It’s Time for…
ICE at Santa Monica
While anytime is a great time to visit Downtown Santa
Monica and Third Street Promenade, there’s that special
holiday spirit in the air from December through mid-January
— the time for winter break, end of semester, Christmas, Santa
Claus, Chanukkah, the New Year and, finally, Valentine’s Day!
It’s a whirlwind season!
Since Southern California is known for its sunny days and
Mediterranean climate, there’s no sub-zero holiday shopping
here (thank goodness!), but there’s that subtle change of
season to know it’s holiday time.
The décor changes too … the shopping bags abound …
and, it’s time for hot chocolate! Another sign? ICE at Santa
Monica! Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the outdoor skating
rink is open daily through January 16. For just

And if you don’t know how to skate, not
a problem! Learn to skate at Saturday
sessions from 9 – 10 AM. Four lessons
with an experienced instructor are

Are you having a Kodak moment? Circa 1957? When you step into
the new Lomography store on Santa Monica Blvd. just off Third Street
Promenade, you may think you’ve time traveled to the days of the Brownie
Camera and Hasselblad 500 C.
You’re in a place that at first strikes you as a retro, vintage camera store,
but that’s just at first glance. Second glance and a bit of chat with the highly
knowledgeable Lomographers lead you to understand you’ve stumbled into
the coolest reimagining of analog cameras — that means they use film — at
reasonable price points ranging from $35 to $400.
Lomography Gallery Store Santa Monica is the perfect place to flirt with
the analog world; it’s the one-stop-shop for cameras, film, accessories and
film developing — your analog needs are covered!

Segal’s Rhino Custom Knives are sold at the store.
As well, he will custom craft knives to meet your culinary
needs and to perfectly fit your hand. Segal has a varied

Hennessey + Ingalls
Sustained by Trends,
Traditions and Loyalty
Hennessey + Ingalls
BY DOUGLAS GLENN CLARK
Mark Hennessey believes his ascension in the world of
trendy visual arts books was preordained. A family rite and
saga that he hopes will continue when it comes time for
him to retire from the helm of Hennessey + Ingalls Art &
Architecture Bookstore.
“I grew up in this business. It was preordained that I’d
still be involved. It’s been a great business for me. I wouldn’t
have done it any differently. I’m really pleased by the way
things have turned out,” he says.
The venerable book shop is now located at 214 Wilshire
Boulevard, having grown in and out of four locations since
its 1963 founding by Hennessey’s father, Reginald, now
deceased, and his partner, David Ingalls, who retired about
20 years ago.
The Hennessey-Ingalls partnership flourished for
decades, included a publishing imprint and became what is
thought to be the largest retail enterprise of its kind in the
country. Now stores in Santa Monica and Hollywood have a
combined floor space of 10,600 square feet and about 85,000
titles. Hennessey + Ingalls also boasts a thriving online presence designed by
Hennessey’s son, Brett, who has also managed the Hollywood location since
its 2008 opening. Son-in-law Carlos Chavez also contributes to the family
business.
“We have unusual depth and breadth for a store dealing with the visual
arts. I’ve never seen a store like ours — not even when traveling in Europe.”
Enter the contemporary space and, to the right, you’ll be greeted by
a colorful selection of magazines. Move deeper into the store cum library
environment, and you’ll notice that the right side is devoted to art-related
tomes, covering photography, drawing, painting, fashion and even candle
making, among other topics. The left is dominated by architecture and
related subjects, such as interior design, landscaping and garden design.
Interspersed are tables with remainders marked down 20 to 80 percent.
12
Visitors immersed in the gorgeous publications may not
realize that the store has 18-foot ceilings and a drop-down
lighting grid that illuminates the industrial look Hennessey
chose when relocating the shop from its previous location
on Third Street Promenade. Toward the back of the store,
shoppers will find rare and out-of-print books mingling with
foreign titles — the cornerstones of the original shop.
Hennessey attributes the longevity of the familyowned and managed business to its devoted fans, including
celebrities, such as actor Brad Pitt and Michael Jackson.
“Michael Jackson was a huge customer. He once spent
$120,000 on books to set up a library for underprivileged
kids.”
Hennessey + Ingalls displays a colorful assortment of
postcards, local guidebooks and maps, and a large array of
memorable holiday gifts is a big incentive for customers to
visit the shop. This season Hennessey expects new picture
books on California-style bungalows in Venice and Santa
Monica to be popular.
Hennessey, 60, counts his blessings but takes nothing for granted in a
world of e-readers.
“We will continue to survive. But I take everything personally. I’m very
proud of the fact that my father and Mr. Ingalls left me a business that for
years just grew and grew. Now that I have family members working here, when
I retire I want to leave a business for them that is thriving.”

cOMMUNITY PROFILE
Angelic Holiday Gifts
at Historia Antiques
BY DOUGLAS GLENN CLARK
Every holiday season, art objects that express the heart’s
devotion lift the spirits of James Caswell. So much so that
the founder of James Caswell-Historia Antiques at 1322
Second Street is often reluctant to part ways with his glorious
inventory.
“I love to share all this with people,” says Caswell. “We
don’t bring anything in the store we’re not passionate about.
You hope the people who buy them will love and cherish them
too.”
Angel wings crafted by South American silversmiths are a
popular gift and reflect the shop’s focus: intertwining everyday
life with religious and cultural beliefs. But the gallery is rich
with other examples of authentic Spanish Colonial art and
Mexican devotional folk art, Caswell’s specialty.
Although the holidays fit well with the Historia collection,
the pursuit of excellent art objects is an endless journey.
Adventure, competition and revelation have been constant
companions for Caswell and his spouse, Patricia Carolina. The
family enterprise also includes their 16-year-old son Jamie
Cruz and daughter Angela, who lives in Denver.
“Historia means history and it means anecdote. Our work
is not just looking at objects on a coffee table, it’s about story
and the levels of meaning associated with the art we find,”
says Caswell.
Retablos, for example, are paintings of spiritual figures
that may have been displayed in common households in the
19th or 20th centuries. The art was interactive, not merely
decorative. Family members would touch and speak to the
objects that are now antique collectables.
An ex-voto is an illustration that portrays the fulfillment of
a prayer. Caswell uses the example of a child chasing a ball into
14
traffic. A parent sees the danger and asks for God’s help. If the
child remains unharmed, the positive outcome is re-created in
an ex-voto that includes an inscription. “The ex-votos are like a
comic book — a picture with dialogue bubble.”
Antiquarians are occasionally criticized for taking art
objects out of their original cultural context to make a sale.
Caswell sees more paradox in art collection than plundering.
Years ago while traveling on a provincial road in Mexico,
Caswell spotted a retablos in the hands of a boy. Unfortunately,
the lad was using the sacred art as a shovel. The 19th century
painting that had been created by a famous artist was mostly
destroyed.
“What we do is more than a business. Our work is a
historical, sociological and archeological process. I have to be
able to spot what is authentic and what is a heavily restored
piece. A lot of forensics and, sometimes, heartbreak are
involved.”
Caswell has faith that he will continue to find beautiful
artifacts, and that art lovers will find Historia. “People discover
us when they want to or need to,” says Caswell. “That’s our
hope.”

SANTA MONICA CONSERVANCY
A regular at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market, Chef
Ray Garcia of FIG Restaurant is committed to sustainable
culinary practices and was recognized last year for such with
the Rising Star Sustainability Chef Award by StarChefs.com.
“Ray is a passionate, highly skilled chef who also feels
a responsibility to the environment … and (he) employs
many different ways to further the cause of sustainability
and pass this message on to his diners,” explained the
editors of StarChefs.com.
Chef Garcia’s commitment to sustainable food extends beyond his kitchen
at FIG. Garcia is committed to the national Let’s Move campaign. First Lady
Michelle Obama created Let’s Move as a way to address childhood obesity. One
part of Let’s Move is the Chefs Move to Schools program, pairing chefs with
schools in their communities to educate kids about food and nutrition.
The East L.A. native has focused his efforts at Olympic High School in
Santa Monica with the idea of exposing students there to new foods and flavors
they might not enjoy on a regular basis. “Many foods today are processed so
we forget to appreciate the flavor and ingredients in their simplest form,”
said Garcia. “I hope to help them understand that healthy, flavorful food is
accessible at home and school.”
An active member of the Santa Monica community, FIG is located at
the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows. FIG is open daily and there’s
complimentary valet parking for diners, including bicyclists. Chef Ray’s favorite
dishes and menu items also are available through FIG Catering. Think FIG
Catering for your special events and parties, whether it’s a large gala event,
a wedding or an intimate catered dinner party at home.

Borrow a Bag, Share a Bag
Earlier this year, Santa Monica banned the use of
single-use carryout bags. But the city has made
it easier to comply with this new standard by
creating the Share a Bag program.
With Share a Bag, you can pick up a reusable
bag if you need one, or drop one off at one of 17
locations throughout Santa Monica.
So, bring your reusable bag when you visit
Downtown Santa Monica and Third Street
Promenade, or pick up a bag at a convenient bag
exchange spot! Bag exchange locations are …
