Hollywood Party at The Palace ‘10
From Beach Blanket Bingo to Woodstock, Hollywood Party
at The Palace will be a celebration of the music and movies
of the 1960s.
Greensburg Garden & Civic Center
Stark/James Building
Union Trust Building
The fifth annual Hollywood Party at The Palace, the Trust’s
signature event, is set to take you on a magical tour of
the 1960s for a lavish evening of fun, sumptuous food,
and entertainment. As always, this will be an evening to
remember, immersing you in the sights and sounds of the
1960s from the moment you, the star, walk down the red
carpet and into The Palace Theatre. Go back to the days of
go-go boots and the Twist as the Megan Suite is transformed
into the Peppermint Lounge. Aretha, Tina, Janis and the lads
from Liverpool will be there to entertain! And upstairs - it’s
a beach party! Frankie and Annette and the whole surfing
gang will be there to welcome you to the party. Or, if you
are looking for more refinement, visit the Casino Royale on
the Mezzanine and share a martini (shaken, not stirred) with
James Bond. Be sure to catch scenes from musicals of the
‘60s on the grand staircase - West Side Story, Mary Poppins,
and Hair, just to name a few.

Fifth Annual
Holiday Fashion Fantasy
This year’s Holiday Fashion show, held on Thursday, November 5th at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center, was
remarkable! More than 200 guests were greeted by Santa as they received a champagne welcome and were ushered
into the Laurel/Iris room. The hallway of the GG&CC was decorated by The Garden Club with greenery for the
Holidays, and a collection of unique Santas from the Fashion Show committee surrounded the room of delicious hors
d’oeuvres. A warm and cozy living room setting was created on stage for the formal fashion show. The spirit of the
holidays was everywhere you turned! The models were ready for the season with fall and holiday fashions from area
retailers including Beeghly & Company Jewelers, Beijo Handbags, Crossroads Boutique, Descendants- A Children’s
Boutique, Golf for Her, Lapel’s – A Fine Mens Clothier, MB Bride, Never Enough! Boutique, Personalized Colors,
Sabika Austrian Crystal Jewelry, Shalimar Bazaar, Silpada Designs Jewelry, The Fur Salon at Saks Fifth Avenue and
Tree House in Ligonier.
President, Mike Langer with committee
co-chairwomen, Jane Church & Mary Lou Hugus
Each guest received a gift bag filled with gifts and holiday discount coupons donated by several people and businesses in the area. WTAE personality Jennifer Miele
was the guest host and narrator once again. Each year she does a fabulous job interacting with the models and this year we had a surprise for her! Guest model
Michael Haynes, WTAE Meteorologist, modeled fashions from Lapels and surprised Jennifer when he walked out on stage! Men’s and women’s festive fashions
from casual to formal wear, from golf attire to furs, created the fantasy. Several children danced, waived and twirled their way across the stage in their holiday finest!
Following the stage modeling, guests were invited for coffee and desserts while several retailers offered early holiday shopping.
The fashion show committee, led by Jane Church and Mary Lou Hugus, left no detail unattended. A special thanks to Jane, Mary Lou and the Fashion Show Committee
members who made the event so spectacular: JoAnn Anderson, Joann Blair, Jill Briercheck, Mary Ann Calabrase, Candace Cassidy, Lori Ann Chaussinand, Peg
Colosimo, Mary Ann DeAngelo, Gerry Gomolak, Mary Lou Hacker, Kathy Hager, Diane Hartland, Lisa Hoffman, Phyllis Kluska, Mitzi Marricco, Diane Mitinger,
Karla Monsour, Marjorie Nelson, Jovanna Peterinelli, Connie Riley, Nancy Rogers, Karen Scanlan, Louise Smith, Joan Stairs and Jan Taylor.
The event’s generous sponsors included ABB Inc., Beeghly and Company Jewelers, Cassidy, Kotjarapoglus & Pohland, LLC, First Commonwealth Bank, First
National Bank, Francis R. Johns, M.D., Lane Center for Advanced Dentistry, McDowell Associates Insurance, Overly Manufacturing Company and S&T Bankcorp
& Charitable Foundation. The Holiday Fashion Fantasy was underwritten by The Center for Medical Imaging, Le Jardin Florals and Home Décor, and Never
Enough! Boutique. Proceeds raised at the fashion show will be used to support Westmoreland Cultural Trust programs: The Palace Theatre, Greensburg Garden and
Civic Center, Greensburg Area Cultural Council, Train Station at Greensburg, Union Trust and Stark/James Buildings and the Lamp Theater in Irwin.

Duquesne University
Tamburitzans
Sunday, January 10 at 2pm - The Palace Theatre
The Duquesne University Tamburitzans is the longest-running
American folk ensemble dedicated to the artistic performance and
preservation of Eastern European music, song, and dance. Colorful
and spellbinding, it’s the best of culture and tradition brought to life
on stage by some of the world’s most talented young folk artists.
The ensemble encapsulates the joys of life and the beauty of the cultures which
it artistically represents. Wherever the Tamburitzans perform, their stage becomes a kaleidoscope
of sight and sound. Songs are sung in many languages and dialects, footwork is articulated in
hundreds of styles, and folk instruments are plucked, picked, bowed and hammered. During the
course of a single performance, 400+ original and authentically reproduced costumes are worn by
the performers. The result is a carousel of style and color from the first note to the final stomp.
Jungle Jack Hanna
Friday, February 5 at 7:30pm - The Palace Theatre
Recognized around the country as America’s favorite zookeeper,
Jungle Jack took his infectious energy to the airwaves by creating
two of his own nationally syndicated television programs, Jack
Hanna’s Animal Adventures and most recently Jack Hanna’s Into
the Wild. Into the Wild is unscripted and action-packed as Jack
and his family explore the corners of the globe and discover
amazing animals and cultures. In its first season, Into the Wild won an
Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Series.
Jungle Jack’s live show features many of his favorite animal friends, as well as fascinating and
humorous stories and footage from his adventures around the world. Everyone from the youngest
child to the oldest adult is entertained and inspired.
Gaelic Storm

of the Celtic music genre by creating compelling originals

and acoustic instrumentation. Their illustrious career
Phone: 724-836-8000
now spans over a decade with highlights that include a mini-documentary on

Cinemax, six Billboard Chart topping albums, a DVD, a song placement on two EA Sports Games

and an appearance in the movie Titanic. Gaelic Storm released their seventh album titled What’s
The Rumpus? in July 2008. The album captures the contagious energy of Gaelic Storm’s renowned
live performances. It channels the rowdy communal feel of an Irish pub with raucous sing-alongs, driving pipe sets, and spirited fiddle tunes. Gaelic Storm’s dynamic stage
show features rousing, upbeat vocals, energetic dance tunes, haunted Celtic ballads and infectious madcap humor.
Friday, March 19 at 7:30pm - The Palace Theatre
Pirates of Penzance
This New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players production is your chance to get carried away by Pirates. Join the band of swashbuckling
buccaneers, bumbling British bobbies, and frolicsome Victorian maidens, for a rollicking romp over the rocky coast of Cornwall. This
exuberant musical theater masterpiece, directed and conducted by Albert Bergeret with choreography by Bill Fabris, is performed in
its original format. The rich sounds of full orchestra, chorus, and vocal soloists resonate with classic elegance and power while the
company’s vibrancy, energy and contemporary sense of humor keep the show alive and exciting to a modern audience. The Pirates of
Penzance - they’ll steal your heart away!
STOMP
Friday, April 2 at 8pm; Saturday, April 3 at 2pm & 8pm
The Palace Theatre (Easter Weekend)
BACK
WITH NEW
SURPRISES!
The high-enrgy, dynamic celebration of sound and movement returns with updated sections and new routines! Ordinary objects create
extraordinary rhythms in a percussive symphony played entirely on unconventional instruments such as garbage can lids, buckets,
brooms and sticks. The changes that can now be seen in the tour of STOMP are the biggest since the late 1990s. From its beginnings
as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation over the past fourteen years, having performed
in more than 350 cities in 36 countries worldwide. STOMP continues its phenomenal run with the ongoing sell-out Off-Broadway production at
New York’s Orpheum Theatre, a North American tour, and two productions overseas - a London company and a European tour. Don’t miss the triumphant return of STOMP!
International Christmas for Children
Inclement weather did not curtail the enthusiasm for our fourth annual International Christmas for Children. What a wonderful
way to usher in the Christmas season! More than 80 children from across Westmoreland County enjoyed storytelling, songs
and crafts related to the cultures of Brazil, Finland, France, Italy and Norway. We enjoyed seeing all of the smiles that
International Christmas brought to their faces!
Warm weather was the topic of discussion in Brazil and kids made Christmas palm trees from paper bags. Traveling to
Finland, we listened to a Christmas story by a Finnish author and decorated gingerbread cookies shaped like crescents and
stars. In France, children learned about the traditional Yule log and decorated their very own homemade craft version. In
Italy, children learned of the antics of “Jingle the Christmas Clown,” a story by Tomie de Paola, and made their own jingling
door hanger. And finally, a stop in Norway added a touch of reindeer fantasy including cone-shaped, red-nosed candy
holders. And as always, everyone had their picture taken with Santa!
We would like to thank all of our “tour guides,” storytellers, craft helpers and
Santa for making this a special occasion for the kids: Martha Brinker, Nicolina
DeFlavio Kelly, Sandee Farrell, Judy Fidazzo, Dick and Barbara Flock, Fran
Giron, Diane Hartland, John Herrmann, Denise and Matthew Horchar, Liz
Hoyson, Kitty Hricenak, Mary Lou Hugus, Pam Jennings, Philomena Lillie, Gene and Rachel Maselli, Karla Monsour,
Jan Musingo, Marjorie Nelson, Donna Orange, Alexa Pastor, Kelly and Katie Pedder, Keli Pennesi, Kassi Robosky,
Dawna Saunders, Jake, Sam and Teresa Shaffer, Kaylee Shepherd, Hanna Spinella, Jan Taylor and Kelli Yant.
Thank you to our Guests. Check the gallery of photos online at www.westmorelandculturaltrust.org. Thank you to
Trust Volunteers and Members, Chick-fil-A, First Commonwealth Bank, First National Bank, Keith Gjebre, DMD,
Hempfield Giant Eagle, McDowell Associates Insurance and the Delmont and Greensburg WalMart locations for their sponsorship and/or donations of stickers,
ribbon, cookie decorations, craft supplies, and so much more, all adding to the excitement.
WCT and Social Media
Finally taking the leap, Westmoreland Cultural Trust and The Palace Theatre
have jumped on the social media bandwagon, launching an active Facebook
site in November and now in our fifth month on Twitter. In that relatively
short time and as we go to press, we have about 975 Palace Facebook
fans, 250 WCT Facebook fans, and more than 50 Twitter followers.
If this sounds foreign to you, Facebook is an interactive ‘social’ website
(www.Facebook.com) for individuals and, more recently, organizations
and businesses. Founded on the campus of Harvard University in 2004,
Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the
world more open and connected. Though started as a tool for college-age
users, its fastest growing demographic is among internet users age 45+,
and it boasts more than 350 million users worldwide. Individuals’ pages
enlist ‘Friends’ whereas organizations and businesses acquire ‘Fans.’ Both
Friends and Fans refer to those who want to follow news and messages
posted on a specific Facebook account. Postings are much shorter than our
Palace emails, messages can be sent more frequently than our newsletters
and at no cost, and it is more engaging by its nature. Photos and video links
can be shared as well. We have one Facebook account for Westmoreland
Cultural Trust and one Facebook account for The Palace Theatre. Our Fans
can post their own messages and provide comments to ours on a ‘Wall’ or
message board, check out and RSVP to coming Events. The ‘Wall’ can be
viewed by all Fans on the site, hence the interactivity and fun of it all!
Twitter is accessible by internet or cell phone text messaging with posts
limited to 140 characters. Posts can include links to photos, video, and
websites. You can access our messages online without registering for
your own Twitter account at www.twitter.com/PalacePA. Creating your
own account, however, will allow you to easily follow multiple people or
organizations; in fact, you can see who we’re following, too!
We use Twitter and Facebook for postings a couple times each week (or
more) with relevant information, occasional behind the scenes info, and
content generally in a more casual format than Palace emails. We invite
you to follow us on Facebook and Twitter! To those already following us,
THANK YOU, and we look forward to hearing from you online!
Follow Us!
Thank Goodness It’s Summer!

A Message from the President
Happy New Year!
New year…new look to our newsletter…new offices…
But first and foremost, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to all of our members, volunteers, vendors and
Trust friends who, through their collective efforts, ensured the continued success of the Trust. Whether through your
membership, annual and year-end donations, much needed volunteer hours, or attendance at fundraisers and special
events, you have been an important supporter of the Trust.
And that is exactly why we have changed the name of our newsletter to Membership Matters. Our “members”
consist of all those who support the Trust whether financially or through time, talent, goods and services. We are so very
appreciative that you believe in what we do, understand our mission and want to be a part of our success. We hope to
create a newsletter just for you…to give you the information that you feel is important, that creates continued excitement
in what the Trust offers, to keep you abreast of our endeavors and the responsibility we feel to our members.
Trust activities and events have provided our County seat, community and the surrounding region with enhanced
economic and cultural growth. There is no better example of this than our most aspiring asset, The Palace Theatre. The
economic benefit includes the significant financial impact derived from the operations of The Palace Theatre. Mullin &
Lonergan Associates recently completed an Economic Impact Study demonstrating the value of The Palace Theatre to
Westmoreland County. The Study determined the positive yearly return to be $7.1 million! We believe this to be the
second largest tourism contribution in the county (behind only Idlewild Park) and the county’s largest cultural tourism
attraction.
Please visit us in our new offices. We have actually only moved to the 2nd floor of the Union Trust Building…102 N
Main St., Suite 232. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region needed a downtown presence and preferred a street
level location. We are pleased that we were able to help yet another non-profit find a new home to satisfy their needs!
As we do every year at this time, we are in the process of visiting our long-term strategic plan and reviewing our
current programs to ensure that we are on the right path for our growing company. Please feel free to call me with any
insights or thoughts you would like to share. I would love to hear them!
Again, we thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing and working with you in a year filled with an
abundance of good health, wealth and happiness. Visit us on line at www.westmorelandculturaltrust.org Find us on
