2VORWORT
PREFACE 3
DEAR READERS,
Rhineland-Palatinate is the theatre of European history:
Monumental Roman buildings, medieval castles, historical
fortresses and high-profile state museums. The eventful
history lends beauty and charisma to Rhineland-Palatinate.
Not for nothing the state is home to no less than four UNESCO
world heritage sites: Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Roman
Monuments, Cathedral and Liebfrauenkirche in Trier, Upper
German-Raetian Limes and the Cathedral of Speyer.
Generaldirektion Kulturelles Erbe Rheinland-Pfalz manages the
state properties, among them the Roman buildings in Trier –
the centre of the ancient world in Germany – the castles along
the central Rhine and in the Palatinate region or the Prussian
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz. Outstanding exhibits are
on display in the state museums of Mainz, Koblenz and Trier.
The advancement of historical sites using modern visitor concepts and digital presentations, such as audio-visual guides, is
particularly interesting here. Many events, such as concerts,
lectures and festivals revive the properties and bring history to
life. It is important to us that during all the advancement and
restoration of buildings and monuments particular attention is
placed on barrier-free access.
I trust you will enjoy reading this brochure and warmly invite
you to discover the rich cultural heritage of RhinelandPalatinate anew!
Doris Ahnen
State Minister for Education, Science, Vocational training and
Culture of Rhineland-Palatinate

KAISERTHERMEN
ROMAN BATH CULTURE AT ITS BEST
The Kaiserthermen were designed as
one of the largest public baths of the
Roman empire. With bathing and
wandering halls, sauna and massage
rooms the thermal baths were to provide relaxation to distinguished Romans – however, they were never
completed. Declared UNESCO world
heritage site, the mighty ruins –
including an underground maze –
today invite to take a discovery tour.

IGELER COLUMN
MONUMENTAL MEMORIAL PLAQUE
It is among the best preserved death
monuments of Roman times. A wealthy

23 metre Igeler column built. Its reliefs
depict scenes of daily work and
mythological scenes, such as Ganymede’s ascension with Jupiter’s eagle
– a symbol of hope for eternal life by
the side of the Gods.

EHRENBREITSTEIN FORTRESS
ONE OF EUROPE’S LARGEST FORTRESSES
This place is unique: For 3,000 years
people had used the high rocky outcrop as refuge. From here the view
extends from the Rhine, Deutsches
Eck and Mosel, all the way to the
Neuwieder Becken. The fortress was
built by Prussians and once among
Europe’s largest fortresses: metre
thick walls, ditches, tunnels, bridges
and gates still dominate the enormous
building complex to this day. The
redevelopment for the BUGA 2011
created a unique cultural ensemble
for the UNESCO World Heritage
Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

PALATINATE – THE CASTLE REGION

PALATINATE –
THE CASTLE REGION
One romantic castle next to the other, mighty rocks,
extended forests – not for nothing is the Palatinate
Germany’s castle region. In the Middle Ages the region
was one of the most important areas of the Empire.
Today you can experience how kings, counts and
knights used to live and fought for power and wealth on
Trifels Castle, the Dahner Castles or the Hardenburg
Castle and Fortress ruins.
40 PALATINATE – THE CASTLE REGION
ALTENBAUMBURG CASTLE RUINS
FROM STRATEGIC SPOT TO QUARRY
Strategically, the situation at the
exit of the Alsenztal was extremely
favourable. However, from the time
the Raugrafen line had died out in
the 14th century, Altenbaumburg
served merely as quarry. The impressive remains of the wall still
allow to identify the castle’s former
structure. Only the Palas was rebuilt.

TRIFELS CASTLE
WHO HOLDS TRIFELS, HOLDS THE KEY TO THE EMPIRE
Between 1088 and 1330 the mighty
castle of the Salier and Staufer
dynasties was one of the centres of
political events. It was home to the
crown jewels, imperial sceptre and
orb and was also used as prison. Its
most famous prisoner: King Richard
the Lionheart.

NANSTEIN CASTLE RUINS
MIGHTY THRONE ON A SANDSTONE CLIFF
Besieged, destroyed, rebuilt, plundered, destroyed… The history of
Nanstein castle is a tale of the struggle
for power, of successes and failures,
but also of the courage to start again.
In the 12th century it developed into
one of the largest fortified structures
of the Staufer dynasty. The ‘Large
Rontunda’ was one the strongest gun
turrets of its time. The “last knight”
Franz von Sickingen, once Lord of
Nanstein, died in his castle after a
violent siege.

ARCHÄOLOGISCHES SCHAUFENSTER SPEYER
TRAVEL BACK IN TIME
Welcome: The tour through the exhibition leads past the model
of a Franconian grave mound directly into the time tunnel framed
by Roman sarcophagi and architectural elements from the
Middle Ages. At the latest in the main showroom of the
“archaeological window” you are right at the heart of history.
Here you discover finds from Roman graves and prehistoric
garbage, e.g. from settlements of the stone, bronze and iron ages.
In the “Gläsernen Werkstatt“ workshop you can watch restorers at
work. With great enthusiasm experts
outline different approaches, show
you the equipment of modern
restoration and tell you exciting stories on how the objects were found or
what they were used for.

In changing exhibitions here current
excavation results or special finds,
such as skulls found at a unique stoneaged ritual site in Herxheim near
Landau are showcased, providing
