A message to our community
Karen McGrath, President and CEO,
Georgian Bay General Hospital
Partner [pahrt-ner] (noun): Somebody who
shares activity; somebody who is involved in an
activity with somebody else – Encarta
Georgian Bay General Hospital, Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation, Georgian Bay
General Hospital Volunteer Association; three partners that are completely intertwined.
Georgian Bay General Hospital connects with the community itself when someone in our
community needs us; through the Foundation as they share the needs of the hospital back
out to the community and through the Volunteer Association as these men and women who
represent our community arrive every day to share in our work.
“Here at GBGH it is our job to make sure we provide the best care possible to the community, and in turn the community looks after the well-being of the hospital by providing the
Neal Foot, Board Chair,
Georgian Bay General Hospital
funds to the Foundation that allow us to purchase the best tools,” GBGH President and CEO
Karen McGrath says.
Your hospital must rely on that partnership to purchase the best tools as provincial
funding does not include money to purchase equipment. Funds for equipment and capital
projects come from generous donors in our community through the Georgian Bay General
Hospital Foundation.
Every year, the Foundation engages our community to rise to the challenge to keep our
hospital on pace with other community hospitals across the province. Last year, the Foundation raised more than $2.1 million for the annual equipment needs and Emergency
Department revitalization.
The Volunteer Association continues to be one of the largest supporters of your hospital.
Ann Kerry, President,
Georgian Bay General Hospital
Volunteer Association
Through bake sales, butter tart sales, tag days and Today I’m Working for My Hospital, the
volunteers are able to raise nearly $90,000 each year for the hospital. And they continued
to provide more than 30,000 hours a year providing direct patient care as well.
‘Thank you’ is something we do not say lightly, for we know our community, our volunteers and our Foundation support us because they believe in the work we are doing here at
GBGH. And we don’t take that for granted.
Communities can build great hospitals and Georgian Bay General Hospital is proof of
that. Thank you!

Community Built:
New Emergency Department
goes beyond expectations
Ribbon cutting for New Emergency Department – June 2014
T
he doors to the new Georgian
Bay General Hospital Emergency Department opened for business last June, seven years after the
project began.
“This was the day we had all been
waiting for,” says Karen McGrath,
GBGH President and CEO. “I think it is
safe to say that everyone at the hospital and in the communities we serve
were anxiously awaiting that day. Many
years of planning and fundraising went
into making that happen; it was truly a
community celebration!”
That portion of the more than
$13-million project was unique in that
the $5-million it took to complete was
accomplished without any funding from
the Ministry of Health and Long Term
Care. Through the Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation the community
raised $2.1-million, and the County of
Simcoe contributed $2.6-million under
its hospital capital fund.
Phase one was the $5-million addition to the department, and the first
step in the overall project that will include the addition of an enclosed fourbay ambulance garage when complete.
Construction on phases two and
three – the addition of a four-bay ambu-
First Patient in new ED
lance garage and interior renovations
to existing space – is expected to begin
this year with funding from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, and
once again our community is contributing the local share.
The expanded Emergency Department added 6,000 square feet to the
department, including a new entrance,
triage/registration area, trauma room
and treatment rooms.
The new space has also allowed for
many improvements to how patients are
seen and treated in the department.
Triage and registration introduced a
process where the clerk and the nurse
both come to the patient – once the patient takes the seat in the cubicle, staff
GBGH 2015
5
come to them, eliminating the need for
patients to go back and forth during the
process.
The department also introduced
leading-edge technology with self-check
in kiosks that not only alert the triage
nurse and clerk to the patient’s arrival
but also ask them the initial questions
to help cut down on the time the nurse
is typing in data instead of taking vital
signs.
The GBGH Emergency Department
saw 45,000 patients last year in a
space designed in 1976 to accommodate 18,000. Despite the cramped
quarters, wait times in the department
have remained good and the hospital
has consistently been among the top
performers in large-volume hospitals in
the province.
“We are anticipating the next phase
of construction - having lived through
the first phase, we are a little more prepared for what to expect,” says Sheree
Noon, Manager of the Emergency Department.
“This entire project is a huge testament to just how supportive and generous the community we live in is,” Ms.
McGrath adds.

We wanted to contribute to something that would stay in the
“community
and looked at what the biggest need might be in our area. The events
that we have put on over the years attract the community because they’re
fun and practical. The fundraising, that’s the fun part!
– Sherry Middaugh
S
herry and Wayne Middaugh
have spent the past 20 years
simultaneously
building
extremely successful curling careers on
the national and international stages.
They have also established themselves
in the Midland community, where they
live with their two daughters, Emily and
Kelly. They are proud of the community
they live in and have worked hard to
ensure that this community remains at
its healthiest.
Best known for her career as a procurler, Sherry is a five-time Ontario
curling champion and four-time
bronze medalist at the Canadian
Championships. But, here at home,
”
she has also put her strategic vision
to work in support of the Georgian Bay
General Hospital Foundation.
Sherry
is
responsible
for
spearheading the event, Curl with the
Pros, a fundraiser that completed ten
successful years in 2014. The event
began in 2004, each year bringing out
an overwhelming number of participants
from the community, while also taking
GBGH to a national stage.
In ten years, Sherry’s Curl with the Pros
event raised over $200,000 in support
of annual equipment needs at GBGH!
In 2012, the fundraiser generated the
funds to purchase four new hospital
beds; in 2013, a new treatment room

in the Emergency Department; and in
its last year, raised funds for six patient
controlled pain pumps.
On top of Curl with the Pros, Sherry
and her husband Wayne have been
organizing an annual golf tournament
at the Midland Golf and Country
Club. This fantastic event has raised
$390,000 since 2001!
We want to say THANK YOU to Sherry

gifts of time and support given to the
GBGH Foundation.

GBGH Staff
Support their
Hospital!
id you know that nearly
half of all Georgian Bay
General Hospital employees donate financially
through payroll deduction and
in-hospital fundraisers? Last
year, your hospital staff gave
nearly $20,000 in financial support to the GBGH Foundation!
Your GBGH nurses, doctors and
support staff know better than anyone
how important it is to have the latest
equipment and technology at hand.
With the right tools, they can do their
jobs well and provide you with the best
care.
Not only does the staff at GBGH work
tirelessly to provide every person with
exceptional care, every time, and support the GBGH Foundation financially
but they also kindly lend their voices,
smiles and expertise to our direct mail
programs. Last year, the staff gracious-
ly posed for pictures, shared their experiences and helped to ensure that our
letters accurately portrayed the hospital
needs to our caring community. With
their help, the Foundation received the
funds to purchase a defibrillator for an
outpatient treatment area, as well as
an anesthesia machine for the Operating Room.
As another extraordinary display of
staff generosity, in October 2014, the
Emergency Room physicians at GBGH
came together to contribute $12,000
as the title sponsor of the GBGH Foundation’s annual Gala! In addition to
their financial support, 47 GBGH physicians also bought tickets and joined in
the festivities on that evening, showing
their support for the Foundation’s fundraising efforts in a big way.
We want to say THANK YOU to the
staff at Georgian Bay General Hospital
for their incredible support!

Blue Jackets
Thanks
to the
T
he folks in the Blue Jackets at
Georgian Bay General Hospital
are usually the first people you
see when you visit, and they are some
of the heroes who help the hospital to
deliver on the promise of Exceptional
Care, Every Person, Every Time.
It only stands to reason that those
volunteers who provide more than
34,000 hours of service to the hospital,
and by extension the entire community,
get a little recognition of their own.
Last year the hospital and the
Volunteer Association joined forces to
launch the Exceptional Volunteer Awards
program. Modelled after the hospital’s
Exceptional People - Board Awards of
Excellence, the Volunteer awards are
intended to recognize those volunteers
who not only live the values but go above
and beyond.
The awards are peer-nominated,
which means other volunteers and staff
members can nominate a volunteer they
feel is deserving of the honour.
In the inaugural year there were 10
nominations received!
All nominees were deserving but in
the end the winners were Debbie Petrie,
Nancy Strachan and Mary Cottrell.
Between them these women have
contributed more than 30 years to the
hospital in areas from the patient units
to health records, x-ray and the coffee
bar, to name a few. Because they are
so active many patients and visitors
would recognize them even outside of
the hospital.
Winners were announced at the annual
Board Awards and Service Recognition
dinner held by the hospital each fall and
each of the women received a custom
glass piece designed and hand-made by
Linda Bennett.
Exceptional Volunteer Award Winners Nancy Strachan, Debbie Petrie and Mary Cottrell
Georgian Bay General Hospital was presented with a Bronze Quality Healthcare Workplace Award
in November 2014. The awards program recognizes organizational efforts to improve healthcare
workplaces in ways that contribute to providers’ quality of work life and the quality of the care and
services they deliver.

Meet CHRISEDWARDS…
Industry Leader, Foundation Donor
is an area that everyone needs,
“andTheashospital
a corporation in this community, Weber
wants to give back.” – Chris Edwards
C
hris was born and raised
in this community; he attended St. Theresa’s High
School and is now the President at
Weber Manufacturing Technologies
Inc. Growing up in Tay Township, Chris
was familiar with the hospital, but it
wasn’t until a couple years ago that he
got the opportunity for an inside look.
In March 2013, Chris attended the
“Breakfast of Champions”, hosted by
the Foundation at Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH). It was here he
first learned that hospital equipment
and capital expenditures are not supported by our government. While government funding does pay for the operational costs of health care, such
as salaries, medication and hydro,
the crucial equipment used for our
best care, like beds, monitors, x-ray
machines and stretchers, is not. The
funds for these essential tools come
from generous donations from our
community.
“To this day I find it hard to believe
that government funding does not fully
support the hospital,” says Chris. “It’s
a strange thought to think that they
[the government] would say, here’s a
hospital, we can build it, but everything
else that allows a hospital to function
is not supported.”
The Breakfast of Champions is an
opportunity for members of the community to see the hospital on a private tour, ask questions of CEO Karen
McGrath and enjoy a hot breakfast.
After attending, Chris walked away
knowing what the needs are at GBGH.
There was no question about what he
felt he needed to do to support the
community’s health care system.
“It [Breakfast of Champions] opened
my eyes to what the hospital needed,”
Chris says.
Following his attendance at the
Breakfast of Champions, Chris committed to a donation of $10,000
from Weber Manufacturing (over three
years), but successfully fulfilled that
commitment within the first year. And,
Weber Manufacturing hasn’t stopped
there! Not only has Weber Manufacturing committed an additional $10,000
in 2015, but in October 2014, for the
GBGH annual Gala, Weber donated a
high-end door system, in partnership
with Templeton Windows and Strassburger Windows and Doors. The door
was auctioned off at the event, with
Midland Mayor Gord McKay as the
GBGH 2015

lucky winner of the item, which raised
an amazing $5,000 for the Foundation.
We want to say THANK YOU to Chris
Edwards and Weber Manufacturing
Technologies Inc. for the generous donations they have made and continue to
give to the GBGH Foundation.

Meet BOBBURK…
Volunteer, Donor, Patient and Champion of the Foundation Cornerstone Partners
You have to believe in the reason to do
“fundraising.
It is a commitment to the belief
that you can make a difference that
moves us forward. – Bob Burk
”
Bob and his wife Sheila
T
en years ago, Bob was given a
second chance at life: “GBGH
gave me the greatest gift of
all when our physicians saved my life.
At the time I had not realized that the
equipment used to stabilize me and
keep me going had all been donated
by fellow community members. Thanks
to their generous support I am here today, sharing and taking part in precious
moments with my grandchildren, family and friends.” Since then, Bob has
become an incredible champion for the
GBGH Foundation both by volunteering
his time, and as a donor.
As one of the early members of the
Royal Victoria Hospital Society, Bob
has spent the past six months working
tirelessly to bring a similar program to
GBGH. The strategy behind the Cornerstone Partners is simple: if 200-300 key
supporters pool their yearly donations
together, they can contribute $500,000
annually to our hospital. This enables
our hospital management team to better plan ahead because they know this
annual support will be there. As well, it
allows our Foundation to focus on other
fundraising initiatives.
Through personal meetings, letters
and phone calls, Bob has reached
out to over 75 donors with incredible
success! As of March 31, 2015 the
Cornerstone Partners has 59 members who combined have committed to
gifting over $103,000 annually. Each
year, members will know exactly what
important equipment their donations

are purchasing for the Georgian Bay
General Hospital. Being a member of
the Cornerstone Partners is a chance
to make an ongoing and lasting impact
on your hospital, ensuring that our physicians and nurses have the best tools

Shining a Light on Pain Relief
Ontario registered acupuncturist
and internationally trained
Medical Doctor, Stan Chikh
believes in not masking the
symptoms but treating
the cause of the
symptoms. That’s why
he’s opened Pro Motion
Health Care at 211
Ferndale Dr. S., unit 4.
Stan’s focus is on pain
management
from
head to toe and he has
the expertise to relieve
symptoms often from
the first treatment.
Putting the patients first, Stan
said his passion has always been
in alternative medicine.
In fact, while at medical school
in the United States, he acquired
his acupuncture license, which
led to his start in Toronto
rehabilitation clinics.
Opening a Barrie business a
few months ago, Stan uses his
knowledge to treat the root
cause of pain.
“Having a medical background
and clinical experience allows
me to look at holistic medicine
from a different point of view,”
he said.
“Both Western and Eastern
medicine plays a big role in my
practice.”
As clinical co-ordinator of Pro
Motion Health Care, Stan offers a
range of services and products,
including acupuncture, cold
laser
therapy,
chiropodist
and reflexology along with
orthopedic braces, custommade orthotics, compression
hosiery and much more.
In addition, a large selection
of
orthotic-friendly
shoes
as well as retail fashion and
comfort footwear is available for
purchase.
Assisting every patient’s needs,
Pro Motion Health Care offers
friendly
customer
service with a free initial
assessment.
“Common complaints
are lower back pain or
shoulder pain,” Stan
said.
As a treatment, he uses
acupuncture and cold
laser therapy combined
for better results.
The MEDx cold laser is a small,
handheld device that uses light
energy to stimulate production
of new capillaries, endorphins
and collagen by improving
cellular metabolism.
It results in faster tissue repair,
quicker healing, decreased pain
and a speedy return to normal
function.
For those timid of traditional
acupuncture
needles,
Pro
Motion Health Care also has a
needle-free option, which can
be equally effective in treating
pain and Stan will walk every
patient through the procedure.

Meet FRANKBERDAN…
Volunteer, Donor and Boaters for Best Care Champion
one will understand the value
“ofNoa hospital
until they are in an
emergency situation. This is a place
that will save your life!
– Frank Berdan
”
F
rank Berdan is the vice
president
of
Commercial
Banking at RBC, and also plays
countless behind the scenes roles
fundraising for a variety of causes. A
very important project Frank is a part of
is “Boaters for Best Care”, a Georgian
Bay General Hospital Foundation
(GBGHF) initiative that is reaching out
to our seasonal boaters and giving
them the opportunity to support their
local emergency department.
Growing up in the Midland area,
Frank witnessed first-hand how the
hospital has helped the local and
seasonal communities. Recognizing
that the most crucial and busiest time
of year for GBGH is during the summer,
when boaters and cottagers join this
community, Frank came up with the
idea of working with the local marinas
to get the Foundation’s message to
their boaters.
“Marina operators,” says Frank,
“recognize that there’s a need for
emergency care.”
He explains that while boaters coming
into the area may not be seeking longterm care at GBGH or coming in for preplanned day surgery, boaters do come
up to enjoy their home away from home
and as such the Georgian Bay General
Hospital becomes just that – their
hospital away from home.
Our GBGH benefits the seasonal
guests just as much as it does the
local patients who have a presence
year round.
“Think about it: if you get bitten by
a rattle snake – you go to the closest
hospital. Or maybe you are injured out
on a boat. GBGH provides you with the
emergency care you need, at any time,”
Frank explains.
In order to continue to provide
all patients with the best care, the
GBGH 2015

Emergency Department at GBGH is
undergoing a three-phase expansion
and revitalization. Already, community
donors
have
generously
gifted
$4.6-million through the Foundation for
the project. The Boaters for Best Care
initiative plans to raise $1-million over
three years to support the Emergency
Department revitalization and the new
CT scanner.
We want to say THANK YOU to
Frank Berdan for the incredible gifts
of time and support he has given to
the Georgian Bay General Hospital

Volunteers
Keep Patients in Motion at GBGH
V
olunteers at Georgian Bay General
Hospital play many key roles in the
delivery of Exceptional Care, Every
Person, Every Time.
One of those roles is helping patients to stay
alert and mobile.
Hospital stays can lead to an increased risk
of functional decline and in some cases delirium for our older patients, and this is where the
Georgian Bay General Hospital Volunteer Association plays an important role in better patient
outcomes.
Functional decline refers to a series of bodily
changes that can result in the loss of muscle
strength and mobility, while delirium is new
mental confusion that develops over hours or
days and can be caused by new or altered medications, dehydration, infections, decreased
oxygen and other medical conditions.
Muscles and Minds – Patients In Motion Program at GBGH is a volunteer-based program
designed to prevent delirium and functional decline in the elderly during a hospital stay and
GBGH 2015

help to improve the patient’s quality of life both
during and after their time in hospital. Volunteers are trained specifically for the program
and patients at risk are referred to the program
by front-line hospital staff.
Friendly one-on-one visits by volunteers are
designed to keep the patients familiar with
their surroundings and provide social support,
thereby alleviating anxiety. Therapeutic activities such as music, games, puzzles and reading provide mental stimulation and can also
lead to conversation.
Daily range-of-motion exercises can be done
while the patient is in bed or in a chair. Volunteers assist with these exercises, which prevent loss of muscle strength and promote joint
flexibility. When deemed appropriate by hospital staff, volunteers also encourage patients to
keep physically active by taking them for a walk
in the hall.

A FULL LIFE WITH
Phil DeBruyne and County Warden Gerry Marshall
M
y name is Phil DeBruyne,
and my wife Susan and
I are residents of Tiny
Township and proud annual supporters
of Georgian Bay General Hospital
Foundation.
This is where my story begins: I have
been blessed with good health all my
life. But one year ago, I was sitting at
my computer at home when I felt a
sharp pain on the back of my neck and
thanks
immediately experienced
double vision. I went to
our local hospital and
the initial prognosis was
they believed it was a
vision issue, but the
doctor in emergency told
me to come back in two
days regardless of how
I felt. Two days later I
was back with respiratory
problems and admitted to
ICU.
I was most fortunate
to have two internists
diagnose me with what
they
believed
was
Myasthenia Gravis (attack
on
the
autoimmune
system). I understand
about one in 10,000
people are affected with
this. As a result of this quick diagnosis,
I was transferred to St. Michael’s
Hospital in Toronto. I was in respiratory
crisis, lost my speech and my ability to
see from one eye, sometimes both eyes
because my disease blocks messages
from the brain to my muscle functions.
I could not swallow, and tasks as simple
as lifting a jug of water were no longer
possible. I spent a month in St Michael’s
GBGH 2015
19
hospital before being transferred back
to GBGH. Here, I worked with a dietician
and speech pathologist; shortly after, I
was transferred to the rehab centre for
two weeks up to my discharge. There is
no cure for my disease but I can control
it with medication and exercise.
My stay at GBGH allowed me to see a
side of the hospital I did not see when I
was a Foundation Board member. I was
cared for by dedicated doctors, nurses,
support staff, students and volunteers
who worked very hard.
Our local
Emergency Department, in my view, is
responsible for saving so many lives,
and I won’t forget what they did for me
on my admission.
The message I want to leave with you
today is that our hospital needs our
support. I was fortunate to be a part
of a team initiative in memory of Gord
Leonard, where a community raised
over $100,000 to sponsor the Quiet
Room in the Emergency Department
at the Georgian Bay General Hospital,
so I know first-hand it is possible to do
great things. As individuals we all can
do so much, from annual contributions
to supporting charitable events and
through legacy giving.
I am living a full life, and thankful for
our local hospital.

Georgian Bay General Hospital/
Manidoo
Gaaming
Niisaajoong
Aakoziigamig (GBGH) took a big step
forward last year in the effort to better
serve our community.
A partnership with the Georgian Bay
Native Women’s Association allowed
the hospital to better meet the diverse
and unique needs of First Nation, Métis
and Inuit patients at the hospital.
Sara Monague took on the role of
Aboriginal Patient Navigator at the
hospital in December. Ms. Monague
is available to both guide patients and
help the hospital address the traditional
culture and beliefs of Aboriginal people.
“We were thrilled to partner with
the GBNWA to realize this goal,” says
Jackie McLauchlin-Welch, Director of
Communications and Health Information.
“When we opened Neegaan Naabwag
(Healing Room) in 2011 we knew there
was much more work to be done, and
we are grateful to GBNWA for helping us
take another step in our journey.”
Sara is a member of the Beausoleil
First Nation. She and McLauchlin-Welch
have been working to develop the scope
of the position based on feedback from
the community, as well as to address
gaps that have been identified by
patients. Included will be addressing
the needs of the staff, volunteers and
physicians at the hospital so they also
benefit from Sara’s presence through
training and greater understanding.
Sara has been working a flexible
schedule as she is often called to attend
the Emergency Department with Band
members coming from Christian Island
as well as arranging smudges and pipe
ceremonies for patients at the hospital.
“GBGH values speak to inclusiveness
and respect, and this new endeavour
provides us another opportunity to
ensure we are living our values,” says
president and CEO Karen McGrath.
Under the terms of the partnership
the position is funded through a grant
obtained by the Native Women’s
Association.
Midwives of Nottawasaga with the GBGH OB Staff
N
Choices
ew moms in the MidlandPenetanguishene area now
have more options when it
comes time to deciding not only where
the baby will be born but also who will
assist in the birth.
Georgian Bay General Hospital
joined the growing provincial list of
hospitals with midwives at the birthing
table last March, as nine members
of the Midwives of Nottawasaga were
credentialed to provide care at the
hospital.
The group currently looks after 230
births a year – many in the Collingwood
area — and until now moms from the
Midland-Penetanguishene area had to
travel to that community if they preferred
to give birth in a hospital. (Local moms
could have a midwife-assisted birth at
for New Moms
home; about 22% of all midwife clients
deliver at home every year.)
On average the nine-member group
has about 15 clients from this area
of North Simcoe on their roster every
month.
The philosophies on which midwifery
are based are very simple, says Jane
Flindall: continuity of care, informed
choice and choice of birthplace.
While the Midwives of Nottawasaga
are based in Collingwood they offer
a clinic in Midland two days a week,
at the Chigamik Community Health
Centre.
The credentialing process allows
them to come into the hospital and
assist in the delivery of babies with
their clients.
Midwives are funded through the
GBGH 2015
29
Ministry of Health and there is no
charge to the patient. A midwife
will follow a woman throughout her
pregnancy, during birth and six weeks
after to make sure things are still going
well. There is no referral necessary, just
a phone call to book an appointment
when a woman first finds out she is
pregnant.
In the hospital the midwife will arrive
with an assistant for the actual birth
and only if a new mom opts to stay in
hospital will there be a transfer of care
to a hospitalist physician – otherwise,
many new moms and babies are on the
way home four hours after delivery.

Checking in
G
eorgian Bay General Hospital
took patient registration to a
whole new level last year with
the introduction of Self-Check-In and
triage in the Emergency Department;
somewhat of a first in Canada!
The Self-Check-In kiosk is simply an
iPad in a locked enclosure on a stand
– they were first introduced in the hospital’s central registration area where
all outpatients register (lab, DI, surgical
and ambulatory care patients) before
the project expanded to include the
Emergency Department.
GBGH’s Emergency Department sees
45,000 patients a year and the central

registration area registers 200 patients
a day.
In the central registration area a swipe
of a health card and verification of some
information means the registration process is faster, with only a quick stop to
receive an armband from the clerk (for
lab patients the armband isn’t even necessary).
While Self-Check-In may not be new to
the landscape, taking it a step further
and actually using the same technology by having patients answer their own
triage questions is cutting-edge. This
assists the triage nurses with a more
accurate in-the-door time and ability to
prioritize the patients efficiently.
In the Emergency Department, SelfCheck-In with triage takes some of the
load off.
“When we are registering and triaging
that many patients a day you can imagine how difficult it is when we can only
allocate one nurse and one clerk to the
job,” says Sheree Noon, manager of the
Emergency Department.
“Patients still see the triage nurse
but it reduces the time it takes to input
the standard questions and answers a
triage nurse goes through,” adds Ms.
Noon. “And when we can remove some
of the data input it gives more time for
direct patient care.”
The hospital has hosted visits from
hospitals across Ontario to view the
new system in action, and representatives of the Information Systems department have presented at international
conferences.

Supporting our local hospitals
The Simcoe County Hospital Funding Alliance was established in 2002 to anticipate and respond to our community needs
and to ensure this health-care funding was distributed equitably across all of our local hospitals I contributed up to $3 Million
annually to support the capital needs of our hospitals between 2002-2006 I renewed funding agreement in 2007 with a new term
that provides $3 Million annually over the following decade, ending in 2016 I broadened the membership of this funding alliance in
2010 to include Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, and will include this hospital in considering future funding beyond 2016
Through this generous history of funding, the County has been
an instrumental partner in many hospital projects, including:
 Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital expansion
Southlake Regional Health Centre Cancer Care Centre
 Stevenson Memorial Emergency facilities renovation
Collingwood General and Marine Hospital redevelopment
 Georgian Bay General Hospital expansion
Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre Cancer Care Centre

Meet GERARDLACHAPELLE…
Volunteer, Donor, Legacy Builder
I
n 2006, Gerard’s wife, Gail lost
her battle with pancreatic cancer.
For the past nine years, Gerard
and his family have worked to turn their
heartbreaking loss into a legacy that
will continue to serve the Georgian Bay
General Hospital and this community
for years to come.
As a wife, mother of four and nurse,
Gail instilled in her family and friends a
desire for lifelong learning, commitment
to a cause and the will to make things
better. As a tribute to her passion
and dedication, Gerard set out to do
something to encourage and support
individuals like Gail who are pursuing
their nursing dreams.
In December 2007, Gerard and
his family presented the first Gail
LaChapelle Memorial Fund award to a
deserving nursing student. This special
bursary honours one nursing student
every year, and supports both those in
school full-time and also the working
moms who juggle their jobs, children
and continuing nursing education. In
addition, education grants are made
available each year to nursing students
who are committed to furthering their
nursing education. Each year, the
Gail LaChapelle Memorial Bursary &
Education Fund gives $6,000 to nurses
who embody the values that Gail was
known for.
Further to the education funding,
Gerard has also made a number
of significant contributions to the
new Emergency Department.
He
has already contributed $50,000
for two new treatment rooms, and
most recently committed to raising
an additional $100,000 for the new
Nursing Communication Centre that will
be named in Gail’s honour.
To raise these funds, Gerard, with the

G
eorgian Bay General Hospital takes
pride in providing Exceptional Care,
Every Person, Every Time and it is
people like Cheryl Latondress that make
that possible.
Cheryl is an RPN who last year was the
first in the province to receive the Palliative
Care Nursing designation by the de Souza
Institute.
Cheryl completed more than 150 hours
of continuing education in cancer/palliative
care to earn the prestigious de Souza Nurse
Associate Designation. This Designation
showcases advanced knowledge and
expertise in palliative care.
It was that kind of dedication that made
Cheryl the perfect candidate for the Robbert

Meet YOUR LOCAL LIONS CLUBS…
Volunteers, Community Builders
Representatives from the Zone 36 West Lions Clubs
I
t seems as though wherever
there’s a need, there’s always a
Lion eager to help. The Zone 36
West Lions Clubs are seven separate
Lions Clubs who provide support
to their respective communities of
Penetanguishene, Midland, Victoria
Harbour, Coldwater, Port McNicoll,
Waubaushene and Tiny.
Lions clubs are best known for
hosting summer BBQs and lively BINGO
nights, to help fundraise for charities
like the Canadian Diabetes Association,
CNIB, Lions Foundation of Canada Dog
Guides and for relief efforts in Nepal.
“As well as fundraising outside of
the local area,” says local Lions Club
member, Randy, “we also raise funds to
help within the community.”
In 2014, the seven clubs came
together to support the annual needs
of four local camps and pledged
$111,000 toward four triage bays in
the new Emergency Department at
Georgian Bay General Hospital!
To raise these funds, the Zone 36
West Lions Clubs came together in
September 2014 for “The GREAT Walk”
in support of the GBGH Foundation.
Based on the success of this inaugural
event, the clubs are planning another
walk in 2015.

Since 1998, the seven Lions Clubs
have raised a total of $204,050 for the
GBGH Foundation!
We want to say THANK YOU to Lions
Clubs in Penetanguishene, Midland,
Victoria Harbour, Coldwater, Port
McNicoll, Waubaushene and Tiny for
the generous donations they have
made and continue to give to the GBGH
Foundation.

I
t’s hard to believe that this year
marks the 10th anniversary of the
annual Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation gala! For the past
nine years, your community has come
together for this annual evening of fun,
while raising an astonishing total of
$700,000 to purchase much-needed
equipment for your hospital!
This year, this incredible event is raising $90,000 to purchase a new Bipap
machine for the ICU and four Medical
Carts for our 2 North unit at Georgian
Bay General Hospital.
The theme for our 10th anniversary is
Around the World – A Global Affair! In
honour of the 10th anniversary, this evening will feature ten tantalizing dishes
from each of our ten featured countries,
prepared by ten top local chefs. As our
guests mix and mingle, enjoying the
tastes of our global affair, they will be
treated to an array of international music and entertained by local and professional costumed actors.
As guests continue their journey “Around
the World”, they will gather together for
a Live Auction and an incredible musical
performance, followed by dancing late
into the night.

$300,000!

“The Town of Penetanguishene

– Mayor Gerry Marshall, Town of
Penetanguishene
The Towns of Midland and
Penetanguishene, as well as Tay and
Tiny Townships are strong supporters
of the Georgian Bay General Hospital
Foundation. For many years, the local
municipalities have been supporting

Georgian Bay General Hospital. When
the respective councils learned of your
hospital’s need to replace an aging
CT Scanner, they gladly directed their
annual pledges toward this important
hospital initiative.

community and the need for the latest
most up to date equipment including
the CT Scanner. A well-equipped
hospital is necessary to provide first
rate health care for all the residents of
North Simcoe.” – Mayor Scott Warnock,
Township of Tay
The CT scanner is a crucial tool
that staff rely on to quickly identify
and diagnose injuries that require
immediate treatment. It is also the
primary tool used to diagnose patients
with chest pain, head trauma, injuries to
hands, feet and uncontrolled bleeding.
Without a CT scanner, your hospital
cannot function effectively, and lives
will be at risk.
“The Township of Tiny Council
recognizes that high quality health
care is fundamental to the overall wellbeing of our community. As such we are
pleased to support our local hospital and
ER department by contributing to the
purchase of much needed equipment
such as the current campaign for a
CT Scanner.” – Mayor George Cornell,
Township of Tiny
Combined, your local municipalities
have pledged $300,000 over three
years toward the estimated $1.6 million
cost of the new CT Scanner! We want
to say THANK YOU to the residents
and council members for their ongoing
support of the Georgian Bay General
Hospital!

The Tripp’s
Revival
Twenty years ago, Lesley and Jamie moved to Midland
and purchased the Lamers Paint & Wallpaper store. The
business eventually outgrew the space and moved to the
larger 259 King Street location. With continued growth
over the years, Tripp’s expanded into the Revival Furniture
phase. Besides being the go to destination for Benjamin
Moore paint and decorating advice and supply of industry
products, Tripp’s Revival Furniture inspires and revives solid
wood furniture. Very specific pieces are selected for value
and quality and sold as is or revived with repair and paint.
Either way Tripp’s creativity ensures good furniture stays
treasured and out of landfills.
BEFORE
AFTER
Renewal
The Tripp’s
The exterior, painted in 2001 by Darrin Marchand, was
showing its age. The brick was too old to hold coatings
and the original awning sign was dated. After looking at
historic pictures of the Midland downtown and seeing the
original wood buildings, Jamie contacted long-time friend
and customer Rob Marchand of Rob Marchand Construction
(Darrin’s younger brother). Rob’s team immediately
understood Jamie’s vision and designed and refaced the front
and back. The dramatic change and customer feedback has
been constant and hugely positive. Jamie also thanks Cyndi
Shepherd and Steve Barber for their work on the smaller signs
and Allistair Hair of SunSport Signs who installed all of the
signage and produced the main Benjamin Moore signs.
