North Carolina Department of Transportation
Secretary Tony Tata presented Gov. Pat McCrory’s 25 Year
Vision for North Carolina Transportation on October 20
during a luncheon held at De’ Borah’s Restaurant. The
packed room listened as Sec. Tata outlined some of the
3,100 transportation projects planned for 2015. He stated
that NC is the 4th fastest growing state in the nation; with
nearly 80,000 miles of roadway, making it the 2nd largest in
nation. With that growth is the need for transportation
improvements, this also includes railroad and the ports/ferry
systems. With one third of all traffic in NC being freight,
transportation is one of the main drivers in our economy.
This plan is a way to make sure those modes reach every
part of the state.
Mr. Tata was only able to briefly highlight some of
the local projects, but he did mention the Rooms To Go
entry road would be complete by December. There is an I-95
study underway to help identify the options and the priorities
of areas along the corridor. He also mentioned there is work
planned for Chicken Farm Rd, as well as, the Hwy. 401 widening study should be complete in 2016; at which time projects will be prioritized. Campbell will get an underground
passage to convey people from one side of Hwy 421 to the
other safely without impeding traffic.
Johnson’s Transmission & Auto Service will be giving away
this car! They are looking for nominees for the Wheels to
Prosper Give Away. If you know someone in need of a car,
nominate them to win. Entries are due by Dec. 12, 2014.
Call (910) 892-0961 with questions or for more information.

the great art shows, recitals, dramas,
musicals and sporting events.
Mr. Tata stated that the NCDOT draft Transportation
Plan for 2015 should be available in December 2014, with
approximately 350 projects on schedule. Several copies of
the NCDOT handout, “Gov. McCrory’s 25 Year Vision for
North Carolina Mapping our Future”, is available in the
Chamber office.
Harnett County Schools
Reassignment Resolution
The Dunn Chamber’s Board of Directors opposed the
map being considered by the Harnett County Board of
Education for the middle school reassignment plan.
The Chamber Board’s position was distributed via
email to our membership. Letters were distributed to members
of the school board and Meredith Bradham, Vice President of
Education and Tammy Williams, Executive Vice President,
attended the public hearing held on October 23 to express the
Chamber’s concerns.
The Chamber Education Committee will continue to
monitor, and be on top of, this issue as it effects our town, our
businesses and our residents.
The Dunn Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Committee
hosted a Candidates Forum for the North Carolina House,
North Carolina Senate and the United Sates House races on
Tuesday, October 7 at the Dunn City Hall at 7:00 p.m. The
event was moderated by Russell Galvan, VP Governmental
Affairs.
Pictured above in no certain order: Representative David
Lewis and Susan Byerly, for the NC House race; and
Senator Ronald Rabin and Joe Langley, for the NC Senate
race.; and Clay Aiken and Congresswoman Renee Ellmers,
for the US House race.
United Way of Harnett County was chartered in 1987 and continues to provide a full blanket coverage of Human and
Emergency Services. For the past 27 years, United Way of Harnett County has eased the suffering of those in need throughout
the community and have helped to prepare young people for their future. They have provided funding for such organizations as
the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, S.A.F.E. (Domestic Violence Shelter), Hospice (Transitions LifeCare), Community
Action, Harnett Literacy, Inc., Beacon Rescue Mission, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and more.
United Way of Harnett County is currently involved in their most critical campaign ever since their beginning. It is called
“Save the Homeless”. According to homeless and mental illness experts, there are almost 1,000 homeless human beings in
Harnett County. According to the Student Advisor for the Harnett County School System, there are approximately 138 homeless
children in Harnett county schools today. Of that total number of homeless individuals, 40% suffer from major mental illness,
25% are children, and 25% are war veterans.
United Way of Harnett County is the only organization that is addressing this issue at the crisis level. They are working with Beacon
Rescue Mission to add another 20 beds to their facility in Dunn before the harsh winter sets in. Executive Director David Hodges has met
with Senator Ron Rabin and county officials to make them aware of this crisis.
United Way established the first emergency call center in 2009 so that anyone
who has any kind of need at all can simply pick up their phone and dial 211! The call center is
manned 24/7 with highly trained personnel who have access to a database that consists of most
every human and emergency service that is currently available in the county. This call center is
also for the use of the Harnett County Emergency Services Department whenever any type of
major crisis should occur such as tornados, hurricanes, floods, or other epidemics.
Please help your neighbors in need by donating and investing in the United Way of
Harnett County today. You can send your tax deductible contributions to United Way of Harnett
County, at PO Box 1322, Dunn, NC 28335.
Orthopaedic Solutions and Sports Medicine Center (OSSM) offers general orthopaedics,
sports medicine, fracture care, joint injections, joint replacements, carpal tunnel, arthroscopic surgery and
non-surgical treatments for Arthritis. Owned and operated by Dr. Jay R. Parikh, a Diplomat of the American
Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well
as Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Parikh is experienced and well trained in the field. He is
a highly qualified orthopaedist with extensive training in the diagnosis, non-surgical and surgical treatment of
the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. With his
professional training and bedside manner, patients know they are in capable hands.
Dr. Parikh is assisted by Tracy Christensen, PA-C and Jennifer Burn, PA-C. Tracy
received his Physician’s Assistant Degree at the University of Utah and has been with the
practice since 2003. Jennifer received her Physician Assistant Degree from Methodist College of
North Carolina and has been with the practice since 2008. Both of the PA’s friendly, caring
dispositions and excellent team of staff makes their patients feel at ease and comfortable.
Providing excellent health care, they all play a vital role in the welfare of the patients at OSSM.
They strive to reach patient satisfaction and to return them to their regular daily activities. One of
their greatest joys at OSSM, is when a patient walks out of the office with a smile on their face
saying, “they got rid of my aches and pain today.”
Orthopaedic Solutions and Sports Medicine Center has served the Dunn area for 15
years. They are located at 721 Tilghman Drive, Suite 100. Their office hours are Monday
through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m. For more information, or to make an appointment, visit

Celebration of Industry Dinner
The City of Dunn and the Chamber of Commerce co-hosted
a Celebration of Industry Dinner on Tuesday, October 21 at the Brass
Lantern Steak House. The evening was a way for local business
leaders to meet and socialize, while offering the opportunity to honor
their service to the local economy and the “entrepreneur spirit”. Those
invited were Dunn’s manufacturing and distribution businesses along
with larger employers.
The evening was kicked off with a welcome by Mayor Oscar
Harris, followed by an invocation by Dr. Len Keever, of Frist Baptist
Church. North Carolina Outstanding Miss Peyton Brown performed
the National Anthem. Guests were then recognized by Chamber
President Brad Heath. The message of the evening was one of thanks
and appreciation for choosing Dunn as their respective places of
business, and for the jobs and products created at each business.
After dinner, Dr. Jerry Wallace, Campbell University,
introduced featured speaker Dr. Michael Walden, a Williams Neal
