Cities for People - Soft CitiesCycling as an integrated part of Cities for
People.
Lars Gemzøe, Gehl
Architects
Cycling is mobility – but there is much more to cycling than mobility.
Mobility involves also much more than cycling.
The presentation covers the combination of people on foot, people
pedalling and people in transit….also with cycles. The main focus is on
active mobility - mobility where you have to use your own body to do the
work.
Data about what people actually do in public spaces of the cities has
changed the understanding of what matters for urban quality in daily life.
More and more cities are recording urban activity on foot and on cycles and
not only relying on the data about car traffic for planning purposes.
The changing role of urban life and the importance of data will be
illustrated by examples from Copenhagen and Melbourne, Australia.

Cycle planning in Copenhagen – The political process
The presentation will be based on 10 years of experience in the political
processing of cycling proposals at the Copenhagen City Hall - combined
with knowledge from colleagues in other cities - mostly in Europe. The key
to success in decision-making is to cover both the technical issues of
cycling proposals - and to understand and predict the political pattern that
will adopt the cycling agenda. What are the elements that make political
value and benefits?
Niels Tørsløv,
Deputy Director,
Technical and
Environmental
Administration,
City of
Copenhagen.
The presentation will leave room for reflection and discussion.

Bicycle strategy, cycle infrastructure and Bicycle Account in Copenhagen
Copenhagen has a long tradition for cycling – and cycling is socially
accpted by the society. On this background, the first goals for Copenhagen
cycling was agreed upon in a Cycle Policy by the politicians some 12 yeas
ago. Goals at that time included a modal share of 40 % cycling in
commuting to workplaces and education situated within the municipality, a
10% increase in cycling travelling speed to make the bicycle more
competetive and that 80 % of the cyclists eventually should feel safe in
traffic.

In this workshop we will analyze different design solutions in different
cities. In line with the fact that Copenhagen cannot be copied, we will
challenge the participants to find ways of translating the designs they see in
Copenhagen to the context of the cities they are working in.

Creating safe infrastructure for cyclists - traffic safety measures -traffic
safety data collection.
Carsten Wass,
Consia Consultants
Cyclists are vulnerable. It is ten times as likely to sustain an injury per
kilometre driven for cyclists as for cars. If other risk measures are used the
result will be different, but if we want to substitute car travels with bike
trips the risk per trip should be used. If public transport is used on part of
the trip the risk will be reduced considerably. But very few are involved in
accidents compared to the total population of cyclists and therefore the
health benefit from cycling by far outweighs the negative consequences
from accidents.

In this module the participants will learn and practice accident analysis on
real cases from Copenhagen Municipality. The participants will analyze
police information about the accidents from a number of black spots, draw
collision diagrams and construct a hypothesis for the accidents, based on the
information and the analysis. The participants will also try to come up with
solutions for the accident problem at the black spot.

The film: The Human Scale
David Sim, Gehl

Consultancy on liveable and bikeable cities and political willingness. Gehl

Learning to do things differently – the journey to change.
The lecture starts with the experience of what works in Copenhagen and the
approach of integrating walking, cycling and public transportation into high
quality public space and then takes this experience to other places.
The Copenhagen experience comes from a holistic approach, recognising the
need for an enjoyable human experience. Cycling is always placed in a wider
context of living in the city. There is no way of “Copenhagenising” other
places – but elements of the Copenhagen approach can be reinterpreted to the
social, economic and environmental context of other places. A vital part of
the story is about changing mind-sets: the changing of culture starts with
people and their understanding of their environments. Examples of planning
processes, inter-disciplinary methods and citizen participation tools will be
presented, in particular Gehl Architects’ work in New York and Christchurch.

Community engagement - Experiences from transformation of arterial
shopping street with public participation.
Since 2008, the City of Copenhagen has been working with a new design of
the two main shopping streets, Noerrebrogade and Amagerbrogade. With the
projects the City of Copenhagen wants to improve streets functioning as a
commercial street, creating better conditions for pedestrians and cyclists and
public transport. To achieve this objective, it has been necessary to reduce
car traffic.
David Sim, Gehl
Architects
Klaus Grimar,
City of
Copenhagen
The politicians in Copenhagen have been very interested in the projects.
Bicycles, pedestrians and buses are given priority over car traffic. In both
districts, citizens and shop owners had strong opinions on the future design of
the streets. Copenhagen has therefore implemented long processes where
citizens' views have been clarified and incorporated into the projects.

Design of cycle facilities in intersections.
Mathias Sdun, COWI
The session aims at highlighting the possibilities and challenges with
implementing bicycle facilities i a existing infrastructure. With base in
examples from the City of Copenhagen a variety of safe bicycle solutions
will be presented. The solutions will emphasis give way intersections,
signalized intersection and bicycle facilities in one way streets.
Due the introduction presentation a variety of examples and their
consequences are presented as inspiration for the workshop part. The
examples are of more general approach and therefore suitable for use in
other city, countries and more.
Furthermore some examples of safe bicycle solutions for both “give
way” and “signalized” intersection will be presented. Beside bicycle
equipment, the design of bicycle infrastructure has a major impact on
cyclist safety. In Denmark bicycle equipment and design have to meet
stringent requirements.

Introduction to the work of the Danish Cyclists’ Federation, DCF
Pleasure, safety and mobility. For more than a century, Danish Cyclists’
Federation has been the voice of people using the bicycle in their
everyday lives. At present, we function as the interface between all
relevant players in the field of cycling.
Lotte Bech
Trine Juncher
Jørgensen, Erik
Hjulmand, DCF
The Danish Cyclists’ Federation is successfully working for better safety
and infrastructure for cyclists – both on local and national levels. This
effort is based on direct lobbying as well as consultancy, innovation, and
campaigns.
Nowadays our work is not against cars, but for the happy coexistence
between different ways of transportation – with the wish for a healthy
and sustainable development of the Danish transport sector as guideline.
Cycling should be a safe, fun, easy and obvious choice everywhere in
Denmark.

Statements
By Nicolae Duduta, EMBARQ-Washington:
What I appreciated the most about the masterclass was the opportunity to meet and work with experts in cycle
infrastructure design. We were able to address very important issues with a lot of detail – such as how to handle
conflicts involving left turning cyclists at intersections, or how negotiate conflicts between buses, cyclists, and
passengers at bus stops.
One of the key takeaways for me was that it’s more than just about creating bike lanes; the key is all the support
infrastructure that accompanies the bike lanes and makes them successful – planning, legislation, insurance,
parking policies, etc.
By Cüneyt Cetintas, Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, Turkey:
I’m working for Transportation Department of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality in Turkey. We have constructed
about 32 km of bike lane with good quality but we have few users. I have always been curious about where did
we make he mistake? Why people do not use these bike lanes efficiently? The masterclass helped me out to
understand the nature of bike world. I understood that constructing very well bike network is not enough to
attract people for biking but also it must be placed to daily life as a culture. So as Gehl architects said: “It is not
just hardware or software. Biking culture is both of them”. We have to think what is going on down the city
beside doing master plans. How does the city move? How do people live their life and what actually do they
need to have a livable city? For these statements the masterclass helped me a lot. I hope I’ll meet such nice
people and have a chance to work with them again.

ANNEX 6
By Cigdem Cörek, EMBARQ-Turkey:
As we mentioned in Copenhagen, we are working on a 'safe cycling design manual' for Istanbul. We are
conducting semi-structured in-depth face to face interviews with central and local government representatives.
We have also prepared a survey sheet by getting opinions from some non governmental organizations and
academicians from transportation departments of universities. We are planning to apply them to bicyle users in
İstanbul and learn their needs, thougts and expectations.
I can say that the masterclass help to form not only the survey sheet but also the framework of the whole
process.
By Ben Welle, EMBARQ Senior Associate:
EMBARQ is preparing a guide for cities where it works on safer design through traffic calming, pedestrian space
and providing better bicycle infrastructure. The Masterclass occurred during the development of this guide and
helped inform how to provide guidance to cities on the design principles, benefits and application of bicycle
facilities from the Copenhagen experience. This included key elements on increasing safety at intersections,
proper segregation of bicycle traffic from motor vehicles and concerns over bi-directional bicycle lanes. The
guide as a result has improved and will help cities in countries where EMBARQ works to consider safety more in
their design of bicycle lanes. In addition, the masterclass was helpful to EMBARQ in how it considers bicycle
infrastructure in the construction of bus corridors in Mexico and Brazil, as well as a follow up work to a previous
EMBARQ report and project to improve bicycling facilities within Brazil’s favela communities.
Suggestions
By Marta Obelheiro, EMBARQ-Brazil:
Suggestions:
1. The program did not include the topic of integrating cycling + public transport (in more details). For
us at EMBARQ it was not necessary because we already know about the importance of integration,
but for other audiences of the masterclass it may be useful/interesting to include this topic.
2. We missed some time during the week to have the opportunity to know the city and visit touristic
sites.
3. It would be great to have more time to take pictures during the site visits, because we could abserve
many infrastructure solutions (not only for bicycles) and didn’t have time to document it.
4. At the discussion of case studies, a wrap up with the recommended solution was always needed
but not always happened. It would be good to receive more feed back and ideas from experts.
5. I would like to receive more info from Anne on the black spots work (how they are identified, what
counter measures are adapted, impact evaluation etc.)
By Brenda Medeiros, EMBARQ-Brazil:
Suggestions:
1. Explore the connection to public transport
2. Allow more time for people taking pictures during the bike tours. Some solutios are very interesting,
but we didn’t have time to document it.
3. Give more feed back on case studies. We want to hear more of your opinion. You are the experts!
Most of the time we only showed our cases and discussed possibilities. But it was hard to wrap up
with a solution.
General comments
-
The duration of the course was: Great! With less time it would be impossible to cover so many topics
and to have the great discussions we had.
-
Some case studies could have been better prepared or oriented.
It would be good to have a break in the middle of the week. 7 days is a bit tiring. Maybe one afternoon.
Some sections could be more explorated, more focus on how to do and not only presenting what was
done.
-
7 days were too long. If you complete the agenda in 5 days, it will be great.
I think we should watch the film-human scale in Gehl Architects own place. And again David Sim should
make his presentation in Gehl. Wednesday was complicated. Friday’s Bicycle Account presentation was
inadequate. He only showed what they did before. It was not “education”. Saturday was disappointment
for me. We did nothing but we spent all the time. I think the Saturday presentations will complete on
Friday.
-
Everything was on time. This was really important to have clear times.
It will be great if we had some cases about methodology. And urban planning aspects seems to be
missing.
Especially design was too long.
Some sessions were great about learning.

ANNEX 6
-
I think my participation generally was rate 1: Very good, but last day it was rate 3: Okay
-
Timing was great.
Great facilities.
The course logistics and information was very very good.
The whole experience was excellent but I will appreciate time for knowing the city.
-
Thank you Lotte and Andrés for everything.
Although to my half English it was really useful for me.
-
There should be a lesson/training about how to ride a bike (rules etc.) in the beginning. On site activities
are very useful but a group of 10 or less would be better. You cannot hear what the trainer tells in a
crowd of 20 people. And you cannot ride easily. You always wait for the rest at the lights. I think it would
be better to divide the group.
-
Actually more time should be allowed for workshops. Because workshops were really interesting.
Cycling in the city was awesome (fantastic) but it was a little bit exhausting
-
Overall, I can not descripe the importance of actually witnessing the integration of bicycles in urban
transport. Moreover, I would like to thank each and every person for sharing their time and experiences
with us.
Last but not least Lotte’s professional approach to our group needs congratulations. She dealt with
every problem of us without hesitation. Thanks a lot! I have a single recommendation for you: The
program was extremely busy. Maybe it is a good idea to start a little bit late and/or finish a little bit early.
Especially if there would be some people with health conditions.

Discussion should have been more interactive.
I think they should sent us the training material before the education.
The sessions are too long to keep concentrated.
The quality of the learning: Good intro.
It would be good to have more time for questions in the end.
It was very informative but there was too much info about too many topics.
It was a very illuminating presentation for me. It will be very beneficial for me when I go back to my
country and explain cycling as a “mode of transport” to my colleagues, superiors and people.

It should have been included more about challenges and how does the City overcome of the
challenges.
The training material should be sent before.
1,5 hour is not suitable for human capacity of listening.
It will be great if he could complete the presentation.
Very interesting + insight
It is very important for us to understand the political process, and not only technical issues.
My business is to create opportunities and infrastructure for people. So political sessions are not my
concern but my manager’s!
The political process for integrating cycling in urban transport in Copenhagen seems different from a
potential process which could take place in Turkey. On the other hand, it is a valuable experience to
learn and benefit from.
Discussion part was more engaging.

Too many stops. Before the tour we should have been better to have a small presentation, routes,
landmarks, infrastructure etc.
The duration of the tour was OK. But I could not hear all the conversation. I think that was a problem.
After all the presentations it is really good to be in the City biking. Make me understand better.
I only wish I could bike better.
The comments from Niels were really valuable, but sometimes it was hard to hear him, the group was
too big.
It was good to be on the streets and see how the infrastructure is used by people.
Sometimes difficult to listen to him due to the number of people.
I’ve have never ride a bike for so long in a city. It is wonderful.
It might be better to divide group into 10’s. It might be easier to travel and listen to the trainer.
It was an invaluable experience to actually see and learn from a world class integration of cycling in
urban transport.
Too many people – hard to catch up

- More interactivity.
- It was perfect to learn about the different bike infrastructure and the idea.
- It is quite long, that all sessions take about 1,5 hours. (not only this).
- Very interesting + applicable presentation
- It was a good opportunity to learn from Copenhagen’s experience in bicycle transport with a historical
-
perspective.
Would like to use the bicycle Account.

Not our scale.
We just got tired. It will be great if we could sit.
It would be good to have materials with the data and projects explained during the visit.
It is good to know, but there is a lot different aspects on national legislation.
Speed ticketing prevention was irrelevant, every country has same technique. Police work about school
children was interesting; I hope we would spend much time on it.
There have to be some seats to sit.
A good opportunity to hear the experiences and work of traffic enforcement personnel in Copenhagen.

It was not a session of discussion or observation. It was not prepared.
4 hours cycling! You should create another program.
The duration of the activity was OK, but I would like to have stoped in some places for taking specific
photos like bus stops and intersections.
It was a fun ride first of all. Moreever, witnessing the well-designed network of bicycle transport was an
invaluable experience. The works like a bridge for only cyclists and pedestrians for enabling a free flow
of traffic were beneficed for us.

It would be valuable to have the input of other experts (not only Carsten) since we already work with
him.
We have worked with Carsten along the last 3 years. I really like his job. But it could be helpful to have
the opinion of another safety expert, maybe Mathias Sdun.

- I think that I would learn about bicycle Account methodology or something like that.
- I would be good to receive the English version of the questionnaire used in the Account
- He could have explained more on the process of developing the Account survey.

- The main points were repeat many time
-
Activities and exercises used for the involvement of the participants
- Room for question half way through the session
- Room for question when the participants had questions to ask
Participants' involvement in discussions and workshops
- Clarifying questions
Main impression of the participants' academic achievement
- Motivation for cycling – it’s convenient, fast and easy
- The importance of data
- Similarities between pedestrians and cyclists
- It’s a matter of what you do (Political and planning decisions), not the physical structure)
- Difference between hardware and software – both are important
- Example from New York: To see whether a change of the street design is working, paint it and try it out
before changing it for good (Testing and tryouts)
- Knowledge of the historical development – Copenhagen has not always been a cycling city as it is today

Sunday 4 May
Session: Cycle Planning in Copenhagen – Political process
Trainer: Niels Tørsløv, City of Copenhagen
Main impression of the professional presentation
-
-
First time the professional is giving a presentation about this topic.
Addressing the difference between mainstream cycling cities and other cities. But also addresses the
similarities.
Emphasizing the importance of the political process in promoting cycling
Outlining the political structure inside Copenhagen Municipality
How planners apply or propose for cycling schemes
Copenhagen created the cycling packages. Therefore every year in the budget that will be a cycling
package.
Mentioning different projects in Copenhagen and how they are funded,
Highlighting the health, safety and mobility benefits in Cycling but also the political benefits by doing.
Klaus Bondam is described as being very brave politicians. He actually took chances by promoting
cycling and thinks about being re-elected.
Copenhagen need to be innovative and are doing a lot to keep being the front runner in cycling
The police is a serious actor in the decision making. The municipality needs to agree with the police
before making decisions on street level. They are not governances by politicians but instead the police
department.
The elected politicians are changed but the civil servants are staying.
It is important to admit and understand the failures
The dynamics of the political process – first time presentation
Asking explicitly for feedback from the audience – made the presentation unstructured
Very Copenhagen focused
Activities and exercises used for the involvement of the participants
- The possibility of asking questions
Participants’ involvement in discussions and workshops
- Niels ask the class to ask questions
- Discussion about the citizens in copenhagen and how they sees cycling
- It is highlighted that removing parking lots are one huge political problem. Even people who normally
cycles and have car will be rather affected about this.
- Niels highlights for the participants the importance in doing test projects in Copenhagen, but also the
importance in choosing the right test projects to avoid bad media.
- One women asked about what was the main challenges for the politicians, because she couldn’t relate
this to politicians in her country.
- In general the particapants were very involved and asked a lot and good questions about cycling in
copenhagen and about the political power.
-
Asking clarifying questions
o About what the main challenges are
o About interest conflicts between different actors and the impacts they have
o About how to start building a comprehensive cycle network
o About issues of safety
Main impression of the participants’ academic achievement
- Information about the cycling embassy of Denmark - Website (Knowledge base) and a reward (for
promoters of cycling
- Two problems to solve: The technical part and the political part
- An idea of how the political system is working in Copenhagen – used as an example
- It’s about making proposals that are likely to be adopted by the politicians
- Awareness of what the wise Administration is able to
- Planners can help the politicians – “we” can help politicians framing their politics
- The importance of delivery and monitoring the output
- The dynamics of policy making – The press, the citizens and the elected politicians
General issue: Problem of translating the case of Copenhagen with a high biking share to cities with low biking
share
Take aways for London project:
- Understand the dynamics of policy making
- To formulate a clear vision and make a concrete and realistic strategy for implementation
2
2
ANNEX 7
-
The administrators under the mayors are also fighting eachother to show they are able to get visions
out in the real world and get them implemented.
To choose rhe most important value adding selection of projects
The administration (Civil servants/Planners) can become too clever – leaving no room for politicians.
A reason for why is cycling so strong in holland and denmark is because we don’t have a car industry in
denmark. Because we don’t have a industry trying to push cars.

Monday 5 May
Session: Bicycle Strategy, cycle infrastructure and Bicycle Account in Copenhagen
Trainer: Niels Jensen, City of Copenhagen
Main impression of the professional presentation
Bicycles infrastructure:
- Some small misunderstandings during the presentation due to differences in numbers
- Otherwise good presentation with clear points
Bicycle account:
- Bicycle accounts have been done since 1996
- A little pressured on time on this part of the presentation, but again Niels made the points
clear.
Activities and exercises used for the involvement of the participants
- Possible for participants to ask questions during the presentation
Participants' involvement in discussions and workshops
- Many questions about different percentages and modal shares
- Critical mass
- The standard of the cycle tracks
- Questions on Frederiksberg
- Should you put the infrastructure next to the main roads or through the side streets?
Main impression of the participants' academic achievement
- An idea of the bicycle history in Copenhagen
- Introduction to the initiatives the City of Copenhagen have done to promote cycling.
- Fx. Green routes, green waves, separated cycle tracks, handling intersections
- Political support on cycling
- The idea of the critical mass
- The importance of cycle planning
- Introduction to the bicycle account
Main take aways for our London project
- Copenhagen cycle tracks: standard 2.5 m., Plus-net with 3.0 (sometimes 2.7) m.
- Difference between cycle lane (painting, no separation) and cycle tracks (separated)
- Concentration of accidents in intersections, intersection guidelines
- Critical mass – if you have a few cyclist then cardrivers won’t look out for cyclists.
Therefore the more cyclist an increase of safety.
- Debate on green cycle routes or not? Cycling on major roads make you feel integrate
with the city rhytms, but the green routes can be good for relaxing.
- Governmental support for super cycle highways
- It is good to have a cycle plan eventhough you don’t have the money. Because if you
get the money then you don’t have to start from scratch but you will have an actual
plan for cycling.

- Higher risk for accidents on cycle than cars pr. Km.
- Accidents happen for very people but health benefits are going to many more.
- Various crash types in a quantitative list
- Number of accidents between bicycle and different transport modes. Cars are by far the most common
transport mode in accidents with bicycles.
- Black numbers (Non-registered). Through UN-report it was shown that there were more injuries between
bicycles than between bicycles and cars. This is shown if non-registered injuries are taken into account.
- Very loose and relaxed presentation with openness about contribution from the participants.
- General initiatives in infrastructure that can promote cycling such as the importance of removing detours
create a coherent network etc.
- Invest were the biggest potentials even though it is most expensive. But it is here you get the best benefits

presentation.
- Questions were asked through the presentation
- Participants contributed with knowledge about the different topics
- Asking questions about what they should to in their countries when they don’t have the cycle network, trying
to relate to their own problems.
The participants seemed to be very interested in this class and how they could use this for themselves in their
countries.
- The participants used their knowledge to create a discussion on different initiatives highlighted by Carsten.
There was a really good discussion about bi-directional paths. Knowledge were shared and the advantages
and disadvantages was highlighted.
- Many questions were about how they could do it. Very practical relevant.

- Good visualization of different accidents (quite clarifying were the drawings on blackboard)
- Explanation of different type of accidents/ truck driving as an aspect of cyclists’ safety.
- Small technical problems
- Quite important was the distinction between accident and injury factors.
- Euler diagrams were rather interesting showing how factors and cause connect and overlap
each other.
- An illustrative example was made showing what the workshop assignment will be.
Activities and exercises used for the involvement of the participants
- Questions are very welcome, it shouldn’t be one way communication
-Workshop assignment: Drawing the accidents – Understanding patterns

-
Population numbers in Copenhagen (in order to relate them to accident numbers)
Why has the number decreased so drastically for car accidents?
Questions about legislation on cyclists and pedestrians on bus stops and the right
away
Discussion on what municipalities can do to improve safety for vulnerable road users
Question about the actual necessity of signs in intersection where the priority is
unclear and there are conflicts (e.g. cyclists vs pedestrians at bus stops)
There was a discussion of what is a black spot (there needs to be analysis and
identification of the patterns in order to define and afterwards come up with
suggestions). The term can have different content.
Main impression of the participants' academic achievement
- To learn about traffic safety in Copenhagen
- Focus on the vulnerable road users
- Be aware of a high number of accidents in intersection
- Different initiatives that can increase road safety for cyclists
- Right turning trucks  create better visibility through mirrors, glass and the position of the
driver. Also creating campaigns for safer streets.
- Aware on accident factors; driver related 91,2%.
- Speed is one of the highest accident factors
- What can the municipality do to improve safety  1. campaigns, 2. best practise and
international knowhow, 3. improve coordination with police, schools, public transport etc., 4.
Ensure safe traffic
- How do the City of Copenhagen 1. identify, 2. analize and 3. improve “black spots”
- A lof of potential in collaborating with the police on accident reports
- There is a high need of information and data to help identify and define black spots.
The participants were interested and motivated on working with the assignment.

ANNEX 7
Wednesday 7 May
Site-visit: Meeting in the City Hall
Host: Morten Kabell, Mayor of Technique and Environment
Main impression of the professional presentation
Professional presentation by the mayor but also honest and reflected replies to the questions from the
audiance
Activities and exercises used for the involvement of the participants
After a short presentation by the former technical and environmental mayor Klaus Bondam about the
institutional structure of Copenhagen Morten Kabell introduced his political party and the city of Copenhagen.
After that there was room for questions from the audience.
Participants' involvement in discussions and workshops
Questions about
The institutional structure of Copenhagen
How to balance the transport modes
How you can push cycling forward politically.
How to deal with “pro-car” politicians
The relationship municipalities and national government
How to work with the press
What the new things for cycling in Copenhagen is
- Continuation of the recent development. Width cycle tracks rather than building new ones
What the vision of the mayor is
- Give up the 50% target for 2015, however, get towards the goal for 2018
- Building of light rail, expansion of the metro system
Monitoring
Main impression of the participants' academic achievement
Importance of transbalancing the modes
Importance of reclaiming space to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport
Main arguments to use to convince politicians:
- Efficient
- Cheaper
- Green
It’s about give people an alternative. Many car-drivers are not evil, they just don’t have an alternative.
Municipalities must take the lead. Hence need to push the government
It’s about providing knowledge to the press
Monitoring is essential to promote improvements projects

ANNEX 7
Friday 9 May
Session: Bicycle Account. Detailed presentation of method, indicators and questionnaire
Trainer: Ulrik Djupdræt, City of Copenhagen
Main impression of the professional presentation
- Ulrik is using bicycle account in Copenhagen to show the advantages and disadvantages about doing a
bicycle account.
- It is easy to hear he knows a lot about it and that he have been quite involved in the cycling account in
Copenhagen Municipality, but he seems a bit nervous.
- Ulrik took the time to answer the questions from the practitioners. If needed he even went in depth with some
of the more technical stuff to answer the questions.
- The presentation went a bit unstructured because of the questions from certain practitioners and the led the
discussion to something related to the slides.
- Copenhagen bicycle account 2006 was handed out to the practitioners and Ulrik went through it together with
them. Analyzing the different parts in it.
- The presentation went into a discussion between the different practitioners. Maybe Ulrik should have stopped
them. But again they also had time to reflect and have a really good discussion.
Activities and exercises used for the involvement of the participants
- The practitionmers was divded into groups and made a dummy account and then present this dummy
account.
- 2 groups: 1 turkey, 2 Brazilian, American and mexican.
- Questions time is also scheduled.
Participants' involvement in discussions and workshops
- Practitioner asked good questions about the mode share of Copenhagen and the greater Copenhagen.
- It seemed like some of the practitioners were a bit tired.
- Ulrik was also questioned about the methods by the practitioners.
- The practitioners who were awake wasn’t afraid of asking questions to Ulrik.
- One practitioner were very interested in knowing something about how the data was gathered and questioned
some of this. It became very technical.
- There was a really good discussion between the practitioners about a uncertainty in the bicycle account. The
practitioners said that after this week they need to allign their numbers. So they started to reflect how they
could use this.
- Discussion about promoting cycling without improving infrastructure because this will create accidents.
- Discussions about their different cases from their cities.
Main impression of the participants' academic achievement
The turkey group tried to relate to a real case they are going to do. So they reflected on what the could do with
this new knowledge. The second group just in general discussed what could be interesting for them in their
country.
Turkey: First get and understanding of best practices around the world. Then secondly get a knowledge about
the situation in their country, demographics etc. Conduct surveys so they can compare data.
Brazilian: 3 parts: First understand what people thinks. Second part with numbers of modal share, kilometres,
cost etc. Third show people what we are doing, what are the goals, how will we achieve these.

Friday 10 May
Session: Introduction to the work of the Danish Cyclists’ Federation – Building a cycling
culture in the cities where EMBARQ is working
Trainer: Trine Juncher Jørgensen, Danish Cyclists’ Federation
Main impression of the professional presentation
- a good and clear presentation of the role and influence of the Danish Cyclist Federation
- Presentation of the varoius projects the Danish Cylist Federation are involved in.
-The next presentation from the two members of the Cyclist federation was a bit more confusing and maybe not
very usefull as the presentaion had a very narrow focus on two rather small projects in Copenhagen which was
explained in a lot of details.
Activities and exercises used for the involvement of the participants
- The participants were involve in the presentation and had two point out barriers in their home country.
- There were also a round of presentations and the participants asked a lot of questions along the way.
Participants' involvement in discussions and workshops
- Many of the participants seemed tired after many intensive days of learning, however, there were still quite
a lot of questions.
Main impression of the participants' academic achievement
-
Highlighted the importance of having a national cyclist federation that promote and preserve the conditions
for the cyclists.
The Cycling Federation has a very good partnership with the planners from the City of Copenhagen and
are always asked for advice when they are planning or inplemting infrastructual changes.
