims” was
provided by the Johnson
County Ambulance Service.
Four students participated in
the wreck. Kyle Conley posed
as the drunk driver, and
Jeremiah Johnson, Katie Ames,
and Ryan Yates were passengers in his car.
In the scenario, Jeremiah
was apparently slung from the
vehicle and landed facedown
on the hood of the car and instantly killed. Kyle was in decent condition, other than the
injuries he received from the
airbag, and was later arrested
for many charges including
DUI. Another unfortunate passenger was Katie, who was not
wearing a seatbelt and was
hanging out of the side of the
car unconscious, but survived.
The only passenger wearing a
seatbelt was Ryan. He was
trapped in the back of the car
due to the cave in of the roof.
He survived, but with some injuries. As part of the mock
wreck, David Rockwell, county
coroner, pronounced Jeremiah
dead.
Other than the services provided by the ambulance service,
the Vienna Fire Department
and Police Department joined
in. Illinois State Trooper, Sergeant Bridgett Rice, was the
first to report to the scene.
The JILG students would
like to thank all who helped put
on this presentation. It really
reached a lot of the students
and they appreciate their time
and commitment.

VHS hosts Red Cross blood drive

Monday, March 24th,
Vienna High hosted the American Red Cross biannual blood
drive. There were 63 donors
that signed in, but only 45 were
able to donate. The Red Cross
collected 45 units of blood,
which exceeded the goal that
was set of 40. There were also
26 first time donors.
VHS is very proud of all the
students and faculty that donated to the Red Cross. Those
donors from the senior class

Connor, Katie Ames, Lisa Ri-
ley, Travis Crain, Kalie
McGinnis, Jason Hynes, Nicholas Robinson, Colten Stafford,
