MISSION STATEMENT
The San Francisco Japantown Foundation’s mission is to support cultural, community and educational activities for San Francisco Japantown. Its vision is to preserve and
honor Japantown’s history by fostering and providing funding for activities that reflect the Japanese American heritage, and to engage Japanese of all generations and
all experiences. The Foundation was formed in December 2006 through generous
endowments by Kintetsu Enterprises of America, Jack Hirose, Hats and Amey Aizawa, Union Bank, and Minami Tamaki LLP. Since 2007, the Foundation has provided
more than $635,000 in funding to the community.

about osechi ryori
One of the important goals of the Japantown Foundation is to continue to promote and preserve the traditional
and modern culture and history of Japan.
Although our Board Members are composed of individuals of different backgrounds, experiences and
professions, we unanimously agreed about the one thing we continue to treasure about our Japanese cultural and
ethnic heritage: the food we grew up with, particularly the food prepared and eaten to celebrate the new
calendar year.
This type of cuisine, commonly known as Osechi Ryori in Japanese has been passed down from generation to
generation, family to family and from region to region.
Certain dishes are carefully prepared and presented on New Year’s Day to wish for good health, happiness,
prosperity, and to safely welcome in a new year.
Here in the US and in Japan, modern families no longer have the time or knowledge to make the osechi dishes
they grew up with. Thus, in a tribute to remember our own cultural heritage and to share this special tradition
with individuals interested in Japanese culture and tradition, our yearly Osechi Ryori Event was created to allow
guests to take the time to reflect, reminisce and respect the symbolic meaning of each of the dishes offered as
well as partake in great food that cannot be found in any restaurant or local market.
This year, we are very honored to have three popular and well respected restaurants contribute to our Osechi
Ryori repertoire. Each of them will be preparing dishes that reflect a particular regional style of cooking of Japan
that will serve as an added treat to the traditional Japanese New Year dishes that will be prepared.
