“When you support a locallyrun community radio station,
something that is non-profit and
the people of your community
are coming together to create,
it really says a lot for your
business as to what you value.
That message is important and
meaningful to us and to those
who support small businesses.”

“People will often mention to
me that they hear DISH is an
underwriter on KZUM. I feel that
as an underwriter, I am more tied
to the community than doing
commercial radio. Not only do
you get your name out into the
community, you’re supporting the
music and the radio station.
I love KZUM.”

UNDERWRITING VS. ADVERTISING
As an alternative to advertising, underwriting is a way for your
company (or non-profit organization) to gain community-wide
recognition for your business or cause.
Full Year
$5.50
$1,560
UNDERWRITING is a support statement in the form of an
informative announcement.
ADVERTISEMENTS are promotional spots produced in
an aggressive, drawn-out, pushy manner to compare your
business with competitors.
The difference is informative vs. promotional.

WE’RE IN IT TOGETHER
WE ENCOURAGE local artists, musicians, and small businesses.
WE BUILD relationships by giving non-profit organizations
complimentary public service announcements and partnering
with corporate businesses through special event sponsorships.
WE PROMOTE our ever-growing, inclusive, cohesive, and
culturally-diverse community.
WE DO THIS not because it delivers an audience for your
business, but because such programming is central to
our mission.
Still asking yourself, "What’s the difference?"
HISTORY
KZUM was founded in 1978 by a small group of citizens
who saw the need for independent, non-commercial radio in
Lincoln. Beginning with just a handful of programmers and
a few hours of daily air time, KZUM has now grown to a 24/7
broadcast schedule—available worldwide and powered by more
than 90 volunteer programmers and three paid staff members.
KZUM SUPPORTS
... something DIFFERENT everyday,
and I just have to listen.
—Jennifer Davis-Korn, 48 Bowl
... they’re DOWN-TO-EARTH folks,
just like us.
—Mike & Lezlie, The Canine Scrub
... you get the ears and SUPPORT
of those in your own COMMUNITY.
—Kara & Kelly, The Panic
National studies have shown that listeners have a more positive
image of a company that underwrites on community radio, and
are more likely to frequent that business or organization as a
customer or supporter. Underwriting provides you a high profile
among KZUM’s loyal and ever-growing audience.
Our listeners enjoy:
× Sustainable living
× Supporting small businesses
× Dining at local eateries
× Attending live performances and other
cultural events
