FROM THE DESK OF
FATHER DAVIS:
id you know that we are within a year or two of some
major anniversary celebrations in our community? In the
Fall of 2015, Saint Theresa Catholic School will begin its 90th
year of operation, educating the Catholic children from the
Coral Gables area, serving as one of the oldest and largest
Catholic grade schools in the Archdiocese of Miami. In April of
2016, the Church of the Little Flower will celebrate its 90th
anniversary of its founding, becoming the second oldest parish
in Miami-Dade County. And then, on December 8th of 2017, the
original church of our parish, now Comber Hall, will celebrate
the 90th anniversary of its ecclesiastical and liturgical
dedication. Wow! 90 years! Many celebrations, special events,
historical recognition ceremonies, Galas, and designations will
surely be highlights of these anniversary years. If you would like
to serve on the 90th anniversary committee, we are currently
gathering names of people who will assist the members of our
Parish Council as we begin to chart a course for the special
occasions soon to take shape in our community. We would
welcome your input.
I am happy to announce that we are approaching a total of
$211,000 in pledges and contributions to this year’s ABCD. Our
archdiocesan goal, as I mentioned before, is $236,000. So, we
still have a little ways to go to meet our goal. Nevertheless,
allow me to thank profusely all those who have lovingly
involved themselves in this very important annual campaign.
Together we are strong in the Lord! Those who have not yet
made a pledge are invited to join us in solidarity as we seek to
achieve our goal. A full report will be given, as soon as the
complete printout of data comes to my office.
I am pleased to also report that we are nearly finished with
the second floor renovation of the office building. Following the
water damage of this past summer, an entire half of the second
floor had to be gutted, rebuilt, and refurnished, including airconditioning duct work, and wiring. All is just about in tip top
shape, now, as we await the arrival of some new furnishings and
the installation of new phones and computers. The renovated
space will provide us a new conference room and four new
offices. As part of the renovation, we have contracted
Windstream, a telecommunications company, to install new
computers, phones, and a secure network server for use by the
fifteen members of our professional staff.
All these
enhancements to the second floor are being completely covered
by the insurance disbursement which has come to us from the
evaluation done by the insurance adjuster. It has been an
uncomfortable and stressful past few months as this project has
gradually taken shape. Yet, we’re almost there! We’ll soon have
an “open house” to show you the results.
With the support of the Finance Council, last year’s ABCD
overage which came back to Little Flower was designated to
address the pressing need of the window replacement project at
the rectory house. Thankfully, the new windows have assured
the elimination of leaks, water damage, unwanted wind flow,
bugs, and even road noise. What a difference! A long overdue
project is now finally done. Later this spring, before Easter, a
recently received bequeath will have paid for the exterior
painting of the rectory house. The City of Coral Gables asked
that it be done as part of the permitting of the windows.
Addressing long-deferred maintenance, these enhancements
will have addressed the needs of the rectory house for years to
come.
A great Lenten season is soon to begin. Let’s prepare to
deepen our walk with Christ!

Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.
— Leviticus 19:2b
J
BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE
esus’ words in today’s Gospel continue to contrast
the Jewish law and practice with the practice of
the followers of Jesus. Today’s Gospel continues with
slight variations the formulation: “You have heard . .
.” and “What I say to you is . . .” The old laws of
retaliation were once created to soften the severe
and vengeful retaliations common among the
peoples that surrounded the struggling people of
God. The would-be followers of Jesus again feel
surrounded by people bent on retaliation. So
Matthew presents Jesus, who asks his followers not
only not to retaliate at all but to “turn the other
cheek.”
He asks that his listeners give the one who asks
more than he or she seeks. Jesus asks us to love and
pray for those of our home country and the alien,
the ones who love us and the ones who hate us.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
live oil looms large in the vocabulary of baptism.
There are other oils in the pantry closet, from
grapeseed to safflower to canola, but only olives yield the
proper meanings. Olives don’t just happen; they are
cultivated, nurtured, pruned, and fussed over; they are a
sign of human and divine cooperation. Olives can thrive
in poor soil, but they cannot survive without human
ingenuity, planting shoots and pruning branches. They
can’t be popped from a tree and munched like apples:
they are inedible without long curing; neither do they
yield their oil to hand pressure alone, but only to huge
stone mills. Abundant patience is needed as sediment
sinks to the bottom of storage barrels and pure oil rises
to the surface.
Olive oil is a byproduct of peace: war keeps
harvesters, planters, and pruners within city walls and
turns millers into soldiers. To obtain oil from olives you
need vast measures of hope, patience, faith, and
ingenuity. Olive oil is a sign of God’s bounty and the way
we human beings collaborate with God to bring about
impossibly wonderful results. It is creation at its finest.
Some people give chocolate eggs for Easter; perhaps
olive oil is a more appropriate gift!

INTENCIONES DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO PARA EL MES DE FEBRERO
“Son of God” Opening Weekend
Just in time for the beginning
of Lent, the movie “Son of
God” - from the same
producers of the highly
acclaimed mini-series, “The
Bible,” which aired on the
History Channel last year - is
set to open nationwide later
this week. Thanks to the
generosity of an Archdiosan
donor, 12,000 tickets have
made available free of charge
to parishes and schools throughout the Archdiocese for this opening
weekend.
COTLF has tickets available for a showing of “Son of God” on Sunday,
March 2nd at 1pm in the Paragon Coconut Grove Theatre. Only a
limited number of tickets are available and they will be distributed on a
first-come, first-served basis. Please contact Jorge Santibáñez at
the Parish Office to get your tickets!

FR. MARTIN TO OFFER LENTEN LECTURE SERIES
Each Wednesday night during Lent, Father Martin will be
offering a Lenten lecture on a variety of spiritual topics
designed to encourage us all to enter into the spirit of
Lenten conversion. Beginning on March 12th, which is the
Wednesday after Ash Wednesday, there will be a weekly
lecture offered in Comber Hall at 7:30pm. All are welcome
to attend, reflect, and journey toward renewal.
NEW STAFF MEMBER HIRED
We are pleased to announce the hiring of
Mark Landia, former Advancement Director at
Archbishop Carroll High School, and former
Development Director at Saint Jerome Church,
as our new Resource Officer for
Communications and Protocol. Mark will be
assisting us in many varied ways. As our
primary communications officer, he will be
leading our marketing and public relations
initiatives, staffing the information booth, soon
to be set up at the front door of church on the
weekends. He will also be overseeing
pilgrimages, special events, the operation of
Comber Hall, tours of the church, and the 90th
anniversary committees. Mark will begin with

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Each Friday during Lent, the

6:00pm in Spanish, and 7pm in
English. All are welcome to join us
as we journey with Jesus and enter
into the spirit of this Holy season.
MUSIC MINISTRY AT 7:00 PM MASS
As Parish Council discerns the possibility of
merging the 5:30pm and 7:00pm Masses into a
new Sunday evening Mass timeslot geared
toward the youth of our parish, we are
temporarily without music at the current
Sunday night 7:00pm Mass. In the meantime,
the parish is currently in search of volunteer
guitarists and musicians to step forward to
provide liturgical music at the Sunday night
7pm Mass. If interested, please contact the
parish office for an appointment with our
Music Director.
LENTEN REGULATIONS
As we get ready for Lent, it’s a good thing to
begin to plan our annual penitential practices.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are both
days of ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT products
for all those who are 14-years of age or older.
These days are also days of FAST for those

smaller ones not equal to the one main meal,
and eating nothing in between meals. ALL

“ULTREYA” THIS FRIDAY
The Spanish word "Ultreya" means
"onward". It was a shout of enthusiasm
by the first pilgrimage to the Shrine of
Saint James of Compostela. And so we use that
term to mean that which encourages all of us who
attend the Ultreya to continue, to persevere in our
Christian life as apostles for Jesus Christ. The
purpose of the Ultreya is to keep the spirit and
friendship of a Cursillo ongoing in order that it
may be a motivating force for all of us to live the
ideal and to evangelize. Ultreya is the place where
friendships are built within the larger community.
The Ultreya in its totality is the sharing of our
Christian life.
Our brother Cursillista, Joe Noriega, from Good
Shepherd Catholic Church will be the witness
speaker.
All are welcome to join us at St John Neumann,
12175 SW 107 Ave at 7:00pm this Friday, February

VBS 2014: KidVid Cinema
New to this year’s VBS Program is a station called
KidVid Cinema. This station doesn’t just bring
Scripture to life - it IS real life! At KidVid Cinema, each
day’s Bible Point is reinforced through the introduction
of the story of an actual boy or girl from around the
world sharing a little about their own lives and how
they’ve come to discover that Jesus loves them.
Campers will also be encouraged to “Watch for God” as
they visit this station and come to see God in all things
around them.
A sponsorship gift of $3,000 is available for KidVid
Cinema at VBS 2014. For more information about

O DOMINGO DEL
TIEMPO ORDINARIO
23 DE FEBRERO DE 2014
Sean santos, porque yo, el Señor, soy santo.
— Levítico 19:2b
L
odian.
A
