A WORD FROM
Less pain, less risk, quicker recovery
Telling our story to
the community we
serve is important.
I hope you have
had the opportunity to see our new
television commercials and newspaper ads featuring our associates.
We developed our stories for
these pieces from the inside out.
We gathered input from physicians, nursing leaders, clinical staff
and our community. They reminded us that our 100-year history
in this community has given us a
strong foundation. Yet we deliver
on the highest level of medical
excellence. For this reason, our
community recognizes and chooses
our healing ministry for both their
basic and complex healthcare
needs.
In this issue of Life Stories Home
Edition, I am pleased to announce
that Lourdes has opened Kentucky’s
first and only twin hybrid operating
rooms. The vision and passion of
our cardiovascular team led us to
bring this life-saving technology to
our patients and to the region. Saving precious minutes and precious
lives is the essence of our healing
ministry. We also are happy to offer
you some practical stories that can
help you keep this summer safe
and enjoyable for your family.
I thank you in advance for reviewing our magazine and gaining
a greater understanding of our sacred mission, as well as allowing us
to be part of your LifeStories.
CATHETERIZATION
THROUGH THE WRIST
WHILE ATTENDING A HORSE SHOW IN
Alabama, Bunny Crayne had two heart attacks
and didn’t know it. “I was short of breath,” she
recalls. “I had heartburn and a little pinch in
my chest, but I’m good at denial.” When she
returned to Paducah she saw her doctor, who
sent her to see Lourdes cardiologist David
Hogancamp, M.D. When Dr. Hogancamp
read her EKG he said, “I think you should

have a heart catheterization now.”
Cardiologist
Fortunately Crayne was a good candidate
for a new procedure, transradial catheterization.
“Traditionally, heart catheterizations have been performed by accessing the femoral artery via the groin,” says Dr. Hogancamp. “Bleeding
in this area can be difficult to detect and manage effectively, so the
risk of a bleeding complication, especially if the patient has received
blood thinners, is considerable. In a transradial catheterization, the
radial artery is accessed via the wrist. This has the advantage that any
bleeding is easier to see and treat effectively, so there are fewer
complications. In addition, bed rest after the procedure is not needed;
therefore, patient satisfaction is higher.”
That was the case with
Bunny Crayne, who says
she awoke “with a little hole
in my arm” after having a
stent inserted in her
blocked artery and went
home the next day feeling
fine. “I didn’t hurt when
I came in,” she sums up,
“and I didn’t hurt when I
went out.”

words of Omid H. Javadi,
M.D., “takes every opportunity to incorporate every
surgical advantage”—in
this case the tiny balloons
used in cath labs to open a
stent in a blocked artery.
Vascular surgeons have
also developed less invasive
procedures requiring the
high-quality imaging
available in a hybrid
OR. “Treating an aortic
aneurysm (a bulging artery) less invasively means
fewer morbidities and
shorter stays,” says Daniel
F. Jung, D.O. For the interventional cardiologist, says
David Hogancamp, M.D.,
the new OR saves precious
time. “Usually an angiogram done on a patient
who has had a heart attack
will find something that requires both stenting and
surgery,” he explains. “Not
having to move the patient
from the cath lab to the
OR saves time, and time
is muscle.”
Surgical procedures
that can be performed in
the new OR include:

“Classic cardiac surgery is
downsizing,” explains cardiothoracic surgeon James
P. O’Rourke, M.D. “It’s
being done through
smaller incisions.” In openheart surgery for a calcified
heart valve, for example, a
large incision exposes the
patient’s heart while a
heart-lung machine keeps
the blood flowing. But only
a small incision in the
groin is needed to perform
the same surgery without
opening the chest, offering
a new option to patients
who have been considered
too weak to survive the
stress of open-heart surgery.
“By threading tiny
catheters through an incision in the groin,” says Dr.
O’Rourke, “we can replace
a calcified heart valve without opening the chest. The
patient’s heart never stops.”
The catheter permits a new
valve to be inserted in the
old one on the end of a

Paducah Man Is
Glad His Doctor
Sent Him to a Heart

Lourdes...
Surgery Prevented
Congestive
Heart Failure
SEVENTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD RICHARD ALLCOCK
is back to work after having open-heart surgery at Lourdes.
Cardiothoracic surgeon James P. O’Rourke, M.D., replaced
two leaking valves in Allcock’s heart, and corrected an
irregular heartbeat caused by a severely leaking mitral valve.
For years Allcock has been making the trip to his
workshop, which is down the hill from his house, six
times a day. Recently he started feeling weak, tired and
short of breath before going a hundred feet. Fortunately,
he was already seeing a specialist.
When Allcock’s primary care physician detected a
heart murmur in 1980, he told him it could someday
require surgery, and eventually he sent him to a
cardiologist at Lourdes specializing in valvular heart
disease, Mark D. Lineberry, M.D. Two years ago, after
carefully monitoring Allcock’s condition, Dr. Lineberry
told him he needed surgery in order to avoid
developing congestive heart failure.
“Don’t wait for symptoms
to appear—by then
it may be too late.”
How Specialists Make A Difference
Allcock, who was hesitant, recalls what Dr.
O’Rourke said when he was sent to see him: “Let me
tell you about this surgery. I want to do it, the Lord
wants to do it, and you want to do it. So let’s do it.”
Today, Allcock reports, his heart is “purring like a
kitten.”
His doctor did the right thing by sending him to a
specialist. “Too many primary care physicians wait until
symptoms of valvular heart disease appear,” says
Dr. O’Rourke. “In the meantime the heart, while it’s
struggling with the disease, enlarges, thickens and
weakens.”
Dr. O'Rourke continued, “Anyone who has valvular
pathology like a heart murmur should see a cardiologist
specializing in valvular disease. Don’t wait for symptoms
to appear—by then it may be too late.”

GINGER AMES RECENTLY HAD CERVICAL
spine surgery at Lourdes Hospital. After an overnight
hospital stay, she went home pain-free, wearing a
simple collar to stabilize her neck vertebrae during
the healing process.
Ames says she had suffered from neck pain for
years, but last December she woke up with “the most
excruciating ‘crick in my neck’ that ran down both
arms—miserable pain that never went away.” Ames
works in medical sales in western Kentucky and visits
many medical offices. When a visit to the chiropractor
brought no relief, she decided to call on a friend
and colleague at Dr. Allan Gocio’s office. Within
48 hours, she had seen the surgeon and had an MRI.
Ames had a badly ruptured disk in her neck. She
would need a microdiskectomy: delicate surgery to
remove the torn cushion between two vertebrae and
fuse them afterward. Fortunately one of Dr. Gocio’s
specialties is minimally invasive spine
surgery, so he was able to operate
through a tiny incision in the front
of her neck.

Davis had become increasingly bowlegged, but not from riding horses. He

he’d be in tears at night from the pain in

Davis sought help from a family

certified orthopaedic surgeon at Lourdes, who had performed hip replacement surgery for him a year earlier. “I told him he needed
to have both knees replaced,” Dr. DeWeese says. “The
cartilage was worn down to the bone.”
On December 20 of last year Dr. DeWeese replaced
Davis’ worn-out knees with ceramic oxide-coated stainless
steel joints made to last a lifetime. Davis’ recovery was virtually painless, he reports. By Christmas he was walking with a
cane, and now he’s back to enjoying life on

Because of its comprehensive approach to

CHARLES “CHETT” BADGER TRAVeled far from his birthplace in Maine.
At the Dupont labs in Memphis he met
his wife, Julia, then went with her to
Richland, WA, where he refined plutonium for the Manhattan Project. After
the war he started a construction company in Illinois. Finally he settled in
Grand Rivers, where he ran the Badgett

But after Badger retired he was immobilized at home by a broken hip and shoulder, and the onset of Parkinson’s. A private

“His medical condition
had to be continually
checked and his medications adjusted.
He had a series of problems, and they responded every time. His nurse, Theresa
Medlin, was wonderful.” Badger’s favorite
personal caregiver was Athena Crunican.
“He perked up and joked with her,” says
his son. “They developed an admiration
for each other.”
Charles Badger passed away exactly
one year after Julia, in the same house.
“Because his physician started him early

had superb care.”

JUST ASK
Christina Rushing
BECAUSE HER REGULAR DOCTOR WAS OUT OF
town, college student Christina Rushing decided to see an
urgent care doctor at Lourdes Medical Pavilion about the pains
she’d been having in her legs. “I thought I could walk them
off,” she says, “but they kept getting worse.” She was given a
prescription for pain medication, which she filled at Paducah
Pharmacy located in the Pavilion and had a blood workup
done the same day at the Pavilion’s clinical laboratory.
When the results came back, they showed the pains
were caused by a blood clot in her leg, a potentially lifethreatening condition.
Same Day Diagnostics
“As is often the case, this patient had a diagnostic test
scheduled and completed the same day as her physician visit,”
says Vice President of Professional Services Jeff Jones.
“Extending the healing ministry of Jesus through patientcentered care is at the forefront of everything we do,” he
stresses. “The Lourdes Medical Pavilion provides excellent
care in a convenient outpatient setting by offering a full line of
diagnostic services. Each patient is treated like family, and
coordination of care is seamless throughout the building.”
Christina Rushing was given an anti-clotting medication
during regular visits to the Pavilion, where her blood could be
tested to establish the right dose, and the pain stopped. In
addition, the blood work has now identified the blood
deficiency that caused the clot.
“It’s a nice place to go,” she says of Lourdes Medical
Pavilion. “It’s all in one building.”
“We at the Lourdes Medical Pavilion understand that your
time is very valuable,” says Jones, “and that is why we provide a
comprehensive array of outpatient diagnostic services in
a single location.”

Keeping Summer
Safe & Fun
Summer is a time for family fun. It’s also
the time when accidents among children
increase. Keep these important safety tips
from Paducah Pediatrics in mind.
3Buckle Up
Make sure car seats are properly installed and tight.
Remember, children under the age of eight must
ride in a booster seat, and no child under 12 should
ever ride in the front seat.
3Supervise Lawn Work
Keep children away from lawn equipment.
No child under 12 should operate a mower.
3Wear Helmets
Whether biking, skateboarding or rollerblading,
children should always wear helmets. Knee and
elbow pads are also highly recommended.
3Prevent Use of Motor Vehicles
ATVs and motorcycles should be off limits to minors.
3Keep Chemicals Out of Reach
Keep toxic products out of reach of children
and post the poison control number, 1-800-222-1222,
in your home.
3Keep Firearms Safe
If you must have a gun
in the house, keep
ammunition and guns
stored in separate
locked locations. Gun
trigger locks are also
recommended to protect
curious children.

Community members are
invited to enroll in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer
Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3)
on November 15-17 at
Lourdes in the Borders
Community Room. Hours
for enrollment are Nov 15th:
12pm-6pm, Nov 16th: 7am11am and Nov 17th: 9am12pm.
“We are looking for
300,000 people nationwide
to support cancer research by
participating in this historic
study,” says Stephanie Elder
of the ACS. “We need men
and women 30-65 years old
who have never had cancer.
Each will fill out a survey,
their waist will be measured,
and a blood sample will be
drawn. Participants will receive follow-up surveys at
home and a yearly newsletter
about ongoing research.”
It seemed fitting for Lourdes to host CPS-3 during The
Great American Smokeout,
which challenges smokers to
quit for one day: CPS-1, done
in the 1950s, linked tobacco
use to cancer. Information on
smoking cessation will be
available, and participants
will be given custom-made
stickers to wear throughout
the day supporting the
Smokeout.
The Incredible Colon, an
oversized, inflatable exhibit,
finished its tour of western
Kentucky on March 21 at
Lourdes. 600 people toured
the exhibit, designed to
educate the public about
colorectal cancer.
