A Message from the President…
“Continue to Turn Up the Heat for 2013”
It is truly amazing how quickly a year flies by. It
almost seems like yesterday that I was drafting my first
message as your President. I’d like to thank the board
and committee members who worked hard this past
year to find new ways for CFE members to connect.
We turned up the heat to remind members that CFE
membership is so much more than dues and six
dinner meetings. It’s making connections to build your
profitability in business. It’s tapping your network when you are seeking
new employment or a board opportunity. It’s making new friends with
whom to share your successes and your problems. It’s being there for
one another when we lose one of our own in an untimely fashion. As
members, you turned up the heat and the combined effort made 2012 a
terrific year for CFE.
I’d also like to offer a very special thank you to Chris Glatz and Kathy
Tinker. With their help and behind the scenes support we were able to
have over 20 networking events or workshops along with the newsletters
and website improvements in 2012! We could not have accomplished so
much without their help.
As we begin 2013, I know that we will continue to build on this success.
As members we will have numerous opportunities to network and
enhance our skills. The month of January alone has provided us with
numerous opportunities to get together. We had the annual meeting and
the pre-meeting session with Matt Anderson, The Referral Authority,
speaking about building a successful system for referrals on January 10.
On January 18, CFE members attended the Annual Capital Markets
Outlook luncheon. And we will have our first “Beyond Finance” event
sponsored by Grant Thornton at the Field Museum with Maria Pinto on
January 30. The next morning you will have another opportunity to join

Thank you for letting me share a memorable year as your President. I know that I am leaving you in
good hands and that the new executive team and board with the support of Chris Glatz and Kathy Tinker
will continue to turn up the heat.
They know that 1° more is all it takes to move from good to great. They are committed to building

New Member Nomination Form Improved-Nominate a Candidate Today
The Nomination and Prequalification Form has been modified to
make it easier to fill in candidate information on the form. You can
view and download the form on the Membership page in both
Word format (so you can fill it in online) and a PDF format.
Please consider sponsoring an executive-level colleague in a
finance-related position for CFE membership. The Membership
Committee strives to make the nomination process as easy as
possible and is confident the modified form will help. New
members are an important part of any organization's lifeblood,
and we welcome qualified candidates to contribute to CFE's
vibrancy.
Visit the CFE website to see the membership guidelines and
access the Prequalification-Nomination Form. If you have any
questions on the process, please feel free to the CFE

Introducing “Make a New Connection”
Start the New Year with an opportunity to meet new members, CFE is implementing a program that will supplement
each new member’s orientation process at CFE by introducing them to an established member of CFE. The CFE
“Make a New Connection” Program will broaden the number of relationships for each Member within the
organization, and provide a higher level of comfort and familiarity with CFE. It will also serve as an additional vehicle to
engage established members in the organization. As an established member, if you are asked to be a "new
connection" for a new member, we hope you will be able to do so.
CFE Partners with Ladder Up for 2013 Tax Season
The Philanthropy Committee is excited to announce the first opportunity in 2013 to assist others. Through the
Ladder Up organization (www.goladderup.org) a group of CFE members will provide free tax assistance.
Ladder Up is a Chicago-based non-profit organization committed to providing hardworking families and
individuals with the financial resources they need to move up the economic ladder. Founded in Chicago in 1994,
Ladder Up leverages donations of time, space and service, including the talents of 1,400 volunteers, to deliver
financial relief to thousands of clients across the metropolitan area each year. Since its founding and has served
165,000 clients and generated $335 million in economic benefits.
No tax experience is required, all members are encouraged to join Ladder Up’s mission to maximize the
returns of those in need. A CFE tax preparation event is being planned for a Saturday morning in February from
approximately 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you have not previously indicated you’re interested, please contact Judy
Andringa as soon as possible to get details.
The Philanthropy Committee has also been busy looking at additional worthy partners and hopes to announce
additional events with the Girl Scouts and Junior Achievement soon. We are grateful to Judy Andringa, Janna
Sampson, Dorothy Bossung and Cathy Jaros, the CFE members who are sponsoring these potential
partnerships. We also continue to be connected to Chicago Women’s Initiative, primarily through Debbi
Gillespie, and anticipate opportunities with them as well.
Our successful September 2012 clothing drive benefitting The Cara Program will also be repeated later in 2013.

CFE Members Hone Their Networking and Referral Skills
Thank you to the Networking Committee for inviting Matt Anderson, President, The Referral Authority, to present a
workshop just prior to the Annual Networking Dinner on January 10. Matt presented tips and tactics to a full house of
members and guests on how to build your referral network. In addition, the Networking Committee coordinated the Dinner
Meeting that included table networking with thought-provoking questions at each table to help facilitate the discussion.

During her current term as President of the American Bar Association, Laurel Bellows is focused on achieving gender
equity. ATHENA International recently honored Laurel with the prestigious 2012 ATHENA Leadership Award presented to
exemplary leaders for achieving the highest level of professional excellence and actively assisting and inspiring women to
realize their full personal and professional potential.
Additionally, Laurel continues her fight against human trafficking/modern day slavery in the United States. The ABA has
launched a national awareness campaign against human trafficking to assure Americans understand the prevalence of
human trafficking in our own country and to educate us on how to identify victims of this horror. Corporations can help. If
you are interested in assisting, please email Laurel at [email protected]. Laurel also formed the ABA’s
Cybersecurity Task Force. Directing the activities of the Task Force, Laurel assists the ABA in analyzing cybersecurity
policies in an effort to help both private and public sectors address national security issues caused by cyber threats and
attacks.
Julie Goonewardene is pleased to announce she has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Personalized
Medicine Coalition (www.personalizedmedicinecoalition.org). High on the list of breakthroughs expected to transform
medicine is personalized medicine – the use of new methods of molecular analysis to better manage a patient’s disease
or predisposition to disease. Personalized medicine is likely to change the way drugs are developed and medicine is
prescribed. Yet the regulatory and financial systems that will support personalized medicine are not yet in place. The
mission of the PMC is to build the foundation that underpins the advancement of personalized medicine as a viable
solution to the challenges of efficacy, safety and cost. The Personalized Medicine Coalition (PMC) was launched in 2004
to educate the public and policymakers, and to promote new ways of thinking about health care. Today, PMC represents
a broad spectrum of more than 200 academic, industry, patient, provider and payer communities, as it seeks to advance
the understanding and adoption of personalized medicine concepts and products for the benefit of patients.
Sara Sirotzky, Managing Director with Marsh, celebrated her 65th birthday and 42nd year with the firm by writing a
beautiful book Red Rose and Blue Butterfly. The book is about friendship and dreams and is sold with great success
through Amazon.com and BN.com. This book is the perfect gift for any occasion and is perfect for the upcoming
Valentine's day holiday. For a complimentary copy, please write to [email protected]. On December 11, Sara
was interviewed by a free lance reporter from a major magazine regarding the book and the process behind the book
including writer's secrets. Sara hopes for the interview to be published soon.
Michelle Moreno shares that Dresner Partners has been engaged on both the buyside and sellside in the Contact Center,
Financial Services, Healthcare, and Industrials industries. Any interest or ideas for prospective buyers or sellers would be
welcome. Additionally, other activities include valuation work related to mergers and acquisitions, gifting and tax
exposures, as well as equity and debt capital raises are underway. On the HR front, we are looking to hire investment
bankers at all levels. Feel free to reach out to Michelle at 312-780-7207.
