CATHOLIC
EDUCATION
TEACHES
GRACE
"Through the
grace involved
in the family's
commitment
to Catholic
education, God draws the entire family closer to
Himself. I have witnessed the faith of families
renewed, families return to the practice of their
faith, and students and families request Baptism
through their experience in our Catholic schools.
We teach the students that our goal is heaven.
All our words and actions must reflect this goal.
The more our life reflects Jesus, the more virtuous
we are, the more we live out our faith through
prayer, sacraments, and good works. God’s life in
us—grace—will increase. As a principal, I am
extremely grateful to the benefactors of the CMAA
for their generosity. Your gifts are transforming the
lives of children and families each day in the
Diocese of Joliet."

one thousand. The first twelve stand for the Old Israel, the
second twelve for the New Israel. The 144,000 is the Old
and New Israel, multiplied many times over (1,000). This
is therefore not the number of people who are going to
heaven, but rather their spiritual identity. This idea is
presented in this reading. The number to heaven is
numberless. They have been redeemed with the blood of
the Lamb. They have given witness to their faith through
their own suffering. They will now enter into their peace
(every tear will be wiped away).

WORD
 GOSPEL
Sunday,
April 17, 2016
THIS WEEK’S FOCUS:
WHOSE VOICE DO YOU FOLLOW?
We can often recognize those closest to us — even without
seeing them—just by hearing them speak.
 FIRST READING
The Jews angrily reject Paul and Barnabas. They then turn
their energies to the Gentiles (Acts 13:14, 43-52).
Saint Paul would enter the synagogue in whichever city
he would visit. There he would preach to the Jews and the
God-fearers of the city. (God-fearers were pagans who
were sympathetic to the Jewish faith but did not observe
the entire law.) They would listen to Paul for a few weeks,
but then would become jealous and reject him. Paul
would then reach out to the pagans of the city. He would
often preach to them in the marketplace where crowds
would gather during the day. This served to allow him to
address large numbers of people at one time, but also to
encounter people of the entire region (for they would
come to market with their produce and hear Paul there).
The Gentiles were eager to listen to the kerygma and
embrace the Good News. This infuriated the Jews from the
synagogue who then incited people against the apostles.
Paul and his companions were inevitably expelled, yet
they had planted the Gospel there and left a small
community.
 SECOND READING
John envisions a great white-robed multitude standing
before the throne and the Lamb. (Rev 7:9, 14b-17).
We are given a vision of heaven. In the verses before this
passage we hear that the number of those going to heaven
would be 144,000. This was twelve times twelve times
My sheep hear my voice; they follow me. I give them eternal
life (John 10:27-30).
The Gospel is a short passage from Jesus’ proclamation
that He is the Good Shepherd. Jesus does not proclaim this
on His own authority, but rather because the Father has
appointed Him to this role. The Gospel of John
continuously repeats the theme that Jesus must obey the
will of the Father (for He and the Father are One). The will
of the Father is to reveal to us how much God loves us.
(This Gospel presents the cross as the most powerful
example of that love.)
 REFLECTION
When we have been close to others, we know their voices,
laughs, and presence and do what we can to reconnect.
Such was the intimacy Jesus describes in next week’s
Gospel. Such is the intimacy Jesus seeks with all who
believe in Him. The Jewish leaders in Antioch were not as
inclusive in how they understood God’s love as Paul and
Barnabas were. They could not or would not accept that
Christ was a light to the Gentiles and offered salvation to
all. Because they narrowly defined who belonged and who
did not, they could not or would not accept people who
heard and followed Jesus’ voice outside their narrow
definition. They had Paul and Barnabas expelled because
the leaders were not ready to believe that God could call
anyone other than their own kind. This has been true
throughout history. Our narrow definition of who can
hear the voice of God, Christ, or the Spirit has persecuted
people who believe differently than we do. We start
crusades and holocausts, build walls, and even kill those
who refuse to convert to a certain faith. The Body of
Christ has been divided by narrow definitions of “truth”.
God’s love is much more inclusive. John’s vision pictures a
great multitude from every nation, race, people, and
tongue before God’s throne. We might be surprised by
who stands next to us before the throne of the Lamb
because they know Him intimately, heard His voice, and
followed. If God is that welcoming, can we be any less?

Second collection next weekend, April 23 and April 24. Please be generous.
A LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Church has great needs around the world, and unfortunately our nation is
no exception. Many dioceses here at home face challenges due to priest
shortages, remote geography, or due to the fact that their parishes are in
impoverished communities. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal answers these
needs by providing grants to these dioceses.
Forty-two percent of all dioceses in the United States receive Catholic Home
Missions support for evangelization, catechesis, ministry formation, and other
areas of faith development. Your support of this collection will help your
neighbors here in the United States and strengthen the Church at home.
Your support of this collection will help your neighbors here in the United States
and strengthen the Church at home. In 2015, the bishops’ Subcommittee on
Catholic Home Missions provided grant money as nearby as the Diocese of
Belleville in Illinois and the Diocese of Kalamazoo in Michigan, supporting their
outreach to migrant communities and to provide ministry to those who live and
work in remote and rural areas. The Diocese of Jackson in Mississippi has some
of the highest numbers of families living in poverty, so grants from the Catholic
Home Missions Appeal make it possible for the Diocese of Jackson to pay for the
education of their 10 seminarians, among other things.
Mission dioceses often struggle with isolation and a lack of educated pastoral
and lay leadership. With your support, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal can
continue to provide catechesis, lay leadership training, funding for seminarian
education, and other essential pastoral outreach in our home mission dioceses.
On the weekend of April 23-24, please be generous in the Catholic Home
Missions Appeal and help strengthen the Church at home. Your support
will truly make a difference.
Thank you, and God bless you,
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
Bishop of Joliet

The Reflections of
Pope John Paul II
PROGRESS AND THE MODERN WORLD
Men and women are made in the image and likeness
of God. So people may never be regarded as
mere objects, nor may they be sacrificed for
political, economic, or social gain. We must
never allow them to be manipulated or
enslaved by ideologies or technology.
Their God-given dignity and worth
as human beings forbid this.
GREETING TO THE U.N. STAFF, 1995
APRIL 17
When the scale of values is inverted and politics,
the economy, and social activity are no longer placed at
the service of people, the human person comes to be
viewed as a means rather than respected as the center
and end of all these activities, and man is made to
suffer in his essence and in his transcendent
dimension. Human beings are then seen simply as
consumers, and freedom is understood in a very
individualistic and reductive sense, or men and women
are seen as mere producers with little room for the
exercise of civil and political liberties. None of these
social and political models fosters a climate of
openness to the transcendence of the person who
freely seeks God.
— MEETING WITH CUBAN BISHOPS, 1998
Justice will never be fully attained unless people see
in the poor person, who is asking for help in order to
survive, not an annoyance or a burden, but an
opportunity for showing kindness and a chance for
greater enrichment. Only such an awareness can give
the courage needed to face the risk and the change
involved in every authentic attempt to come to the aid
of another.
— CENTESIMUS ANNUS
Let us work together so that everyone may have bread.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY:
DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
This Sunday celebrates Jesus as “the Good Shepherd.”
When announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope
Francis focused on Jesus’ “lost sheep” parable in Luke.
“[Who] among you,” Jesus asks, “Having a hundred
sheep and losing one of them would not leave the
99 in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds
it?” (Luke 15:4). A reasonable answer? “No responsible
shepherd who wants to keep the job!” Yet Jesus considers
one lost person supremely important and suggests
blaming the shepherd. The sheep didn’t “go astray,” the
shepherd “lost” it. Thus, “when he does find it, he sets it
on his shoulders with great joy” (15:5). That tender image
of Jesus adorns the simple cross Pope Francis has always
worn, the Good Shepherd gently carrying the lost sheep
home on his shoulders. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy,
may we, who once were lost ourselves but now are found,
join Jesus in seeking, finding, and gently carrying home at
least one precious lamb.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
ST. ANTHONY CONFERENCE
Today, we celebrate “Good Shepherd
Sunday” where we reflect on Jesus’ care
and love of us. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul will show that you are indeed the disciple of Jesus,
the Good Shepherd, as it will bring your love to those who
live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

THE ART OF ZENTANGLE
Monday, April 18 6:30-9 am Fee: $25
Zentangle is a form of "artistic meditation" and a
helpful way to unwind from stress, focus your
thoughts, and enter a more contemplative space "one
stroke at a time”. During this session, you will create
tiles using color and the repetitive patterns and
deliberate pen strokes of the Zentangle art form.
Different patterns will be taught than were used in
the fall session. Supplies will be provided. Anyone
can do it! Facilitator: Starla Sneed began her study
of calligraphy in 2003, became a professional
engraver in 2011, and is a Certified Zentangle
Teacher.
GARDENING AND SPIRITUALITY:
THIS REALLY IS HOLY GROUND
Monday, April 25 9:30 am-Noon Fee: $20
As we explore the very real interrelation between
gardening and spirituality you will have the
opportunity to connect your faith more intimately to
what is happening in the unfolding of life and growth
in creation. Let one who loves working with the soil
and with plants share her experience and find your
own relationship with the earth deepened and made
sacred. Facilitator: Rose Madonna Gibbons, OSF is
a Sister of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception
who serves the elderly and their families in
Springfield, IL. Her love of gardening and her delight
in creating beautiful spaces has been demonstrated
in the hosta peace garden at her Motherhouse, the
flower gardens where she has ministered and in her
arrangement of flowers in the chapels where she has
served as sacristan.

W
hen a friend
starts calling
your house,
usually you must ask who
is calling. At some point,
however, you know each
other well enough that you
no longer need to identify
yourself on the phone.
In today's Gospel,
Jesus refers to this
knowledge of another's
voice as a description of His
relationship with His
followers. Jesus also
describes His relationship
with the Father, Jesus
describes this relationship
by saying they are one.
This means that to know
Jesus is to know the
Father. Jesus doesn't just
bring us closer to the
Father, Jesus puts us
directly into contact with
God the Father, removing
all distance between us.
Throughout our life,
we hope and pray that
we will grow ever closer
to God as we learn to
follow Jesus more fully.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
For Children:
 Jesus said “My sheep
hear my voice; I know
them, and they follow
Me.” How does Jesus
speak to you? What new
path is He asking of you?
For Adults:
 What is your
experience of being a
follower of Christ, of
being cared for and
guarded with Him as
shepherd?
CATECHIST CORNER
Why is Jesus Christ the Lord
of the Whole World?
Jesus Christ is Lord of the world and Lord of
history because everything was made for His
sake. All men were redeemed by Him and will be
judged by Him. He is over us, and the only One
to whom we bend the knee in worship; He is
with us as Head of His Church, in which the
kingdom of God begins even now; He is ahead of
us as Lord of history, in whom the powers of
darkness are definitively overcome and the
destinies of the world are brought to perfection
according to God's plan; He comes to meet us in
glory, on a day we do not know, to renew and
perfect the world. We can experience His
nearness especially in God's Word, in the
reception of the sacraments, in caring for the
poor, and wherever "two or three are gathered in
My name" (see Mt 18:20). (YOUCAT question
