What’s going on at AMCA?
Nursery:
The Nursery Class’ motto is “Nurturing Nursery”. They are a respectful group of three year olds that love to play and be creative. With the help of their teacher and aides, they are learning the numbers one through ten in math. They are learning the
alphabet and how to read. They are also learning how to say the
Pledge of Allegiance and prayers. This Trimester they each received the “Hail Mary Award” because each of one of them were
able to memorize and recite our Blessed Mother’s prayer. This
year, Nursery and their Student Council representatives will be
working on how to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
They are also
learning the rules of school, along with why they are essential
to follow.
Pre-Kindergarten:
The Pre-Kindergarten’s motto is “Pre-K Perfection”. They are
a fun group of four year olds that love to smile and laugh. With
the help of their teacher, Mrs. Drucker, and their dedicated
aide, Mrs. Russo, they are learning how to count numbers six
through ten, and are also learning letters G/g and H/h. They are
following the Super Kids Curriculum, and are reading the story
“The Elf in the Shoe.” They are also learning three dimensional
shapes, such as the sphere, cone, cube, and rectangular prism.
With their Student Council representatives, they are going to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Kindergarten:
Kindergarten’s motto is “Kindergarten Kindness”. They are an
outgoing group of five year olds who love to learn. In Math, the
Kindergarten is learning how to write numbers in number order.
They are also earning how to put words together. They are learning the letter sound “E/e.” In Religion, the Kindergarten and
their Student Council representatives will be working on learning
how to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
First Grade:
The First Grade’s motto is “Be Respectful”. The First Grade class is an exciting group of six year olds. They are learning
about adding and subtracting one digit integers in math.
This
will be the foundation of their future education.
In Social
Studies, they are learning about citizenship, which teaches them
how to be good citizens.
The students are following the Super
Kids curriculum.
In Religion class, they are reading stories
from the Bible.
Second Grade:
In Second Grade, the students are learning numerous things in
all subject areas. In ELA, they are studying synonyms and antonyms. In Phonics, the students are learning about the parts of a
letter and similes.
In Math, they are learning how to add and
subtract two-digit integers. In Science, they are examining the
system of the human body. In Social Studies, they are learning
about the characteristics of different types of communities.
Lastly, in Religion, they are studying the sacraments of Baptism
and Confirmation.
Third Grade:
The Third Grade is a responsible group of eight year olds.
In Math, the third grade is learning the multiplication facts.
They are also being taught by Mrs. Holmes on Wednesday.
Mrs.
Holmes is teaching them addition when using three digit numbers.
In Science, they are learning what animals need to survive and
how the environment meets the needs of the animals. This class
is very caring, and they want to help as many people as they can.
In ELA, they are learning the main and helping verbs, and reading
a folktale called “Pushing up the Sky.” In Social Studies, they
are learning the branches of the government and the laws of our
community.
In Religion, they are learning about the Catholic
Church. They are also learning to recognize that the Church is
guided by the Holy Spirit to teach the truth. They are working
on donating money and food to charities with their representative.
Fourth Grade:
The Fourth Grade students are learning fun and exciting
things in all subject areas. In Math, they are learning different
strategies to multiply double digits by double digits. They have
practiced “Lattice Multiplication”, “The Distributive Property”,
“Basic Algorithm”, and “Area Models”. In Science, they are learning how instinctive behaviors help animals survive and meet their
needs. In History, they are learning about Early People of New
York, and they are writing stories geared toward adventures. In
E.L.A., they are learning about main and helping verbs; they are
also reading a story about Adelina’s Whales. In Religion, they
are learning about the Ten Commandments. The Fourth grade, is a
smart and wonderful group of kids. They are very intelligent, and
they will continue to progress in all subject areas, here at Ave
Maria Catholic Academy.
Fifth Grade:
In Social Studies, the Fifth Grade is doing current event research with international and national articles. They are also
analyzing various people who helped form the New England colonies. In Science, their class is examining the variety of structures that plants have and how they carry out life processes. In
Math, they are learning general math, including fractions and
number theory. They’re also working on designing a dread bedroom with geometry, budgeting, and creativity. In Religion, the Fifth
Grade
In ELA, the fifth graders are focusing on Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Writing Skills. Recently, they created
“Character Comes to Life” book report projects. Each student created their main character from their book, which incorporated a
summary of the book, significant vocabulary words, and a detailed
description of their character.
Sixth Grade:
In Social Studies, the Sixth Grade is researching current
events.
They are also learning about the Zhou dynasty and the
Chinese philosopher Confucius. They are creating a time line on
Chinese timelines. In Science, they are discussing how weather
form changes, and the various types of weather. In Math, they are
learning
general
math
concepts
including
fractions,
with
algebraic functions, and the number theory. They are working on a
dream bedroom project in math, too. In ELA, the Sixth Grade is
doing the same “Character Comes to Life” book report project as the Fifth Grade. Each project gives detail descriptions of their
main character and the plot. They are also focusing on Reading
Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Writing Skills.
Seventh Grade:
In Social Studies, the Seventh Grade is analyzing life in the
English colonies. They are also creating a research report for
colonial men and women. The students are learning about how waves
transport energy in Science class.
In Math class, the Seventh
Graders are learning about the fundamentals of Algebra. They are
using Algebraic Reasoning and working with fractions as well as
decimals. In ELA class, the students continue to work on their
Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Writing skills.
The are currently working on their Trimester Two Book Report Pro-
jects. The project is based on various genres they had engaged
in this trimester.
They had to create the newest coffee for
“Dunkin Donuts” using vital details from their books. In Religion class, the Seventh Graders have been discussing the importance of the “good news” of Jesus Christ. They are working collaboratively on creating “good news” billboards which represent optimistic and hopeful views in our world.
Eighth Grade:
In Social Studies, the Eighth Graders are discussing the
Gilded Age and Progressive Movement. The students are creating a
political cartoon based on political corruption on one of the
progressive reforms.
They are learning how organisms adapt to
their environment and how some have changed over time in Science
class. In Math class, they are learning the foundations of Algebra and are studying polynomials.
In ELA class, the students
continue to work on their Reading and Writing skills. As part of
a post reading activity, they are also working on the “Newest Coffee for Dunkin Donuts” like the Seventh Grade class.
These
projects reflect all significant aspects of the novels they have
been reading for Trimester Two. In Religion class, the Eighth
Graders are learning about the challenges that the Church faced
during the Middle Ages.
