By Train
Hanoi Railway Station, (120 Le Duan
Hoan Kiem District; tel. 04/3942-3697;

terminal stop on the Reunification Railroad.
Hanoi to Hue, air-conditioned soft berth to
Hue costs 460,000 VND, and it's 1,003,000
VND to Ho Chi Minh City.
By Bus
Budget traveller cafes in the Old Quarter,
mostly along Hang Bac or Hang Be streets,
offer low-luxe seat-in-coach tours.
Services and prices are similar: About
690,000 VND earns you an open-tour ticket
from Hanoi to Saigon with all stops in
between.
Local buses arrive at and depart from the
following stations: Gia Lam Station
(Nguyen Van Cu St., Long Bien District -across the Long Bien Bridge and a few
clicks to the east of town) runs minibuses
and coaches to Haiphong, Halong Bay,
Lang Son, and some destinations in the far
northwest
Ben Xe Nam Hanoi (Southern Bus
Station; 5km/3 miles south of the city) runs
regularly to all stops along the southern
coast, starting with Ninh Binh and going as
far as Ho Chi Minh City, as well as to Dien
Bien Phu and the far northwest; Ha Dong
Station is north of town and runs buses
regularly to Lao Cai (near Sapa).
Getting Around Hanoi
Hanoi is divided into districts. Most sights
and accommodations are in Hoan Kiem
District (downtown), centered around
picturesque Hoan Kiem Lake, and Ba
Dinh (west of town) or Hai Ba Trung
(south) districts.
By Taxi
Taxis can be hailed on the street, at
hotels, and at major attractions. The
meter should read between 10,000 VND
and 15,000 VND

Tip: Make sure the cabbie turns on the
meter. Be sure to get your change;
drivers often seek a surreptitious tip by

Motorbike taxis are a cheap and easy
way to get around the city, but drivers go
like madmen. Be forewarned: This is

showing the driver the written address of

ATMs in Hanoi
whizzing motorbikes isn't always very
comfortable, but it can be a nice choice
for touring the Old Quarter's narrow
streets. You can pay as little as 40,000
VND for a short ride, and 60,000 VND for
a longer haul.
By Bicycle
Rental costs for a bike are about $1 per
day from a hotel or tourist cafe. The traffic
is daunting, but the brave quickly learn
how to just stay to the right and join the
flow. Helmets are generally not
available.

What to Buy in Hanoi
Hanoi is a fine place to shop for silk,
silver, lacquer ware, embroidered goods,
and ethnic-minority crafts. Silk is good
quality and an easy buy.
Traditional Items, Antiques &

Hong Hoa, on 18 Ngo Quyen St.

paintings and decorative items.
For fine ceramics, look to Quang's

Quarter.
For decorative items and souvenirs, look
to the streets surrounding Hoan Kiem
Lake. A good place to start is Nha Tho
Street. Here you'll find silk and house
wares designers in and among quiet
cafes.
Delta Deco (12 Nha Tho St), a large
dealer of lacquer ware and fine
furnishings, is a popular choice.
Clothing, Accessories & Decor
For luxury foreign goods, and/or for a
glimpse of Vietnam's burgeoning mall
culture, check out Trang Tien Plaza. The
top floor features budget clothing, and
lower floors are all real name-brand
fashion and electronic goods, the likes of
Levi's and Sony.
Hang Dau Street, on the northeast
corner of Hoan Kiem Lake (near the
intersection Lo Su), is positively "shoe
heaven" and carries a wide selection of
men's and ladies' shoes.
Lo Su Street meets the lake, you'll find
bag sellers with loads of medium- to
good-quality reproductions of your
favourite brands, like North Face or
Adidas.

Traditional Markets
Dong Xuan Market is the city's largest
traditional market and a highlight of a visit
to the Old Quarter. A massive indoor
pavilion is surrounded by streets teeming
with sellers day and night (early morning is
best to visit). Find lots of Chinese knockoff
goods, produce, and stuff for everyday use
in homes -- but there are plenty of neat
trinket shops tucked down the narrow
lanes of this maze of commerce, and just

the experience of walking around (or
photographing the chaos) is a reason to
visit.
Cho 19-12 (the 19-12 Market) is one of
Hanoi's most interesting markets. Just
west and in the shadow of the Melia hotel,
you'll find this labyrinth of local goods,
produce, and oddities. On the south end of
the market, near the main entrance, is the
"whole roasted dog" aisle, with crispy
Fidos stacked one atop the other. In the
heart of the market are all kinds of che
(Vietnamese custard) shops and local
food stalls, as well as meat and produce
stands. You won't be able to get over all the
dogs here.

Top Attractions
The Hanoi Hilton (Hoa Lo Prison)
This isn't a hotel. This was a name given
for ironic reasons to the original Hoa Lo
Prison that housed many American
prisoners during the Vietnam War. The
list of prisoners included John McCain,
the 2008 Republican candidate for US
President, who spent a portion of his 5½
year imprisonment at this facility.
The Presidential Palace
Designed in a uniquely Italian
renaissance style, this was the former
dwelling place of the French Governor
General. The former Vietnamese leader,
Ho Chi Minh also resided here at one
time.
The Temple of Literature
Now used as a Confucian temple, the
building was originally constructed in
1070 and was formerly the site of one of
the oldest universities in Vietnam.
Historically, it is considered to be one of
the country's finest sites and tourist
attractions.
