Gifts from Bethlehem
Olivewood Handcrafted from the Holy Land
A Traditional Art and Livelihood for Holy Land Christians
The handicrafts trade evolved as a cultural tradition of Christians in the Holy Land for centuries. This indigenous form of art has since become an industry of great importance to the local
people of the Holy Land who rely on it for livelihood, and to Christian pilgrims from all around
tile world whose holy pilgrimage can be memorialized for a lifetime in cherished olive wood or
mother of pearl souvenirs. The olive wood carving market is the major source of income in the
Bethlehem area. More than 60 percent of the income of the community in Bethlehem comes from
this work.
\
In recent years, however, the holy crafts trade has suffered many hardships due to social and
economical pressures. Because of a sharp fall in tourism and also as a result of diminishing
numbers of craftsmen who leave their traditional trade and emigrate due to the difficult conditions in their homeland, the Holy Land handicraft market is facing serious danger, and so is the
Christian community in the Land. Sixty years ago the Christians represented more than 28% of
the total population in the Holy Land, today they are less than 2%.The loss of Christians in the
land of Christianity's birth will represent a tragedy of immeasurable proportions for the billions
of Christians worldwide.
Thank you for your vital support for a Christian tradition and in protecting this very important
culture and industry.

November 4th, 2012 The Thirty - First Sunday in Ordinary Time 13 SENIOR NEWS YES When some people arrived for the usual 9:a m mass on last Thursday, they wondered what was going on and if they had interrupted some special service. Truth be told, we were blessed with the beautiful voices of the St. Anthony Choir. They sang the mass and then hosted and served a delicious break-
fast. While we were enjoying it, we were again gifted with their voices in concert. They sang not only hymns, but old favorites, show tunes, and even "Happy Birthday" to Sister Anthony, These are the same young men and women who hosted our Senior Prom two years ago,. Their kindness and dedication to our Senior group surprised no one. God bless these great kids along with Brother Joshua and Sister Anthony. It takes a lot of preparation, visits, phone calls etc. to successfully pull off something like this but they did, and we cannot thank them enough. Our November luncheon at the Irish Coffee Pub will be on Thursday the 15th at noon. There will be no meeting on that morning. Remember to pray for all those who are ill or fighting some kind of battle, and for their loving caregivers. Pray always for our military. God bless them and God bless America .. See you in church. Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered themselves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the inten-
tions of the Pope. The Holy Father gives us two prayer intentions each month, one a general intention and the other an intention for world mis-
sions. DAILY OFFERING PRAYER God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. With Mary, the mother of our Lord and of the Church, I pray especially for this month's intentions as proposed NOVEMBER x Ministers of the Gospel. That bishops, priests, and all ministers of the Gospel may bear the courageous witness of fidelity to the crucified and risen Lord. x Pilgrim Church. The primary purpose of the Rosary Altar Society is to praise and honor the Blessed Mother, to secure her patronage by the recitation of the Rosary and for the mutual spiritual benefit of all members throughout the world. They are entrusted with the care of the Altar;; the heart of every Catholic Church. Their duty is to provide and maintain a suitable dwelling place for Our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a labor of love;; no particular talents are required, just love and pride in the Church. They are a very active group, with meetings once a month. They run social functions, fundraisers and assist with Parish events. All ladies of the Parish are encouraged to become a part of this active Society devoted to Our Lady and our Parish. THE LEGION OF MARY The Legion of Mary is a worldwide Catholic organization that started in Dublin, Ireland, on September 7, 1921 and now has more than three million active members. We participate in the life of St. Matthew's Parish through Spiritual and Corporate Works of Mercy. We meet on Monday afternoon in the Blessed Mother Classroom. If you would like additional information about this very special ministry that unites us in Mary's love for Jesus, please contact Terry Sbashnig 631-254-9472. PS...if you have any prayer intentions, please email them to [email protected] God worked a spectacular miracle in Fatima, Portugal On October 13, 1917 to prove that Our Blessed Lady was appearing to three little shepherd children with an important message for our time. This miracle took place in front of 70,000 people including govern-
ment officials and newspaper reporters, all of whom testified that it actually happened. Two secular newspapers gave complete ac-
counts of the miracle as witnessed by their reporters. On November 9th at 4pm-9pm, and 5:15pm Mass , the World Apostolate of Fatima is bringing to our parish the National Pilgrim Virgin Statue of the USA. This beautiful Image of Our Lady of Fati-
ma was blessed by Pope Paul VI and given to our country by the Bishop of Fatima to carry the important message of Fatima to the United States. It is a message Pope John Paul II said is more important today than ever. All are invited and encouraged to come see this beautiful Statue of Our Lady of Fatima and learn Our Lady's message for obtaining peace and putting an end to abortion and the moral corruption that is afflicting our country. The Statue Custodian, William Sockey, will explain how the message of Fatima applies to our coun-
try today and discuss what we can do to earn the blessings on our country that Our Lady promised if her requests were fulfilled.
