TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ȱ
ȱ
Dear Friends –
Next Sunday marks the 15th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. We are planning a special observance. On
Sunday, September 11th, we will toll bells at the hours in which each of the airplanes crashed into the World
Trade Center, the Pentagon, and into the ground in Pennsylvania.
Then, in addition to the masses of the day, our Melita Ensemble featuring Juilliard-trained musicians, violinists Jocelyn Zhu, Mariella Haubs, and Caeli Smith and cellists Mitch Lyon and Ken Kubota, will present a 9/11
Memorial Service after the Sunday evening 5:15 pm mass. They will present “String Quartet in C Major, Op.
163 by Franz Schubert and “Cavatina” from String Quartet, Op. 130 by L. v. Beethoven. Please join us for this
special event.
During his visit to Ground Zero last September, Pope Francis said Ground Zero was a place where “we
shed tears” when thinking of those who were victims of “a mindset which knows only violence, hatred and revenge.” This is a place, he continued, where “we weep out of a sense of helplessness in the face of injustice, murder and the failure to settle conflicts through dialogue.”
Pope Francis said he hoped their presence together will be a powerful sign of their shared desire to be a
force for reconciliation in this community and throughout the world. He went on to warn against attempts to create “a rigid uniformity,” saying “we can and must build unity on the basis of our diversity of languages, cultures
and religions. Together, he continued, “we are called to say “no to every attempt to impose uniformity and “yes”
to a diversity accepted and reconciled.” However, he pointed out that this can only happen if we uproot from our
hearts all feelings of hatred, vengeance and resentment.
Let us commend our prayers and hope for peace in our world, free from terrorism and hatred to Saint
Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
Peace – Father Gil

The Leopard
September 20, 6:30 - 8:30 PM—Parish Center
Set in the 1860s, The Leopard tells the spellbinding story of
a decadent, dying Sicilian aristocracy threatened by the approaching forces of democracy and revolution. The dramatic
sweep and richness of observation, the seamless intertwining
of public and private worlds, and the grasp of human frailty
imbue. The Leopard with its particular melancholy beauty
and power, and place it among the greatest historical novels
of our time.

While society prizes what is “normal,” the soul years for
what is creative, unusual and different. In crossing barriers
and borders, the soul re-experiences what it means to be
alive; it reminds itself of its orientation to liveliness and its
resistance to uniformity. All are welcome to this event: poetry writers, poetry lovers and the poetry curious.

Religious Education Registration 2016-2017
Come and See
Special for Non-Catholics
If you are one of the many non-Catholics who visit St. Paul’s
and feel at home here, perhaps it's time to consider becoming a
full member of our Roman Catholic community. Next week
we will be starting an inquiry group to help people explore the
possibility of becoming Catholic at St. Paul’s. Pick up one of
the fliers in the rack near the church entrance, with the title “Come and See.”
For more information, please
get in touch with Father Robert Collins, SJ at
[email protected] or call (212)-265-3495,
ext. 339
Still time to register!
We are accepting late registration for religious education until
September 11th however, applications will be processed as space
permits and placement is NOT GUARANTEED.
Religious Education for Children Ages 3-5
St. Paul’s offers a wonderful program for three-to-five year old
children called the “Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.” The Catechesis began in Italy and has spread across the United States and
is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an "atrium,"
a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful
materials that they work with independently and in small groups.
The program is offered on Sunday mornings from 9:45 - 11:30am
from September - May. Please contact Director of Religious Education Hernan Sanchez at 212-265-3495 x341 to register.
First day of classes
On September 18th after the 10:00am mass, we are having the
opening of school year orientation meeting in the church during
this time the students will meet their teachers, find out the class
they have been enrolled and classroom.
All students and parents are asked to gather in the front of the
Church to meet their teachers.
Catechetical Sunday and Commissioning of our Catequists
This year Catechetical Sunday, September 18th will focus on the
theme, “Prayer: The Faith Prayed.” Here at St. Paul the Apostle,
20 members of our community have been delegated to teach our
children and will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry on September 25th. We want to congratulate them for being
witness to the Gospel as well as to rededicating themselves to this
mission as a faith community.
Few Co-teachers for Religious Education Needed for
2016-2017
Have you thought about being a catechist, but have never given it
a try? Would you like to join us in sharing your Catholic faith
with the children of St. Paul’s parish? Are you willing to commit
yourself to be present with your students for classes from September to May? However, there is some latitude for your personal
schedule because you will be sharing the teaching responsibility
with another teacher for the 30 Sunday’s sessions scheduled during the school year from 11:00-12:30 PM. The heart of our program is the dedication of our catechists.
Co-teachers will be needed in the fall for the
following classes:
Pre-communion class (1st & 2nd graders);
Post-Communion class (3rd, 4th & 5th graders)
Training and ongoing support are provided with opportunities for
personal spiritual growth. If you feel serious about this calling and
ministry, please contact me as soon as possible. The interview
process for catechist is going on now.
Vincentians of St. Paul the Apostle
Our mission is to help one another grow in faith by
encountering Christ in each other through our service to those in need.

committee. Please consider this important ministry to our youth.
If you have a serious interest, call Hernán Sánchez in the Religious Education Office 212-265-3495, extension 341
or E-mail: [email protected].
It is certainly a help for all of our children. We hope it will be a

“Often my mind is served with the idea of a future development of our holy faith in this country. Our people
are capable of great enthusiasm, & if once this is turned
into the right channel, it must & will produce effects
worthy of our faith & our spiritual Mother the Church.
Our people are young, & not like Europeans, & were
they filled with a lively faith, new ages of faith would
spring up on this continent.”

- Padre Gil
