TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
IN THE VINEYARD.
As usual, today’s first and third scripture readings are
obviously related, with the second continuing one of Paul’s
Letters—these days, the Letter to the Philippians. The
vineyard stories from Isaiah and Matthew both talk about
evildoers coming to a bad end.
In Isaiah, it’s the vineyard itself that produces “wild
grapes” instead of the crop the owner dreamed of and
worked for. So it will be “trampled” and “overgrown with
thorns.” In Matthew, those to whom the owner leased the
vineyard destroy the dream. So the owner “will put those
wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard
to other tenants.” (Matthew 21:41)
Yes, if we reject divine love we come to a bad end. And
with all this talk of the unfaithful being trampled and
thrown out, it’s consoling to hear Paul’s message to the
Philippians, who were by no means perfect. “Have no
anxiety at all,” Paul said. “Then the God of peace will be
with you.” (Philippians 4:6, 9)

planning a wedding. Much of it was probably
exciting and fun. Some of it may have been a
burden or cause for disagreement. Reflecting on

As you may know on Catechetical
Sunday in September, the Church asks us
to give a blessing to those who share the
Scriptures with others through faithsharing in numerous ways in classrooms,
homes, hospitals both in small groups and one-toone experiences. That is how individuals assist in
“growing the Church.”
The bishops’ theme for catechists this year is the gift
of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The sacraments
are encounters with the Divine. Reconciliation is an
encounter with our forgiving and merciful God. The
focus of the sacrament is God; that is, who we
celebrate. Many of us have the focus on ourselves
which is why we can’t see how admitting our
faults, our sins, is in anyway celebratory!
It is only when we confess our sins and receive
“absolution” within the sacrament, that we leave
unburdened and ready to give thanks and celebrate
the God who provided such an opportunity of grace.
In late September, parents of children preparing for
their First Reconciliation gathered for presentations
about the history and theology of the sacrament as
well as how we approach it with children. They
were reminded about the importance of modeling
forgiveness in their homes. Values are often
“caught” through example.
This month students in PSR and St. Anselm School
will have the opportunity to receive the sacrament
with a community (class) context. Our prayer is that
the sacrament will be an on-going part of their lives
leading to their wholeness and holiness.
Pope Francis has displayed the mercy of God
through words and actions since he came onto the
world scene. His writings echo again and again the
mercy of our God. What a contrast to the world
events of our day! Let us pray for each other that
we may have the courage to be honest about our
limitations and joyful about the forgiveness we
receive when we speak it aloud through the
sacrament of Reconciliation.
ST. ANSELM HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL
The Saint Anselm Parent Club will hold its annual
Halloween Carnival on Sunday, October 26th from

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The sacrament of penance has a long and difficult
history. The Church sometimes struggles with how
best to be faithful to the image of an all-forgiving
God. Once a very public rite with publicly visible
participation on the part of the penitent, it became
in time a very private matter. By the fourteenth
century, when a prayer of absolution and a laying
on of hands was still required in sacramental
confession, theologians were saying that even that
was too much liturgy. All that was required was
confession itself, and the sacramental words Ego te
absolvo, or “ I absolve you.”
In 1614 the Council of Florence tried to flesh out
this bare skeleton, requiring that if possible the
priest should wear a stole, that the confession
should be in church, and that there be questions
about the person’s state in life, occupation, and last
confession. This is the first time the Church
recommended that the penitent and priest be
separated by a grill, thereby eliminating the ritual
laying on of hands once so central to the sacrament,
substituting the priest’s raised right hand in
blessing. This is the rite that remained in force until
the sacrament became the subject of very stormy
debates at the Second Vatican Council, leading to a
major reform in 1974 that is still only partially
received.

The Sacrament of the Anointing
of the Sick will be celebrated on
Sunday morning, October 12th at
the 9:30 and 11:30 Masses and
Saturday, October 25 at
4:30 p.m. and at the 8:00 a.m.
on Sunday, October 26.
Through this sacrament, the Lord assures us of his
care and extends his forgiveness and strength to
the sick person. In the sacrament we are united
with Christ in the paschal mystery. Anyone who
is ill or elderly is welcome to receive the
sacrament. The community present is encouraged
to pray for the healing of those receiving the
sacrament.
