PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Time is a fleeting commodity that never seems to be in ample supply. It travels at incredible speeds and
never seems to be available when you want it to be. Thus is the feeling as we approach the tail end of
semester 1…already. It seems like just yesterday we were settling into classes and beginning to get our
first few days of classes under our belts. Sports teams were having their first practices and our Grade 9’s
were having fun with our opening assembly festivities. Oh how long ago that actually was.
Midterm has come and gone with report cards going home early in November. Our data showed a positive
school and grade average similar to previous years. Our homework program numbers seem to be as strong
as ever with a close to 96% completion rate. Early Dismissal LIT (learning improvement teams) days have
teachers working towards our school goals of literacy and student engagement. TAG (teacher advisor group) has seen a
new revival with regular activities and accomplishments to be proud of. Student led conferences met with positive growth
with many parents and students discussing achievement and how “be the best they can be”. All in all, a positive night for
both parents/students and teachers.
With the volleyball, football and golf season’s complete, I would like to thank the many coaches who made it all possible.
Both community and teacher coaches work tirelessly to ensure students have opportunity to experience athletics at the
competitive level. Next up for ACHS, basketball, curling and drama. Stayed tuned for the more on these activities as they
progress through the season.
Lastly, I want to give a huge shout out to our Student Council and their advisors Mrs. Knudsen and Froshaug on their efforts
in bringing the Christmas Meal back to ACHS and the Assiniboia Community. Nothing signals the start of the Christmas
season like the smell of turkey in the halls.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and hope everyone is rests up for the last few weeks of semester 2 in
January.

CAREER GUIDANCE
Let me introduce to you our Career Guidance Counsellor, Mr. Jeff Feeley. He comes to the
high school on a regular basis to visit with mainly grade 11 and 12 students in order to
determine and advise the best path to take in regards to course selection for their future. He
also assists with selection of colleges and universities, the application process and possible
funding. Parents are also invited to be involved in this process and can contact Jeff either

SRC NEWS
Since ending of October, the SLC has been busy planning school activities so students can get involved. On
October 26th to the 30th, ACHS was busy with a spirit week, starting with hat day, bright clothing day,
matching suit day, jersey day and ending the week with Halloween themed activities, and of course, students
displaying this year's Halloween costumes. This year, the SLC set up another successful haunted house, as
well as activities such as a jello eating contest, guess the SLC baby picture, guessing how many candies in a
jar, musical chairs, hungry hungry hippos and much more. A formal day was planned for November 10th as a
part of our annual Remembrance Day ceremony, organized by the SHIFT class. Later, on November 17th, the
SLC planned Taco Tuesday event, as well as a spirit day to dress up as if you were going to Mexico, and
enjoying your taco in a bag provided by the SLC. Since these recent events, the SLC has been occupied with
planning the ACHS Christmas Supper, which will be held on December 9th.

ACHS ART AND DRAMA CLUB
Art and Drama are cooking up a storm as ACHS this fall. Our Production of the Neighbours is
entering into the rehearsal process and we have set our production date for Tuesday February 9,
2016. Art class has been working on pottery and the culinary arts. Keep your eyes open this spring
for our show case in the Kay Cristo room beside the library.

Donation to ACHS Nutrition Program
ACHS is very happy to receive a $250.00 donation from the Southland Co-op to our Nutrition
Program. This program provides lunches and snacks to students who may have forgot or are unable
to bring a lunch to school. The money was raised by the Co-op’s Fundraising BBQ and Ethnic
Jubilee booth.

ROCKET ATHLETICS
SR Girls Basketball
The senior girls will be kicking off their 2015/16 campaign with their first practice to be held
on Nov. 23rd at 3:30 PM. Our first home game will be against Moose Jaw Central on Dec.
8 at 7 PM. The girls have an extensive tournament schedule with tournaments in Fillmore,
Indian Head, Outlook, Caronport, Melville, and Estevan. The girls’ home tournament will
be held on Feb. 4 and 5 with the 7th annual pink game being held on Feb. 4th. The girls
are excited about this tournament, because every team that is in attendance will be a pink
team from around the province. Every one of these teams will be wearing their pink
uniforms at least once in a game and it will be a huge celebration of high school sport and the difference
that youth can make. The team does have a website and a schedule of all our games can be found

girls that would like to play senior girls basketball during the upcoming season should see Mr. Wandler
ASAP.

SR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
This year the SR girls had two teams. Our team (Peggy Gronsdahl, Matt Lothian and Sherry SaxtonRichards) crew had 13 players. There were 5 girls in grade 12, 4 in grade 11 and 5 in grade 10. We
did not play league this year because we decided we needed more practice and it was a better use of
our time to play only tournaments. Our tournaments included Loreburn/Davidson, University of Regina,
our home tournament, Moose Jaw, Oxbow and playoffs. The girls worked hard and improved greatly
and showed great skill at different points in the season. During playoffs in Caronport we lost to Vanier
and Notre Dame and Caronport who all advanced to provincials Nov 20/21 weekend.
Although we didn’t make it to provincial we are very proud of the girls and saw great improvement.

SR Boys Football
The Rockets last game was October 31 in Hafford, DK. It was the provincial quarter final
with it being a big defensive game in the first half. The score was tied 16-16 but Hafford
scoring on some lucky plays put them up 40-16 going into the 4th quarter. This was the
quarter where the Rockets started getting on track. We fought right until the last play but
couldn’t get what we wanted. Close, but no cigar! The seniors will remember that game
for the rest of their lives and the others should be happy as next year they will have again
another solid squad. This year the Rockets record was 7-2.

SR Boys Volleyball
The senior boys were able to attend four tournaments this year, making playoffs in three
of the four as well as winning gold at one. The boys worked hard at their practices to
steadily improve their skill and teamwork. At the end of the season, they eagerly agreed to
add more practice time to get themselves ready for 4A Regional Competition in Shaunavon
on November 21st. Their focus and desire to improve allowed them to once again make
playoffs at the regional competition after placing 2nd in their pool after the round robin. In
the semi-finals, they faced the home-team who placed 1st in their round robin competition. After falling
short in game one, the Rockets fought back from a 9-3 deficit to win game two 26-24. In game three,
the game remained close with each team trading points until Shaunavon was able to pull ahead to win
the game.
The boys should be proud of their accomplishments as they came together as a team and peaked at
just the right time. It is great to see the improvements over the last two years as we slowly bring senior
boys volleyball back on the map.
Good luck to our seniors Davis, Justin, and Patrick as they graduate and move on to the next chapter
of their lives. They will be missed next year as they had a big impact on our team. Thanks parents for
getting your child to the gym, for encouraging them while they played, for driving when needed, and for
helping out in the concession for our home tournament. Thanks to our assistant coaches, Curt, Peg,
and Kevin for all of their work and dedication to helping run practices and sharing their expertise.

Bantam Girls Volleyball –
The bantam girls’ volleyball season was a good one. The girls played Avonlea 1 and 2,
AES 1 and 2, Mossbank, Rockglen, Coronach, Lafleche and Gravelbourg. The girls
played well in all their October league games, winning the majority of them. The girls
headed to sections on October 24. Unfortunately the girls failed to advance to Districts.
The team ended their season with playing a game against their parents with pizza
afterwards. The girls played great this season and learned a lot.

Bantam Boys Volleyball
This year’s volleyball team started out slow practicing their basics to improve their play. The league
play showed our weaknesses that we needed to improve on. We practiced hard on our returning
serves, setting, bumping and spiking. A thank you goes out to Tyven Branton for helping with the setting
requirements of the team. . Boys played great at the Lafleche tournament placing first. Our units
tournament we placed first. I’m very proud to comment that the coach from Bengough was impressed
with the actions and sportsmanship that our young adults showed when playing against them during
the tournament play. So hats off to you guys on putting your best foot forward, others are noticing the
positive actions that you have shown on and off the court. We then moved onto sectionals in Avonlea,
everyone played exceptional well, but unfortunately lost in the semi-final. I would like say the most
improved volleyball player was Caden Bourassa, His play was amazing at the tournament.

CURLING
ACHS curling is off to a rocking start. Tess Corman has signed on to help coach this
year. She has already recruited at least one new curler and under her tutelage everyone
is looking strong. It looks like we will be able to have one bantam boy’s team, two senior
boys’ teams, one senior mixed team, and one senior girl’s team this season. It is still
not too late to join up, whether you are an old pro or a beginner we have a place for you.
We are going to be ordering new shirts or jackets. We are also excited to be hosting
the senior boy’s provincials for the next two years. We hope to see everyone out supporting our teams
this year.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A GREAT BUS RIDE
1. Greet the driver.
2. Sit down in your assigned seat.
3. Remain seated throughout the bus ride.
4. Keep hands, arms, and legs inside your assigned seat area.
5. Keep track of your personal belongings and take them with you when you get off the bus.
6. Use a quiet voice when speaking to other students on the bus.
7. Do not pester, tease or bother other bus riders.
8. Stay seated until the bus stops completely.
9. Exit the bus quietly and quickly.
10. At the end of the day, say goodnight to your bus driver.
