Jim’s Message
The 2010-11 school year is now in the books, and in true
Indian Hills fashion we closed the year in a resounding way. We
logged our fourth consecutive year of record-breaking enrollments.
Indian Hills now graduates more nursing students, more advanced
manufacturing students and more students in the transportation
cluster than any other community college in Iowa. In addition we
were recognized nationally by the Aspen Foundation as being in
the top 10% of the some 1200 community colleges nationally in
student success; and as of this publication date we continue to vie
for the top prize of $1 million if named the top college later this

year.
Enrollment growth came at an opportune time as state funding was again slashed
to community colleges. This is the sixth time in the last ten years that state funding to
Indian Hills has dropped. I believe this makes the accomplishments of your college and
its associated staff even more remarkable. Unfortunately, this makes us more dependent
than ever on student tuition at a time when students themselves probably have the least
ability to pay.
We have several projects going simultaneously that will keep your college vibrant and
at the forefront of being a valuable resource for our region and the state of Iowa. We will
celebrate the opening of a new Job Corps Center on our North Campus. They expect to
enroll their first students in October of 2011. This new educational and training center for
young people age 16-24 will provide opportunities for about 450 economically deprived
young people annually in the areas of healthcare, information technology, advanced
manufacturing and heavy equipment operator. This Job Corps Center will be a new
national model and will be a fixture on a new 80-acre “Workforce Campus” that itself will
be a one-of-kind facility in the nation. The new Indian Hills Workforce Campus will house
not only a Job Corp Training Center, but will house assistive services from Iowa Workforce
Development, WIA/Promise Jobs, Vocational Rehabilitation Services, an Accelerated
College Career Academy operated by Ottumwa High School and our own Community
Education Center. We are also completing a Rural Emergency Training Center on site
to assist local emergency personnel with training. In the near future, we hope to add a
Business Incubator that will be aligned with our Small Business Development Center and
Rural Entrepreneurship and Leadership Institute (RELI). All of this will be conjoined with
an expanded technical and transportation training center.
On our main campus in Ottumwa, we are currently remodeling science labs to
accommodate expanded enrollments in those associated programs; and we will complete
the construction of a new soccer field for a budding soccer program that was begun 3
years ago.
Indian Hills closed out the year by winning its 5th team national championship (3 in
basketball, 2 in golf), as our golf team won the Division I National Tournament in Odessa,
Texas. As you know we all have a lot to be proud of at Indian Hills, and perhaps more
importantly we continue to set a standard of excellence in academics and service to our
area.
I hope you continue to stay in touch with us as we move forward. We love hearing
from you.

Bianca’s Message
As I look back on my time as a student at Indian Hills, I
have many fond memories – proving that even I can pass Biology
with the help of Heidi Peterson, listening to Rhonda Eakins bring
Early American Literature to life, and playing my first volleyball
match in the Tom Arnold Net Center. I know many of you had
similar experiences as well at Indian Hills, and we would like to
help you reconnect with the instructors and classmates that left
impressions on you personally and professionally. Luckily, I have
Bianca Myers
the opportunity to reconnect on a daily basis with many of the
educators that impacted my life and my career, and I would like
to help you do the same.
It is my goal as an alumni coordinator to assist you in reconnecting with
classmates and instructors. I encourage you to attend alumni events in your home
area (Burlington and Des Moines), return for homecoming events in Ottumwa and
Centerville, participate in the alumni volleyball or softball games, attend the 50th
anniversary baseball reunion, assist us in expanding alumni events to other areas of
the state with large numbers of Indian Hills Alumni, or update your information for
the online alumni directory. We would be happy to assist you in contacting former
classmates and instructors. We have an increasing number of current and retired
instructors and staff members join us at our alumni and friends receptions, and they
would love to see you there!
I encourage all of you to look back over your time at Indian Hills, think of the
many fun memories you made here, and reconnect with the college, an instructor, or a
classmate. We look forward to helping you reconnect, and I would love to hear your
stories about the time you spent at Indian Hills, Centerville Community College, Iowa
Tech, or Ottumwa Heights.

instructors, or to update your alumni information, please contact Bianca Myers at

Indian Hills Named One of the
Nation’s Top Community Colleges
Indian Hills made the first cut. Now, college officials are busy trying to make
sure they remain eligible for a share of $1 million in prize money when the next
round of cuts is made in a competition to identify the top community colleges in
the nation.
In April, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program ranked Indian Hills
as one of the nation’s 120 best community colleges, challenging IHCC to compete
for prize funds by insisting on high standards for learning, college completion
without delay, and serving as a training ground for jobs that pay competitive wages.
The list of 120 community colleges will be winnowed to ten finalists in
September. The colleges have been charged with documenting how they are
performing based on how much their students learn, how many students complete
their programs on time, and how well students do in the job market after graduating.
Former Michigan governor John Engler, speaking for the jury that will select
the winners and finalists, emphasized the tremendous importance of community
colleges in preparing the high-tech workforce American companies need.
The Aspen Institute will conduct site visits to each of the ten finalists in the
fall. And, based on the evidence, the Prize Jury will select a grand prize winner and
two or three runners-up, to be announced in December.

Did you know that you can donate property to the Indian Hills
Foundation and possibly receive a deduction on your income
taxes? The Jackson family did!
In 2004, Roger and Mary Jackson of Derby, Iowa, purchased
a house in Ottumwa for their twin sons to live in while they were
attending Indian Hills Community College. The two boys, Brian
and Kevin, completed the robotics program at Indian Hills in
2006 and found jobs in their fields moving on to other cities.
Roger and Mary maintained the house in Ottumwa until 2010,
then decided to donate it to the Indian Hills Foundation. Their
generous charitable donation was tax deductible under Section
170 of the IRS tax code.
For more information about this type of donation, please
contact Rhonda Conrad, Executive Director of the Indian Hills
Foundation, at (641) 683-5115.

New Flight Simulator Arrives at IHCC
Students in Indian Hills’ aviation programs are now able to take advantage of the latest technology available in flight simulation.
Earlier this year, the college purchased a Redbird FMX flight simulator that IHCC Aviation Pilot Training and Aviation Maintenance
Technology students have been using as part of their curriculum.
Indian Hills is the first school in Iowa to utilize this modern technology to enhance its aviation programs.
According to Jane Berg, Program Director of IHCC Aviation Programs, “The Redbird utilizes the most recent updates in software and
video graphics to provide a realistic training environment for general aviation. It’s the first of its kind to deliver a credible flight training
environment to aviation students while still being affordable for flight schools.”
The Redbird includes an electric motion platform, fully-enclosed cockpit and wrap-around exterior visuals to provide lifelike training
for students at approximately one-half the cost of renting an airplane for the same instruction.
With the new simulator, Indian Hills students are now able to “fly” every day that classes are in session, even when the weather
conditions won’t allow them to go up in a plane.
The simulator has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, allowing the students to log the flight time towards their
certificates and ratings.
The Aviation Maintenance Technology program is using the simulator to allow students to gain hands-on experience involving engine
systems, aircraft instruments and communication and navigation. And the Redbird will also be beneficial for the college’s new Avionics
program.
In addition, Indian Hills plans to offer the services of the Redbird to industry partners and the general public outside the regular
college training schedule, enabling them to take advantage of the flight simulator, too.
Morrissey Celebrates 50 Years in Education
Throughout his career in education, Bob Morrissey has left his mark
on more than one institution and has assisted more students than one may
wish to count. After serving students for 50 years, Bob will retire from
Indian Hills (again) in December. Bob will forever be remembered as the
“godfather of the Indian Hills Foundation” and will also hold a special
place in the hearts of students and staff members who have been lucky
enough to know him.
Bob’s storied educational career began as a junior high language
Bob Morrissey
arts teacher in 1962. From 1962-1973 he served as a counselor, teacher
and coach at Anthon-Oto, Ida Grove, Eddyville, and Vinton community
schools. Bob joined the Indian Hills staff in 1973, serving as a Senior Planner for the Area
XV Agency on Aging until 1975.
In 1975, Bob assumed leadership of the Indian Hills Foundation. The first scholarships
were awarded in FY ’76, and the Foundation’s assets grew from $5,000 to $2.7 million between
1975 and 1998. In addition to his work in the Foundation, he served as the Development
Officer for the College, working to secure private, state and federal grants for Indian Hills.
In 1998 Bob retired from Indian Hills to become Vice President for Development at
Divine Word College (DWC) in Epworth, Iowa. While at DWC he initiated their first Annual
Report, established a naming opportunities program, and directed the endowment of several
scholarships.
Senior Lunch and Learn Classes
The Indian Hills Rural Health Education Partnership is offering a series of Senior Lunch
and Learn Classes. The classes are held at noon in the Indian Hills Dining Hall. Each class
is $6 and consists of a buffet lunch and a guest speaker. Upcoming events are:

Bob returned to Indian Hills in 2005 as Assistant to the President for Governmental
Affairs and Community Relations. During his 32.5 years at Indian Hills he was instrumental
in securing government assistance in the construction of seven new college facilities, including
the Bennett Student Services Center, the Advanced Technology Center, Trustee Hall, the Child
Development Center, Rosenman Video Conference Training Center, Rural Health Education
Center, and the soon-to-be-completed Rural Emergency Training Services Center (located on
the North Campus). He also participated in the team effort to bring a Job Corps Center to
Ottumwa – and is excited about the new opportunities this will bring to our region.
Bob noted that he is proud of the students that have been assisted through the Foundation,
as well as grants that have assisted students to become successful in their studies. His fondest
memories are of the people with whom he has worked and the students he has met over the
years.
He and his wife Maggie have been married 44 years. They have two daughters, Robin
and Molly (both IHCC graduates), and eight grandchildren. Bob and Maggie serve on the
Ottumwa Symphony Board, as well as numerous other area organizations. Bob was an Indian
Hills Outstanding Service recipient in 1980 – he has held steadfast to this role and will be
missed, but his mark on our college, our staff, and the students we serve will last forever.
Indian Hills Memory Paths
You can leave your mark on the Indian Hills campus that you attended! With the
purchase of a memory path paver, you or your loved one’s legacy will remain forever
on the Indian Hills campus of your choice.
The Indian Hills Memory Paths began in April of 2008 and the five installations
have placed a total of 150 pavers – 125 on the Ottumwa Campus and 25 on the Centerville Campus. The Ottumwa Memory Path is located around the pond behind the
Hellyer Student Life Center, and the Centerville Memory Path is located between the
Administration Building and the Barn.
For more information on the purchase of a paver, please contact Bianca Myers at
(641) 683-5302 or email [email protected]. The Memory Path brochure
is also located on the Indian Hills website at www.indianhills.edu/memorypaths.
