TOVE JANSSON
Writer and artist Tove Jansson’s (1914 – 2001) Moomins
have enchanted people over the world for several
decades already. The first Moomin book, The Little Trolls
and the Great Flood, was published for the first time in
1945 and the popularity of the Moomins has grown ever
since. Professor Tove Jansson created an extraordinarily
beautiful world through her Moomin stories and illustrations where she showed that life is perfect as it is and one
should enjoy it! The co-operation between Arabia and the
Moomins started already in the 1950s.

TOVE SLOTTE
WELCOME TO THE MOOMINVALLEY!
Arabia’s Moomins are turned from stories to ceramic
illustrations by designer Tove Slotte. She has been drawing Moomins onto Arabia items since the beginning of the
1990s. The designer draws inspiration from Tove Jansson’s
original illustrations, which she adapts to ceramic shapes.
The Moomins have always been close to Tove Slotte’s
heart. She articulated the significance of the Moomins
nicely when she said: I think everyone should enjoy a little
dose of Moomin philosophy every day.
All sorts of exciting things happen around Moominvalley all the time. In addition to the Moomins, the
valley is inhabited by mymbles, hemulens, fillyjonks
and all kinds of small toffles and whompers. The
outside world consist of dangers, adventures, even
catastrophes as well as enjoyable friendly outings
and juice parties. The doors of Moominhouse are
always open to Moomins returning home or to
wandering vagabonds and other guests. Welcome
to the colourful world of the Moomins!

The Moomins share a straightforward approach to life.
They live in harmony with nature, welcome visitors and
wanderers to their life and home. Every now and then
they go on journeys of exploration, knowing that they
always have a safe home to return to. In addition
Moomins love to arrange parties. With Moomin items

The Moomin philosophy appeals to children and adults
alike. Especially older readers are interested in the
significance of the stories and characters while younger
ones are fascinated by the colourful adventures of the
Valley´s residents. Tove Jansson´s storytelling is extremely rich in many ways.

MOOMIN STORY
In year 1945 the first Moomin story - The
Moomins and the Great Flood – was published.
It is the story about Moominmamma’s and
Moomintroll’s search for the missing Moominpappa and how they found their way to the
Moominvalley. Moomin stories were born.
Finnish brand Arabia, known for its highs quality ceramics, launched the very first Moomin
series in the 1950’s in collaboration with Tove
Jansson herself.

LITTLE MY 2015
In the summer, the philosophic Snufkin lives in a tent down by the stream.
In the autumn he travels south over the Lonely Mountains. He is completely free and likes being alone yet he is Moomin’s best friend.
Little My is the Mymble’s youngest sister and she has decided to stay
and live with the Moomin family. She is so small that she can sit on top of
Snufkin’s hat yet she is afraid of nothing! Little My is mostly angry but still
happy and totally unrestrained.

Moomin is a little troll with a positive attitude who is always on a voyage
of discovery in the world. He admires the wandering vagabond, Snufkin,
but would himself rather fall asleep in his own bed.
Snorkmaiden is Moomin’s beautiful and temperamental girlfriend. She
is very feminine and extremely romantic but she also has a very sensible
side to her.

Moominmamma is the pillar of the family who has an answer or remedy
for every possible question and complaint. To her it is just as commonsensical to prepare a medieval magic portion according to her grandmother’s
recipe as it is to pick currants into Moominpappa’s hat.
Moominpappa in his top hat, loves adventures. He writes about
his exciting boyhood days in his memoirs. Moominpappa feels
equally at ease on the raging seas as he does on his peaceful porch.

FUZZY 2011
Sniff, like Little My, lives in the Moomin family’s house. He loves to join the
Moomins in everything they do – unless things get dangerous, because
Sniff is easily scared. He is very well-behaved but has a strong liking for
gems and glitter; the more valuable, the better. Sniff spends a lot of time
planning how to get rich, but most of his plans come to nothing.
Fuzzy is the wife of Muddler. These two were so eager to get married that
they exchanged vows before the wedding ceremony even started.

Muddler lives in an old coffee tin. He loves to collect buttons, although
he never manages to keep his collection in order.
Stinky is small and ill-tempered with a penchant for mischief. He constantly plays pranks on the other inhabitants of Moominvalley, out of sheer
nastiness as much as out of a genuine fondness for trickery and stealing.
However, Stinky always gets caught. His other interests are eavesdropping, sabotage and ingratiating himself with the Police Inspector. He is
proud of his reputation as a villain and does his best to live up to it.

GROKE 2005
INSPECTOR 2009
The Groke is a dark and frightening creature who spreads fear wherever
she goes. She comes unbidden and hardly ever utters a word. The Groke
is surrounded by an icy chill and the earth freezes under her feet. Not
much is known about her life, because she doesn’t like anybody and
nobody really likes her.
The Police Inspector is in charge of law enforcement in Moominvalley, but
doesn’t have much to do, because the valley is a very peaceful place. His
only enemy is nasty little Stinky, who never causes any serious trouble,
however.

HATTIFATTENERS 2007
THINGUMY AND BOB 2005
Hattifatteners are ghost-like creatures that move about silently in large
groups. They aren’t interested in anything but travelling – all the way to
the horizon and beyond. The white, faceless Hattifatteners neither speak
nor hear and have no need for food or sleep. If a herd of Hattifatteners
are gathered together, they simply stand next to each other and shiver.
Thingumy and Bob are inseparable, usually walking hand in hand and
speaking a weird dialect that only Hemulen understands at first. Sniff
even thinks they speak a foreign language. The small and curious pair
loves to hide in narrow spaces, for example in drawers or under rugs.
They are friendly to everyone, but like to keep their little secrets.

The Moomins live in a round, blue house that’s the same shape as a
ceramic fireplace. The house originally had only two storeys, but the
numerous visitors soon made it feel cramped. The Moomins extended
the house, which now has three storeys and a cellar.
Mymble is the sister of Little My and the half-sister of Snufkin. As the
eldest, she assists her mother in taking care of her many siblings. The
helpful and friendly Mymble resembles Little My, but is taller in size.

Snorkmaiden and Moomintroll like each other a lot and they love
hanging out together. However when Snorkmaiden becomes
