Families Reaching for the Best
Spin-A-Thon + Kids Carnival + More!
On Sunday, May 9, the JCC will hold its 29th Annual
Rubin Run. Slated for Mother’s Day, the family event
will celebrate family togetherness and community in a
day of shared fitness and fun. Named for Leonard
Rubin (z”l), a past president and founder of the JCC,
who always sought to do the most where the need was
greatest, this is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding fundraisers the JCC holds.
Featuring a 10K, 5K run/walk and spin-a-thon, the
event will offer something for everyone – a continental
breakfast, a carnival, activities for children, and as a
special token, all participating moms will receive roses
as they cross the finish line. The JCC’s professional
fitness staff will lead pre-race stretches and warm-ups,
and awards will be given to winners in each age
category.
Participants can run alone or create their own team of
four or more to run the relatively flat course through
the tree-lined streets of Tenafly, Englewood and
Englewood Cliffs.

“Staying fit and spending a healthy
morning together as a family is the best
Mother’s Day gift possible,” says Saul Scherl,
one of the event’s co-chairs. “The run provides a perfect
venue for parents to serve as role models for their kids
and to teach them the importance of health and
wellness.”
All proceeds from the run and spin-a-thon will be used
to support social service and healthy lifestyle programs
designed to enhance the quality of life for hundreds of
people in our community including children, teens and
adults with special needs and people who are neurologically and physically challenged. As in years past,
Englewood Hospital and Medical Center will serve as
the Run’s lead sponsor, joining the JCC as a partner.
Members can now benefit from private nutritional and
fitness consultations and a roster of revitalizing spa and
wellness services, including massage, facials, personal
training, reflexology, stress reduction workshops, private Pilate’s sessions, sports-specific training, back-pain
prevention and more. JCC members can also enjoy
many new classes and instructors, as well as 60 free
group exercise classes each week.
“We are very proud of our increased ability to meet the
health and wellness needs of our community and proud
to be hosting our annual run on Mother’s Day, when
people can demonstrate their commitment to their
families and their community by participating in an
important fundraiser that will support people in our
local community who need extra support,” concludes
Neal Merker.
For information, please call Irene at 201.408.1472.
Lead Sponsor:
In recent years, the Rubin Run has drawn more than
600 runners and friends from the surrounding community. This year, the JCC anticipates more runners than
ever as a result of major expansions in its fitness facilities and health and wellness programming.
The centerpiece of this expansion is the newlycompleted Russ Berrie Family Health & Recreation
Complex, a two-story, spacious exercise facility offering
more programs and classes than ever. The new complex
also includes the completely renovated Seiden Wellness
Center (SWC), featuring an adult-only locker room
with towel service and other spa amenities.

again; Passover Yom Ha’Shoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), Yom
Ha’Zikaron (the State of Israel’s Memorial Day) and Yom
Ha’Atzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day). Year after year, we
choose to cope with the emotional turbulence and vicissitudes
that this cycle brings.
How do we do it?
So it was and has been for the
Jewish People. For four hundred
years, we were fated to the unending misery and terrors of
bondage in Egypt. Eventually, however, our day of deliverance
arrived. And again, in our most recent history – which remains
the present for an increasingly fewer number of survivors, our
people nevertheless emerged into the light of freedom.
We come together as a community to cherish and treasure the
memories of our people with a Yizkor prayer and candle. Thus,
we preserve the marrow of their Jewish essence within the fabric of our Jewish way of life. And then we come together again
to rejoioce in the miracle of our State of Israel.
Why do we do it?
The unanswerable questions will always be with us, about the
countless millions who perished, who endured insufferable
punishment and torture, who bear, even today, incurable scars
of mind and body.
Redemption may be slow in coming, but I’ve come to firmly
believe that one of the messages of Passover is everlastingly
true. G-d does care about the ultimate well-being and welfare
of the Jewish People. For our generation, the State of Israel is
its magnificent reflection.
We believe that it is a privilege and a commitment that we take
on willingly in order to insure the Jewish futures of our children and grandchildren.
On behalf of our entire JCC family, we wish you a Chag Pesach
Kah’sher V’Samayach, a most joyous and festive Passover holiday. We invite you join us as we commemorate Yom Ha’Shoah
and Yom Ha’Zikaron and celebrate Yom Ha’Atzmaut together.
B’ vracha,

Renovation Update
Inclement Weather Updates
General
In the event of inclement weather please
call the main phone number and check our
website www.jccotp.org to confirm our
schedule for the day.
Early Childhood
• Our website www.jccotp.org or
• Call Felicia Glantz, Early Childhood
Director, at ext. 1430, for a recorded report
• Tune into WCBS-880 am radio.
On Sunday, January 31st, we dedicated the new Russ Berrie Family Health and
Recreation Complex, marking a major milestone in JCC history.
We have started the next phase of the renovation. This includes the Rubin Nursery
Wing (rooms 1-6 and the nursery activity area), the entire upstairs hallways (rooms
202-206 and library), and the front entrance and main lobby.
The following changes are currently in place:
• All members and guests enter the JCC through the Berrie Complex entrance.
The front entrance, lobby, desk and main stairs are unavailable.
• The parking lot has one-way access on the driveway closest to the building on the left as you approach the building and
handicap parking has been relocated to the Berrie Complex entrance.
• There is direct access to locker rooms, racquetball court, gyms, Sadinoff Fitness Center and exercise studios through the
new Berrie Complex reception area.
• A temporary walking path has been constructed upstairs to allow members second floor access from one side of the
building to the other.
• Additional construction is underway in the downstairs men’s locker room in an effort to create more space.
We appreciate your cooperation and patience during this very exciting transition. The end result will be a warm and welcoming
new front entrance, a grand atrium and lobby; a new front lobby elevator; renovated nursery school, expanded second floor meeting rooms; a renovated Marcus Library and a gracious new relocated Grossmann Board Room; and new administrative offices on
the second floor. To stay up-to-date on every phase and stage of development, please refer to signage that is displayed throughout
the building. We will continue posting regular Renovation Updates, on our website. If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the renovation please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected].

Oskar Schindler’s visit to Israel, the public debate
whether a person with a Nazi background should be
allowed to plant a tree in the Avenue of the Righteous
at Yad Vashem, and the creation of the Commission for
the Righteous.
Thursday, March 11: The Various Types of Rescue Possibilities
Learn the fascinating details of how Jews were
sheltered and hid in many different kinds of
environments. This session will also treat the issues
of false credentials; escape to less dangerous or safer
places; and the rescue of children.
Tuesday March 16: Some Unresolved and Controversial Issues
Many issues of Holocaust rescue are still widely
debated: How many were saved through help by
non-Jews, and why so few? How are Christian converts
among the rescuers and rescued to be considered? If
romance led to rescue, is the rescuer a “righteous”
person? Antisemites and collaborators with the Nazis
who also aided Jews at risk to themselves - are they to
be awarded the Righteous accolade? And with regard
to teaching the Holocaust – should the emphasis be on
the horrors of the Shoah, or the rescue deeds of the
Righteous, or a combination of both?

stages of the Catskill Mountains, the Jewish vacation

Today, Roman is the longtime dean of the Friars Club

century ago. For more information, contact Lisa

Honoring Lilo Thurnauer
Handel: Sonata for Violin and Continuo
Bliss: Quintet for Clarinet and Strings
Schubert: Quintet in A Major (“The Trout”)
The Thurnauer Chamber Music Society concludes its 2009-10 series on Saturday,
March 6 at 8pm with a concert honoring Lilo Thurnauer and featuring the great
“Trout” Quintet of Franz Schubert. In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the
Thurnauer School, the Thurnauer Chamber Music Society has been honoring individuals whose support has been crucial to the success of the Society’s Concert Series.
Lilo Thurnauer has warmly and generously continued the legacy of Bill and Maria
Thurnauer, who endowed the music school that bears their name. Her constant and
loving presence and support of the music school in so many ways – as honorary Gift
of Music Chair and an active member of the 25th anniversary committee – has
touched the artists, staff and children in the music school.
Mrs. Thurnauer selected “The Trout” for this occasion as it is one of her favorites.
The work takes its name from Schubert’s song, “Die Forelle” (The Trout), in which
the melody is heard in the fourth movement as a theme and variations.
Members of the Thurnauer Chamber Music Society are distinguished award-winning
performers and recording artists who are affiliated with the Thurnauer School of
Music. They are Sharon Roffman and Annaliesa Place, violins; Yari Bond, cello;
Richard Goldsmith, clarinet; and Jon Klibonoff, piano.
$16 JCC members, $20 general admission
Thurnauer Chamber Music Society concerts are made possible by a generous
contribution from Eva Holzer and the Dr. Zalman “Tiny” Konikow Chamber Music
Endowment Fund as well as a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the
arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

decade, Norma has created the “2010 Collection,” featuring pearls, which she is
showcasing. Come choose from a selection of Y’s, lariats, and collars. These
beautiful pieces can be worn separately or layered. Owning a Norma Wellington
design is a valuable investment. Norma’s exclusive collection of one of a kind or
limited edition pieces is available in a variety of price ranges starting at $125.
Aware of her client’s active life style Norma’s versatile jewelry can be worn
throughout the day from an early morning meeting to an evening in a little
black dress. Wellington’s creations are selected because they exhibit new trends,
excellent design and quality workmanship. The items are perfect for birthdays,
anniversaries, Mother’s Day and graduations. Norma feels privileged to have the
ability to bring joy to her clients and says, “It is my passion to create pieces that
combine artistry and style to reflect the wearer’s individuality”.

JCC Dedicates the Russ Berrie Family Health & Recreation Complex
O
n Sunday, January 31, the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades held a dedication
and ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the Russ Berrie Family
Health & Recreation Complex. Attended by a gathering of JCC Board members,
Angelica Berrie, President of the Russell Berrie Foundation and board members
of the Founation, and other friends and supporters of the Center, the event
marked a major milestone in JCC history.
“It is our honor and privilege to see this state-of-the-art facility named for the
Berrie Family,” Campaign Chair Pearl Seiden told the crowd. “It is particularly
fitting that the Berrie trustees in their infinite wisdom, chose to carry on Russ’s
legacy here at the JCC by naming the Russ Berrie Family Health and Recreation
Complex. Russ was an ardent supporter, board member and benefactor for the
JCC throughout his lifetime.”
The JCC launched The Gift of Community Capital and Endowment Campaign in
January 2007 to ensure that the Center continues to be a cornerstone of Jewish
life for generations to come. To advance the campaign, the Berrie Foundation
made an extraordinary commitment by gifting a $2 million challenge grant.
This gesture encouraged the community to participate on a level where their
gifts were matched dollar for dollar.
In recognition of the naming of the Complex,
Angelica Berrie said the following: “I feel today's
message should be about the importance of building
our community with the same fervor and spirit…
that we contribute to other organizations and institutions that have equally compelling needs. We are
strengthened by our sense of connection to our
community. Our sacred value of Tikun Olam (repairing the world) begins with repairing the world right
here, where we live. We can be a light unto the
world, but let's not forget our community!”
The newly opened complex is a modern, two-story
facility featuring spacious new exercise rooms, a
spinning room, family changing suites with private
facilities, new lockers, and an expansion of its

amenities, including private nutritional and fitness
consultations, massage, facials, reflexology, stress

sports-specific training and more.
“Our goal is to help people achieve healthier

increased ability to meet the health and wellness

Dr. Steve Elias
Come uncover common misconceptions surrounding eating and
exercise. Many athletes think that if they eat before a workout,
they will get nauseated or cramp. Others believe that if they skip
breakfast or lunch, they'll burn more fat by exercising on an
empty stomach. And still others assume that hunger pangs before
a workout are a good sign, believing their body will divert all its
energy to the workout. Guess what? None of these beliefs are
true.
Carol Rubin, RD
During this informative seminar, vascular surgeon Steve Elias,
MD, (tri-athlete) and JCC nutritionist Carol Rubin, RD, will share
valuable tips on how to prepare for a healthy workout, how to
maximize performance, the importance of proper hydration, carbohydrates and endurance, pre-workout fueling, post workout
replenishing, and examples of key things not to do or eat to
ensure a healthy workout.
This seminar is geared and open to exercisers at all levels – from the casual treadmill
walker to the serious athlete preparing for rigorous endurance training.
Steve Elias, MD, FACS, FACPh, is the Director of The Centers for Vein Disease at Englewood Hospital and
Medical Center and Mount Sinai Hospital in NY. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Mount Sinai School
of Medicine and lectures, publishes and teaches extensively about minimally invasive vein care. Dr. Elias has
proctored at the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Case Western Reserve, Columbia Presbyterian, Mount
Sinai Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center. He has been featured on CNN, Fox News, CBS, NBC and ABC,
and has published numerous articles and book chapters on new minimally invasive vein techniques.
Carol Rubin, RD is a registered dietitian with a Master of Medical Science in Clinical Nutrition from Emory
University and a Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management from the American Dietetic Association.
She has worked as a hospital dietitian, maintains a private practice and provides individual nutrition consultations and group education for the JCC Fitness and Wellness Departments

ENDOWMENTS: A LOVING LEGACY
Over the years, endowment funds have enabled the JCC to
enhance our programs and services and respond to challenges
within our community. We thank you for making a commitment
to our agency and our future.
Types of Endowments
Endowment funds allow you to give in personal and creative
ways. They can be named to:
• Honor the memory of a loved one
• Recognize a family member or friend on a special occasion
• Meet the goals of a family foundation
Benefits
• They can be earmarked for an existing JCC service or
program, allowing you to support a cause or interest that is
important to you.
• They can be named for a loved one, allowing you to honor or
remember someone meaningful in your life.
• They are gifts that “keep on giving.” Only a small amount of
your fund’s value is expended each year,
so the fund lives on — helping people in need
and perpetuating the memory of the person you are honoring.
• Can be tailored in many ways to meet your philanthropic
needs.
How to Establish an Endowment Fund
Center Leadership
For a charitable, tax-deductible donation of $10,000 or more,
you can establish a personal endowment fund at the JCC. We
are continually evolving to meet the needs of our community
and we pride ourselves on our ability to offer programs and
services that enrich our members’ lives. The additional
revenue generated by personal endowment funds, makes it
possible to offer the new and dynamic programs. Please,
consider establishing a personal endowment and help us
address important needs in our community.

Estate Planning
is a gift for the future...
a legacy
for those you love,
and those they love...
A promise that future generations will connect and celebrate together, play together,
learn together, and most importantly, take care of each other, together.
Your planned gift will help make membership
more affordable and provide programs for our
senior citizens and frail elderly, services for
children and adults with special needs, and
scholarships for those in need. You can help
ensure that the JCC remains a place where
everyone can belong.
Why KAPLEN JCC ON THE PALISADES
Because a Jewish Community Center should be within everyone’s reach.
For futher information on estate planning options, please call Sharon Kestenbaum at 201.408.1406.
