The Hanžeković Memorial is the oldest sports competition in Croatia. This beautiful sports story began in 1950 as
part of the competition between two of Zagreb's strongest athletics clubs, Dinamo and Mladost, and so from the
initial stages, the 110 m hurdles memorial race was named after the pre-war Zagreb representative and record
holder Boris Hanžeković.
The competition gained international status in 1958, which brought
some of the biggest names in world athletics to Zagreb over the next few
decades. These included Alberto Juantorena, Valeriy Brumel and
Renaldo Nehemiah to name a few. At the end of the 20th century, the
Meeting grew rapidly in significance, and today the Boris Hanžeković
Memorial is considered one of the best athletics meetings in the world.
In recent years, the meeting start list has regularly included
approximately twenty Olympic and world championship gold medalists,
and the results achieved in Zagreb appeared at the top of the world
athletics medal tables. Who could forget the numerous jumps of Blanka
Vlašić over two metres, especially the one over 208 cm, which is the
second result of all time in the high jump category? Or, who could forget
the best athlete of all time: Usain Bolt and his 9.85-second result in the
100-metres sprint? And let's not forget the 110 m hurdles memorial
race. The list of Olympic and world champions who have participated
and won in competitions at the "Hanžek" meeting is equally as long as
