From Rabbi
Michael Pont
THIS YEAR’S JOURNAL DINNER DANCE
HONOREES
Every other year we honor the past president and other
outstanding individuals who lend their talent and energy to help make MJC a wonderful congregation. The
2015 Journal Dinner Dance was on May 31st. It was
fabulous, and Natalie and I were proud to be there to
celebrate three great people. Below is the tribute letter I
wrote, which appeared in the journal. I tried to express
my appreciation of Jay, Lori, and Howie, for all they’ve
done and continue to do for MJC.
I wish everyone a great summer!!
Rabbi Pont
This year’s honorees each work tirelessly for MJC.
I will always be grateful to Jay Solomon, for his instrumental role as I began my career as rabbi of the congregation. Along with David Green, Jay was a key member
of the Negotiating Committee. Not only did Jay work
out all of the details of my first contract in a way that
was satisfying to all, but he did so in a mentschlich way.
As EVP my first year, Jay helped me to get acclimated
and ultimately to have a successful beginning.
When Jay was president, I admired his professional
manner in running meetings, be they of the Executive
Board, Board of Trustees, committees, or with individuals. He was always clear and concise in his explanations, and allowed everyone to voice their opinions.
I also have great respect for Jay on a personal level.
As I got to know him, I became aware of Jay’s struggles
with failing eyesight and other health issues. He took
these challenges in stride, continuing to serve MJC as
a strong leader.
Maimonides, the medieval Jewish scholar par excellence, wrote, “The breath of school children is the reason for the world’s existence.” Great synagogues make
sure that its young people are engaged, and at MJC we
invest heavily in our children. In addition to terrific
schools, our Youth Department is among the best! Our
four youth groups meet the needs of young people ages
5-18. In particular, Marlboro USY is regularly voted as
a top chapter in Hagalil Region.
None of this happens by itself - it takes dedication. As
Youth Director for the past thirteen years, Lori Solomon
has grown each group with enthusiasm and love. I
know this not only as the rabbi, but as the father of
three children, each of whom enjoys their group’s activities. Lori has guided my son Gabe, now seventeen, to
be a leader on the regional Executive Board. The youth
of MJC have stronger Jewish identities and will mature
into active Jewish adults, thanks in large part to Lori
Solomon.
Every organization, be it a school, a corporation, or a
synagogue, cannot function unless its facilities are in
good working condition. Maintaining and improving
upon MJC’s two buildings requires constant attention
and creative thinking. In this light we are blessed to
have Howie Topal. He sits on the House Committee,
bringing humor and a positive spirit to what can be a
thankless job. He donates his time and energy in the
office, helping the staff in their work.
I am personally grateful to Howie for helping me and
my family in the midst of Super Storm Sandy. MJC
purchased a generator for the rabbi’s residence, but I
had no idea how to use it. I called Howie and asked for
help; he came over immediately and showed me what to
do. Thanks Howie!
Mazel tov to Jay, Lori, Howie, and to their families, and
may each of you go from strength to strength!
Shalom,
Rabbi Pont

Congregation Ohev Shalom
From Cantor
Wayne Krieger
Shimon Peres: “...The Jewish people are small in number
and great in concept. Judaism was the first example of a
rebellion of the people. It started with the exodus from the
house of slaves and a journey to the Promised Land. That
journey is not yet over. There are still houses of slavery, and
we are still engaged in making the Promised Land an island
of promise. Judaism started with “Briat HaOlam” [Genesis]
and it continues with “Tikkun Olam” [Healing the World].
In my judgment, Judaism is intrinsically never satisfied with
the way things are, but aiming to improve endlessly.”
My oldest daughter Yael and her husband Josh gave birth
to a baby boy named Zohar Yisrael after my father Zelig.
You can see the big sister and baby brother in Temple
Topics. Even though I wasn’t well enough to attend
the Brit Milah, the whole family will visit us on June
28th. Also this month my daughter Kochava returned
home after another successful year at the University of
Hartford. My middle daughter Ronit is enjoying her
work at Laz and her husband Jason is thriving as an
accountant at Bob’s furniture store in West Hartford.

From the President
Jeff Katz
As the end of my first year as President is approaching, I
have been reflecting on the past year. All in all, I think it
was a good year and we accomplished many good things.
There is always more to do as improvement should be a
constant goal.
Several capital improvements have been made to our
buildings during the year. We just opened up our new
playground equipment at the Chai Building. The previous equipment was old and needed some changes due
to safety code. We also added new rubber pieces to level
off the ground. You may also notice a new fenced in area
jutting out from the playground. This will be used as a
grass field for the kids to play. This area needs to be leveled off and seeded, and this will be done shortly.
Many security enhancements have been made to both
buildings. Last year we received a Homeland Security
grant which enabled us to make some major improvements. These will be finalized over the summer. Look
for more detail on these improvements in an update in
the fall.
These are in addition to the new furnaces in the Chai
Building and new carpet in the catering wing of the
main building. There are many other improvements in
the works; some necessary for safety and some cosmetic.
All of these changes have been made within the constraints of our budget, the MJC funds, and donations.
In early June, the proposed budget for next year will
be presented to the congregation. Special thanks to Len
Whitman, Steve Landau, and the rest of the Finance
Committee for creating a well thought out and balanced
budget in a time of declining revenue. The Committee
continues to look to the future to insure our financial
stability.
I am fortunate to have a strong Executive Committee to
help run the Synagogue. These volunteers devote much
of their time and energy to make the Marlboro Jewish
Center a better place. Thank you to Wayne Kaufman,
Neil Kipnis, Barry Lurie, Liz Reingold, Jeff Wolf, and
Len Whitman.
I especially want to thank two people whose terms on
the Executive Committee expire on June 30. Andrea
Barnett (VP of Ritual) and Wayne Sherman (VP of
Education) have demonstrated a steady hand in running their areas. I appreciate their logical points of view,
always presented in a professional and respectful manner. They are committed to MJC and will continue to
serve as Trustees on next year’s Board.
There are three people who I rely upon on a regular
basis for advice and support. Rhonda Eiger, Rabbi Pont,
and Bonnie Komito always have the best interests of
MJC in mind and help to make my job easier. I appreciate all you do and look forward to another great year
working with you.
I wish you and your families a wonderful and enjoyable
summer. As always, I am available if you would like to
discuss any issues.
L’Shalom

High Hebrew High - The Year In Review
It has been another good year of engaging discussion,
camaraderie, and of course good food for the juniors
and seniors of HHH! We started out with a meeting
in the Sukkah at MJC in October. The students helped
to decorate the Sukkah, hanging up Preschool art, and
we talked about topics they’d like to explore in the eight
sessions.
In December we met with a nineteen year old from
Monmouth who made Aliyah to Israel to serve in the
Israel Defense Forces. This Lone Soldier (who lives
without family in Israel) described his service in Gaza
during the summer war, and how fellow soldiers looked
out for him. The students were impressed with his
dedication to Israel and asked questions.
January was College Night! Graduates from HHH
returned for a visit to talk about their experiences on
campus. Also, Nadine Green of the College Advisory
Network visited and enlightened us about choosing the
right school and the application process.
We were snowed out in February but got back on track
with three spring sessions. Jason Scott from the class
joined two other volunteers for the Marlboro First Aid
Squad, describing their experiences. Finally, on May 11th
the group met with representatives from the Marlboro
Alliance, who discussed the problem of addictions.
On May 29th, the seniors each spoke
during the graduation Shabbat dinner. These fourteen teens each
shared their hopes for the future,
and offered appreciation of MJC for
their Jewish studies. It was a great
night, and I will definitely miss
them next year!
I want to thank Lissette Allen for
all of her help with HHH – she’s
the best!
If you are interested in HHH, contact me at [email protected].
Shalom,
Rabbi Pont

From The
Executive
Director
Bonnie Komito
This month’s parashot move us through the leadership spectrum of Moses, Aaron and Miriam, as the Israelites prepare to
move on from the wilderness of Sinai. There are instructions
about building and dismantling the Tabernacle, requirements
were set for sacred tasks, and people complied and complained. There are even lessons about compassion, serving
through rebellion, and when to keep silent. Moses was commanded by God to communicate his vision, that is to say he
got his leadership position by divine power. Aaron was more
of a “man of the people,” a lover of peace and a conciliator
among individuals. Miriam’s role was one of deed or action,
teaching people to sing in moments of triumph. Leadership
in the desert involved dedication to the Temple, problem solving, upholding rituals, conducting life cycles and succession
plans. It was all remarkably similar to synagogue leadership
and transitions in the twenty-first century!
15 years, 12 years and 8 years of service to this synagogue! I
can’t imagine a more resourceful and helpful team to accomplish the daily business of the shul and I am grateful for the
camaraderie and work ethic that they share. I would also
like to recognize the professional team at the Chai Building –
Rene Kipnis, Rabbi Ron Koas and Lori Solomon, along with
Bonnie Silverman, Barbara Becker, Lissette Allen, and all
the teachers and assistants that touch the lives of the younger
members of MJC. And a special thank you to Dina Dela
Cruz, the overseer of all synagogue properties, which see
maintains with the devotion mandated for the care of sacred
space. A lot can be said for an institution that is able to keep
such a dedicated team together through the decades.
The shift of leadership at MJC from one Board of Trustees
culminates with the Installation of new Officers and Trustees
which takes place in June. At the same time, June marks the
end of the fiscal year and the acceptance of a new synagogue
budget by the congregation. It must be just a coincidence that
the Torah is aligned to the transitions of the synagogue year,
or maybe it’s just besheirt.
The congregation values the membership and commitment
of every congregant and the work of each volunteer. It is
the combined effort of the congregation, the leadership, the
clergy and the staff that create the entity that is recognized
from within, as well as outside, that denotes MJC as a vibrant
and strong synagogue. And so, “as a tree is known by its fruit,
so man by his works,” and the synagogue by those who come
together to make it a warm and spiritual home.
Two officers will be finishing their respective terms of office
on the MJC Executive Committee. Todah Rabah to Andrea
Barnett, Ritual VP, for her dedication and knowledge of all
things that have to do with the religious practices of MJC.
Thank you to Wayne Sherman, Education VP, for always
sharing his educational and administrative expertise. We also
appreciate the service of outgoing Board of Trustees, John
Gutman, Ruth Nadler, Howie Topal, Shelly Rogers and Mike
Ringel. Their joint efforts strengthen the fabric of this congregation and uphold the link in the chain for future leaders.
Yasher Koach to Jeff Katz, our MJC President, Rhonda Eiger,
EVP, and the dedicated officers, trustees and volunteers who
will continue in their positions, and of course to our outstanding clergy, Rabbi Pont and Cantor Krieger.
I would personally like to thank the staff of the Synagogue
building for their hard work and commitment to MJC.
Beth Josephs, Dale Mesmer, Reba Schneiderman and Patty
Dorfschneider bring skill, dedication, humor and loyalty to
their positions. They have logged in respectively 12 years,
“As a tree is known by its fruit, so man by his works.” – The
Talmud
In Siddur Hadash, the Shabbat Prayer Book used at MJC,
there are special passages to honor those who serve and for
installation of boards. As we end a meaningful year at MJC
and look forward to the next, these two have significance:
Today we rededicate ourselves to continue to serve, to pursue those
important tasks which lie before us.
We are grateful for the opportunity of serving (and belonging); for
we ourselves have been enriched. Our lives have been expanded;
our horizons have been broadened; our sense of purpose has been
heightened.
May the Lord who blessed our ancestors, and who, in every generation, has inspired men and women to lead our people, now
bless our newly installed leaders. May they guide us from strength
to strength.
Thank you for a good year! Relax and enjoy the summer!

Israel Affairs
This month I am using this column to review all the programs that the IAC ran since September 2014. Here are the
major events for the year, in chronological order.
Our ongoing Israel at the Movies program on Sunday
nights, monthly from September through May, featured
nine evenings of the latest in films made in Israel, at no
charge for members. How many of the following did you
see? Aliyah. Bethlehem, Aviva My Love, Cupcakes, A Place
in Heaven, Farewell Baghdad, Hunting Elephants, The
Ballad of the Weeping Spring and Kadosh. We averaged
thirty-five to forty-five people for each showing.
August
We initiated and coordinated the Emergency Fund drive for
Israel during the rocket attacks. Through your donations
and contributions from restricted use MJC Gift Funds, we
sent $10,500 in late September for portable bomb shelters,
operating the Sderot indoor playground/bomb shelter 24x7
and providing the latest equipment to firefighters.
October
Our program with the Jewish National Fund partner
LOTEM – “Making Nature Accessible” to the physically
challenged, was introduced through presentations to over
200 Hebrew School students in grades K-7. Each child
received the JNF “Blue Box” to make donations to this very
worthy cause.
The JNF - Not Just About Trees program was introduced
to the MJC Family. Donations can be made for life cycle
events and any Simcha. You’ll find projects for water conservation, infrastructure for new communities, equipping
fire fighters, the Sderot indoor playground/bomb shelter,
etc. The JNF link on our website www.mjcnj.com takes you
to their site. It’s quick, easy to do and no phone calls. Plus
MJC gets 20% back on all donations.
December
12/2 - Israel Update with Alexandra Benjamin
The IAC sponsored an evening with Alexandra Benjamin,
visiting from Jerusalem, Her topic was “Holy City in Strife
- an examination of the increasing tensions in Jerusalem
over the past six months and a discussion about what
the future may hold.” Approximately 60 people attended.
She also presented an IAC funded program to the Hebrew
School earlier in the day, which helped them understand
the geography of Israel. It concluded with them becoming
“A Part of Israel”, by pasting or writing their thoughts and
feelings about Israel on puzzle pieces, then attaching them
to a seven foot map. The laminated map is now on display
in the Chai Building.
January
We sponsored the “Beneath The Helmet” movie at the
June, July, August 2015 - Page 14
Marlboro Middle School, which followed 120 draftees
from the first day of their training till 205 days later
when they became combat paratroopers. Over 150 MJC
members attended with another 400 from the surrounding
communities, for a total of 550 people.
March
Anti-Semitism and the BDS Movement (Boycott,
Divestment and Sanctions) is ongoing at over 100 college
campuses in the US, with other demonstrations worldwide.
Our program on 3/15 featured the “Crossing The Line”
video from JeruslaemU.org and guest speakers. Over 120
people attended, and gained a better understanding of the
topic and how to counteract it.
The JNF Plant Your Way Program to fund future Israel
travel was introduced in the March Temple Topics. This is
a savings account for future travel to Israel, to attend any
program.
April
We worked with Rav Koas to run MJCs very first
Yom Ha’Zikaron program for the Hebrew School and
Congregation on 4/21. This holiday memorializes all those
who died fighting for Israel before and after the State was
created, along with all victims of terrorism.
The 2nd Annual Yom Ha’atmaut Israel themed dinner was
attended by over 130 people. Our guest speaker, MAJ Tiran
Attia of the IDF, told us about the new program that brings
challenged youth into the IDF at age 18, the same as others
turning that age. They are taught life and job skills, then
assigned to a regular unit in a support role.
May
This is the fifth year that MJC participated in the Celebrate
Israel Parade on 5/31. We marched up 5th Avenue with
40,000 others, from hundreds of both Jewish and nonJewish organizations.
We collected the JNF “Blue Boxes” that were given to the
Hebrew School Students in October. Almost $700 was
raised for LOTEM “Making Nature Accessible” to the
physically handicapped.
Today
As we end the fiscal year, the Israel Affairs Committee can
look back at these accomplishments with a sense of pride.
If you have any questions, comments or would like to join
the IAC please contact me at [email protected].

Ritually Speaking
Ritually Speaking
Later this month in the parasha “Shelach L’cha, along
with the continuing saga of the People of Israel, we
learn about the laws of tzitzit. You know those long
knotted fringes on the sides of the tallit? Those fringes
have always fascinated me. As a young girl I would sit
next to my Dad at shul and entertain myself with them
while absorbing the nusach of the prayers. I never
remember wondering if I would ever wear one, I just
thought they were fun to touch. Before my Bat Mitzvah
at 12, my family had moved and we joined a reform
synagogue. I was so proud to be able to read from the
Torah when my Conservative synagogoue friends were
not yet able to. By the time I was 13, the Conservative
Movement had made a very powerful new decision,
to allow women to make aliyot to the Torah and count
them in the minyan. So when I made my way back
to Conservative Judaism it was a perfect fit. Even at
that young age I was excited to take on those important
mitzvot and learn more about my role as a daughter of
the commandments.
Still it took until my daughter, Naomi, reached
Bat Mitzvah did I finally feel ready to wear a tallit.
Belonging to Marlboro Jewish Center before that,
I became used to covering my head and appreciated
the egalitarian nature of the custom. I wasn’t covering
my head because I was married but because I was
acknowledging God’s presence in the same custom as
the men. It was time for me to take on wearing the
beautiful tallit I had bought and it puts me in “prayer
mode” when I wear it. I also get to add the dimension of
wrapping it around my finger to kiss the garment when
we read the Shema prayer and say the word “tzitzit.”
It is another way that I can participate in the prayers
besides just bowing or rising for “kadosh, kadosh,
kadosh.” I guess it’s a kinesthetic thing for me.
The nice thing about my membership at Marlboro
Jewish was that my taking on new roles in Judaism
did not end there. They were in need of people to
occasionally lead a Friday night service -- I can do that.
And with my family’s support I have taken that on.
Then I learned they need more Gabbaim – someone
who takes on the job of making sure the Torah is read
correctly – could I do that? Sylvia Orwashel taught me
how to do that and to make sure the Cantor and Rabbi
are supported during the Torah service. It has been
a lot to learn but I have enjoyed being in service in
that way. Recently, I learned MJC needed more shiva
minyan leaders and so I learned that from all of our
current minyan leaders. I am also honored to give back
to this community in this way.
I am at the end of a four year journey with the ritual
committee at our synagogue and I have grown in ways
I had never considered when I first started attending
ritual committee meetings. I have served two years
with Suzy Rubinstein as Chairperson and then these
last two years as VP of Ritual with Beth Banks Cohn
as my Chairperson. These two knowledgeable women
were excellent to work with and I have learned a lot
from their leadership. The rest of the Ritual committee
also deserves a shout out as they work filling roles on
the bima, too. They are also the ones who volunteer
both Saturday mornings and evenings all year long to
give out the honors and make sure your special event
like a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or baby naming runs smoothly.
Did you ever consider saying “Thank you” to them?
And how about our loyal Board of Trustees who also
reserve and trade dates all year long to be at the door to
greet our guests? Thank you to all who have pitched in
and made our Shabbat services feel like a community.
I am grateful to you for being there these four years.
Our Ritual committee also supports Rabbi and Cantor
to provide our community with Holiday planning
throughout the year. Come join us in June for Shabbat
Under the Stars (6/5), Anniversary Shabbat (6/12) and
Volunteer Shabbat (6/20). Also, come join us on the
Ritual committee; we meet only one time per month
but our impact is essential. Come see what you can
learn – you do not need to know it all already.
Thank you also to the Editor of Temple Topics, Seth
Crystall, who has given me the space necessary to
express my thoughts monthly and does an enormous
job for the Marlboro Jewish Center. And a final
thank you to my family, Scott, Naomi & Aliza who
have supported my role as VP of Ritual and served as
inspiration for my thoughts penned here.
Have a wonderful summer! It’s been my honor to serve
you.
See you in shul!

Pre-School
As I write this, June is quickly approaching and that is so
hard to believe! But in looking back we had a wonderful
year here in the preschool. The children have learned and
grown in so many ways: socially, academically, physically
and Jewishly. They are now getting ready for their next
endeavors. Five Fabulous Days Plus (our pre-camp/end
of school year program), summer camp (here at MJC and
other camps as well as vacations) and then before we know it
another school year will be upon us.
But for now, we are winding down the school year and
winding up ongoing projects such as our journals, number
and letter books, art portfolios, etc. We are celebrating the
last of the school year and Jewish holidays. For Shavuot,
blintzes and ice cream were eaten. Torahs are being made
and the Ten Commandments are being discussed. Learning
about the Ten Commandments also gives us opportunities
for practicing our sequencing and counting. We make a
list of the class/school rules. This finds us reinforcing social
behaviors in a positive way. This is perfect as in everything
we do here in the preschool we try to make our children
better, kinder, and more empathetic. We try to help them
become little “menches.” We know that learning and
academics will come and of course we lay the foundation for
success in these areas. More importantly it makes us proud to
see that they are kind, loving and supportive little people. It
touches our hearts when they express kindness and concern
for one another. Their expressions, hugs are sincere, warm
and loving. A kiss for a hurting boo boo, a sincere “I’m
sorry” hug, even the sound of shared laughter fills us with
pleasure.. And, my dedicated and outstanding staff relish
these moments.
Speaking of my staff, they are completing another successful
school year. They are getting ready for our Teddy Bear Tea
Party, Mother Goose Day, Pajama Party and Graduations.
Once these are complete we can all look back and feel a
sense of accomplishment. Many thanks to them for all their
dedicated, talented teaching. Many thanks to all for your
hard work and nurturing teaching. The children and parents
have benefitted from both.
Lori Schprechman, our Project X-tra teacher, teaches the
children who need additional help or enrichment. She also
teaches our computer program to our Pre-K and Kindergarten
children. Parents appreciate this “xtra” attention! Thank
you Lori!
Our halls are always filled with the sound of music, thanks to
Sara Mason. She is our most amazing Mommy and Me and
Music teacher! Thank you Sara, we appreciate all you do!
Thanks to Nancy Burns, our kindergarten Hebrew teacher.
The children have learned so much and look forward to her
visits and the knowledge she imparts. Nancy wears many
hats and wears them well.
Thanks too to Bonnie Silverman and Barbara Becker for
making the preschool office flow smoothly from one event
to another. They see that everyone is informed and has
everything needed to carry out all our programs. They know
each and every parent and child. They make this a warm and
welcoming place.
Dina, of course, is everyone’s right hand and helps everything
in the Chai Building and the temple. She is efficient, helpful
and does everything with a smile.
Speaking of the temple, many thanks to everyone there
for their constant help and support. Starting with thanks
to Bonnie Komito, Beth Josephs, Dale Mesmer and Patty
Dorfschneider – our “go to” people there for always being
there for us. To the Executive Board: Jeff Katz, Rhonda
Eiger, Len Whitman, Jeff Wolf, Wayne Kaufman, Andrea
Barnett, Liz Reingold, Neil Kipnis and Barry Lurie. To
Wayne Sherman, our VP of Education – thanks for your
expressions of support, your suggestions and confidence in us.
To Lori Solomon, Ron Koas and Lisette Pigliacelli– you
really do share and cooperate well, giving us all one less worry
in our endeavors. Thank you both.
To the energetic Preschool Committee, with new ideas,
you add fun and variety to school (ie our after school sports
programs) we can’t thank you enough!
Thank you to Freya Markowitz, Jamie Albert and Nancy
Burns for an amazing new addition of Club MJC which
raised the funds for our new playground equipment.
Thanks too, to Erika Whitman and Kathleen Amster our
Book Fair experts extraordinaire. Your experience and
dedication to the preschool children, helping to foster their
love of reading is appreciated year after year. As a lover of
literature I can’t thank you enough.
The Preschool opened in 1988 and for all these years I have
been blessed to have an amazing staff. One person is “the
last man standing.” She has been a constant since we opened.
She is leaving now for a very well earned retirement with
her family. I wish her the best of luck and thanks for her
countless hours above and beyond what was required of her.
It won’t be the same without her; good luck Barbara Present.
Camp will start June 29th and run through August 21st.
Good luck to all our teachers and campers. We wish you a
healthy, happy and glorious summer!
And…as the song goes…”see you in September.”

Youth
Success, defined by the Youth Department, is lots of
kids laughing, hugging, playing, hanging out with
friends and just having a great time participating
both at the Chai and at regional events. By that
definition we have had an extremely successful year.
MUSY has continued in its proud tradition this year
with amazing numbers at all Regional Events. They
brought home many awards including Chapter
of Silver Excellence from Spring Convention and
for making the largest donation to Tikkun Olam.
This year, for the first time in many years, we
hosted the first Freshmen Kinnus. We had such a
large freshmen class that everyone was hosted by a
freshmen family! We could not have done any of
these amazing things without the continued support
of the MJC family and for that we say Todah Rabah.
MUSY also celebrated the engagement of Greg
Yellin, our great advisor, to Amanda Solomon. They
actually met four years ago in the Chai gym when
we hosted Pre International convention for Hagalil
and Hanegev, proving you never know who you will
meet in the Chai! Mazel Tov to them!
In May, we installed our MUSY board for 2015-2016
- Hannah Eiger, President; Seth Katz, Executive
Israel Awareness VP; Jessica Kaplan, Religious
Education VP; Josh Eiger, Social Action Tikkun
Olam VP; Cory Fox, Membership Programming
VP; and Gabrielle Kaplan, Communications VP.
We also have to say Yasher Koach to the 2014 - 2015
board, Marissa, Gabe, Josh, Seth, Matt, Matt and
Hannah, on a great year!
at the end of the year we had to say goodbye to Hollie
Kaplan, our advisor. We wish Hollie the best in all
her endeavors.
This time of year is an end, but also a beginning
for our MUSY seniors. The class of 2015 has been
with me since Katan and has grown up in the Chai
building. They have accomplished so much in High
School, in MUSY, in Hagalil and in International
USY. They have truly made me proud. Good Luck
in college to all of them!
Thanks so much to my staff, Lissette, Greg (and
Amanda), Eric and Hollie for all they continue to
do for all of our kids. They are truly a dedicated
bunch of people who step up to all challenges; I
could not make it without any of them. To my
committed Youth Commission Rhonda, Michelle,
Robin, Barbara, Michele, Kathleen and Laura who
are always looking to help make my job a little easier.
Thank you for everything!
So now we start to look forward to September, with
planning new and fun events for as they say in the
circus, “children of all ages.” Look in your temple
emails for the start of a new and exciting year.
Have a safe and wonderful summer,

Kadima and PreKadima had an amazing year. This
year we sent Kadimaniks to all Regional Events
and they all had a great time. Every Monday the
Chai was alive with the sounds of kids being kids
and having fun with Eric, Marissa, Matt, Gabe and
Hannah. This year we also celebrated the birth of
the Silvermans’ newest addition Dani Morgyn.
Katan, as usual, had a great year. They made projects,
made some kind of snack and of course ate. Every
month was another adventure of fun. Unfortunately

4 Ways to Promote Emotional Health in Kids
Do you have faith in your kids? By Adina Soclof
come help with dinner.”
We all want to raise emotionally healthy kids who are
independent and have confidence and good self-esteem.
Here are four ways to help promote emotional health in
your kids.
Instead we can give our children the benefit of the doubt:
“Sam, I need you attention. It seems that you didn’t
hear me the first time I asked. I know you that you are
generally very helpful. I need you to close your book, put
your laundry away and help with dinner.”
1. Feel what they feel:
3. See the good in your kids:
Kids who are emotionally healthy are comfortable with
their emotions. Many times parents inadvertently let
kids know that their feelings are not important. “You
shouldn’t be sad.” “We don’t cry over silly things like
that!”
Encouraging kids by saying, “Good job” or “You are
wonderful” does not build confidence or emotional
health. The best way to build our children’s emotional
health is to praise kids by describing what it is that they
have done.
To help kids understand themselves and their feelings
we need to empathize with them.
Instead of: “What a good boy you are!” Try this: “You
helped Daniel find the game he was looking for. This
family knows how to work together.”
“You feel sad that Eli is sick and can’t play with you
today.”
“You are so disappointed that you lost your favorite
book.”
When we empathize with our kids we teach them to listen
to themselves and understand and name their emotions.
When they feel understood they can more likely move
past their negative emotions and feel equipped to solve
their own problems.
“Yeah, maybe I’ll see if Sam is around...”
“I’ll look upstairs for the book…”
Empathizing conveys to kids a rich vocabulary of
words like, frustrated, embarrassed, sad, hurt, confused,
mad, and let down. Being emotionally literate is key in
developing emotional health because those words help
kids makes sense of their often conflicting feelings and
help them gain clarity about their inner world. It is then
easier for them to be able to understand and connect
with others.
2. Have faith in your kids:
Kids generally don’t like to listen to their parent’s rules.
They try to find lots of ways to disregard the limits
parents set. This can get pretty frustrating for us. To
help promote our kids mental health we should try (as
best as we can) to look at their moments of opposition as
opportunities. We can use those difficult times to show
that we have faith in their goodness and they have the
ability to do what they are told.
For example, a parent says, “What is taking you so long?
I asked you 10 minutes ago to put away your laundry and
June, July, August 2015 - Page 24
4. Teach kids to problem solve:
Life is full of challenges and we cannot protect our
kids from them. The best gift we can give to our kids
is teaching them that they have the ability to overcome
their problems. They are capable of coming up with
solutions.
In my house, we often use two phrases that help teach
kids solution oriented thinking:
“We don’t accuse; we focus on solutions.”
“Our family is a family that focuses on solutions.
By now they have become a bit of a family joke, and not
only do they help kids think about solving problems,
they are used to diffuse tense situations.
When the freezer is left open by mistake or someone
forgets to do their chores someone will say: “It’s a good
thing this family doesn’t accuse and we only focus on
solutions!”
Or my husband will say: “Wait, in this family we only
accuse, we never focus on solutions! Oh, no, I got that
wrong; it’s the opposite!”
Being empathetic, showing faith, seeing the goodness in
your kids and teaching your kids to problems solve are
all great ways to up the odds that your kids will grow up
to be emotionally healthy adults.

Below is an article I recently stumbled upon concerning minyans. Throughout the year there are times
that we are unable to make a minyan at MJC. Thus, congregants who are in mourning or observing the
Yahrzeit of a loved one are unable to say Kaddish. This is especially true during the summer months when
there is typically low attendance at services. If you are around during the summer, please check the calendars on page 8 and consider being a minyan maker. Thank you! – Seth Crystall

Upon Kindling
The Yahrzeit Candle
O God, Source of life and love, we turn to You at this time of remembering,
As we light this candle in memory of our departed.
In Your Keeping, the soul of our beloved still glows, As brightly as the “heavenly firmament.”
Truly, “the human soul is the light of the Lord.”
By Your light, may we who lovingly remember see light:
And may the memory of our departed abide with us, as a lasting benediction.
