Reminder for Those Getting Distributions from IRA’s
The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 extended the qualified charitable
distribution provisions for 2012 and 2013. An IRA owner can exclude from gross income
up to $100,000 of a qualified charitable distribution made for a year.
Please contact your accountant or tax preparer to discuss the full extent of this rule.
This may be the last year that this rule will be effective. It can be advantageous for both
the taxpayer and the charity.
This report acknowledges donors who contributed between January 1, 2012
and December 31, 2012. We have listed over 2,000 donors in this issue.
If we have omitted or misspelled your name, please accept our apologies.
You may call 406-723-6706 or email us at [email protected],
so we can make the necessary corrections.
M
essage from our Leaders
Dear Alumni, Supporters,
and Friends:
On behalf of the BC
family we are very proud
Greg Ritter, Tim Norbeck, Kerrie Hellyer, Don Peoples Jr.
to present the 2012 Butte
Central Catholic Schools Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors. In
the last year we have experienced several exciting achievements in the
classroom, on the playing field, in our community service endeavors,
and in our faith development programs. This report celebrates these
accomplishments and extends a special thanks to all those who helped
to make them possible.
At Central elementary, junior high, and high school our programs
are deeply rooted in the traditions of the Catholic Church. Our students
are challenged each day to develop their talents, to appreciate their gifts
of life, and to serve one another through prayer, support, and action.
The class of 2012 provided incredible evidence to the quality of our
programs. The 27 members of the class earned an amazing $683,000 in
college scholarships. This amounted to an impressive average of $25,000
per student. This achievement is a credit to our school environment,
which stresses hard work and striving to do your best.
Through this Annual Report we would like to extend our thanks
and appreciation to all those who believe in Butte Central. We are truly
blessed to have so many loyal alumni, parents, friends and supporters!
We look forward to your continued prayers and support of our
schools.
Gratefully Yours,
Don Peoples, Jr. ’82, Development Director

“Serving the Diocese of Helena and Butte’s Catholic Parishes”
A special thanks to the pastors, parish administrators, and parishioners of St. John,
St. Ann, St. Joseph, St. Patrick, Holy Spirit, and Immaculate Conception Parishes for
their tremendous support to Butte Central Catholic Schools. During the 2011-2012
school year, the parishes contributed $209,000 to Butte Central Catholic Schools.
Butte Central Catholic Schools would also like to thank Bishop George Leo Thomas
and the Diocese of Helena. Butte Central Schools have benefited greatly from the
prayers and support of the Diocese of Helena. This outstanding generosity is making
it possible for over 400 students in preschool through high school to experience the
values of Catholic education.

2011-2012 Budget Review
The continued success of Catholic education is a tribute to the resourcefulness
and dedication of administration, faculty, and students. Through careful planning
and management of resources, the Butte Central Catholic School System has been
remarkable in its efforts to provide an outstanding educational project.
In recent years, the task of generating and allocating sufficient resources has been
increasingly difficult. The generosity of families, alumni, parishes, businesses, and
benefactors has kept Catholic education alive and well in the community of Butte.
In the budgeting process, the Butte Central Catholic School System is faced with
the challenge of keeping tuition levels affordable for families and, at the same
time improving salaries for our outstanding faculty and staff. School officials have
diligently worked to increase enrollment and attract additional funding sources.
A review of the 2011-2012 budgets reveals that tuition and fees amounted to
$1,331,154 or 62.9% of total revenues. Parish subsidies covered $209,000 or 9.9%
and the Butte Central Education Foundation provided $336,000 or 15.9%. The
remaining 12% of revenues include additional fees, grants, and miscellaneous
contributions.
On the expense side, personnel costs amounted to $1,611,509 or 76.2% of the
budget. The remaining 23.8% of expenses included $207,674 for plant operations
and maintenance, $41,840 for instruction, and $132,013 for activities.
Looking to the future, the support of benefactors will be more important than ever
before. Locating new sources of revenue are essential to strengthening the financial
future of Butte’s
Catholic
Schools.

Butte Central
ducation Foundation
The Butte Central Education Foundation serves as the cornerstone of fundraising in
the Butte Central Catholic School System. Funds raised by the Foundation are used
to meet the costs of education that are not covered by tuition and parish subsidies.
During the 2011-2012 school year the Foundation provided $626,284 to Butte
Central Catholic Schools. The funds included direct support of pre-school through
high school operations and debt service for the Maroon Activities Center. A total
of $336,000 was provided to the operational budgets of Butte Central Schools for
faculty and staff salaries and benefits, student scholarships, academic programs,
activities, and facilities. An additional $160,000 was raised to meet the annual bank
payment for the Maroon Activities Center. The Foundation also provided $30,084 in
Guardian Angel Scholarships to families and $3,200 in year end faculty bonuses.
During the year, the Foundation also operated the BC Futures Script Program.
The program provides the opportunity for Central families and supporters to
earn tuition credits by purchasing script certificates to over 100 stores and service
companies. The program generated $97,000 in both direct tuition credits and fees
paid by families.
Annually, the Butte Central Education Foundation conducts a variety of fundraising
projects and events. The Annual Fund Drive plays a major role in assisting the Butte
Central Catholic School System. Along with funds raised through various other
activities, the Foundation strives to meet the financial challenges facing Butte’s
outstanding Catholic schools.

entury Club 2012
The Butte Central Century Club benefits athletics and activities at Butte Central
High School and Butte Central Junior High School. Tuition and parish subsidy
dollars are not used to support activities, so funds raised through the Century
Club are essential to the Butte Central Activities Department. Each August the
Butte Central Foundation conducts a membership drive for the Butte Central
Century Club. Individuals, families, and businesses are contacted to join at various
membership levels. Advertising opportunities in the fall and winter activities
programs are also included in the drive. In 2012, the Century Club generated
$78,562.00 for Butte Central Schools.

The Butte Central Parents Club started the annual Calcutta Dinner in the early
1980’s. For over 30 years, the Calcutta has raised an important source of funds for
Butte Central Schools.
The 2012 Calcutta was held Thursday November 29, 2012 at the Front Street Station.
An exciting new Calcutta game was successfully introduced. The event was chaired
by Butte Central boosters, Julie Holt, Kim Davidson, and Becky Peoples.
A total of 198 tickets were sold for the 2012 Calcutta and $20,383.09 was raised for
Catholic education.
A special thanks to the following parents, alumni, friends and members of the Butte
business community who purchased tickets in 2012. Congratulations to Ed & June
Lester and Karen Stimatz who split the $1,000 Calcutta grand prize.

ourtside Illuminated Sign
Advertising Program
The Maroon Activities Center offers business sponsors the exciting opportunity to
advertise during volleyball and basketball games. The courtside illuminated sign
Program provides advertisers with an excellent venue to tell their story.
During the 2011-2012 athletic year, the MAC hosted 100 regular season and 96
tournament games. Thousands of spectators were in attendance at the events and
viewed the courtside signs.
Funds raised through the sign program provide the Maroon Activities Center with
an important source of revenue. Several sign spaces are available for the 2013
season. For additional information, please contact the Butte Central Development
Office at 723-6706 or email us at [email protected]

Butte Central
emorial Endowment Program
“Building for Tomorrow”
The Memorial Endowment Program was created in 1989 to provide an opportunity
for families, classes, and individuals to establish endowed funds in support of Butte
Central Schools. The program is designed to create a perpetual source of revenue
through investment of the donors gift as well as an everlasting tribute and memorial.
To establish an endowment, donors must commit a minimum of $1,000 over a
three-year period. The interest income from these endowments will fortify school
finances by creating an annual source of revenue.
Three separate types of endowments, all with critical importance are part of the
program.
1. Memorial Endowed Scholarships – Provide tuition assistance
to Butte Central School system students and families. Selection
criteria and requirements may be established if the donor desires.
2. Memorial Endowments – Provide revenue for unrestricted use by
Butte Central Schools unless the donor wishes to restrict the funds
to a special area or branch of the system.
3. Memorial Endowed Faculty Chairs – Provide an annual source of
salary enhancement for faculty and staff.
The principle investment of these endowments has grown to over $1,000,000. All
funds are professionally managed. Plaques listing all endowments are on permanent
display in the rotunda of Butte Central High School. Each year, a listing of all
endowments is published in the Butte Central Schools Annual Report to further
honor those remembered by endowments.
Memorial Endowed Scholarships
Providing tuition assistance to students and families who are pursuing the dreams of
Catholic education.
Hounsel/Leveque Family Endowed Scholarship – Established by Jerome Leveque from the
Butte Central Class of 1961 and his wife Mary Jo Hounsell Leveque from the Butte Central
Class of 1960 in honor of the Hounsell and Leveque Families.
Class of 1968 Bishiop George Leo Thomas Endowed Scholarship – Established by the class in
honor of class member Bishop George Leo Thomas of the Diocese of Helena.
Last Man Endowment – Established by Tom and Barb McLeod of Dayton, Ohio, the Oaas
Family, and the Cullerton Family as a memorial to Tom McLeod, Sr., Bill Cullerton, and
Torger Oaas. These three members of the class of 1936 and the 1935 Maroon Football
Team vowed to be the Last Men off the practice field each day during the football season.
The endowment was established as a tribute to the Last Man Club and the legacy they
established.
Mike and Hedy O’Connell Scholarship – Established by Mike & Hedy O’Connell in conjunction
with their work with the Butte Kiwanis Club and Sunshine Camp.
William and Roseanne Moore Memorial Scholarship – Established in memory of William &
Roseanne Moore by their niece, Melody Rice.
Joan Morris Memorial Scholarship – Established in memory of Joan Morris by her husband, Dr.
John Morris and their children, Michele, Michael, Sheila, Jack and Brian.
Class of 1943 Memorial Scholarship – Established by the Class of 1943 at the conclusion of their
50th Reunion in honor of all members of the class.
John and Margaret (Sullivan) Good Memorial Scholarship – Established in memory of John
and Margaret (Sullivan) Good by their children J. Michael Good, Steve Good and Carlin

– Our Lady of Lourdes Guild
“Preparing for Tomorrow through Deferred Giving”
The St. Gabriel – Our Lady of Lourdes Guild was established to honor those
who make Catholic Education a part of their legacy through a deferred gift. The
Guild, which is named in honor of the Patrons of Boys’ Central and Girls’ Central
respectively, recognizes the commitment of benefactors who remember Butte Central
Schools with a life insurance policy, estate gift, or any other type of deferred gift.
In order to attain membership in the Guild, the Butte Central Development Office
must receive a copy of pertinent provisions of the individual’s will or trust, or a copy
of the life insurance policy which names Butte Central in his, or her, estate plans.
Upon receipt of documentation, participants are enrolled in the Guild. All members
of the St. Gabriel – Our Lady of Lourdes Guild receive an attractive plaque depicting
St. Gabriel, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Butte Central Catholic High School. A plaque
listing all Guild members is on permanent display in the Maroon Activities Center.
The names of all guild members are published each year in the Butte Central Catholic
Schools Annual Report.
By encouraging deferred giving, the Guild provides an opportunity for benefactors
to make extra-ordinary contributions to the future of Butte Central Schools.
Additional information on the program may be obtained by calling the Butte Central
Development Office at (406) 723-6706 or by writing to P. O. Box 634, Butte, MT 59703

“Helping Families Meet Tuition Costs”
The Butte Central Scrip Program provides an opportunity for Butte Central families
and supporters to earn tuition credits by purchasing Scrip Cards from a long list of
national merchants. We also have Butte merchants who provide our program with
their own gift cards. During the 2011-2012 school year, the program generated
$97,000 for Butte Central Schools in both tuition credits and fees paid by families.
Scrip gift cards are available year round at Butte Central Elementary. Each time a
family purchases gift cards they receive a tuition credit. The percentage of the cards
vary from 1%-16%. The families receive 75% of the credit and Butte Central receives
25% for operating costs. For a complete national merchant list please visit our
website at www.buttecentral.org.

“Own a Part of the Maroons”
The Butte Central Education Foundation is excited to announce a new fundraising
plan designed to generate $2 million for Butte Central Catholic Schools. The plan
features the sale of 20,000 shares of Maroon Stock at $100 per share. The stock sale is
very similar to fundraising programs conducted by the Green Bay Packers and more
recently by the Boise State Bronco Athletic Association.

regulations. Shareholders
receive a stock certificate
and become members of the Butte Central Foundation, Inc. Shareholders will be
invited to an annual shareholders meeting, which will be held each fall during the
M Club celebration. The names of all those who purchase stock will be permanently
displayed in the Cote Family Lobby and Reception Area in the Maroon Activities
Center. As with all non profit stock programs, shareholders do not receive dividends
and the stock does not appreciate.
Maroon Stock
Proceeds from the sale of Maroon Stock will be used to complete financing on the
Maroon Activities Center and to benefit teachers’ salaries and student scholarships.
When all 20,000 shares are sold, the $1.6 million mortgage on the Maroon Activities
Center will be retired, $200,000 will be set aside for an endowment fund for teachers’
salaries and $200,000 will be placed in an endowment fund for faculty salaries.
The Butte Central Foundation will immediately commence with the sale of Maroon
Stock. Alumni, parents, supporters, and M Club members are encouraged to
support this program by purchasing Maroon Stock. The M Club is an organization
consisting of all former male and female varsity letter winners.
Supporters may purchase Maroon Stock by contacting the Butte Central Foundation
at 406-723-6706. Additional information on the program can be found at www.

Foundation officials hope to have all 20,000 shares sold by the summer 2014,
which marks the 100th anniversary of Maroon Athletics. Butte Central’s very first
interscholastic team participated in the fall football season of 1914.

Specialty License Plates
are NOW Available!
Butte Central alumni, parents, students and supporters are encouraged to
purchase Butte Central Catholic Schools’ specialty license plates when registering
vehicles. The license plates are available to Butte Central supporters who are
registering passenger cars, pick-ups, vans, sport utility vehicles, motorhomes, large
trucks, buses, or trailers. These plates are uniquely designed with the traditional
interlocking BC and a cross symbolizing our school’s mission. The plates are a great
way to show your BC pride!
The cost of the plates and renewing them each year includes a $25 donation, which
will go to the Butte Central Guardian Angel Scholarship Fund. The Guardian Angel
Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance to families and students who are
attending Butte Central Catholic Schools.
For additional information on this exciting program, please contact the BC
Development Office at 723-6706 or visit your local county courthouse.
