his year marks a milestone in the
Festival's history, the oldest in
the whole of the Middle East. We
will celebrating together the 30th
Anniversary from 28th Nov to 8Th Dec
2006. The Festival continues to make
forward strides year after year, rising to
greater heights. In recent years the
Festival has adopted the tradition of
honoring some of the leading countries
that have made outstanding contributions to the Seventh Art, during the
past century. Among the countries
which have been honored are France,
Italy and China. This year, our choice
has fallen on a whole continent, not just
a country… South America, as well as
other Latin America countries like Cuba
and Mexico.
The festival is under the auspices of
His Excellency Mr. Farouk Housny the
Egyptian Minister of Culture. The
President of the festival is Dr. Ezzat
Abou Ouf, and the honorary President is
the renowned actor Omar El Sherif. The
Vice President is Soheir Abdel Kader.
She is also the Director of the Cairo
International Film Festival for Children
Adding immeasurably to the prestige
of our international jury, is the presence
of jury president Luis Puenzo imminent
filmmaker of Argentina.
Other highlights of the 30th edition
include a Seminar on Film Piracy, and
continuing from last year, shedding the
spotlight on outstanding performances
of Arabs in the International Cinema as
well as the Film Market at the Cairo
Opera House
In addition to the regular sections of
the festival, this year's 30th edition will
be shedding the spot light on the latest
political events in the Middle East; as
the war in Lebanon, through the
Panorama of the Lebanese Films.
This festival has come a long way
from its beginnings in 1976 when
dreams came true on with the first
Cairo International Film Festival that
was launched by the Egyptian
Association of Film Writers and Critics
on August 16. For 29 years, the home
of the Pyramids and Nile has hosted
international superstars like Nicolas
Cage, John Malkovich, Morgan
Freeman, Bud Spencer, Gina
Lollobrigida, Ornella Mutti, Sophia
Loren, Claudia Cardinale, Victoria Abril,
Elizabeth Taylor, Shashi Kapoor, Alain
Delon, Greta Scacchi, Catherine
Deneuve, Peter O'Toole, Christopher
Lee,
Irene
Pappas,
Marcello
Mastroianni and Omar Sharif, as well
as great directors like Robert Wise, Elia
Kazan, Vanessa Redgrave, Oliver Stone,
Roland Joffe, Carlos Saura, Ismail
Merchant and Michel Angelo
Antonioni, in an annual celebration and
examination of the state of cinema in
the world today.

November 28 to December 8, 2006 and

Le Cancer, un meurtrier sans pitié

pourquoi elles perdent la
tête et se mettent à tout dévorer. En
plus, elles résistent aux traitements."
C'est en ces mots que le chercheur
Fred Saad, du Centre hospitalier universitaire de Montréal (CHUM),
décrit le mal qu'il essaie de comprendre depuis des décennies. Le
directeur de la section urologie
oncologie est spécialiste du cancer
de la prostate, un des plus cruels
lorsque la tumeur est maligne.
Au Canada, le taux de mortalité
associé à ce cancer est de 20.8 par
100.000 personnes. Au Québec, ce
taux est de 23.3. Un homme sur 27
mourra du cancer de la prostate, que
l'on dépiste chez un homme sur six.
Ce cancer est moins meurtrier que
le cancer du poumon, dont le taux
de mortalité est de 71.2 pour
100.000 personnes au Québec, ou
que le cancer du sein (31.7 chez les
femmes).
Mais le cancer de la prostate
demeure un énorme tabou chez les
hommes. Le Dr. Saad déplore que le
cancer n'est souvent diagnostiqué
qu'à un stade avancé. Des patients
de moins de 45ans en meurent
encore.
Comme pour plusieurs maladies, la
recherche porte désormais sur la
génétique pour essayer d'améliorer
les chances de survie des patients.
"Il y a cinq ans, on prédisait que la
génomique aurait un impact. C'était
du Star Trek. Là, on y est", dit-il.
Le CHUM a déjà entamé des
recherches en thérapie génique.
Lorsque les cellules résistent à la
chimiothérapie, les chercheurs veulent modifier les gènes du patient
pour le rendre compatible au traitement.
Du coup, les cancers très agressifs
pourront être ralentis.
"Le but est de transformer cette
maladie mortelle en une maladie
chronique que nous pouvons gérer."
Dr. Saad travaille aussi à deux vaccins pour prévenir le cancer de la
prostate, encore une fois une idée
jugée farfelue il y a quelques années
seulement.
La boite à outils pour traiter le cancer ne cesse de se remplir.
À ce titre, la curithérapie est devenue un traitement efficace pour le
cancer de la prostate, et même pour

uebec's Liberal Party is in the forefront of rights for the Québec's
immigrants and Cultural Communities. From the main accomplishments of the party we can mention its recognition of the skills and
expertise acquired abroad as a priority for the province with agreements
signed with various medical professional orders to improve access to
these professions for the cultural communities. 207 resident physicians
were admitted since 2003 and more than 600 from cultural communities
found work under the PRIME programme.
The Liberal Party also launched the "Semaine québécoise des rencontres
interculturelles" Agreements were signed with majour Québec cities
(Montreal, Quebec City, Laval, Sherbrooke, Rawdon) as well as 8 region
(via the CRE) to ensure that all these localities have the necessary
resources to welcome and integrate new Québecers. Foreign students can
now work off campus during their studies in addition to 2 years thereafter
to facilitate their immigration procedures after graduation. The Québec
government will also be adopting extended policies against all racism and
discrimination.

To charm audiences at Place des Arts
O
n the 23rd of November, and on the
occasion of the "week-end de la
chanson Québecor", we are at a
date in the elegant Studio-Théàtre at Place
des Arts is with the artist Serge Bédrossian
who will sing a selection of his own songs
plus a few good surprises. There will be
also a number of interpretations of Charles
Aznavour songs that he is renowned for.
The Studio-Théàtre shows have become
an annual tradition that Serge started in
2003 followed by three dates in 2004 and
another one in 2005. He is looking forward
to have a packed audience yet again this
time around.
Mr. Serge Bedrossian, was born in an
Armenian family from Kessab, in north
west Syria in a family of 7, six brothers and
a sister. He knew he loved music very early
and he bought his first guitar at the age of
ten and never left it. He wrote his first song
by age 16. At 20 he was in France studying music at the Montpellier Conservatory.
He arrived in Montreal in 1980 and studied
singing, theatre and writing at
Conservatoire Lasalle, at Université de
Montréal, Cégep de Rosemont. Then he
started his singing career at social gatherings and big anniversary events (like 350th
Anniversary of Montréal, the Fête de
Dollard, Ville St-Laurent anniversary) and
took part in a number of musical comedies
in French. He found particular success with
interpretations of Charles Aznavour songs
as Aznavour was his idol from very early
on. He also loved to sing Salvatore Adamo,
Enrico
Macias,
Elvis,
Englebert
Humperdinck and Frank Sinatra. He
appeared in Télévision Quatre-Saisons'
"Cinq minutes de gloire". Other television
appearances included télé-series and
shows on Société Radio-Canada, Canal D
and CBC. He took part in many festival
events and majour cultural extravaganzas.
He interpreted Aznavour's "Ils sont tombés"
at the 90th commemoration of the
Armenian Genocide at Oratoire St. Joseph.
Serge Bédrossian already has three
albums under his sleeve: "Bédrossian
International (12 chansons en 10 langues)",
followed by "Karoun… Karoun .. (le printemps)" and finally Serge Bédrossian Live.
His repertoire includes tens of songs that
he has written (lyrics and music). He sings
in many languages including French,
English, Armenian (including in Kessabi
dialect), Italian, Spanish, Greek and Arabic.
He has quite an impressive repertoire of
personal songs as well and has been able
to influence his own daughter Cynthia to
also take to singing.
He has his own studio where he gives
singing and interpretation lessons, also
writing songs and theatre. He has prepared
contestants at the Star Académie. He is
planning to travel to Armenia early next
year for a series of concerts. This will be a
dream come true as it will be his first visit
to the motherland.

A traveler without observation is like a bird without a
song. NEeMA is a land and soul traveler and her songs
are as much multicultural experimentations as they are
graced with pop sensibilities. Her music travels from personal folk stylings into pop, jazz and world music.

orn in Montreal of Egyptian parents NEeMA is a genuinely multicultural individual and artist. She has
lived in Egypt working with street children, in
Australia completing her university degree, in India working
with Tibetan refugees and monks,
and in the small isolated community of Wekweti in northern Canada
managing a First Nation Band.
She has also backpacked throughout many parts of the world discovering new cultures, peoples
and places. She says that traveling has been such an important
learning tool for her. "If everyone
took the time to travel in their
early adult life, particularly to a
developing country, our world
would be so much more tolerant and peaceful than it is. I
wish traveling were part of the
school curriculum" she says
with a beautiful smile and
strong conviction.
to buy her first guitar and learn to play. "I was always waiting for others to play so I could sing along. I learned the guitar so that I would be able to accompany myself and not
wait around. I learned by watching others. At first it seemed
really difficult, but within a week of practicing I could
already play my first song and that gave
me the drive to keep practicing." In
1999 NEeMA lived in Alexandria,
Egypt where she studied guitar with
Mohammed Emad El Edin and voice
with Mme Titie. She also recorded
her first demo in Egypt, and by the
time she returned to Montreal she
was seriously thinking of pursuing a
professional career as an artist.
She was then sidetracked
when she moved to the
Northwest Territories to manage
a Native community. She lived
there for almost three years fulltime. Upon leaving the north she
continued working for the Dogrib
Treaty 11 Council helping to negotiate their land claims and self government agreement. She pursued
her writing and music on the side
until mid 2005 when she decided to
jump in. "The decision to pursue our
dreams is never easy, especially
when we already have security and
recognition from society and we
stand to lose it. But life is so precious
and so short and I couldn't let it go by
without at least trying."
NEeMA's music reflects her
travels, her spiritual journey and her
desire for a more peaceful world. Her
debut album entitled Masi Cho which
means thank you in Tlicho (Aboriginal
language from the Northwest
Territories) will be in stores across
Canada on October 10th. The album
begins and ends with a prayer/song
which was inspired by the chief and
council meetings which NEeMA
attended in the north; they always
begun and ended with prayer. The
closing prayer contains excerpts of
people praying in Egypt and in the North of Canada. The
prayer's underlying message is that we are all one, no matter our race or religion. Her music is a beautiful refreshing
and uplifting combination of folk pop with world, jazz and
spoken word influences. She explores themes of hope,
fear, searching, tolerance, the mind and love. She sings in
English, French, Arabic and Tlicho, though the album is
mainly in English.
NEeMA's music has already been
featured in several compilations and
documentaries across North America.
She has also been featured in What is Indie?, a thought provoking documentary about what it means to be an independent artist. There are many talented musicians who
have collaborated on her CD, including Rick Haworth
(Lhasa, Daniel Bélanger, Michel Rivard), Karen Young,
Tagaq (Björk, Kronos Quartet), François Taillefer (Lynda
Thalie, the McDades) and François Turgeon.
NEeMA has been writing poetry since she was seven.
She has always loved to sing but it wasn't until she was in
Australia completing her university degree that she decided
